  • Can anyone recommend software for converting mpeg files to FCP compatible files?

Currently working with FCP 10.1.3. Would like ability to re-edit / cut and slice mpeg files from other movie editing software (i-movie and studio 15). Would appreciate any recommendations for conversion software that I can download via the app store. Thanks

MMPEG Streamclip. Depends on what kind of MPEG, 1, 2, 4 and whether it's muxed or in VOB files or some other wacky concoction.

  • Can anyone recommend software to scan iMac hard drive for errors

    Hello Apple Community
Can anyone recommend software to scan iMac hard drive for errors/defects/corruption?
I've been having problems with hard drive for months and it finally froze on me so I reformatted and restored from Time Machine.
Everything is fine now but I just have a feeling I will see the same problems occur because I simply restored to the exact moment from where I was having problems (i.e. Finder crashing/permissions issues/Volumes unmounting/Trash not working/Random error messages/Computer crashing when opening or saving PNG).
I read that sometime Disk Utility doesn't always pick up on a defect or corrupt hard drive.  The whole time I was having problems Disk Utility said HD was ok.
Is there software that can do a better job of scanning hard drive for errors and let me know if I need to get HD replaced?
    Thanks
    Brad

I agree with both.  Most important though is you backup your data frequently*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
That way if a problem should arise, and it is a result of the hard drive actually dying, you won't accidently kill the hard drive in the process of trying to detect errors.

Hi, Can anyone recommended software to import dvd to iMovies. I need to import about a dozen homemade DVD's and edit them into a single DVD comprising the 'best bits'. How best can I do this. I have an external hard drive available for the job

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

They're both white -- I'll give you that.
What I was thinking of more when I said similar in design was the way that the AirPort Express simply hangs on a wall, no desk or shelf shape required, with the bare minimum of cables. By the same token, I'd like to have a small amp and/or speakers that could hang/be mounted on the wall and deliver music into the room via AirTunes -- without an octopus of cables and without having to dedicate an entire tabletop to it (audio should be heard and not seen.)
Well, that would be great, but there are way too many variations of audio equipment for people with all kinds of tastes to make for a worthwhile market. Whereas I might think it's silly to have more than a 100W stereo amp others would consider that pathetic.
If Apple could pack a 100W+ amp into something that hangs off a power outlet, more power to them. I was thinking more along the lines of 5-10W, or just enough to power some wall mounted speakers. That said, [these speakers|http://store.apple.com/us/product/TU902VC/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1NA&mco=Mjc4M jI1MQ] look somewhat promising. It looks like they could be powered off the USB on the AEX, so at least no power brick. Unfortunately, they don't look geared to wall mounting, and who knows what the audio cable connections look like (because the ad deceptively photoshopped them out of the picture.)
The Express's low power analog output, plus optical, not to mention an Ethernet port, router, bridge, a/b/g/n wireless access point and USB printer port in such a tiny package with a self-contained power supply is a such a generalist's piece of connectivity I can't imagine asking for anything more.
It is a pretty impressive package. But, I'm still asking for GigE in the next rev.

Check out this due Waleed he has some nice tuts and here's

to file upload with progress bar tutorial he has. Granted it
looks like it's just an animated gif letting users know their file

power of actionscript to achieve that result.
    Hope that helps!

  • Can anyone recommend replacements for iChat?

I have a new MacBook Pro and all of the updated software and iChat doesn't work very well. It consistently fails to connect to my friends with whom in the past it was easy to connect. It keeps saying that they have "declined" the invitation, when they have not and I know this because I'm on the phone with them trying to get the session going.
We have switched to Skype for voice communications and it seems to work fine, but does not have great audio. There also is a Yahoo chat which a small video feature, but the frame rate is very slow.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for replacing iChat with something that gives reliable service and doesn't waste people's time trying to "connect". It is so irritating to have iChat failing when Skype and Yahoo and others work perfectly on the same machine, between the same people.
Perhaps some time in the future there will be an iChat that will work reliably, but until then if anyone has suggestions for replacements, please let me know.

