Can an iTunes library be copied and used on two computers?

Earlier this month I tried to get an answer to a problem I was having with using iTunes on two different computers. Stubaan, pqh and GregoryBurbidge tried to assist me (thanks, guys) but I did a poor job explaining my issue. I'll try again...
Several years ago, after running short of space on the internal hard drive of my 2003 iMac G4, I purchased a 250 GB iomega ext hard drive and moved the iTunes library to it. No problems, the songs played just fine.
I recently upgraded my old iMac with a 2.8 GHz Intel core 2 Duo. I added a 1TB external drive via Firewire to the new machine. I gave my old G4 and 250 GB to my daughter, but before I did that, I "clicked and dragged" the iTunes library from my old 250 GB hard drive to the new 1TB drive, hoping that all the songs we had on the original iMac/external drive could be used on the new machine/external drive. It appears that the library was copied over successfully, but iTunes in my new iMac can't locate songs when I try to play them (the dreaded ! sign). I've gone into the preferences and tried to choose the iTunes library folder on the new hard drive as the location, but "no go."
Is it even allowable to copy over the iTunes library and be able to play all the songs on both the "old" computer and the "new" one.

Chris, Roaming and Mike:
Thanks for your responses. To answer Chris' question, when I originally moved what I thought was the library from my old iMac G4 to to my first external hard drive, I did it using Preferences -- Advanced--Change Music Folder Location option. I renamed the Music Folder "iTunes Location" and "consolidated the library" onto my old external hard drive. That worked fine. It was that "Music Folder" (what I thought was the "library") that I copied over (clicked and dragged) from the old external hard drive to the new external hard drive. The problem arose when I disconnected the old external hard drive and tried to play songs on my new iMac. The songs came up as not being found.
Is it an "authorization" issue, or something else. Thanks again for your help.

  • Can one iTunes library be kept in sync between two computers?

    Hi,
Just got a new Powerbook to supplement my iMac G5. I'd like to maintain one iTunes library on both. Is this possible? I understand I can copy my current library from the iMac to the Powerbook. But is it possible to then keep them in sync? That is, if I buy a few songs from the ITMS while traveling with the Powerbook, is there an easy way to sync with the iMac when I get home such that both libraries have the same songs, playlists, etc? I'm guessing one approach would be to copy the entire library over, but I'm hoping there's a way to just copy the updates/additions. Any advice?
    Thanks!

I have a similar problem.  I recieved an IPAD for my birthday, and my daughter updated my itunes library so i can use it with the ipad...and somehow all my songs (unpurchased from itunes, and downloaded  from a large collection of CDs) ...and play lists were deleted.   I still have them on my old ipod, and wonder how to get them back onto my computer so I can redistribute some of them to the ipad.  I must be getting too old for this tech stuff, it gets less user friendly every year.

  • I used to able to access and listen to my itunes library from my ipad using the remote app but this no longer works.  I am connected but sound thru ipad.  Is this because of they want us to use itunes match

I used to able to access and listen to my itunes library on my ipad  using the remote app but this no longer works.  I am connected but sound thru ipad- just controls my library on iMac.  Is this because of they want us to use itunes match

That has nothing to do with iTunes match. The Remote app on iPad can control the computer's iTunes but not play content from iTunes on your iPad.
To play for example iTunes imusic on iPad
You need to have Home Sharing On.
Check Settings > Music > Home Sharing (key in your Apple ID & password here, must be the same on computer's iTunes)
Start iPad's Music app, tap the ... More (bottom right), tap Shared.
Choose your iTunes' library and have fun.

