Can an LCD TV work as a Broadcast Monitor thru Matrox Mini for Color?

Hey guys,
since the actual Broadcast monitors are so expensive,
will an LCD tv work as a broadcast monitor thru Matrox Mini for Apple Color?
Thanks,
CJ

It's probably better than nothing. Unless it isn't. Depends on the TV. I always think it's good to view your efforts on a regular television, but because they do their own processing in an attempt to "improve" the image, it's best to take the results with a grain of salt...

Jodie84,
I have just checked your account and found that you indeed have bought a Creative Cloud for Teams subscription but you have assigned the single seat to another user hence you ( If you are using your own Adobe ID ) are getting the trial error message.
Two options : Either reassign the seat to your self or add an additional seat and invite your self in the same Team.

• Can I use the new in December iMac monitor with the mini mac?

Considering buying the new iMac the Dec. issue. I wanted to know if this iMac monitor can also be used as a monitor for the new Mini Mac?

One of those Apple 27" ones would be cheaper: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/mac_accessories/displays

• Viewing HDV sequence / media on Broadcast Monitor?

Is it / or is it not possible to view a HDV sequence or media on Broadcast Monitor via a Firewire Device such as a HDV camcorder?
If so great, if not, what are my options and how can I achieve this?
VV URGENT
Thanks in advance.

I had the opportunity to play around with a Sony HDV camera and FCP yesterday. I got the HDV camera's LCD to display media playing on the Timeline and in the Viewer [after changing prefs in Audio & Video Settings > Playback Output > DV-PAL]. From there I did get the audio signal to loop from the camera through to the broadcast monitor, but unfortunately not the video signal [as you both have stated].
So basically what you are both saying / and what I seem to have confirmed, is that I can not check my work on a broadcast monitor when using HDV without an I/O card?
For those of us without an I/O card, we still have fields, saturation restrictions, flickering graphics etc etc to check that will not show up on a Digital Cinema Desktop Preview. I just don't understand why we can not preview this prosumer [HDV] format on a broadcast monitor without purchasing an I/O card??
It would be greatly appreciated if you guys could please respond / correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks again for your time.

• Alternative to professional broadcast monitors?

So I'm starting up a business - and don't have a lot of money at this stage for equipment. I'd like to get a monitor that is good for color correction - but broadcast monitors are just out of my price range right now.
Since I'm not doing broadcast work, but assuming I will still be editing high quality work that will go to dvd, are there any good alternatives to professional broadcast monitors that can be used for color-correction.
i've noticed most lcd tv monitors on the market suck for editing....what else is there?
And....can anyone tell me why broadcast monitors are so expensive ....what is it about their technology that is truly superior ???
thanks ....

sure they do, it's the bvm series.
i'm going to take a completely contrarian point of view to everyone's (except steve's) argument and argue in favor of a cheap sony 13 inch wega flat screen tv from best buy.
consumer equipment will reveal flaws faster than the so-called "professional" monitors. i use the term "professional" lightly as any older panasonic crt was a hunk of junk and so are the sony pvm '"n" series of monitors. am i advocating that we all use rca or curtis mathis or zenith tvs? good heavens, no, however, too much is made about the quality of the display around here and not enough stink is made about the quality of measuring tools like scopes being used.
i simply cannot fathom how someone making money will spend many thousands of dollars on a display and then rely on the pathetic software scopes. the only software scope that i would rely upon if i were making money doing this would be the new avid plug-in that videotek (or is it tektronix? i looked just yesterday and can't remember) is now making. i can only hope they build it for fcp as well. but this is just my opinion.
how many of the folks using fcp are currently getting anything on the air? how many are going to a film out or even festival distribution displayed with a projector? now, how many of those folks are reading here and then get pounced upon for not using a "broadcast quality" monitor? how your product is being viewed is how you should look at when color grading but in most instances this is completely impractical and expensive.
my experience with broadcast quality is anything goes. i've shaded my shows to consumer tvs and transmission has never said anything to me. i've shaded my shows to ancient crt's that bounced down the road for the last decade and have never been retubed and need it. i've shaded my shows to the latest and greatest lcd monitors and have left at the end of the day with a splitting headache. the point is, there is no "broadcast monitor" standard (there are however, broadcast transmission standards that in the end, we all have to follow if going on the air) and yes a blue check is nice but there are workarounds and i have to use them. yes, a nice bvm is a joy to work with however i did a show just recently looking at 5 bvm monitors and not one of them looked like the next and i didn't have time to go in and properly calibrate crt bias so i picked the one i liked best and used it.
today i'll do a four camera espn basketball game that goes straight to webcast, ESPN 360. logic dictates that i should shade that show on a computer monitor but i won't be able to, instead i'll use the less than professional crt on this particular "mobile broadcast" truck.
again, these are just my opinions. fire at will.

