Can Any SATA Drive (including SATA 1 drives) be Used on MacPro?

Can one install and use any SATA drive (including a SATA 1) drive on a Mac Pro?
I am thinking about using a WD Caviar SE16 but it would appear to be a SATA 1 drive (1.5 GB/s drive).
Do all SATA drives have the same connector (that is compatible with the mating connector inside the MacPro)?
Rob

While SATA II drives should provide generally better performance any SATA drive will work in a Mac Pro.

    I had similar problems with the WLS deploy tool. I think they were solved by making sure that I started the tool from the directory that contained the root package of my EJBs.
    It might work...

  • HT2213 Can a flash drive be used instead of a CD?

    I need to restore firmware to my 17" MacBook Pro A1229.  My problem is I have no optical drive.  It completely stopped working and I am waiting to replace it.  Is there any way to restore the firmware using a flash drive instead of a CD?  Thank you

    When I held down the option key the only one that pops up is the Macintosh HD.  I saw no sign of the USB stick.
    I have no idea if this would help or how to go about it... but I have been successful connecting through Firewire Target Disk mode and also at a single level user.  Can I reach and install the firmware from either of those methods???
    I just don't know what else I can do....??  Im not a Apple Tech... anything I know is self taught and right now I don't have a clue....:(  I have repeatedly asked Apple for help and have been refused on all fronts.  I really thought 30+ years of customer loyalty would have counted more to them.  Please forgive my dumping.... it's not directed at you.  You have been the first person to respond to me and I appreciate that more than you know   It might sound crazy but I have never been so utterly let down by a Company in my entire life... They have almost crushed out my spirit and joy that I once found with computers.  (sigh)
    I will hold on to the sliver of hope that you can tell me something else to try.....

  • Time Machine - Can 2 Hard Drives be used as 1?

    Hi,
    I have two external hard drives (both are 320 GB) and connect via USB 2.0. I was wondering if I could set them up so that my Mac would treat them as one hard drive when they are both connected. My mac has a larger 750 GB hard drive and I would like to combine the two 320 GB externals (for 640 GB) to use them for my time machine back up. Is this possible to do?
    Thanks,
    James

    It is Recommended that Time Machine has its Own (single) Drive that is at least Twice the size of the Drive(s) it is intending to Backup.

  • Can any DB2 guru help? Configuring AppServer to use DB2

    Eventually, I need my EJB example to shuffle data between Oracle and DB2
    databases.
    I am currently trying to adapt my BMP entity (works with Oracle) to run with DB2
    (personal edition). Have run into two problems.
    1) Configuring the connection pool (via admin tool)
    I've got:
    - db2jcc.jar and db2jcc_license_cu.jar added into AppServer's classpath
    -connection pool with com.ibm.db2.jcc.DB2SimpleDataSource as a javax.sql.DataSource
    - validation as auto-commit; isolation as default for JDBC driver
    - properties: name=moi password=pwd dataBaseName=mine driverType=4
    portNumber=50000 serverName="mybox.here.com"
    Attempt to "ping" this datasource fails "Error getting connection from EIS"; server log
    has error in some helper function called from
    com.ibm.db2.jcc.DB2SimpleDataSource.getConnection(DB2SimpleDataSource.java:171)
    SqlException:userid length 0 is not allowed;
    I've tried adding userid as an extra property (same as name) but that made no difference;
    What else do I need to set in order to connect to DB2?
    2) My eventual application will need transactions and so XADataSources; when
    I was trying to set up connection I did try DB2XADataSource as a javax.sql.XADataSource.
    But then i got an error that basically stated "type 4 driver not licensed for XA".
    Is this some limitation of personal edition DB2?
    How does one configure a DB2 XADataSource?

