Can anyone recommend a brand of external firewire drive suitable for FCP?

Can anyone recommend a brand of external firewire drive suitable for FCP?
I have a mac book pro with the latest OS.
I have been told by Ken Stone that LaCie is no good and western digital is also no good.
I am in Australia and would like not to spend over $500 for a 1TB 7200 rpm drive.

'No good' is a matter of opinion and your expectations. I know people who use WD drives, and I myself have used Lacie ones with no problems. That said there are a lot of people who wouldn't. If you want quality (speed and reliability) you have to pay for it. If you're willing to compromise then you pays your money and takes your chances.
If you go for Lacie or WD then make sure you're getting 7200rpm drives that connect via FW or eSATA.
If you want a recommended solution then most popular seem to be G-Tech, Caldigit or Wiebetech. I have no idea of their availability or pricing in your neck of the woods.

The Griffin Survivor is a military-grade case that I use. It's $40 and I purchased it at Best Buy. It has a rubber piece that covers the charging port, but can be easily removed for charging while still in the case. The only downside of the case is because of the added girth, it makes the iPod unusable with iHomes or other docks unless you take it out of the case.

  • Can anyone boot Leopard from an external hard drive on  an iMacPPC?

Can anyone boot Leopard from an external hard drive on a G5 iMac PowerPC? How?

Allan's answer is irrelevant as he refers to Snow Leopard. He must have isread your post!
Yes, you can and I do. The proviso is that the external hard drive is connected by firewire, as a PPC Mac cannot boot via USB.

Can anyone recommend a portable USB 3.0 drive with hardware encryption, compatible with OSX Mountain Lion and Windows 7.  I need it for my MacBook Pro 13”, 2012, running Mountain Lion & Windows 7 Ultimate - BootCamp.  I’ve heard that the Buffalo MiniStation Encryption does not work with OSX, is that true..?  I'd like it to work with both operating systems, using the built in hardware encryption.  Thanks

  • Can anyone recommend software to scan iMac hard drive for errors

    Hello Apple Community
Can anyone recommend software to scan iMac hard drive for errors/defects/corruption?
I've been having problems with hard drive for months and it finally froze on me so I reformatted and restored from Time Machine.
Everything is fine now but I just have a feeling I will see the same problems occur because I simply restored to the exact moment from where I was having problems (i.e. Finder crashing/permissions issues/Volumes unmounting/Trash not working/Random error messages/Computer crashing when opening or saving PNG).
I read that sometime Disk Utility doesn't always pick up on a defect or corrupt hard drive.  The whole time I was having problems Disk Utility said HD was ok.
Is there software that can do a better job of scanning hard drive for errors and let me know if I need to get HD replaced?
    Thanks
    Brad

I agree with both.  Most important though is you backup your data frequently*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
That way if a problem should arise, and it is a result of the hard drive actually dying, you won't accidently kill the hard drive in the process of trying to detect errors.

  • Can anyone recommend a good, cheap external CD/DVD burner?

I have a PowerBook G4 without CD/DVD writing capabilities, so I would like to get an external drive. Can anyone recommend one that is compatitible, reliable, and CHEAP? Thanks!

The only ones I'd recommend are the ones by http://www.macsales.com/ They are the ones that are known to be Mac OS X compatible. Others may be compatible with the added http://www.patchburn.de/ or firmware updates which are noted on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/

  • Dual Layer DVD+R discs - can anyone recommend a brand?

Given the price of writable dual layered DVDs, I don't want to waste my money. Can anyone tell me which brands are compatible with my iMac's Matshita superdrive?

sounds like you may have same model imac g5 as machine i bought for my daughter in august '05. it is an imac g5 ambient light 17” 2.0 ghz machine.
    model # M9844LL/A. runs os 10.4.3.
do you have same model? even if not same model can you tell me what media you are using. can you use double sided DVD media? if so, what is the designation and what brand have you found best. same question for single sided media.
most folks find good results with verbatim media for mac - that is brand mac has shipped with new machines for some time now.
    thanks - joe

  • Can't burn any DVDs on external firewire drive

Since I installed OS 10.4.9, neither DVDSP or toast titanium will recognize a "stable connection" to my external firewire lacie recorder... the message I get from toast is:
    1. Interface Error: -50
    The connection is not stable
    2. The drive reported an error:
    SENSE KEY = Illegal request
    SENSE CODE = 0x30, 0x50
    CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM, INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
And I've been using the same media for years, without a problem.
But if I connect this device to another laptop or desktop, it'll work fine.
It still can burn CDs, and read every format. But just can't burn DVDs.
DVDSP gives me the same problem. I can use my internal burner but it's slower than using my external drive.
    Ideas?
    Thanks.

That's the first time I've heard about ldm, but its readme https://github.com/LemonBoy/ldm says it only automounts stuff, nothing about rw support for every existing filesystem.

  • Can I use my Pismo's external Firewire as backup for my iBook?