Expanding on what deggie said, with an iPad 1 the app you're using must support video out. Only the iPad 2 can mirror the screen. The apps included with the iPad that output to external monitors are given here:

For third-party apps, consult the app's documentation or contact the developer.

• LCD TV as a broadcast monitor?

Hi all,
Was planning on buying a Cinema Display to do a 3 display setup:
1 - Macbook Pro - library/media
2 - Apple Cinema Display - timeline
3 - LCD flatscreen TV - monitor
Is it possible to use my LCD tv as a broadcast monitor. I`m assuming I would need to buy a ``Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter`` and daisy chain from the Cinema Display thunderbolt) to the LCD TV (HDMI).
Thanks

Sure, you can get a miniDisplayport-to-HDMI adapter to daisy-chain off the Cinema Display and it should work just fine.
LCD TV as client monitor.
Client? If these people are paying you money, shouldn't you guarantee how it's going to look? I guess it depends on your approach to your business, but what if the client is looking at the client monitor and asks you to adjust a certain color or brightness? How do you know if you're really giving them what they're asking for?
The issue is not whether you broadcast or upload. It's just that broadcast standards (i.e.REC 709) are also references for people doing quality work on the web.

• Can I use a Dell W3706MC 37" LCD HDTV as an external NTSC Monitor?

Hello,
I was considering buying this dell TV as a second monitor for my studio as i mostly do audio post production and score music (this size monitor would be excellent for working on scores in my case) on a full time basis but I am expanding into film editing as well.
My question is can i use this as an external NTSC monitor for FCP 4.5HD and version 5? Any help would greatly be appriciated. You can view the tech specs of this TV at http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/lcd_w3706mc?c=ca&cs =CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs

While it might be fine for corporate video or other non-broadcast work, it won't be appropriate for broadcast work. For that you need to buy a broadcast monitor.
The reason is that if you take 20 TVs of various models, and put them side by side (say you went to Circuit City or Best Buy), you wouldn't see the same image twice. They all would be slightly different. Even if you calibrated them, they might all look slightly different. But put 20 broadcast monitors side by side, all calibrated, and you will see exactly the same image and color representation.

• Nested UIData doesn't work with command broadcasting

In November 2004 I submitted the bug report below, and I also reported it on this forum. Other than the automated acknowledgment, I have received no followup. The posting on this forum seems to have been deleted. I'm re-posting it here in case it can be of help to someone, as I've noticed others mentioning nested UIData problems.
The JSF RI UIData caches its data model, which can cause problems if the UIData value references some row data in an outer UIData if two UIData are nested. The RI tries to compensate for this by removing the cached information during certain instances such as encoding and decoding. But the RI neglects to uncache during event broadcasting.
When UIData iterates over its data set (during encoding or decoding, for instance), it iterates through the row index which, after loading the data model, places the correct variable in the request map. Because the data model is cached, the inner UIData would return an unpredictable data model---the data model from the last iteration, for instance, not the data model based upon the outer data model's current row.
UIData compensates for this during encoding and decoding by checking to see if it is nested inside another UIData. For example, within UIData.processUpdates() you'll see:
if (isNestedWithinUIData()) {
model = null;
}This allows a test case to render correctly the nested data set, and even allows a UICommand to queue an event when it is selected. However, UIData.broadcast() does not clear the cache, so by the time the event is actually broadcast, the data model for the row is still set at some other row.
Adding the above code to UIData.broadcast() solves the problem.
(I'm suspicious of this whole caching thing in UIData anyway---what if I construct my own UIData-like thing and nest a UIData inside it? How would I keep UIData from caching its data?)

