Can an almost full slave disk cause freezes?

Hi, my rock solid Giga has started to freeze intermittently.
I have run Disk Utility, Mac Janitor, Machelp, reset the PRAM and CMU.
I have 120gig HD that only has 15% left on it, it does not contain the OS.
The processors (Powerlogix Dual 1.2's) are getting a little hot to the touch.
Can the slave disk be overworking the processors because it is nearly full?
I have over 50% left on the disk that contains the OS.
What can be making the processors get hot and causing the freezes?
I have pulled out a Radeon 9800 Mac Pro and put back the old rage 128 pro and so far it hasnt frozen, the reason I pulled the 9800 was because it was the last item fitted... but it has been fine for months until now....
What can be causing this?

Hi-
Don't worry about the motherboard- that's an all or
nothing issue.
phew.. thank funk for that.
So, you're down to 2 things, I'd say- RAM or OS.
RAM has been disturbed in the last few weeks, as has been fitted to other machines, but appears to work.
Download and run Memtest to test your RAM-
http://www.memtestosx.org/
I havent done this, I re-swapped two other 512 sticks instead, (only got one gig in the Mac at the moment)
I think we talked about an Archive and Install, or
reinstall before, didn't we? If not, let's think
about doing such.
We did indeed discuss this, and time sems to be playing Agent Provocatuer, I need to sort this quickly I know... but this freezing issue has presented itself.
Except for the RAM, you've pretty
well eliminated the hardware. That leaves you with
the OS. It's a fact, that ocasionally, the OS needs
to be reinstalled. The BEST is a zero the hard drive,
and new install ( biggest pain in the * as well).
Irony...
BUT, at a minimum, after the results of the RAM test,
I would consider an Archive and Install to be a good
move towards a stable system.
I will research how to achieve this.

link is dead.
I noticed that you are running 10.4.9 (?). Did you
check on the CPU Director for your Powerlogix
processor? It needs updated, or your processor won't
work as before.
This looks like a clue... you have a sharp eye japamac... I have just checked and indeed I have 10.4.10

This link is also dead.
By the way, did you verify your processor fans were
working prior to removing it? Also, did you use CPU
Director to check the temperature? Note that the
"redline starts at about 90℃. Or, did CPUD need
updating?
Can you help me with part please? fans were working, what is CPU director?
I have searched for it and cannot find it, what does it do?
I think this is going to be a nightmare..........
(Trivia) In a 28-30 ℃ room, my PLogix CPU (single)
doesn't exceed 48 ℃ (though I do have other fan mods,
I don't ever recall it running over
58℃).

  • Upgrading From Final Cut Pro 5 to 6 - can you use full install disk?

    Hi,
I have one MacBook Pro running Final Cut 6 (with Final Cut Studio 2), and another one running Final Cut Pro 5 (with Final Cut Studio). We're looking to upgrade the second one to Final Cut Studio 2.
Does anyone know if the upgrade can be done with the disks from the full install box of Studio 2, using the product key from an upgrade? We happen to be in the middle of East Africa at the moment, so shipping is an issue...
    Thanks

You CAN install Final Cut Studio with only the upgrade disk set BUT you will need the product key for BOTH the Final Cut Studio 2 AND the previous version.
After you insert the Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade installation disk you will first be asked to input the product key for the upgrade version and then after you will be requested for the product key of the previous version.
After this, the installation process does NOT require any disks from the previous version of Final Cut Studio.

    Hi Fabio,
To configure and run ICM you need to first set up required ICM configurations. This will require-
Creation and Modelling of Business Obejct Hierarchy, Commission and Bonus Rules, Payment Rules etc.
Next step would be to set up required Master Data - BP, Standard Contract, Commission Contract
For Interface with SD, you can look to call ICM Commission Case RFC by configuring Output Type Event

  • I have a Mac Air. It said my start up disk was almost full and to delete files. I did but am not sure of what all I should delete. Then the color wheel wouldn't stop spinning so I just closed it. Now it won't open up at all. What can I do?

I deleted files from my MacBook Air after it said my start up disk was almost full. It did several xs, then the color wheel wouldn't stop spinning, so I closed it. Then after a sufficient amount of time, I tried to start it up again, only now the Apple start up wheel just spins non stop and nothing else happens. How or what can I do to get my MacBook Air to work again, without having to take it in? Thanks so much!

Always want to keep the boot drive with more free space than may seem necessary for performance and to function at its best, 30-40% free or even 50% is not excessive.
Ideal is to separate your system from your data.
You should always have bootable backup / clone of your system
Don't use a green drive for system or data though.
When you are done cloning system and/or data, remove the old original and keep as backup.
Then move the system drive to #1 - no matter what you want to reset the default boot volume to where the system is.

By staying with 10.5.8 you are not going to receive security updates, might want to consider 10.6.8.

  • Startup Disk Almost Full, what can i do??

