Can anyone reccomend a router?

Yesterday, I was certain about getting a Linksys WRT54G Router. Now, after reading many posts on the forums, i'm not so sure. At the moment, all I have is a cable modem, which plugs straight into my PC (Running Linux), via Ethernet. It may also be worth mentioning that I get my IP through DHCP.
I plan on getting a MacBook in the coming few days, and will obviously need an internet connection for it. I want a router which I can plug my modem straight into, and plug the router into my PC (So that I can get an internet connection on my MacBook even when my PC is turned off).
The Linksys router seemed ideal for the job. However, it seems that it doesnt have very good support for Mac's. Can anyone reccomend a router that will do the same job, but with decent support for Mac's, at a similar price? One other router I have looked at is the Belkin 125Mbps Wireless-G Router. Can anyone reccomed it?

I'd have to recommend the Netgear DG834G. It's £60 on Amazon, compared to £80 in PC World, it's small and draws no attention like a load of other tacky looking electronics. Most important of all, it's well supported by Netgear, and it's incredibly easy to set up. You plug it in to your phoneline and it will autodetect your broadband settings, which is more than I can say for most Linksys routers I've dealt with. It's reliable, and never drops a connection for me.
One thing: don't bother with anything other than a standard 802.11g wireless router. These "double the speed of wireless-G" routers use proprietary technology for which you have to buy a specific USB wireless dongle to get the extra speed, and rarely work very well, anyway. Macs' inbuilt Airport cards can't go faster than wireless-G, so why bother with anything different?

Can anyone recommend a wireless router or a router/Airport combination for our office (in UK). I've had troubles with VPN in the past so would like a router that plays nicely with Mac OS X Server VPN.
Presumably a router/Airport combo will be the the most Mac Server friendly way to go.

Well, you could give it a go, but my honest opinion, especially if you're having difficulty with VPN's is get one box to do the lot.
We have 4 sites here, each one with a Draytek router, and a LAN-LAN VPN set up on each to each. In addition we have a dial-in VPN on each, with all Macs at each location. LAN-LAN VPN is faultless, dial-in VPN is great as long as you have a good quality broadband connection.
I use Time Machine to the server (it has the advantage of being easily upgradable for storage space, unlike Time Capsule) and we all back up to that (there are some disadvantages to using TM on the server, see here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9630985#9630985) and everything works flawlessly, with the exception of the difficulties described in the above thread.
I agree to a certain extent about using Apple tech where possible, but I would say use the appropriate technologies for the environment you're working in.
Time capsule, Airport and a cable modem is pretty much perfectly designed for a home environment, but if you're working in a corporate environment, I recommend using corporate technologies.
It just strikes me that you're over-complicating things. Compare the two solutions side by side:
Your suggested business model:
Cable Modem, Airport router with VPN pass-through (which you know is unreliable), Time Capsule, OS X server with VPN
My suggested model:
Wireless modem/router with VPN, OS X Server running Time machine over the network.
The fewer points of failure you have, the better. Let OS X server deal with the Mac side of life, let the router deal with the network side of life. Their two areas of responsibility meet nicely in the middle without any crossover, using standard technologies.
Like I say, just my point of view, but I would go for simple and standard over Mac-oriented but complicated every time.

Can anyone reccomend a suitable additional internal harddrive for G4?

Hi,
I want to buy an internal hard drive for my 1.25ghz powermac G4 and have done a little research and was recommended the Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 ata 133, or the Seagate Barracuda 7200 120gb. Can anyone recommend either of these two drives?
I was also advised that some G4''s cannot use internal drives of a capacity of more than 120gb. Can anyone confirm if this is true and if so are you able to shed any light as to why this is?? Because ideally I would like to get 160gb or 250gb drive.

Connection Failed--can anyone understand Netstat routing info?

