Can anybody suggest how I can retrieve my photos?

I have removed an SDHC card from my camera and inserted it into the appropriate slot in my Macbook, but there is no response. Nothing I click on in iPhoto is responding, except to show pre-existing photos I got through e-mail, previously. The 'Help' section is, as usual, useless - it only mentions retrieval from an e-mail or a camera or CD - nothing about how to retrieve from a memory card. Anyone out there who can explain simply how this is supposed to work? Tx

It's supposed to work, simply. The SDHC card should appear on your Desktop, as well as in iPhoto's Sidebar. iPhoto should ask you if you would like to import its pictures. The media on which they are stored doesn't really matter to iPhoto.
Is it possible your MacBook Pro's card reader is simply inoperative? Go to the  (Apple menu) > About This Mac, and click More Info... then System Report.
Your card reader should appear under Hardware thus

If you imported the pics from your camera roll to your computer, you can sync it back using itunes.
If you don't have either, then sorry there is no way to get those photos on your phone.

On my Ipad 2, I deleted my photos from camera roll, photo stream and imported photos. I did not know that my photos were also being deleted from my albums. Is there anyway I can retrieve these photos from back up or from Icloud ? Pierre

If you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup you can restore to that.

I took it to a ohone shop today and they're going to try and fix the phone without altering the memory, but apparently that's quite hard to do with IPhones
That will void any support from Apple. If you take the device to an Apple store you would be able to get an out of warranty replacement. A third party shop may make things worse and end up costing you more. Apple does not sell parts so all the third party shop will be able to use are parts from damaged or stolen devices. If the third party shop cannot fix the device you will have to pay full price for a replacement phone rather than the discounted price from Apple.

Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync process remain on your computer.
Photos in the Camera Roll can be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera which is not done with iTunes. With a Mac, this can be done with iPhoto or with the Image Capture application.

Try restoring the backup again. Sometimes it's successful the second time. You could also try restoring an older backup. iCloud will have your last 3 backups is you have sufficient storage space in your account.

Photoshop Elements never stores the photos just links to them. They will be in the same location on your disk that they always were.
If you are looking for photos on photoshop.com, Adobe shut this down last year. Compatible photos will have been transferred to a Revel account for you with the same ID and password - https://www.adoberevel.com/signin. Note though that PSE10 does not integrate with Revel like it did with photoshop.com.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and install any updates available.
Navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all contents and settings on the device you want to restore.
When this completes and the Set-Up Assistant starts, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from.