When I'm adding things to my iTunes, or even just start up my laptop, i keep getting a message that says my startup disk is almost full and i need to delete stuff off of it. Where is the startup disk that i can look at a list of files so i can delete them or is there something else i can do like buy an external hard drive? Or do i just need to update my macbook software?

It's almost certainly your stuff (music, video, etc) that's filling up the disk.
On a laptop, your startup disk is typically the only disk.
It's also the disk where your home directory and desktop are located.
Start by looking at your home directory, desktop, downloads and such; select the detailed view in Finder, and look for big files, or stuff you don't need any more.
    Empty your trash, too.
Get yourself an external disk, connect it, and relocate some of your stuff there.
If you can delete enough stuff to load this, have a look at the [GrandPerspective|http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net> tool.
This forum is the Mac OS X Server forum, and you're almost certainly not running the Server version of the software here. Here are the client forums for the recent client versions: [Tiger client 10.4|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=177],
[Leopard client 10.5|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=235], and [Snow Leopard client 10.6|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=263]. The Mac OS X client software is far more commonly used on a Mac laptop than is the Server software.

  • How can I find where this came from? - start up disk almost full

Hi, my mac began saying this to me today "Start up disk almost full"
So I began deleting files. I deleted a lot via DiskWave.
But now Diskwave says I have enough space but my mac sure doesn't.
What do I do? What's all that 'other' stuff and where can I find it?
    Thanks in advance!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • "startup disk almost full" message - NOT TRUE!  I have about 900 GB of free space.  What can I do about this?

I have been getting repeated messages "startup disk almost full".  I am on a very new iMac running Lion with the most up to date OS.  This is a 1 TB iMac.  When I first got the message, I cleaned almost everything but the applications off the disk.  I now have more than 900 GB of space but again I am getting the message.  I found someone reporting the same problem and he said Apple Care reported a but in the mail system.  He found a Fix but it is not working for me.  (He clicked the option key and opened finder, then went to Library/mail/mailbox/recovered messages and deleted the recovered messages.  But I do not have any folder called "recovered messages" so can't pursue that fix.  Any ideas?

I'm don't know about the new systems, but I remember that I set the % full to warn me. Your % might be set to 20% or something rather than 10% which is a preferable safety margin for many uses. I solved this start up disk problem by installing a 2 Tb internal drive and keeping my data files on external, raided, drives. A real show-stopper is when your 45 Tb external drive warns you that you're too close to OUT for comfort. And, Yes, I do keep it trash free.

  • So i only have 8gb and 500gb sata disk its almost full...Is there a way i can get more space on my computer without buying another bigger computer? If so how?

  • The Startup Disk is almost full, I can't update.

    I'm a high-school student, I got my MACBOOK pro 15-inch about a year and a half ago.
I've loved it ever since lately, I can't update things. So I keep crashing and the reason I can't update things is because my 'start up disk is full'.
I've done searches on this discussion board but it seems when I type in start up disk it shows it like it's a DISK.
I'm really confused here, and no I'm not MACchallenged, I'm just Leopard OSX challenged I guess.
I really don't like the update.
I wish I never got Leopard, the photobooth ***** now.
It's slow and it pauses. But maybe this is because my 'startupdisk' is almost full. And I need to free memory.
    But what is that anyways?
    HELP!

You need at least 15% free space on your hard drive. So, the solution is to remove files. Get an external hard drive and begin.

  • Received message that my start up disk is almost full. Where is this located and how do I know what I can delete?

Received a message that my start up disk is almost full. Where do I locate my start up disk / files and how do I know what i can delete from this folder to make more space?

Start up disk is the main, and only, internal disk of your computer.
I hope you know what you saved on it, so you also know what can be removed

  • HT3680 My 3 year old iMac is freezing and I get a message "startup disk almost full for running applications. delete files..." Where do I find the startup disk and what should I delete?

My 3 year old Mac is having trouble and freezes up from time to time lately. I get a message saying "startup disk almost full, delete files ..." something about having enough room for applications to function.  I know my startup disk is the Macintosh HD, but what kind of files do I need to delete and how much space do I need to free up?  In my "about this mac" area, it says I have 4.89gb free out of 319.21  So I am confused why I need to do this.

You're less than 2% free and should always have at least 15% (my SWAG). Best is to get an ext FWHD and move stuff from the startup disk to it and delete it from that. Best things to move are movies, music, and photos, using the apps that manage those things.

  • Start up disk almost full - what can I delete?

I keep getting this error msg - startup disk is almost full delete files and I am sure there are useless files on here somewhere...
I have no idea what to delete - where to look for those useless files - help... anyone?   Thanks mucho!

In addition to the XLab's advice (which is always very good advice) what I would recommend doing is moving your media (music, photographs and music) onto an external HD. Media tends to take the most space and offloading them from the internal HD is easy and a wise thing to to. Here some Apple Article about how to do so, I think you will agree it's a pretty easy solution.
