Can anyone help me clear up this AMD vs Nvidia GPU thing?
Hi all. Bit of a tricky one, this.
I'm building a PC for PS and PP (amongst other things), and I'm trying to choose the best graphics card for hardware acceleration in CS6 - predictable, I know.
Absolutely everyone - including Adobe - says that only Nvidia cards (i.e. CUDA) are supported for Mercury GPU acceleration in Windows, except for three AMD cards on MacBook Pros only. (Official list here and an addendum here.)
So far so good. Nvidia card it is. But then, while making one final check, I stumble across this little announcement:

In which AMD shows off OpenCL hardware acceleration on a Windows PC in CS6. It all looks pretty official - Adobe supplied the test images. I'm also pretty sure I'm not hallucinating. CS6. Radeon. Windows 7. Yup. All there:
Test system was a notebook with AMD A8-3530MX APU with AMD Radeon™ HD 6620G Graphics, 1.9GHz, 4G 1600 DDR3 Memory, Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit.
It's unlikely to be a typo, since the article also says:
Taking the example of a mainstream notebook PC based on an AMD A8-3530MX, Liquify is up to 456%* faster when accelerated by AMD Radeon™ graphics technology in the APU.
Unless I'm missing something blindingly obvious (always possible) - AMD are clearly talking about OpenCL + CS6 + Mercury + Windows.
So now I'm totally confused. If I get a Radeon card, will hardware acceleration work? What's going on? Do Adobe support this? Do they even know it happened? Did the AMD rep "misspeak"? Am I talking about an elephant in the room?
Too many questions. So I'll boil it down to two:
If everyone is saying Nvidia only for Windows - why does AMD apparently disagree?
And if it's a toss-up between AMD/OpenCL and Nvidia/CUDA - which one has the performance edge?
Thanks in advance for any light you folks can cast on this. I'm in a world of confusion right now.
I share the frustration about readily learning what cards can accelerate the Mercury Playback Engine with Premiere Pro 6.03. The GTX 680 is supported on Windows as of 6.03 but the PP spec page has still not been updated.
As recent as after the release of 6.03 in September, 2012, AMD demonstrated a preview build of Premiere Pro MPE running with OpenCL.

While updating iphone software to 5.0.1, I am getting error that Iphone could not be updated because the firmware file not compatible.

First did a full back up of iphone using iTunes
Put iphone into Recovery Mode ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 ). Erases all user data and settings!
Disconnected USB cable from iphone
Powered off iphone by holding down Sleep/Off button until slider appeared, slid to off, waited until screen dark
Pressed and kept holding Home button while plugging cable back into phone
I still saw the graphic on the iphone that said to plug into iTunes, so I unplugged and re-plugged cable. (I may have released the Home button too soon)
Recovery Mode alert came up in iTunes.
Followed all iTunes prompts to restore phone - it downloaded and sucessfully installed iOS 5.0.1
iphone did not appear in iTunes due to missing pairing file (that made me nervous)
iphone was now at factory settings. I followed prompts on iphone screen to start reactivation process
Eventually the iphone asked if I wanted to restore from a back-up (whew!)
A window opened in iTunes and I was able to select my previous back-up file for the restore
A full restore from back-up then occured
I also allowed a carrier settings update to occur when prompted (not sure that happens in all cases)
When the restore was done I had to re-enter some passwords, but everything was there
iOS is now 5.0.1 (9A406). The whole process took about an hour. -

I just got the iPhone 5. It's completely synced and working. All my contacts are loaded. However, caller ID is not working when I receive a call or a text. Can anyone help me out with this?
Well, assuming all of the above, Notifications, etc., it just might be time for a visit to the Apple tore genius center for a session with the techs. See if it is a fault in the hardware or just an iOS reinstall is the answer.
One more thing you could try, backup so you have a record of content, then restore to factory conditions be an Erase All Contents and Settings. Then restore from the backup you just made. That has helped some with WiFi problems, may be it would work with your problems.
But with that behavior of another app with problems, the geniuses looks like a less stressful thing to do. -

I recently used an external hard drive to back up photos etc from my mac, I didn't do a full system back up. Since then a finder window titled 'client node' keeps popping up every time i hit the spacebar. Can anyone help me please stop this happening?
Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

the change to small screen icon in top right hand corner of screen has stopped working. Can anyone help.
When you use the maximize/restore button, the window is restored to its last size. Some websites use a script to enlarge the window to its maximum size so when you switch from maximized to restored you hardly notice any change. You may have to manually resize the window by dragging the lower right corner. Does that help, or is the button just completely not working??

