Can anyone recommend a quality archiving App?

Hi,
We're wanting to archive all our backed-up dvd's which contain our family pics, home movies, work files etc.
We would like a nice little slick App that lists all files on each disk in some kind of database so we can quickly see which disk contains each file without inserting every disk & searching it.
Or can this be done within Mountain Lion?
Cheers
Wayne & Family :-)

Dvds are not an archiving solution - they can deteriorate within a few years. Some Blu-ray disks are intended for archiving (they claim for centuries!) and so are better suited - provided you can find amuseum with a blu-ray disk reader that works in 20 years.
I have started using an MCE blu-ray burner with 25Gb disks for archiving photos etc. i expect there  is software around to create a catalogue while burning disks.

  • Can anyone recommend a quality microphone for recording instruments?

    Hey,
I'm a Garageband and digital audio newbie. I understand you can connect a microphone to record in, instead of using the built-in mic. Can anyone recommend a couple different good quality mics? I want to record an acoustic guitar. Or maybe a web link that discusses how to do this?
Also, in the Garageband Help it describes as an alternative using an audio interface between the mic and the computer. Can anyone recommend something for this? Again, maybe an online article that discusses this in more detail?
I can't really find any specific information to help with this other than the vague sales and Help material.

My personal fav's for the sound quality and price point are the Apex 415 and Apex 460. Both are condenser mic's so then need phantom power, but the 460 comes with a phantom powered preamp so you should be good to go assuming you have an appropriate interface to your mac. Price on them is ~$160CDN for the 415 and ~$260CDN for the 460. The sound quality on these is stunning - rich, warm, and exceptionally detailed, especially compared to the shure SM57's. I will agree though that the SM57 is a terrific all-purpose mic (the design hasn't changed in 20 years, it's hard to argue the accepted capability of these mic's!), but I've found that it just hasn't been able to do justice to the rich sound of my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV. Last night I was practicing with my band and was testing out an Apex 415 in place of the SM57 I usually use to mic my guitar cabinet, and when I played the sound back, I commented to the drummer that it sounded really good. He was looking directly at me, listened, and after a second realized that I wasn't actually playing my guitar and was instead playing back the recording. The expression on his face was priceless..."holy $hit that sounds good, I thought you were actually playing!".

  • Can anyone recommend a reliable recording app?

I'm looking for a quality recording app to record from the Internet on my iMac.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi,
Thanks for the heads up and congratulations on making level 8.
Looking at the OP's other posts it seems he was looking to record from an external device and isn't the propose of Greatdy Audio to shunt audio from one app to another? At least that is how I read it. If so then it's not going to do anything for the OP if  he's looking to record an external device.
At least that's what I read but I just donated blood so my mind my be a bit fuzzy
    regards
    Edit
To the OP i second the recommnedation of Audacity. I have used it for years and it does a very good job.

  • Can anyone recommend e-book reader app for mac os10.8.5

    Hi
Im trying to find an app to use for e-books from public library and other free e-book resources. I am not ready to update to Mavericks which uses ibook app because I am waiting for some of the glitches ie printing, accessibility - dragon dicitate and all the  problems reported by the support community discussions.
Personally I am not happy with ios 7 changes and I am reluctant to upgrade mac notebook and desktop. So I am being very cautious to make mac os changes especially when my printer being older model may or may not work and reports of dragon dictate, ms office and all the programs that are costly to replace.
I have vision problems and he ability to read an e-book both on and off line on a large screen would open a world of possibilies. While I like audiobooks nothing replaces seeing the words on a page and reading them to myself !
So when recommending an app please let me know how well it can increase font size, differentiate colors, and bookmark pages.
The ease of scolling and pagination in an e-book is important with my handicap.
I am financially unable to invest in purchasing apps that are more then $5.00 nor am I am to buy an e-reader like an ipad or other brands.
I know I could use a pdf app but the page flow of a pdf file is not visually appealing. I also find it hard to find where I left off reading.
Thank you in advance for your help

Thanks very much. That fixed the problem.
    Best Regards

  • Can anyone recommend a quality 4G signal repeater?

I have poor service in my house and acceptable service outside. There is no high speed internet access available at my home so I can not use the network extender offered by Verizon.
I am reasonably tech savvy and could select my own, but I was hoping someone in the Verizon community could share their experience with signal repeaters to help me along.
I have been looking into a few options offered by Wilson Electronics.
It looks like their top of the line might be more than I need. I only plan to boost the Verizon signal in my area and I believe it also boosts frequencies that I won't need.
    Thanks!

The Wilson products are going to be your best choice for home 4G repeaters.  They tend to be a little more expensive than the competitors but there really aren't very many to pick from.  You could browse around  3Gstore.com to see if they have anything else to offer that fits your needs and budget.
I do highly recommend you complete the site survey steps on 3Gstore.com:

  • Can Anyone Recommend a Funds Tracker App.?

I'm looking for an app. that'll track my funds portfolio for me. These are UK based ones and are unit and investment funds. The few programms I've found are mainly US-centric and appear (at first glance) to be for stocks only not funds.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Withdrawing post.

  • Can anyone recommend good quality speakers to compliment my iMac 27"?

