Can an old Powerbook G4 titanium run OS 10.4

I have got two questions:
- Can I install Mac OS 10.4 on my old Powerbook G4 titanium and upgrade to OS 10.4.9 or OS 10.4.11 for free?
- If my old powerbook can run OS 10.4.9 or 10.4.11 will I still be able to boot in OS 9 since I have a few programs that I use regularily?
Best regards
Thomas

The upgrade to Tiger 10.4 is not free. You have to buy the Tiger installer. Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but is still available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A and M9639Z/A . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray).

  • Can't get PowerBook G4 Titanium 800 MHz to run Leopard 10.5?

I recently bought a PowerBook G4 Titanium 800 MHz A1001 model and I want to install Leopard (10.5) on it.
I have tried both of the "faking out the leopard installation" http://lowendmac.com/osx/leopard/openfirmware.html but it doesn't want to work for me.
    What else can I try?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hello,
To help the op with this.. I tried to install Leopard on my G4 Pismo(Was G3 500) just for giggles.. and by using firewire target disk mode or FTDM.. it did install and boot up.. so yes, I can confirm that this does work.

  • Where can I buy Powerbook G4 Titanium?

I have been searching around Apple Website, but could not find any information regarding powerbook G4 Titanium. Maybe someone can suggest where I can buy the Powerbook Titanium?

The thing to keep in mind whenever buying from eBay, Craigslist, or any other private party classifieds is "buyer beware." I find that there are a lot of people who advertise on Craigslist who try to jack up the "value" of their Macs by offering pre-installed software or a lot of music in their iTunes library. Neither really adds much in the way of any real value and should not even be part of any negotiations as to final selling price. Another thing I find with the folks on Craigslist is that they either don't really know the actual specs of the computers they are selling or they offer misleading info in the hopes that a potential buyer won't know the specs. As with any purchase, first do your research (lowendmac.com and everymac.com offer lots of good info on specs, features, and approximate street value) then meet with the seller in person so you can check out the condition of the computer first hand. If he/she won't or can't meet you, find another seller. The more you know going into a deal, the better off you'll be. I suppose this is just common sense advice, but it's surprising how many people don't take the time to educate themselves.

  • Can an old PowerBook G4 import HDV Footage?

    I have a PowerBook G4 1.5 Ghz, running Leopard.
I want to install Final Cut Express 4, in order to import HDV video.
Do you think I can do this with my old computer, or do I need a new and faster one?
I looked at the "system requirements", they say the software needs at least a G4 processor running at 1.25 Ghz, then it should be all right. But they don't say anything about HDV and G4 processors.
I'm asking because I want to be sure, don't want to buy the program and then find out I can't use it...
    Thank you

    Hi(Bonjour)!
I do HDV on an iMac G4 1 gig of RAM, but the capturing process is longer than with my G5. The rendering time for HDV is longer than regular DV and on a G4 is very long, but can be completed. 1 gig of RAM is short for HDV as 2 gig is recommended.
A dedicated, 7200 rpm, hard drive is recommended to do HDV and maintain a high rate transfert speed. I suspect that the internal one in your book cannot keep the pace. Think about an external.

  • Can an old iMac G3 drive running system 10.2.8 and system 9 be mounted in the secondary drive bay of a G4 800 Mhz running 10.4.11 and boot from the 10.2.8?

I've done this and the G4 800 Mhz boots up from system 9 on the old iMac G3 just fine, but when I boot up from its system 10.2.8, it runs for only 5 minutes or so and the grey screen comes down telling me to re-boot.  I've run Norton on the system 9 disk and system 10 disk utilities on the system 10 disk of the old iMac G3 and all is fine with it.  Is there some incompatibilities with running the old iMac G3 230 Mhz from the G4 800 Mhz that causes this to happen?  I can access all my old files on the iMac G3 when I boot up with extensions off (holding down the shift key when I boot up), but I would like to be able to use the USB functions when I boot it up.