    My last discussions with the folks at IBM indicate you must use the type 2 driver
    Here is the config info:
    db2.dbName=cts
    db2.server=retriever.central
    db2.port=50000
    db2.classes=${jdbc.lib.class.path}/db2jcc.jar:${jdbc.lib.class.path}/db2jcc_license_cu.jar:${jdbc.lib.class.path}/db2java.zip
    db2.dataSource=com.ibm.db2.jcc.DB2SimpleDataSource
    db2.properties=user=${db2.user}:password=${db2.passwd}:databaseName=${db2.dbName}:driverType
    =2:deferPrepares\=false
    You would use the above properties when using asadmin or the gui for configuring the driver.
    You must also have the following environment variables set and available to the appserver and to the appclient
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/db2user/sqllib/lib:${j2ee.home}/lib
    DB2DIR=/opt/IBM/db2/V8.1
    DB2INSTANCE=db2user
    INSTHOME=/usr/db2user
    VWSPATH=/usr/db2user/sqllib
    THREADS_FLAG=native
    The values of the above will depend on your configuration and are derived from invoking
    [db2client user directory]/sqllib/db2cshrc or db2profile

  • Can any one help in creating a sales order

    Can any one help in creating a sales order  using va01 transaction ?
    I have a reference sales order number .
    Reason why I need this sales order :- I need it to check my task.
    The task was to generate a routine using VOFM ,create a Ztable with fields:sales area and condition types .The routine is activated if the combination of condition types and sales area exists in the Ztable.
    Can anyone tell me what is relationship between the three :Ztable ,routine and sales order?

    VA01 - Create Sales Order
    Use these steps to create a sales (or project) order for the purpose of billing a cost reimbursable project. The sales order is the document that links the sponsor to the project.
    Get started (SAP menu path, fast path)
    Create sales order: initial screen
    Create project order: overview
    Create Variant to simplify VA01 data entry
    1. Get Started
    SAP menu path: (not in role ZSBM)
    SAP Fast Path
    At the Command Line, enter: /nVA01
    2. Create Sales Order: initial screen
    Order Type: (Use default = "ZPS" for Project Order)
    Organizational data: (Use defaults)
    Sales organization ("1000" for Sponsored Billing)
    Distribution channel ("10" for MIT Distribution Channel)
    Division ("10" for MIT Division)
    or ENTER
    The Create Project: Overview screen displays, as shown below.
    3. Create Project Order: overview
    Sold-to party (type in 10-digit sponsor ID number, as shown below)
    In Material field of first line item: (type PROJECT to identify as sales order for sponsor billing, as shown below)
    (or ENTER)
    Result: A field for entering the WBS element displays, as shown below.
    WBS element (type in 7-digit WBS number for project)
    Click on  or F11 to SAVE.
    A message states that Project order XXXX has been saved.
    4. Create Variant to simplify VA01 data entry
    Run VA01 as described in step 1, so that the "Create Project Order: overview" screen displays (shown at start of step 3).
    On Item Overview tab, scroll to right to find WBS element column (about half way across).
    Click on column title, WBS Element; hold and drag all the way to left; then drop next to Material column, as shown below.
    Click on tiny (multicolored) icon  above vertical scroll bar (shown above, to far right) to display Table Settings dialogue box, shown below.
    Under Maintain Variants, type name for Variant, for example "my_settings" (leaving Use as standard setting checked); click on Create; then click on Save button to close dialogue box.
    From now on, the WBS element column displays next to Material column when you run VA01.

  • Can both in-row and off-row LOBs be used in a where clause?

    We are preparing to upgrade ASE from version 15.5 to 16.0.  One of the features that is very appealing has to do with the changes made concerning the handling of LOBs.  In particular, the ability to use a LOB column in search arguments (where clause) is something our developers have longed for since the retirement of the full-text search option.  So, in version 16.0, can any column with a datatype of text be used as a search argument? Are there any restrictions.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Kevin,
    The in-row LOB feature is mainly designed to save space when a text column has many short values, which is a particularly bad problem when the server uses a large page size (like 16K) as ASE would use a full 16K to store even a single bye "Y".  I don't think the feature made any change in how text can be used in search arguments.  i.e. you can still use LIKE and IS [NOT] NULL, but not others.
    Example:
    1> create table t (x text in row (8))
    2> go
    1> insert t values ("abc")
    2> insert t values ("abcdefghijkl")
    3> go
    (2 rows affected)

  • HP Pavilion 500-210 QE Can't boot from any hard drive.