    Hi there.
I want some speakers that will compliment my 27" imac I just bought. I want some that are mainly stylish and have good bass response. The thing is I really looked at getting the BassJump 2, however it looks like it is more something that compliments very small speakers like the ones found in the macbook air and macbook pro's rather than being something that is designed for the iMac. It uses USB to power a small subwofer while still using the exsisting imac speakers as the treble speakers. Its not made for the imac really as it already has speakers that far succeed the air and pro's. I want something is made of wood and look nice on my desk while not taking up to much room. Basically I want a good upgrade from the current set for around £50. I am looking on ebay which is where I buy most of my stuff from and I found these...
NEW TRUST 2.0 QUBIC 30W SPEAKER SET FOR PC COMPUTER
They look nice and they would be what I go for if no futher suggestions are appropriate.
    Thanks alot guys!

While not many systems come in wood grain, I'd go for a 2.1 system instead of 2.0 if your looking for better sound and bass.
I really like my 2.1 Systems | Creative Inspires, but also check out Logitech or perhap even Klipsch and Bose if your budget allows for those.

  • Can anyone recommend an app that opens zip files?

Can anyone recommend me an app that I can use to open zip files (mainly photos) and them store them accordingly in files appertaining to content.

  • Can anyone recommend an iPhone Back-up App?

Can anyone recommend an iPhone App that allows you to back-up, copy, &/or archive your files from the native pre-installed "Notes" App (independently of  iTunes) ?
( I've found a few apps in the App Store that might work.  However, everything I've discovered (up-to-this-moment) has gotten wildly varying reviews.  In many instances people are saying that some apps used to work great, but then the developers wrote & published a so-called "update"  and the update is actually working worse than the earlier versions ).
At any rate, It would be greatly appreciated if someone could send a reply if they've had a consistently good experience with an App that allows you to execute back-ups of your "Notes" files.
Kindly share the name of the App & your basic experiences(s) with it.
*[Copying of items in the Calendar, Camera Roll, & other items would be a nice bonus functionality].

    To Daiya:
I'm NOT primarily aiming to insult you.  However, this is one of those scenarios (&/or situations) where: if you're NOT up-to-date on current aspects of the available technology, then why are you even entering the discussion?
For your further edification (& those who may "stumble" upon this discussion)...
For my own reasons & purposes, I mainly use a Windows-based PC for most of my computing.  There are several well-documented deficiencies & flaws with using iTunes to execute iPhone data backups. (Don't waste your energy trying to advise me what comprises a backup.  I hold advanced university degrees & have been BUILDING computers for years).  As a result of multiple iTunes deficiencies, there are several existing (3rd party) apps in the App Store that will allow an iPhone user to backup or transfer data from said iPhone on to other platforms (whether that platform be a PC computer, Mac computer, a virtual or "cloud" storage archive, or another mobile device).
I also work p/t in the broadcast journalism business.  So, the writing in my initial posting was very clear (for someone who already has knowledge of those existing applications to which I referred).  I was simply soliciting feedback from any persons who have already used some of those existing 3rd party apps to backup their address book, notes, camera roll, &/or other items from their iPhone.
Again, not aiming to be mean nor am I taking a pot-shot at your intellect (because I obviously do not know you from Adam or Eve).  For all I know, you could hold a JD, MBA, or PhD.  However, sometimes you have to "sit out" of some discussions if you don't possess a certain level of prowess or expertise with that specific topic.

  • Can anyone recommend a simple Notes/To Do List app

    Hello,
I am going crazy looking for a very simple To Do List / Notes app for my iPhone that does what I want it to do. I have spent hours in the Apps store and downloaded over 12 so far, and have not found the right one. Can anyone recommend one that:
-allows for unlimited lists (To Do Home; To Do Out; Grocery List; Xmas Gift List etc).
-allows you to manually SORT these lists by dragging them above or below the other items.
-allows you to enter unlimited items (or a large number of items) within each list
-allows for more than one line of text for each list item (not one line with ". . . ."after it)
-allows you to manually SORT these sublist items.
-opens directly to the page with all lists
-is attractive (even a cute, "mom" way is fine)
    -has the auto spelling corrector
I don't care about due dates, syncing with calendars or any other fancy stuff. I basically want it to do what the basic yellow Notes app does, but just with sorting capability.
    Thank you very much!
    Sarah B

If a site is sending you spam, it has nothing to do with browsing the web; they can't track you down or discover your email address or anything about you, so you don't need a proxy server. They got your email address somewhere, so if your email provider is Gmail or even Yahoo! Mail, you can block them from sending based on their domain and then you won't see anything from them. If your email provider is your ISP, they can block those for you if you call them and ask them to do it.

  • Is there a way to get the calculator from the dashboard to appear along with other programs?  Can anyone recommend a calculator which will work as a stand alone app?

AS it stands now, in order to use the calculator that comes with the Dashboard, you cannot read from a list of numbers in, lets say, word or excel. The dashboard is full screen and nothing can stand along side it. Is there a way to get the calculator from the dashboard to appear along with other programs?  Can anyone recommend a calculator which will work as a stand alone app?

there is one, just search with spotlight "Calculator".
    It works great!
    Hope this helps.

Can anyone recommended an app for excel spreadsheet. One that I can username iPad that can do the same functions as excel of desktop,or laptop ??

Thanks for the advice. Just don't want to waste money on apps trying to get the right on. Not looking to do too much, just add filters maybe create a pie chart. Will the app you mentioned give added sums at the end of the spreadsheet like it would on the windows version?

  • Can anyone recommend an app similar to idvd?

I don't know why Apple got rid of iDVD but can anyone recommend an app for burning an iMovie project to DVD?

I don't know why Apple got rid of iDVD
Apple is the largest media company in the world. They sell nothing on disk. It is to their financial advantage to have the physical possession of movies go away.  (I am not participating in this.)
can anyone recommend an app for burning an iMovie project to DVD?
    Yes, iDVD.
Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.