It sounds like you have a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 2002, and according to the program Mactracker, it should be able to run on the OS 9 and the OS 10.2.8.
I don't know which version of Norton (Utilities?) you ran on the old iMac drive, but I suspect that might be the problem.  This is from the iMac Tray Loading Service Source Manual:
    HFS Plus Formatted Drives
The hard drive in the iMac is formatted with HFS Plus (also referred to as Mac OS Extended format). It is important to note that Norton Utilities version 3.5 is not compatible with HFS Plus (or Mac OS Extended format), and in fact, can destroy data on the hard drive.
Norton Utilities version 3.5.3 or 3.5.2 will not attempt to repair a drive formatted with Mac OS Extended format and versions 3.5.1 and earlier cannot recognize that a hard drive is in Mac OS Extended format and can result in hard drive corruption and loss of all data on the drive.
Note: When diagnosing hard drive problems, it is important to verify whether or not the customer may have used the wrong disk repair software for their drive before assuming that the problem is hardware related.
If you experience problems with a hard drive that has been formatted with HFS+, Apple Computer recommends using Disk First Aid 8.2 (which is included on the system software CD that ships with the iMac). Disk First Aid 8.2 can be used to recover data that may have been deleted by Norton Utilities. (See the Symantec Web site at NO LONGER A VALID LINK-REMOVED FROM ARTICLE for more information on Norton Utilities and Mac OS Extended format.)
Some other disk utility and disk locking programs are incompatible with Mac OS Extended format. Before you attempt to use a disk utility or disk locking program, make sure the version you have is compatible with Mac OS Extended format. Check the documentation that came with the program or contact the manufacturer or the vendor that supplied the program.
Use the Get Info command in System 8.1 to determine how a hard drive has been formatted. Drives formatted with HFS will appear as “Mac OS Standard”, while drives formatted with HFS+ will appear as “Mac OS Extended.”
I hope some of this helps.
    Good luck.

  • Old Powerbook running Tiger can't connect to Fios

I have an old Powerbook G4 (titanium, 1 Ghz) with an 802.11b airport card, firmware v 9.52. I am running Tiger (OS X 10.4.11) with all software updates applied. Until a few weeks ago, I was using Charter Communications for my ISP and an Airport Extreme. I connected the Powerbook to the network using WPA security and had no problems.
Then I switched to Fios and am using their router. I have configured it the same way as the Airport Extreme, but keep getting an error message saying that I'm using the incorrect password. I've looked through this forum and done everything others have suggested including making sure that I'm using TKIS, but no luck.
    Any suggestions?

I am having exactly the same trouble.
Email through another network, (say, my home or work wifi) works correctly and I can send and receive messages.
However email when using the T-Mobile wireless network does not connect.
This is obviously not an activation issue.  My account is not deactivated if I can send and receive messages using another network, so using the pin activation page is not the appropriate fix for this problem.

  • Hey i have a old powerbook G4 laptop and i was wondering where can i download the OS ( Mac OSX 10.5.8 Build ( 9L30 ) to do a fresh install my system is running really slow is there any place where i can down load this OS?

Hey i have a old powerbook G4 laptop and i was wondering where can i download the OS ( Mac OSX 10.5.8 Build ( 9L30 ) to do a fresh install my system is running really slow is there any place where i can down load this OS?

    Hello,
Unfortunately Apple do not offer a download for mac OS X 10.5.8. They will only provide updates available for download. ( Normally you would do so once the OS is installed)
To do a fresh install of this software your going to need to buy a retail copy of the disk.
There are some vendors who do still stock the media disk, but they can be expensive.
    Best of luck.

  • I'm trying to migrate data from an old Powerbook G4 to a Macbook running 10.8 - new laptop can't find the target disk

Can anyone help me get a new(er) Macbook that's running Mountain Lion migrate data from an old PowerBook G4 running 10.4.x?
I've restarted the G4 holding down "T" and have the Firewire icon floating around its screen, started Migration Assistant on the Macbook, telling it to get data from a Time Machine back up or other disk, have Firewire cable connected to both laptops, continue and the Macbook is just endlessly "Looking for Other Computers"....
    Any ideas?
    Anyone?

Additionally, When I have the two laptops connected via Firewire, I do see the disk from which I'm trying to migrate data and can copy files, etc.
Not sure if this is helpful or not but thought I'd throw it out there.

  • Where can I find OS 10.4.11 to install to my old PowerBook G4?

    Hello.
I have an old Powerbook G4 on which I had installed OS 10.4.11,
but I can't seem to find the cd to reinstall. It is running a bit slow as it has been many years, and I wanted to format the hard drive and reinstall the same OS.
I also have Mac OS leopard, but i think it might be too heavy for this old machine.
    1. What is the latest OS I can put on this powerbook so that it still runs smoothly?
    2. If i want to install 10.4.11 where can I find it?

  • Firefox cannot be launched code: -0661. I do not have another web browser on my computer. computer is old 10.4.11 How can I get firefox up and running?

When I turned on my computer today, Firefox had a circle with a line through it. Clicking on it I got an error message which reads "Firefox cannot be launched - 0661". I am running an old powerbook G4 OS 10.4.11. There is no other browser on my computer. I have a desktop with internet access. How can I get my laptop up and running?