    Good Evening. As you can see from the subject, my computer just can't boot from any hard drive that I put on it. I tried swapping the power supply, the SATA cable, resetting the BIOS, enabling legacy boot, changing from AHCI to IDE and RAID...
    When I get to the BIOS setup, I can see the hard drive and its specifications, but it just won't boot or show up when I'm trying to install a new OS. I'm not an expert, but I think the problem might be in the motherboard SATA ports, but I'm not sure. Just to make sure, I did try another hard drive and it didn't work aswell.
    I was also thinking about buying an external hard drive and instaling my OS on that, but I don't even know if that's possible and I would really like to have my computer working again.
    Thank you for your attention!

    What is the installed operating system?
    Did you make a recovery disk set?
    Did you happen to make a  Windows 8.1 startup disk or USB recovery thumbdrive?
    Have you tested the hard disk?
    Press the power button and then immediately tap the Esc key. In the Startup menu, choose F2 for Diagnostics. In the HP Basic System Diagnostics menu choose hard disk. Run the test and post the results here.
    The issue you are facing has nothing to do with the SATA ports. It is a configuration issue. Your PC is a modern one and its BIOS (UEFI) is far more advanced than what you may have seen before.
    If you want to install a different operating system then you will have to make a few changes in the BIOS configuration. Secure Boot is turned on by default for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. If you try installing a different OS without turning this off then your system won't boot up. You may be running into this if you are trying to install another operating system.
    The image below is  what will be seen in the BIOS of your PC in the security tab --> . In the secure boot configuration options do not clear the secure boot keys! Those keys are your operating system license activation keys.

  • Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

    Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

    You can buy any 3'5" SATA hard drive for the iMac. You can buy a hard drive at OWC.
    Note that Late 2009 and newer iMacs have the temperature sensor inside the hard drive, so it's important to get one with that sensor. In this case, I recommend you to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller and get your hard disk replaced

  • P31 Neo V2 , confused by SATA/IDE? SATA drive seemingly using UDMA 5?

    HI guys.  I am a little confused after using slipstreamed SATA drivers to install XP Pro SP3 on my new PC and  a SATA 2 500gb drive.
    When I look in device manager I dont see any SCSI controllers at all,  under IDE controller I see ICH7 SATA and ICH7 UDMA drivers AND TWO primary IDE channels and TWO secondary channels.
    When I look into the chanels, I only have 2 items attached (correct), one IDE DVD drive using one of the primary channels at UDMA 4 and the SATA 2 500 GB which is seemingly using the other primary IDE and running at UDMA 5!
    How can I get the 500gb SATA 2 drive to use the SATA 2 - 3gb channel which is advertised for the board?  At the moment it seems to be using IDE compatibility mode and I cant get it to move over to SATA whatever I do.  The board has no AHCI option in the bios, only SATA on/off, IDE on/off.  The default is both on, and thats how I installed windows XP.
    Have I been conned when it said SATA 3gb capable?

    If none are needed then none will be used
    I know.  That is why I said it was unnecessary for this mainboard (none of the drivers are needed).

    IS he wrong?
    Not entirely. Part of your statement in that forum was wrong.  This part of your comment was correct:
    Quote
    that its meant to be that way.
    But this one wasn't:
    Quote
    SATA is a form of IDE apparantly
    SATA is not really a "form of IDE" (I never told you that and that user is right when he says "thats not correct").  The IDE/Legacy Mode is an operating mode of the SATA Controller which will allow Windows to handle SATA Drives as IDE Devices (for maximum plug&play compatibility). It does not mean that the SATA Drives operate as IDE Devices (or are IDE devices).
    And this is what that user said as well:
    Quote
      because your mainboard has Legacy modus enabled for the SATA controler/ports
    There is no contradiction here.  And to be more precise:  The SATA Controller of the ICH7 Southbridge only supports IDE/Legacy Mode, so there is no way to put it into any other operating mode (AHCI or RAID).
    I will attach a screenshot of my Device Manager (I use the German Version of XP, but you will find the important information anyway).  I use a P45 Platinum.  The SATA Controller integrated into the ICH10R Southbridge is currently running in IDE/Legacy Mode.  My SATA-II HD is listed as being attached to the one of the Secondary IDE Channels.  As you can see, Windows shows "UDMA 5".
    I have used this drive on a number of Intel Boards (975X/ICH7DH Chipset, P35 Platinum/ICH9R Chipset, P965 Neo Combo/ICH8 Chipset).  Whenever the SATA Controller is set to IDE/Legacy Mode, Windows will report IDE Channels and "UDMA 5".  It is a side effect of the IDE/Legacy Mode (for which no SATA Drivers exist (at least not for Intel Chipsets) and no descriptive value whatsoever.  This is basically the price you pay for such a plug & play compatibility mode (make Windows believe it is an IDE Drive), but it does not mean the drive is not operating within in specifications of SATA-II.

