Can anyone recommend a quality microphone for recording instruments?

Hey,
I'm a Garageband and digital audio newbie. I understand you can connect a microphone to record in, instead of using the built-in mic. Can anyone recommend a couple different good quality mics? I want to record an acoustic guitar. Or maybe a web link that discusses how to do this?
Also, in the Garageband Help it describes as an alternative using an audio interface between the mic and the computer. Can anyone recommend something for this? Again, maybe an online article that discusses this in more detail?
I can't really find any specific information to help with this other than the vague sales and Help material.

My personal fav's for the sound quality and price point are the Apex 415 and Apex 460. Both are condenser mic's so then need phantom power, but the 460 comes with a phantom powered preamp so you should be good to go assuming you have an appropriate interface to your mac. Price on them is ~$160CDN for the 415 and ~$260CDN for the 460. The sound quality on these is stunning - rich, warm, and exceptionally detailed, especially compared to the shure SM57's. I will agree though that the SM57 is a terrific all-purpose mic (the design hasn't changed in 20 years, it's hard to argue the accepted capability of these mic's!), but I've found that it just hasn't been able to do justice to the rich sound of my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV. Last night I was practicing with my band and was testing out an Apex 415 in place of the SM57 I usually use to mic my guitar cabinet, and when I played the sound back, I commented to the drummer that it sounded really good. He was looking directly at me, listened, and after a second realized that I wasn't actually playing my guitar and was instead playing back the recording. The expression on his face was priceless..."holy $hit that sounds good, I thought you were actually playing!".

Pair a wireless KB with the laptop and all should be well when you attach the laptop to the iMac and invoke TDM. But as Denny mentions, it does seem like the waste of a good iMac to use it in just this configuration. Why is the laptop primary?

  • Is it Possible in JSF? Can anyone recommend any java Technology for this?

I am doing Post Graduate Degree in Computer Science. This is my final semester and doing project work.
Any body having idea about my requirment, help and guide to me
My description and questions are as follows:
    Current Approach:
PHP has been used to achieve the flexibility of creating custom images on-the-fly. Using this approach we were able to create a web-interface similar to the application client, where we could display links and get the exact look and feel of the application client.
    Drawback:
This approach forces us to use two different technologies Java and PHP, since our system uses 'Java' accessing all the API's from PHP becomes a problem. while PHP provides a way to invoke any java method. It comes with a draw back, the method calls are little slow. This delay's are loading of web-page.
    Requirment:
    1. Creating custom images on various locations of the screen
    2. The Exact look and feel of the application map should be achieved
    3. Place elements and links correctly as in application-client reflect any changes
    4. Generation events on the Links and Elements
    5. Setting Backgroud images for different maps
    Questions:
    1. is it possible in JavaServer Faces (BETA)?
    2. If it is possible is JavaServer Faces(BETA) How to create custom images and create interfaces among them?
3.Can anyone recommend any java Technology for doing this?
Anybody having idea, help and guide me for doing my project

    hi,
I think you can use JSF

  • Can anyone recommend a good app for designing and printing labels?

I have just switched from pc to mac and have pages on my macbook but it does not have a label function (please apple sort this out its the only major flaw!) so can anyone recommend a good app that will do what a pc does? I do not really want to pay £85+ for office for mac just for the word program

One way to find an app at the App Store is to use keywords.
Type   print labels   in the search field top right corner of the App Store window then press Enter or Return on your keyboard.
Click one of the apps listed. Always check Requirements under Information and definitely read customer reviews before purchasing and make sure there is a support link available in case you need to contact the app developer for questions.
This forum is mainly for troubleshooting the App Store.
For feedback for software designed for printing labels, try posting your topic in the Mac OS X community here.

  • Can anyone recommend a notebook cooler for a 17" Unibody MBP?

    Hi,
I've been looking at notebook/laptop coolers for my Macbook Pro. Can anyone recommend what the best pad might be?
I've been doing quite a bit of research and see it's not entirely straightforward. For instance, the Zalman ZM-NC1500 has the grill/fans in the wrong place for my MBP - really the cooling area needs to be at the screen end, to directly cool the GPU and CPU.
Likewise quite a few of the better notebook coolers don't seem to be available in the UK, such as the Vizo Ninja 2.
Any ideas what I could go for?

I bought my MBP as a desktop replacement and it gets far hotter than my Powerbook did at peak load. I'm looking to get something to elevate the machine whist cooling the bottom of the unit.
I've seen the NZXT Cryo Lx is well reviewed and actually seems to do a good job. Can't find a UK supplier with stock though.

  • Can anyone recommend a simple example for displacementmapfilter? I just want a simple expand effect.

As the title says, can anyone recommend any simple displacementmapfilter examples?
I have a bitmap image of a sleeping animal that I would like to add a small effect to that will make it look like it is breathing. I'm guessing this should be pretty simple with displacementmapfilter - a spherical distortion tweened over time over the animal's chest.
    Any suggestions?

i don't think there's anything simple about the displacementmapfilter. i've tried to explain it before but i've never had the feeling that i was able to convey understanding.
here's the displacementmapfilter at work:  www.kglad.com, click snippets, click displacement.
    here's the source code:  www.kglad.com/Files/forums/displacementMapFilter_AS3.fla
p.s.  there's commented-out code in there that used a squeeze and bulge function during my early experiments that could probably be used by you.

  • Can anyone recommend an audio device for Garage Band?