I just bought a Blackberry Torch 9800.. I have been downloading applications and recently upgraded one of my trial apps to the pro.. but I cannot get the pro version to work. I have activated the account and registered the license key and still nothing... and now I have this crazy icon I cannot seem to find the meaning for it anywhere.. It looks like a phone with a red star above it. I do know that this mean there is an "upgrade" but I don't know what to do to get it to "upgrade" I have deleted and reinstalled the program and still have the trial version... If anyone can help I would certainly appreciate it It is the call control pro application

Can anyone help me understand what this problem is with Desktop Manager that I am having???
Hi everyone! I have downloaded the Desktop Manager Software on to my desktop. I've clicked on the "media" option in the main menu.
I am brought to a screen that has 2 options. "Media Manager" and " Blackberry Media Sync".
Now, I want to download themes and wallpaper, but in order to do that, I need to select "Media Manager" correct? ... Unfortunately this option is not available. I have my blackberry on, and is connected to the USB port. I am able to click "start" on the "Blackberry Media Sync" option, but not on Media Manager. If anyone could help me out, this would be greatly appreciated. I am going absolutely insane trying to figure this out! Thx for your help!!!!

~LinzIt seems clear to me that if you unplug your AirPort Extreme and those Wi-Fi networks still appear, they are not being created by your Extreme but by someone else's router. They won't be useful to you.
To eliminate confusion, open System Preferences > Network, and select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button. In the "Preferred Networks" list, select each Network Name and click the "–" (minus) button. Check the box "Remember networks this computer has joined". Click OK, then Apply.
Then select your PalmSprings network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu. Ignore any others that may appear there.
If you still have funky problems, try renaming your AirPort Extreme's network to something other than PalmSprings. Use "Palm Springs" (including the space character - spaces are OK) or something else. Other networks with similar or identical names will just confuse things.
Use a non-trivial WPA/WPA2 password for your Wi-Fi network. Give your Extreme base station a non-trivial password as well. These ought to be different from one another, but are not required to be. Doing so will preclude any concern about your network being "hacked". -
Can anyone help with clearing space on my Mac Mini, it says the hard drive is full and runs slowly.
Please help, we got the Mac Mini from a family member so it may have his stuff on it but no longer required, we have only put a smal amount of data on it so don't believe we have over filled it. I backed up to a hard drive all photos etc as I thought it may be them filling it, now I cannot even scan a document to it. Is there any way to Defrag it as you can normally do to a windows system as well as either declutter it or restore the whole thing.

SmithyThe first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support. -

I am connecting from a Win 8.1 machine at home into a Win 7 machine at work. I connect through Dell Global VPN.
This works ok wirelessly, but in order to get better performance I wanted to connect to the internet via wired ethernet instead.
I can get ethernet working on home machine and connect to internet - no problem. But whenever I try to log into work machine that way, it doesn't like it and says there is an internal error.
Just to re-iterate, this works fine wirelessly, just not via ethernet. I can connect to VPN ok but can't access Win 7 machine via ethernet.
If I switch back to wireless, it works.
I would love to resolve if anyone has suggestions how to get to the bottom of it?

I need some help with the GUI design.
Have you tried the line inputs on the back of your FirePod? If you update its firmware (not sure if you will need to or not), I seem to remember hearing that the FirePod can run without FW connection, i.e. stand alone. In this mode with the outs from your mixer into line ins 1-2 (2nd from left on the back) it should work fine. I say should because I have never tried. However, these are used for returns from an external effects unit. I assume here, and the important word is assume, that there are two so that they can be used as a stereo send or as a mono send. Worth a try! Let us know how it goes.