  • Can a hard drive be faulty without reporting any issues?

    Hi all, advice really most appreciated Hope this isn't too waffley for you all...
    I have a 24" intel iMac (Core 2 Dual, white version, stock 320Gb HDD). It is out of warranty.
    Over the last few weeks it has been getting VERY slow before finally becoming unusable. This appears to be when any hard drive access is required. Finder windows were taking literally minutes to appear (with spinning beach ball).
    I did all the usual stuff such as repairing permissions, verified drive and ran a full Onyx cleanup. This all made no difference. I ran a Leopard archive-and-install. This took 10 hours! I remember the original Leopard install taking 30 minutes so somethings not right here. No improvement. I formatted the drive using 'write zeros' - which estimated 3 days to complete, but I stopped it after 12hrs.
    I did a time machine restore to an external firewire drive, which I have now been running from for over a week, without a single issue. All is back to normal speed. (I'm surprised at just how fast it runs from an external firewire 800 drive, as I expected to notice a difference - I don't)
    So, I now have a blank internal drive to test:
    I ran disk utility repair disk. All OK.
    I ran Disk Warrior. All OK.
    I ran Techtool Pro 4 full hardware tests including disk surface scan. All reported OK including hard drive controller.
    I ran Drive Genius surface scan - zero bad blocks.
    So, do I have a failing hard drive or not????
    I have read about similar symptoms here for a failing iMac drive but usually one of the hardware tests reports bad sectors. I have no such results, or any other symptoms.
    Advice most welcome.

    Hi tvrs3
    {quote:}So, do I have a failing hard drive or not????{quote}
    Try the Apple Hardware Test on your Install Disk, it might find a funky Serial ATA connection or problem with the Serial ATA bus?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
    Sense all the other test say the HD is OK, you might try restoring the Internal HD from your working External HD?
    1. While booted from and running your External HD open Disk Utility.
    2. Select the Internal HD's icon on the sidebar, then click the Restore tab
    3. Now drag the External HD's icon into the Source box, the Internal HD's icon into the Destination box and click Restore.
    {quote:}(I'm surprised at just how fast it runs from an external firewire 800 drive, as I expected to notice a difference - I don't){quote}
    I can also boot and run normally from a clone on my FireWire 400 External HD without noticing much of a difference.

  • How to setup x2 sata W/D Raptor drives not using raid

    Hi all,
    I am new to this forum so please be kind.
    I have just got myself this NE02 board along with 2 W/D Raptor SATA Hard Drives.
    I have seem many instructions in these groups about how to configure sata drives using a raid configuration.
    What I am looking to do is basically install 2 Raptor SATA drives not using raid,
    And also have 2 ide cdrom drives.
    Can someone please come back with a nice simple if that can be done! configuration on how i can best achive this.
    Many thanks for all your help.
    Silent2004

    In bios under Integrated Peripherals, On Chip ATA Operating Mode set
    Native Mode
    ATA Configuration - SATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
    Configure SATA as Raid - no
    Read the raid thread at the top anyway, as you may want to install the drivers during the XP install in case you change your mind later.
    Also, during your Windows installation, just connect a single SATA drive untill you are up and running.