    <<<<<------- Click my Name.
Apple Key + Shift + 3 takes the whole Screen
Apple key + Shift + 4 takes the area you draw around with the Cross Hairs
Apple Key + Shift + 4 then hitting the Space Bar converts the Cross Hairs in to a camera cursor and takes window shots.
They are all placed on you Desktop.
Skitch is an App for doing Screen Shots as well and you can annotate then and it provides you with Web Space to send then to as well.
On the site it has the option of clicking various Buttons to get the HTML to post the pics elsewhere.
You can use a Drag button to pull the pic straight into Mail.
In Leopard Preview can Annotate Pics but you have to save them again.
Essentially the Web Pages of a Modem or Router are glorified Forms to fill in that then use software on the device to change the settings.
However not all are laid out the same way which adds to the learning curve.

  • Can anyone recommend and mouse to use with Aperture?

    Hi ,
I have been using the Apple Mighty mouse with my iMac and am looking for a replacement. I have a lot of trouble using the right click on the mouse and am fed-up with it.
I want something bluetooth that will not take up one of my USB ports. I have set the third button to expose all windows as I frequently switch between applications and I like this function with the big screen I have.
Aperture and Photoshop are my main applications so I’m looking for something that is going integrate with those well. I want to be able to zoom and scroll around pictures with ease.
    Does anyone have any recommendations?

I am using a Logitech VX Revolution, actually a wireless notebook mouse but I have small hands, so prefer the smaller size over a regular size.
Apart from the size (which is an individual feature and there is a normal sized version called MX Revolution) it should fit most of your needs. It has six buttons a four way scroll function and a zoom slider. Using the Steermouse 3rd party mouse driver (Logitech's one is known to cause problems) you can individually set all buttons and functions of the mouse systemwide and for specific applications. Speed and accuracy is more than sufficient for my needs.
Only thing is that it uses a proprietary wireless dongle, so you still lose one of your USB ports.
Microsoft also produces good mice (imho their hardware is a lot better than their software , even some with real BT support (they still come with a dongle but you don't have to use it). However, from what I've heard, sometimes it can be a little bit tricky to get them to work with Mac OS X.
    Bye,
    Carsten

  • Can anyone recommend software to connect my ipad to my windows laptop?  I want to import music, contacts, etc.

iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software unless you have an older model iPod. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • Can anyone recommend a quality microphone for recording instruments?

    Hey,
I'm a Garageband and digital audio newbie. I understand you can connect a microphone to record in, instead of using the built-in mic. Can anyone recommend a couple different good quality mics? I want to record an acoustic guitar. Or maybe a web link that discusses how to do this?
Also, in the Garageband Help it describes as an alternative using an audio interface between the mic and the computer. Can anyone recommend something for this? Again, maybe an online article that discusses this in more detail?
I can't really find any specific information to help with this other than the vague sales and Help material.

My personal fav's for the sound quality and price point are the Apex 415 and Apex 460. Both are condenser mic's so then need phantom power, but the 460 comes with a phantom powered preamp so you should be good to go assuming you have an appropriate interface to your mac. Price on them is ~$160CDN for the 415 and ~$260CDN for the 460. The sound quality on these is stunning - rich, warm, and exceptionally detailed, especially compared to the shure SM57's. I will agree though that the SM57 is a terrific all-purpose mic (the design hasn't changed in 20 years, it's hard to argue the accepted capability of these mic's!), but I've found that it just hasn't been able to do justice to the rich sound of my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV. Last night I was practicing with my band and was testing out an Apex 415 in place of the SM57 I usually use to mic my guitar cabinet, and when I played the sound back, I commented to the drummer that it sounded really good. He was looking directly at me, listened, and after a second realized that I wasn't actually playing my guitar and was instead playing back the recording. The expression on his face was priceless..."holy $hit that sounds good, I thought you were actually playing!".

  • Can anyone recommend a wireless bridge?

I would like to get one as it takes out the hassle of drivers for wireless and means I'll get better signal quality as it doesn't have to be right next to my PC.
Can anyone recommend one that works well with linux? (so using a web browser to configure the connection) and working with WPA would be a bonus.
I'm in the UK if that helps.

The iPod Touch only uses b/g wireless standards, so you can use any wireless-g router. Since Wireless-N is the next standard, you can usually get a Wireless-G at an economical price. G is an older standard and quite sturdy. Linksys would be a good choice for you since you are already using one from that company. Just swap it out with your existing router. Special note: if you do go wireless, be sure to shut off the wireless on your iPod Touch when not using it; drains the battery.