Folks:
Been chasing the problem of trying to get my two listed computers to connect by ethernet/Connect to Server with AFP and entering the IP address manually--which worked in 10.3.9. With 10.4.6 -- to 4.9 so far none of the Tiger OS are able to do that. I've rolled the AppleFile Server kext back to 4.8 and tried all the previous versions loaded onto an Ext HD &&& I finally ran AppleJack . . . and nothing, NADA, Nichts!! The two units "see" each other and log in window opens with my correct user name and I enter the password --the spinning beachball and then "Connection failed" or "Log iN failed" --"check the IP address and try again" but I'm looking at the DHCP generated number in the other computer . . . .
Saw That Phil Smith.com gave suggestion that perhaps this is a routing table?? problem and to run Netstat--so I ran it in my Tiger based iBook with the "Display routing table info" button checked--but I don't know what any of it might mean. Any ideas?

Back at the ranchito--plugged the two units together by ethernet port and then ran "ifconfig -a" and will post the results from both machines below. In this example using panther I would have entered 169.254.219.28 into ConnectServer window of my iBook; I'm looking at that number in the iMac in Network/Built-in ENet/configure--Using DHCP/IP address (the #) and under that it says "provided by DHCP server" click "connect" I get a window that shows my user name, enter password. Before, I'd be INNNNN--now I get FAILLLLLLL.

Would be same as any other object. The problem with selecting a sheer fabric is that it will also take with it any thing showing through. No there is no cure for that.

Can anyone recommend a car charger and FM transmitter for my iphone 4s?

I recently purchased one from eBay but it didn't charge my iPhone 4s - it said - charging is not supported with this accessory.

My only other slight problem is that my cigarette lighter is behind the handbrake so I need one that has a lead coming out of it rather have one that that is directly attatched to the cigarette lighter if you know what I mean!!!

I was considering the same thing. And, although I don't have a suggested product for you, I do have a suggestion... I'm not going to buy a charger / FM Transmitter becasue it will cost me the better part of $100 and it will still not sound very good. Instead, I'm saving up for a new head unit for my car that will support my iPhone via USB, allow me to connect to my car stereo via bluetooth for calls, and allow me to control my music via the head unit instead of the phone. A little more cost but for much greater functionality.

I have a new router and computer. I have just remembered that just before my old PC died on me, I transferred my iTunes library to a hard drive. I can't remember exactly just how I got my library back, but there are definately things in my library now that were in my library on my old PC! Hope this makes sense. What do you mean by same location? Do you mean in the same place in the house?

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

It can come about without any change done by the user, and it's not just from other networks. The placement of the router can also affect performance. Also make sure router is up to date.
Apart from that would be the reboots.

Well, I think the proper characterization would be that the design is based on a loose interpretation of RegEx. For instance, the asterisk "*" is typically used as the directive for zero or more occurrences of the preceding character. In the UCM dial plan, the * is a valid digit and someone decided to avoid the nastiness of escaping asterisk every time it is needed. On a related point, in standard regex build the "?" is used for a 0 or 1 match. In UCM, the "?" is 0 or more (so, it is like the asterisk in that way).
That said, I get your point. Someone says "hey, we need wild cards" and the likely place to start pulling examples is RegEx.

try changing the router's MTU for wired and change the advanced wireless settings on the router as well.

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.

Connected everything on my new (previous gen...not the new tower, mind you) TC, but can't get beyond flashing yellow. Had to reconnect my old router to send out the "HELP!" request. Can anyone advise, please?

If you pulled out an existing router.. then you have a modem.. what modem is that? Explicit details help loads.. and loads.. and even more loads.. we cannot guess solutions without knowing the setup.
But you can simply configure the TC in bridge mode.. do it directly connected to the TC with ethernet wire.. LAN TC to computer and configure it in bridge.
Then setup wireless any way you want..
You can turn it off and still use the wireless on the old router.
You can setup a new wireless network.. and connect to that.
Or you can setup roaming network, ie use the same wireless name and same security settings and password as the existing router.. assuming it also has wireless.
Do nothing at all and it will still work..
