Can anyone recommend a good instruction book for intermediate Mac users?

I have been using Mac for 3 years now so am not a total beginner, but still need help in many areas of OS X use. These forums are brilliant and thanks to the willing help from more expert members I have learnt a lot ( thank you), however there are times when just having a book open in front of you is the easiest way to get to grips with something. Can anyone recommend a good user manual for people like me who don't need a real beginners guide but also don't want a mind numbing, in depth, advanced text. I already have Maria Langers Visual Quickstart Guide which is useful but is exactly what it says, a quick start, and David Pogues Missing Manual which I find a little frustrating as he seems to fall short of explaining exactly how to do something after he says it can be done!
I guess what I am really after is a clearly written book that is good for beginners and more advanced users alike, with screen shots to show you what you should be doing.
Grateful for any suggestions.
macbook white 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   512mb ram and 60gig hard drive,

Hi again,
Many thanks for the feedback and the star!
For troubleshooting, Dr Smoke's Troubleshooting Mac OS X eBook is invaluable. Again, I have the Panther edition. I haven't, yet, felt the need for the Tiger edition with so many of the tips available free via his FAQs.
The only drawback, of course, is that when one is in a fix and possibly unable to boot up, the e-book isn't accessible unless one has a copy on another Mac.
Have fun,
Adrian

  • Can anyone recommend a good wireless router for both Mac and PC?

Hello! I am looking to purchase a wireless router, and was told that Linksys in general (and a specific model in particular) isn't Mac-friendly. I need a nuetral router that works well with my MacBook and my Dell laptop (which I need to purchase a wireless card for). I also have a PC but I can just connect it via Ethernet cable.
    Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!
    MacBook 1,1   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

hi - Linksys wireless routers work fine with macs (i
    have one)...
perhaps the reason you heard they're not mac friendly
is because the software they give you to configure
the router only runs under wintel.... but you really
    don't need that software...
one can have total control over the setup simply by
firing up a web browser (on a machine either directly
connected to the router via ethernet or w/ a wireless
    connection) and going to http://192.168.1.1/
that'll get you talking directly to the router...
i'm actually not aware of any routers that really
don't work well w/ macs... so i think you can just
choose based on features & price...
    cheers
    p.s. Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I currently am trying to set up a linksys router. Unfortunately, I dont know what to do once i am at the router's config page to make it start working. Can you help me out? thanks.

  • Can anyone recommend a good messenger bag for a macbook air 13?

Can anyone recommend a good messenger bag for a macbook air 13"?

    I agree with Shldr,
I have a MBA 11" and a MBA 13", and use that one for my 13" Air, and the smaller version for my 11".
I have spent at least $600 chasing down the perfect bag(s). There isn't one, AFAIK. The Incase bags are my favorite.
I do prefer the older version of that bag though (a single velcro flap for the double compartment side). The new version holds a tad less. (I gave my new version to my MIL), and use the older one I have.

  • Can Anyone Recommend A Good Protective Case for an 80G ipod?

Can anyone recommend a good protective case for an 80G ipod?

The Griffin Survivor is a military-grade case that I use. It's $40 and I purchased it at Best Buy. It has a rubber piece that covers the charging port, but can be easily removed for charging while still in the case. The only downside of the case is because of the added girth, it makes the iPod unusable with iHomes or other docks unless you take it out of the case.

  • Can anyone recommend a USB print server for both Mac & Windows?

After spending at least 20 hours trying to get my Macbook to print to a Windows XP shared printer, I am giving up and going the print server route. Unfortunately there seem to be a LOT of options and some are >$100. I want to be sure to find one that works for both Mac and Windows XP. Can anyone recommend a print server based on experience?
It can be hard-wired to the network (does not need to be wireless) and only needs one USB port. Also, it does not need to be "multi-function" compatible.
    Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, Apple just started using the CUPS printing system ~4 years ago. With CUPS drivers, you can print to all the standard comm protocols, the way drivers work in Windows. But except for Brother's, NO non-postscript printer driver on OS X was written to use CUPS. Instead they are using Carbon, the OLD OS 9 legacy programming interface. In that, they get to specify exactly which protocol is supported - and that's nearly always ONLY USB.
So, we have to rely on third party CUPS drivers. See if Gutenprint supports yours:
    http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx
or else, you may need to use printfab:
    www.printfab.net
About print servers - they nearly all support "standard" protocols, which OS X (with CUPS drivers) can print to.

  • Can anyone recommend a good KVM switch for a PC/Mac pair?