For the past three years I used Windows and Cubase LE with my Tascam US-122 for multitrack recording. A month ago, I finally switched to MAC (so good!) and my US-122 worked pretty good with GarageBand, except for a milisecond recording latency issue that I was almost willing to live with. Also, my US-122's headphone jack no longer worked so I decided to try the newer tascam US-144 so I could use head phones and to see if it would cure my latency issue. The headphones are ok, but now I get buzzing and hissing when I play back multi-track recordings in both GB and Cubase LE. This is so annoying I haven't even tested the latency problem. I'm ready to send back my US-144 and get something that is known to work well with the MAC OS and GB and eventually Logic Express. Any recommendations?

I "second" Hangtime's recommendation for a Firewire interface. Generally, Firewire interfaces are more reliable, although they are also usually more expensive. If you are serious about recording, and plan to migrate to Logic, it may be worth it for you to spring for a Firewire interface.
You might want to check out the selection on a major retailer's site like Sweetwater Sound. Their website is www.sweetwater.com, and they have just about everything, so it's a great place to check out what's out there. Their sales reps are also pretty knowledgeable (well, some are), but if you call them, make sure they don't sell you anything you don't want!
Budget is obviously a key factor in making a decision. If what you're after is rock solid performance, I've found RME interfaces (the Fireface 800 or the smaller Fireface 400) absolutely rock solid. Apogee's Ensemble and Duet offer very good sound quality sound for the price, but are still more than twice as much as interfaces offering similar features (but not the sound quality). For interfaces at a lower price point offering great bang for the buck, I like M-Audio and Presonus.

  • Can anyone recommend good clear skins for the iPod Nano 3G?

Anyone know of any good skins for the iPod Nano 3G?
    Preferably clear skins!
P.s. the skins that cover the wheel will that cause a problem with the response of the wheel? I have just adopted the Nano for the first time my previous ipod was the Shuffle!
    Thanks in advance!

I like hard cases for my iPods and so the one I have to recommend is a clear plastic hard case made by Agent 18. I had one for my previous iPod and I never got a scratch on the actual iPod. They make awesome cases for iPods and have fast shipping (the new 3rd gen isn't available in stores yet). Plus you don't have to put a film on your screen, the case covers the screen in hard plastic so you don't ever have to worry about screen scratches- I think the films can still get scratched if you bang it up enough because they are thin. Go for Agent 18!

  • Can anyone recommend a new mouse for Ilustrator?

    Hi
I am running Creatice Cloud with Illy CS6 on Windows and I need a new mouse
I would love something that lets the wheel side scroll
    Any recommendations?
I am running a HP Probook so I can handle bluetooth
    Regards Tom

Use of a stylus is entirely a matter of personal preference and style. It is certainly not necessary and is grossly misleading to characterize it as "best," as if it's some kind of necessity.
I dare say my work qualifies as "professional" as anyone's but I personally have little to no use for a stylus in a vector drawing program. I find them awkward and tedious. If you use the very small handful of features which can take advantage of pressure-sensitivity, then obviously a stylus is advantageous for those features. That's more a matter of drawing style; certainly neither a matter of necessity nor of professionalism.
There is nothing Illustrator-specific regarding sideways scrolling. So if whatever mouse you chose provides for it by the wheel, then it will probably work in AI as it would in any other app. Just use whatever mouse you like. I like a small "notebook size" wireless optical mouse with decent resolution that works well on a desk surface without the need for a mousepad, and a model without a kazillion buttons that are too easy to inadvertently invoke. I typically buy the Microsoft branded "laptop" mouse with two buttons and a scroll wheel (not the 10-button ones), and use them for all my desktops and laptops. The scroll wheel scrolls horizontally when pressing Ctrl; zooms when pressing Alt. I use an even smaller mouse for my netbook, because it packs away well in the case.
But again, it's just personal preference.

  • Can anyone recommend a recovery software for my mac mail?

I had to recreate a new email account and in doing so I guess my older (more than 7 days) emails have all been deleted. Has anyone used receovery software for the mac?

Well, prevention is always better than cure - do you have any backup system? (And if not, I strongly recommend you set something up - Time Machine is automatic, frequent, and part of OS X; it only requires an external hard drive or Time Capsule).
Second, most email services now have IMAP functionality, meaning that all mail can be stored on the server - this reduces the chance of losing email. So check with your mail provider if you can set up IMAP and what the server settings would be.
As to your specific question, I personally have used Data Rescue successfully, but you do need to run it quickly after you lose data (the more you use the computer, the more the "deleted" filespace is written over, potentially losing files permanently). You can download a trial for free to see if your files can be recovered before you pay. You do need an additional drive to store recoveed files to.
    good luck!
    Matt

  • Can anyone recommend a new laptop for CS6

I need help choosing a notebook to run CS6 well on either Win7 or Win8.  I would also appreciate advice on how to configure it, given limitations compared to a desktop.  Thank you.

    Wayne,
I dont think I can recommend specific models for you as they're usually region-specific. What's available here may not necessarily be available where you're from.
However, key things you should look for in your specs:
Core i3/ i5/ i7 processor (higher the clock speed, better performance)
Good amount of RAM (atleast support for good amount for future upgrades) - 8GB or higher for Photoshop CS6
Hard drive - most important bit - consider getting a SSD - or, if that is not an option, look for drives with higher RPM for lower latency
If you're a designer, bigger the screen, better the experience. Or, buy an external display and hook your laptop up to that
Video card - again, most important bit - look for a 'dedicated' video card - minimum of 1Gig, I'd recommend 2GB of Video RAM
Other than that, all other standard features shouldn't really matter.