    Hi Michael,
I'm glad iTunes is working now!  If you want to locate iTunes plug-ins on your computer, you can find them in the following locations (you may not have the iTunes Plug-ins folder if you do not have plug-ins):
    Mac:
    /Users/username/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins/
    /Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins/
One thing I also wanted to mention is that the "Users/username/Library" is hidden in Lion and Mountain Lion.  You can access it using these steps:
OS X Mountain Lion: What is the Library folder?
The Library folder contains files used by OS X and your apps, including your personal fonts and preferences. The Library folder is hidden. If you need to open it, make sure you are in the Finder, hold down the Option key, and then choose Go > Library.
You can find the full article here:

  • The harddrive holding my itunes library is damaged and I would like to purchase the icloud.  Can I restore files to the icloud without the disk/libraries?

the harddrive holding my itunes library is damaged and I would like to purchase the icloud.  Can I restore files to the icloud without the disk/libraries?  Thanks!

iCloud does not provide a service like Dropbox where you can save random files to it as a way of having external storage.  As for the HD damage, don't you have a backup of the itunes library elsewhere?  If so, copy it to the replacement hard drive, along with any other important files that were on the damaged HD.

  • Tried to use iTunes library from Windows and Mac - lost everything

My iTunes Library is on a NAS (Dlink DNS-323) and until last night, I was only using it with my two macs (both running 10.5.6).
Last night, I wanted to use it from my Vista laptop so I looked up online and realized I can easily do it by renaming the "iTunes Library" file to iTunes Library.itl and double clicking from iTunes on Windows.
It seemed to work because when iTunes opened, I could see my playlists and I saw the message "updating library". I was afraid about the update to the library, so I just exit iTunes at the time thinking it would all be ok.
Guess not. This morning when I opened iTunes from my iMac, it opened with and empty library. I tried to do Library/Import Playlist and it did nothing but add the "standard" playlists to my library. I tried it a few times, with different settings (trying to re-rename the .itl back to just iTunes Library for example) and nothing worked.
Do I have any hope to recreate the library? From now on I will be backing up the NAS also, but meanwhile any ideas?

Your library file was being converted from Mac-based paths to Windows-based paths; apparently iTunes isn't courteous enough to work on a temp file while doing that conversion. You're not going to get it back. (And now you've learned the hard lesson of making backups of your important stuff
If the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file is still in one piece, you can use File menu -> Library -> Import playlist and point the file dialog to the xml file. Just about all the previous iTunes-only metadata will be imported (IIRC, about all you lose is some "Skip" info, and of course, Date Added will reflect the new date of import).

  • I have over 2000 tunes in my ITunes library but I cannot use them because their original files cannot be found. What can I do to correct this ?

I have over 2000 tunes in my ITunes library but I cannot use most of them because their "Original files" cannot be found. What can I do to correct this ?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

  • HT201272 Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store

Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store? When I try it tells me the pruchases have already been downloaded to this computer.

Does your purchased rmusic appears under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) ? If they do and you don't have the cloud symbol against them so as to re-download them, then do you still have the entries for them in your library i.e. where you would normally click on them to play them ? If you do then try deleting them from there (iTunes will be seeing them and assuming that you still have them somewhere) and they should then get the cloud symbol for re-downloading in the Purchased link.
If you aren't in a country where music can be re-downloaded then you could try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page,

Can I purchase a song from itunes from my iphone4, and use it as a ringtone? If so, how?

You can purchase ringtones from the iTunes store. If a song available via the iTunes store is not also licensed by those who own the distribution rights to be sold/downloaded as a separate ringtone, no.

  • My itunes library was damaged and lost most of my songs and playlists

last night my itunes was working fine, but today when i tried to open itunes, it said that my itunes library was damaged and most of my songs and playlists were gone.
i tried re-creating my itunes library, but it didnt help at all.
i did not back up my itunes library.
how do i get my songs and playlists back?
please help! i'm really really desperate to get all the stuff back ):

There are a few things to try.
Make a copy of the one named damaged, and rename it to iTunesLibrary.itl
Look in the Previous iTunes Folder and see if one of those has a fairly recent date.

For any ITL file you find, you can use the shift-start option while opening itunes to see if it give s you any joy.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/8.1/en/15502.html
And of course, going forward, make sure to do regular backups of that ITL file!