I want to run my Mac and PC off of the same USB keyboard and mouse and use the same monitor. Naturally, to fix this problem I bought the first KVM switch I could find (how different could they be?) which was a Belkin variety. Worked ok right at first, but by day 2 I was having switching issues - the monitor kept switching between the two endlessly, though the USB seemed to switch ok. The Mac refused to sleep, though. I'm taking the Belkin switch back and trying something new.
Has anyone had any success with a KVM switch? If so, what flavor?
    Thanks.

Personally I love my IOGEAR USB KVMP.
I own 2, both of them are 2 port units
Best part of IOGEAR is they come with all cables & power supply.
Worst part is most models dont have Audio support, so every machine needs their own speakers.
The IOGEAR USB KVMP Miniview #GCS102U http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GCS102U that I own has ports in front for USB keyboard & USB mouse, in back are 2 USB (A/B) ports with 2 male 15pin VGA ports to connect the 2 computers, also the main monitor port has female 15pin VGA port to connect the Monitor. Cool part is you can use a DVI-VGA adapter without problems which is nice if you LCD or CRT monitor.
2 other USB ports on the back let you share other devices like Printer and Scanner. I am able share my keyboard, trackball, monitor and printer with my newer MDD Dual G4 and an Intel Celeron 2GHz PC I have that runs Linux.
My other KVMP drives 2 other older Macs, a BWG3 and a USB upgraded PM7600.
The front has a button that you push there is less than 2 second delay for monitor and no software needed.
The USB ports are all USB1.1 if I recall so the style is fairly universal if out of date.
they also have a 4port version which I might get http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GCS634U
Although I have not used one, http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=255941 I love the look of the new Belkin Flip. Apple sells them on the AppleStore for $80 and are touted for PC & Mac mini, although I dont see why i cant be used for any Mac. Its cool feature is it does offer Audio Support too and far as I know it has its cables too. I think it is USB2.0 since its a new product. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6314001/wo/0I7xL JNdSeJb3Do7Faa1XvHguGA/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3
    good luck.

  • Can anyone recommend a good external harddrive for iTunes backup?

I would like to backup my files externally. I really dont know too much about this stuff. Can anyone make a suggestion for an external harddrive? Thanks!

I have an AcomData 120GB, a Western Digital 200GB and a Fantom 250GB external HD. All are working well. LaCie is another fine brand. I usually buy the major brands by price. Expect to pay $0.50 or less per GB (my last ExHD was $90 for 250GB).
If you are very concerned about longevity, then look at the Seagates as they carry a 5-year warranty (at least on the internal laptop drive that I have purchased).

  • Can anyone recommend a good J2ME book?

    Hi folks
I'm on the look out for a good book on J2ME. I'd like to know what books you guys have bought and which ones you think is worth buying. I'm considerig purchasing Wireless Java Programming with J2ME by Yu Feng and Dr Jun Zhu. Is this a good book on J2ME or are there better ones? Thanks for your advice.

    Hi
Thanks for the good advice guys. It looks like Jonathan Knudsen's "Wireless Java: Developing with J2ME" is one of the best books around. I'll probably buy that one or this one that seems to be quite good. The book is called "J2ME In A Nutshell" by Kim Topley:

  • Can anyone recommend any good books on leaning actionscript for flash?

Can anyone recommend any good books on leaning actionscript
    for flash?
    Intermediate level
I have been using flash for about 2 years more as a hobby
than anything else, some websites etc but now I realise I am going
to need to learn more actionscripting to do what I want, I have
come to terms with the simple stuff like goto – basic
variables – load mov – enough to programme up website
    navigation.
I ideally want to learn more about the dynamic side of flash,
mostly for designing user interfaces and websites etc
I’m after a book that doesn’t get too heavy too
fast yet I’m a little past the more basic functions
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers

  • Can anyone recommend a good Mac Calendar, Contact program for the iPhone

Can anyone recommend a good Mac Calendar, Contact program for the iPhone. The one intalled is hopelessly inadequate and inefficient. 2 Main problems- The current iCal + Contacts programs do not link to each other. And there is no To Do List!
Palm and MS Outlook had those features 6 years ago! Whats up with Apple?!!

ical does have a to do list in it. either click the little pin under the calendar, or click show to do list in the view menu.
i don't know much purpose behind needing to link ical and address book (not that i'm saying it isn't important at all - you obviously have some type of need for it). but it's got to be possible somehow, because you can set ical to make a calendar of birthdays from your address book contacts (in the main preference pane for the application).
plus, i doubt there'd be another mac calendar application you'd be able to sync with your iphone, unless whoever developed it developed an iphone app to sync it with. probably wouldn't sync with your contacts/calendar apps that come with the iphone.
