Can anyone recomend the right ext FW hard drive enclosures

Hi
i have to remove 5 drives from a dead G4 tower and i want to get a G5, so i need a external encloser and a silent one for recording.
Is there some solution for this or a work around, i cant record with fan noise and i like to work in front of the mac.

If you can get them, I would recommend the LaCie cases. I have four of them and they are very quiet because they have no fans. The are very well made and use the aluminium case to desipate heat. I purchased two 300Gb models with FW800, FW400 and USB 2.0 connectors and found two other cases online that I put a 250Gb and a 120Gb drive that I had into them.
Great cases, good luck.

Can anyone boot Leopard from an external hard drive on a G5 iMac PowerPC? How?

Allan's answer is irrelevant as he refers to Snow Leopard. He must have isread your post!
Yes, you can and I do. The proviso is that the external hard drive is connected by firewire, as a PPC Mac cannot boot via USB.

  • Can anyone recommend software to scan iMac hard drive for errors

    Hello Apple Community
Can anyone recommend software to scan iMac hard drive for errors/defects/corruption?
I've been having problems with hard drive for months and it finally froze on me so I reformatted and restored from Time Machine.
Everything is fine now but I just have a feeling I will see the same problems occur because I simply restored to the exact moment from where I was having problems (i.e. Finder crashing/permissions issues/Volumes unmounting/Trash not working/Random error messages/Computer crashing when opening or saving PNG).
I read that sometime Disk Utility doesn't always pick up on a defect or corrupt hard drive.  The whole time I was having problems Disk Utility said HD was ok.
Is there software that can do a better job of scanning hard drive for errors and let me know if I need to get HD replaced?
    Thanks
    Brad

I agree with both.  Most important though is you backup your data frequently*:

That way if a problem should arise, and it is a result of the hard drive actually dying, you won't accidently kill the hard drive in the process of trying to detect errors.

Try assigning Queen as the Album Artist on the compilations in iTunes on your computer.

  • Can I delete the songs off my hard drive?

I have an 80 gb iPod, but no where near that amount of space on my hard drive. I was wondering if I needed to keep the songs on my hard drive to keep them in my iTunes and iPod, or is it possible to delete them and still have them available. I'm almost positive this isn't the case, but I figured I'd ask someone else.

Follow the instructions in this article; you can then delete songs from your computer without them being deleted from the iPod automatically. If you do this, you should keep another copy of the songs, as they can easily be lost if they are only on the iPod.

  • Can I combine the contents of 2 hard drives in to 1 drive?

I have a new 1TB hard drive that came with applications pre installed. I'd like keep its contents and add the contents from my recent Time Machine backup. Some of the applications are redundant but that's OK with me. I just don't want to lose the contents on either hard drive. My initial hard drive is 256GB and has Mavericks, MS Office 2011, iTunes library and a buch of other apps and files and photos. The new drive is 1TB and is pre loaded with a buch of cool apps. Some are dupes like MS Office 2011 and the typical Macbook apps, iTunes etc. but I want to add the contents from my 256GB drive to the contents of my 1TB drive without losing anything. Do I used "Install from backup disk" in Time Machine?
I backed up the 256GB drive and installed the 1TB drive just waiting to hear how to move the contents ove without wiping the contents of the 1TB out.
    Thanks!

I went old school and copied apps, documents and photos from the old drive to the new one.

  • I have 2 macs and 2 PC laptops in my home wireless network.  Can I use the Airport/Time Capsule hard drive to back up all 4 machines?  I know that I will have to use different back up software on the PCs, but is it possible over the wireless network?

I have 2 macs and 2 PC (Windows 7) laptops in my home wireless network. (The iMac is hardwired via ethernet to the Airport/Time Capsule; the others are wireless connections using Airport).  I want to use the hard disk drive in the Time Capsule as a network backup drive for all 4 computers.  Is this possible?  Could someone help me by telling me how to configure it?  I know I will have to use different backup software in the 2 Windows 7 Laptops?  Do I need to use the Windows backup software, or can I use a third party program like Acronis True Image?  Thanks in advance for the help