All right, I've found a solution; I'll post it for anyone in need. It's not particularly elegant but still functional.
First of all I've created a .cmd file in the folder where is located the executable of my interest.
In it, using notepad, I've written as following:
start /affinity 8 FreeTrack.exe
ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 2000 > nul
wmic process where name="FreeTrack.exe" CALL setpriority 256
Note that the /affinity command is optional and not required (however, I needed it). Replace "FreeTrack.exe" with the name of your executable.
The ping part pings a fake IP once and then waits 2000 milliseconds (set a higher waiting time if this one doesn't work).
The third line changes the priority for all the processes under the name of "FreeTrack.exe" to, in my case, realtime.
Priority legend:
Low: 64 Below Normal: 16384 Normal: 32 Above Normal: 32768 High: 128 Realtime: 256
Since the command prompt window appears for 2 seconds and I don't like that, I've created a .vbs file in the same folder of the .cmd file and executable. This hides the cmd window.
I've put the following into the .vbs file (edited with notepad):
Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell" )
WshShell.Run chr(34) & "FreeTrack.cmd" & Chr(34), 0
Set WshShell = Nothing
Replace "FreeTrack.cmd" with your .cmd file name.
I've then created a shortcut on the desktop to the .vbs file and changed the icon to the one of the executable.
Surely this solution won't work if the program keeps reverting back its priority while running.

• 000 to 999 counter Circuit LCD Not working Help

I am trying to outline the design for my project for my circuits class I am pretty new to Multisim, but I have tried everything to get the 7 segment 4 digit LCD and or 3 7 segment Hex to display properly I am not sure if its something wrong with my circuit orthe software. I hooked a logic analyzer to the outputs of the counter 4516B IC so I know that it is counting. There must be a error in the way I am connecting my driver 4543s Please help so that I can begin physically building this circuit and wire wrap.
Thanks in advance.

Have a look at the attached file; I've isolated the two parts you mentioned so that you can see how they work. Press the key A, B, C and D on you keyboard to control the inputs DA to DD and you can see the results on the 7 segment display.
U17, I've turned on the symbol pin name so that you can see which pin is which. A1 to G1 are part of the first 7 segment LED.
Here is a datasheet for the 4543:

I hope this helps.

• Can the AirPort Extreme work as an extender?

Simple question: Can the AirPort Extreme work as a wireless network extender? (I have tried to research this online, of course, but I haven't had much luck.)
Background: The only option from our ISP is a router/modem combination. It used to be plugged directly into my dad's (Dell and Windows) desktop computer, but I was having trouble connecting all my devices wirelessly. So, I moved it into the kitchen and plugged it into the phone line (we have AT&T DSL) and got a USB wireless adapter for my dad's computer (because he didn't think he needed the wireless option on his "fancy" new Dell). I also have a different brand of adapter plugged into my old iMac G3, which I LOVE using.
Since doing this, my dad has constantly complained of his Internet not working correctly, things loading slowly, and having trouble connecting at all. (Full disclosure: he STILL uses the complete desktop version of AOL and refuses to give it up.) However, I've had no trouble on ANY of my devices--the G3, my white MacBook, my iPad, my iPod, or my mom's Kindle Fire. This leads me to believe the problem lies in the fact that he's using AOL because I usually don't have trouble when I briefly use Chrome on his desktop.
I've tried finding different solutions, including flashing an old router to use an extender and researching different extenders and bridges and such, but nothing looks like a viable solution because of all our components.
I'm wondering if the AirPort Extreme (probably the A1143;or any of the other AirPort devices) can work as an extender. To appease my dad, it'd be best to take the modem/router back to his man cave so he can hook it back up to his computer, but I'm not sure if the AirPort can pick up the wireless signal and perhaps be plugged directly into my G3 and otherwise act as an extender for my other devices (while searching for an Internet solution for my G3, I read on here that someone did this, but there was no further information on how it worked) or if I can plug it into the kitchen phone line and keep the USB adapter for the G3 and have wireless access to all my other things.
Help?
(I can't find the original support article where a responder mentioned using the AirPort station with an iMac G3, but i did locate this one: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13080786#13080786)
(My iMac is one of the later ones. It's running 10.4.1 and is a 600MHz model.)

Simple question: Can the AirPort Extreme work as a wireless network extender?
Simple answer: Yes....IF....the AirPort Extreme is extending a wireless network that is being provided by another Apple 802.11n wireless router.
Another way of saying the same thing is that it will take a minimum of two Apple 802.11n wireless routers to extend a signal wirelessly.
The more complex answer involves distances and obstructions involved in the setup, or alternate solutions such as running Ethernet cabling or using Ethernet powerline adapters.
