Can anyone identify "hostmgr.app"?

I recently turned on my Mac's firewall since I was getting some annoying adware interruptions in my browsers.  Coincident with that, whenever I open my MacBook Pro after it's been sleeping I get a request to allow "hostmgr.app" to have access.  I routinely deny it but for all I know, it may be a necessary utility.  I did some Googling about it but didn't find anything definitive.  Hoping someone on these boards can help.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. The firewall does not block adware, and it serves no purpose at all if you're behind a router on a private network.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.

  • Can anyone identify this part?

Very early on after getting my Mac I noticed a creaking noise, it didn't bother me and thought nothing of it. A couple of months ago I decided to clean it out as it was getting rather sluggish and to be honest that with a declutter, I have seen an improvement, however upon closing the creaking disappeared. Again I thought nothing of it. I decided to open it today and have noticed that one of the plastic clips? That connects the board to the metal prongs on the case is broken can anyone identify it so I can look for a replacement.
    Many thanks

Thanks for the advice. Just don't want to waste money on apps trying to get the right on. Not looking to do too much, just add filters maybe create a pie chart. Will the app you mentioned give added sums at the end of the spreadsheet like it would on the windows version?

  • Can anyone recommend an app similar to idvd?

I don't know why Apple got rid of iDVD but can anyone recommend an app for burning an iMovie project to DVD?

I don't know why Apple got rid of iDVD
Apple is the largest media company in the world. They sell nothing on disk. It is to their financial advantage to have the physical possession of movies go away.  (I am not participating in this.)
can anyone recommend an app for burning an iMovie project to DVD?
    Yes, iDVD.
Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

  • Can anyone recommend an app for downloading bank statements (.csv/.qif) directly on to my iPad

Can anyone recommend an app for downloading bank statements (.csv/.qif) directly on to my iPad that will allow me to analyse my money flow....no account management needed. I just need something v simple that can take my statement and produce graphs etc....thanks

1, Photos are stored within your computer's iTunes, you just use iTunes as a means for trasnferring them to the iPad. Connect your iPad to your computer and select it on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.
If you want more control over the photos that you copy to the iPad (e.g. the ability to delete them directly on the iPad, re-order them etc) then you could consider a third-party photo-management app instead of the built-in Photos app e.g. Photo Manager Pro
2, options include Apple's Pages app for Word documents and Numbers for Excel spreadsheets.  And from third-parties apps such as Documents To Go ('premium' version) and QuickOffice Pro HD.
3, You first need an app on the iPad that supports the type of file that you want to copy to it - the iPad doesn't have a file system like a 'normal' computer, everything has to be associated with an app. As to how you then get the file to your chosen app will depend upon what the app supports - different apps will have different ways of copying their content to/from a computer e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc.

Can anyone identify the extension MaggniPeica 1.5? It appeared in my extension list, and the only accompanying info is that it updated today. I have it disable for the moment. I am sure it is probably nothing worrisome, but I do not recognize it, and a Google search turned up nothing except some “almost matches” written in Spanish. Unless those pages were asking about a red jacket, a telephone, and if I knew what day it is; my limited Spanish is useless. Thank you for humoring me.

I noticed the id as I perused the system details. In had an inkling that may be the case. Thank you for confirming. After reading the troubleshoot issues via your link, your answer makes sense. One thing I failed to mention, I had issues last night, uploading images to both outlook (Siverlight kept crashing) and facebook. Thank you for responding in such a timely manner.

Can anyone suggest an app to download for SMS messaging for iphone 3G as the message application factory installed is pretty useless and doesnt keep your sent messages in a sent folde and has no folders unlike most messaging features on other phones.

Why do you need a Sent folder?  iOS's Messaging interface lays each conversation out like a chat or IM.  Personally, I find that much more convenient.

  • Can anyone suggest a app or programme for creating a simple text based logo with a font I already own?

    Hi.
I run my own company and would like to create my own simple text based logo using a font I've downloaded. Can anyone suggest an app or programme that will be simple enough for a dunce like me to create vectored graphics and reliable enough to create something professional and usable, please?
    Thanks.

I believe if you copy the font into the font folder, any application should be able to use that font.

  • HELP: Can anyone identify this E61 standby icon??

I suddenly have a strange unidentified icon appearing in the upper right of the standby screen, right beside the wifi indicator. I've never seen it before, and now all of a sudden it's just there and never goes away.
To me it looks like either a car door or a padlock. I'm attaching a picture here below, I couldn't get it to focus very well but you can kind of see the gist of it, right in the upper right corner of the screen, beside the windmill thing that's the wifi icon.
This is driving me crazy, can anyone tell me what it is?? Please?
    Picture here: http://dharmastaff99.dh.funpic.org/Dcp01474a.jpg

I emailed Nokia Customer Care about this and included the screenshot. They replied saying that this icon indicated a fax message received by my E61, and that I should contact my service provider for more information on how to retrieve it etc.
My service provider of course, does not offer fax messaging or know anything about it, and insisted that it was no such thing on their end causing this indicator to appear. Typical.
Just to be thorough, I called my voicemail box and listened-to and erased all messages I had, including older ones I'd saved and never deleted. At that point both the voicemail indicator and fax message icon disappeared. Why it was there in the first place, I'm not sure.
Thanks for all the help from all.. I too considered various possibilities related to the memory card, apps, attached devices etc, but was able to rule those out by doing a hard reset without any SD card intalled, and still seeing the indicator.
I still think that it would be better suited to an open car door alert though...

  • Can anyone recommend an app or a way to show photo places (ios7)

I have a mac (with iphoto/aperture) and import my photos fro my camera - tag, geotag and add names and then sync to my ipad (ios 7) .
On my ipad I used to browse photos from the map, by zooming in. With the photoviewer, you can map places for a collection or moment - but I can't see how to do this for all my photos, just by year.  Lots of my photos are of the same place, just each year - so it would be nice to have a way of grouping them.
Since the built in photos app no longer supports places, has anyone found a good way of viewing all your photos by place? or is there a trick with iphoto or the built in photo app I've not yet found?

You don't need an app for that.
Launch iTunes. From the iTunes menu bar top of your screen click File > Display Duplicates
Right or select a track in the list then click Delete.
If you have duplicates that are contiguous, (ie., in sequence), hold down the Shift key then right or control click then click Delete. That will delete all the selected tracks all at one time.