It is your fault, pondini.. all your fault.
I read of all the things that go wrong restoring Time Machine backups.. particularly stupid things like mail, photo libraries don't go back.. etc. And looking through the incredible number of issues people have here, when their Mac finally takes a dive how hard it is to restore.
I restored a test hard disk from a TC.. and it takes ages and ages to even make up its mind to start.
I worked in computer support for ages, but not Macs.. so my experience is ghost.. ghost images.. on large commercial server setups, can stream restore to multiple computers at once.. even doing it computer by computer the image is simple as network boot to restore. But ghost went the way of Symantec.. sigh!! And was destroyed.
A product like clonezilla, Free linux boot cd.
    http://lifehacker.com/5078397/clonezilla-backs-up-and-restores-your-disks
Can backup a Hard disk in just about any format.. yet to try it on a Mac to a TC.. but I will. Boot from CD.. instead of your lost Lion partition which no longer exists (because the hard drive had to be replaced) and the DVD they no longer give you, and restore the entire hard disk in a couple of hours .. to the exact image at the point you made the clone.. in any format, with any partitions.
My bet is that it will kill TM .. but you could be right.
It is just the prospect of all those permission changes, photos and mail libraries etc that worry me.

  • How can I compress the audiofiles on my hard drive as it is full.

I have just bought a Classic and have been busy converting my audiofiles to AAC files to sync to my iPOD. However, my hard drive is now full but I am under the impression that if I copy any files back to my external hard drive I will lose them when I sync with my iPOD.
Is there any software I can use to compress the file size of the audiofiles I am storing in MY MUSIC within MY DOCUMENTS. My iPOd indicates that I have used 11.85 gig out of a possible 80 gig but my PC indicates that the hard drive is full with 38.5 gig taken up out ofa possible 40 gigs. I have no other significant files on my PC.
I am sure this is common problem. Please help
    Thanks
    bennyboy1965

A 40GB drive is only going to have ~37.5GB, not 40GB or 38.5GB.
If your 40GB HD has 38.5 GB used, you better (quickly) delete some files as Windows needs room on the boot drive to function properly.
Generally, you should have at least 10%-15% free space on the boot drive.
have been busy converting my audiofiles to AAC files
Are you deleting the original after you convert them?
What are you converting them from? iTunes and the iPod can play WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC and Apple Lossless so if they are alreay in one of these formats, you do not need to convert them.
As Meg noted an external HD is probably your best option.
You can use it to store all your music and also make a backup (very important) of your internal 40GB drive.
You can get 250GB external drives for $50-$100.

  • Can I use the time capsule internal hard drive for file storage?

Can I configure the Time Capsule internal HD to function as a network file server as well as handling time machine backups?
Can the internal HD be partitioned?

This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
    5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html

  • Can anyone help me repair my internal hard drive?

I think I may have shut down my Imac at a bad moment (using the button on the back) and created a problem with the internal hard drive directory. I connected my powerbook to the Imac, using it as an external drive and ran 'Disk Utility' on it. I got:
    'Invalid node structure
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree
Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit.
    1 HFS Volume checked
1 Volume could not be reapired because of an error.'
So I then used a (slightly old) copy of Diskwarrior 3.0. I pressed 'Rebuild' and it came up with:
'The directory of the disk 'Robsters Imac' cannot be rebuilt. The original directory is too severely damaged. The disk was not modified (2155,2179)'
I know it looks bad, and the first thing some might say is 'get a new harddrive/ computer', but it seems strange that one bad force quit and a slightly damaged directory means the drive is now garbage. Any ideas on any other course of action?

The problem is your version of Disk Warrior is too old to work. You must use version 10.0.3 of Disk Warrior version with OS 10.4. Earlier versions will not work and will give you an error message if you try to use them. The earlier versions don't damage anything, they just can't repair the directory as you have found out.
It is a free download. You will have to have your current copy and a CD burner to use the new version. There is an excellent chance that with the latest version of Disk Warrior you will be able to repair the directory.

  • Anyone use the backup to external hard drive working on Itunes

if so, does it kinda work like the backup to disk where you can basically just load it up on a new computer and it basically looks like it did when you left it?
or is it basically like copying your whole music folder over to an external hard drive and adding everything manually?

Yes, it works in my case

  • Can anyone suggest best 500 GB external hard drive for MAC PRO?

Genius Bar rep told me to back up hard drive before delving into whirring tower... Any suggestions for a 500 GB automatic external hard drive? I've researched several, but they all seem to have drawbacks. Reliability and a quiet fan are priorities. Thanks.

Thanks so much for sharing that. Just talked to Apple support .... MAC PRO apparently has 4 slots for drives, and they would be covered under the Apple Protection Plan. With Leopard, they could be set to back up automatically. Thx again!

    Hey Seth,
Go under the apple and click on about this mac. Click on More Info...Under Hardware, Click on ATA, and then click on the options on the right. You can see what type of disc drive you have and the size and availability of your hard drive.

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.