    Hi,
How can I use my Pismo's Seagate 300Gig external Firewire HD to back up my iBook without destroying all of my Pismo data? My Pismo's internal HD is only 10Gig and my iBook's internal HD is 20Gig.
My external has 2 partitions (10 Gigs of which are a cloned mirror of my Pismo's 10Gig HD and the rest are allocated for disc images of all my lectures). Can it be done without destroying all the data backed up and stored/filed on the external?
A Little Fish in the BigMac Pond

    Little Fish,
Just out of curiosity, one of my three partitions on my HD has OS 9.2.2 plus applications, etc. I started up Carbon Copy Cloner on my 10.4.7 partition and cloned my 10.4.7 over to the 9.2.2 partition. None of the existing files was disturbed on the 9.2.2 partition plus the root level (that's what you see when clicking open the HD icon) of the partition was organized just as if both 9.x and 10.x had always been there.
However, this was a one-time CCC. If you are concerned about not disturbing the disk images already on the large partition and you still want to backup the iBook, you might instead use CCC's option to Create a Disk Image on Target. To restore, you would boot to the other partition, mount the disk image file and restore to the target. I have NOT tried this approach so I have no comment on it.
I would say this...if your stored image files are very important, you must take all precautions and avoid risking the integrity of that partition. I would thus not be copying over a working OSX; a disk image is probably safer but if that partition with your disk images is corrupted, do you have another backup? I may be overly cautious but I just want to make sure you know the potential pitfalls.

  • Can anyone recommend a good 802.11n card/usb adaptor for a Windows PC?

I'm about to buy a new iMac and an Airport Extreme Base Station, and I would like my wife's Windows XP PC to be able to take advantage of 802.11n, as the base station will be in the living room and our office room (where the new iMac and the PC live) gets a terrible reception with 802.11g (thick interior walls being the main problem).
I've had a look online at various USB/PCI products, but can any of you recommend one that works particularly well with the Airport Extreme?
Perhaps the Airport Express would be the best solution, as my wife's PC has an ethernet card, plus we also have a USB printer in the office that we'd like to share over the whole house?

I would agree with that, go SATA if you're an island. That's what the majority of my system is set up with.
However, I also have a DSR-11 connected via firewire, and I get firewire drives shipped to me by clients, so I need an additional firewire bus. I bought the cheapest fw400 card I could find, and haven't had any issues yet. I think I spent $35 at CompUSA.
Are there issues that would make me want to buy a better card?

  • Can anyone suggest best 500 GB external hard drive for MAC PRO?

Genius Bar rep told me to back up hard drive before delving into whirring tower... Any suggestions for a 500 GB automatic external hard drive? I've researched several, but they all seem to have drawbacks. Reliability and a quiet fan are priorities. Thanks.

Thanks so much for sharing that. Just talked to Apple support .... MAC PRO apparently has 4 slots for drives, and they would be covered under the Apple Protection Plan. With Leopard, they could be set to back up automatically. Thx again!

  • How can I transfer files off an external hard drive formatted for windows?

I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc.  The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows.  My mac will open it, but it is "read only."  I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).
However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first.  Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!
Any suggestions would be appreciated!  Heads up though, I am not especially computer literate, and my pc needs to stay intact as the husband needs it and some of the programs on it for school.  Also, I have a second external hard drive that is brand new with nothing on it, if that will come in handy.
    Thanks!

Format the extra HDD to EXFAT as previously indicated.  There are two ways that can use to transferr the data.
    1.  Connect both drives to the PC and the copy the files to the newly formatted (EXFAT) drive from the HDD with the data .  Then connect the EXFAT drive to the MBP and transfer the data to same.
    2.  Connect both drives to the MBP and open DISK UTILITY>RESTORE.  Drag the drive with the data on it to the 'Source' field.  Drag the EXFAT drive to the 'Destination' field.  Click on the 'Restore' butt is on.  After the transfer has been completed, close DISK UTILITY and place the data on the MBP where you want it.
    Ciao.

  • I have a late 2013 27" iMac, can anyone recommend a really good external blu-ray player?

    Hi,
I recently purchased a stock late 2013 27" iMac and I'm looking to purchase a really good external blu-ray player. I would prefer a Samsung USB 3.0.
    Thanks!

There are many solutions for watching BLU-RAY MOVIES on MAcs.
One is to download Bluray for Mac ... with a blueray player, this little player plays most bluerays perfectly.
You can download a trial for free here: http://www.macblurayplayer.com/
Second, You can get a program called MAKEMKV and use it in combination with VLC PLAYER to convert BLU-Ray to MKV format or STREAM from LOCAL NETWORK FAST to watch Blue Ray Free!!!!
    GET MAKE MKV here: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/34693/makemkv
And VLC PLAYER HERE: http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-2139_4-10210434.html?tag=mncol;tx t
There are videos on YOU TUBE to show you how to use MAKEMKV and VLC together.
Also, I just purchased a SAMSUNG Ext. SLIM Bluray writer for under $100 that works great for playing and burning Bluray Disc!
    Good Luck

I think I have an untitled event with about 300 pics that look familiar and are also in other events?

Ok sorry I meant that I know I have a lot if duplicates but most are not showing up, it gives me a photo of my daughter sitting on the couch and one of her standing in front of the couch as duplicated, why is that?
Also do you know a way to confirm that the photos it shows as duplicates are really duplicates and that I really have those two photos in my library and nit just one in events and say another in an album? Thanks