Disregard the above since Firefox 10 (or any version after Firefox 3.6) won't work on Mac OS 10.4.11. You will have to download Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html and copy it to your old powerbook G4 OS 10.4.11
Ref: [[Firefox will not start]] link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Firefox-not-start#w_firefox-will-not-start-on-os-x-10-4-or-earlier-or-with-a-powerpc-processor

  • I have a Titanium PowerBook G4 (1GHz) running OS 10.4.11.  Is it worth upgrading to OS 10.5?

I have a Titanium PowerBook G4 (1GHz) running OS 10.4.11.  Is it worth upgrading to OS 10.5?  (I also have a newer desktop running Lion and an iPhone 4 running IOS 5).  Thanks.

I upgraded my PowerBook G4 from 10.4 to 10.5 and from 512MB to 1.25GB RAM and thought it was well worth it. It's still in perfect condition, has a SuperDrive and the battery holds a full charge.
I use the following programs every day and they encouraged me to upgrade (clean install!) Leopard 10.5, it's worth the $130 to me:
iPhone requires 10.5, as previous poster stated above- the most important reason that I went to 10.5
Twitterrific 3.24 will run on 10.5 and is the oldest functioning Twitterrific client for 10.5 that will work due to the OAuth requirements, however it will not run at all on 10.4 so 10.4 can no longer use any version of Twitterrific (logging in with older version will fail due to the OAuth requirements which were not present in the older 10.4 versions)
Current version of VLC 1.1.xx is not supported under 10.4
Current 10.x version of iTunes is not supported under 10.4
Safari 5 requires 10.5, will not run at all on 10.4
Echofon requires 10.5, no version of Echofon will run at all on 10.4
Google Earth will not run at all on 10.4

How can I create a start up disk for a old intel core duo running 10.5.8.. Computer works fine, but can't find install disk. Want to use internal disk drive or USD flash drive.

Try calling 1-800-676-2775.  Give the serial number and thy *may* still burn you new install disks designed just for the hrdware in your system (for a fee, something like $160 per disk).  *May* is only because they may not burn disks for Leopard anymore.
If they do not burn them for you, you can buy Leopard disks off Amazon or eBay for about $200.
Have you considered Snow Leopard?.  Those disks only cost $19 (single user) or $29 (5-user license) through Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE.

  • Can I install Mac OS X 10.5 on a Powerbook G4 already running Mac OS X 10.6? I lost my disc of 10.6 and can only find my 10.5 disc as I'm selling my MacBook and wiping the hard drive for a complete reset.

A PowerBook G4 can't run Snow Leopard OS 10.6, however, it can run Leopard OS 10.5. But you must use a retail (black) Leopard install DVD.
What does the selling of your MacBook have to do with installing Leopard on your PowerBook?

  • Can't Install Mac OS 10.4 in Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium

    Hello!
I have an Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium (400Mhz). My system crash when I tried to enter and hang up in the Apple logo. I used Diskwarrior and TechTool Pro to identify the problem, but there;s no error. I inserted the 10.4 installer and format the had disk. When I tried to install Mac OS 10.4, I receive the following error:
"Essentials Installation. An error ocurred, try again"
This appears a few seconds and the screen goes blue forever. I checked the surface hard disk with TechTool Pro again and the HD seems to be OK.
Anyone can help me to know why when I tried to install 10.4, the installation hang up in the Essentials part?.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello and Thanks for answer:
Yes, I have the Retail Tiger Installer disk. The problem is WHEN the installation is taking part. When a installer disk don't work with the computer, the message "This software can't be installed in this computer" and the SHUTDOWN or RESTART button appears.
In this case, all work OK until the part INSTALLING ESSENCIALS when the screen goes blue. Now, I install Mac OS 10.3 and all the installation go OK. Upgrade via Software Update to 10.3.9 and update again via Installer CD 10.4 and all works OK. Now i'm upgrading to 10.4.11 using again Software Update. The problem is WHEN i try to install from the Apple Mac OS 10.4 Retail direct to the PowerBook G4. I tried zap the PRAM and the problem persist. NOTE: When I purchase the 10.4 DVD I make an security copy. I use the security copy and the error show up....then I use the original DVD suspicious an damage in the backup disk, but the original make the same error.

Unfortunately there is little you can do, Lion will not run on your machine.
However it is possible to access some features of iClould while staying with SL. If you go to iCloud you will see the web interface for the cloud.
Some but not all functionality is here. Check it out and see if it meets your needs.
