Can anyone suggest why Dev Studio can't see the server engine

We have NW2004s/SP08 installed. The server J2EE engine runs fine and one can log into the server and succssfully deploy jar's directly to it.
We also have Dev Studio installed on a desktop and it works fine. We have our J2EE preferences set using the actual IP address of the server J2EE engine and port number 3061. (We can ping this IP address successfully.)
When we try to do a Deploy/Run from Dev Studio and monitor this attempt on the server side, we can see Dev Studio trying to connect.
But it doesn't connect. In Dev Studio, we just get a message saying "sdmhost empty or unknown".
What's missing in our config? It was set up for us by externals no longer here. Since we can successfully ping the IP of the server from the PC, and since we can see DevStudio trying to connect, it can't be a network connectivity problem.
Thanks for any suggestions as to where to look/what to do.

I am indebted to you for your kindness in taking the time to answer such a trivial question.
I assume that because the client is now asking me for the SDM password, your solution is correct. (It didn't ask me for a password before - I just got the error message.)
So I've tagged your reply for 10, even though I don't know the password so can't completely confirm yet.
I'll cycle back and confirm once I have the password.

Because ratings don't travel with the files or the playlist.
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data. If you don't have any Apple devices then see HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

Can anyone tell me what the character sting is third from the top?
This is taken from the server app < select the server < storage < then edit permissions.
I feel like this is something simple, but all of my searches have turned up nothing.

Can anyone suggest why bridge cc stopped creating previews?

I was reviewing around 5,000 photos over the weekend, and everything went fine right up until late on Sunday when bridge just stopped creating previews. It's not the end of the world, as it creates it pretty fast when I click on the photo, but it is annoying.
You can see on the screenshot below, that it's creating 100% previews for about half of this folder, and then it's created none after this. Not in this folder and not in any others either. It also won't update any previews after I've done work in Camera Raw.
I've tried purging the cache, looking for updates, and restarting the machine - none of which has helped.
Anyone else have any suggestions?
Machine: Windows 7, Dual Xeon, 64GB RAM, 160GB of space left on scratch/cache disk array - exibiting no other faults.

Some have the black border around to indicate that no preview has been created, and even when I manually click on them a preview is created and discarded. The thumbnails are not updated to reflect any editing changes either - as the nef and jpgs should actualy be the same.
I do occasionally get a message that there's no space on that drive to export thumbnails, but there's 1.6 TB free on there at the moment!

Iphoto keeps crashing...can anyone suggest why?

I have been successfully downloading photographs from my Nikon D80 to iphoto5 on my mac mini for months. (There are only around 1300 photos saved on at any one time...and I'm only trying to download 30 from the camera) Suddenly, I find that the photos start to download perfectly normally, and then iphoto crashes! I've retried, rebooted...all that good stuff, but no difference! I tried downloading them onto a different mac and they downloaded perfectly...so it's nothing to do with the camera.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try not to worry about the folders you see inside the iPhoto library folder when you look at it from the Finder. It can be disconcerting, but iPhoto has filed your photos into the structure so that it can access them when you use iPhoto. The concept of iPhoto is that you view and access your photos from within iPhoto, and let it take care of the file management.
If you have located your original iPhoto Library folder (without the _1 in the name) then this is the one you want iPhoto to open. Hold down the Option key while launching iPhoto. When you are prompted to create or choose a library, click "Choose Library." Use the next window to navigate to the iPhoto Library folder (probably Home/ Pictures/ iPhoto Library). With the iPhoto Library folder selected, click the Open button.
Does your original library then open in the same condition it was in before you created the new one? Can you see your photos in the viewing window? If so, good - you are back to where you started. Close iPhoto. Hold Option and Command while launching iPhoto. Select the first 3 options in the dialog box and let iPhoto rebuild its database. This should help with the crashing.
If your library does not look the way it did before, then you have made changes to the folders or files from the Finder. You'll have to undo those changes. The random photos and numbered folders all over the place are the way iPhoto catalogs your library. Changing them from the Finder breaks the links between your photos and the database, so that iPhoto has lost track of your photos. If you can't put things back as they were, you will have to create and populate a new library. You will lose all of your Albums, keywords, ratings, and other organizational efforts.
Post back with results, and we'll help you get your library up and running.

Since upgrading to Windows 8, Firefox locks up when I try to use it, can anyone suggest why please?

We had to download Firefox once we had installed Windows 8. Although we now have a Firefox tile on the new Windows desktop, to enable access to Firefox, whenever we click on it to go to Firefox, we get the option to select Firefox as our default browser. Whether we say Yes or No, the screen then locks up and we have to use Control, Alt and Delete to close it.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

I charged my Ipad Mini overnight and it does not turn on at all today. It is only 7 months old. I received it as a gift, so I have no receipt. Any suggestions as to what may be wrong with it?

My Magic Mouse loses its connection randomly and then re-connects later. Can anyone suggest why this happens? The batteries are fresh.

Lately my magic mouse has been losing its connection quite randomly. It usually reconnects soon after. I bought a cheap USB mouse to keep me going during these unexpected down-times. The batteries are fresh and the switch is on. I've uninstalled and re-installed the mouse in Bluetooth, but the problem recurs.

Try a PRAM reset. That usually helps bluetooth problems.

Hi there there is no icloud icon in my apple preferences. my icloud storage has run out and I need to upgrade or delete something! any help appreciated

iCloud will only show up in your prefences after you up date you system to OSX 10.7 or newer. However, you may manage your iCloud from your iPod (or any other iOS device) via Settings, iCloud settings.
I hope this works.

I have two books Photoshop CS6 Essential Skills and Adobe Classroom in a book, but call me stupid or what I still cannot understand the full proceadure to perform a "Refine edge" proceadure particulary capturing hair detail.
Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Can anyone suggest a Lightscribe system that works with the mac?

I bought a LaCie Lightscribe drive. I got it home and was excited because everything was supposed to be plug and play for the Mac. It wasn't. I installed the driver and downloaded the interface to print to the disc. Everything looked like it would work as most stuff does on a Mac --easy.
But when I got to the print dialog box -- it said it couldn't find the drivers. I re-installed, updated, tried different cords, rebooted, rebooted the drive, tried a different interface. It was frustrating because the drive recognized the DVD and tried to let me watch the video in iDVD and Toast recognized the drive.
But when I got ready to print--no drive.
Anyhow, after talking to tech support I boxed it up to send it back to LaCie. Now I am wondering if there is a lightscribe system that will work with a Mac. Anybody have any success stories?

And welcome to apple discussions. LaCie is actually one of the better S-Drives for mac in terms of an external burner (at least from reading this forum). FYI - VMware fusion only works with 10.7 and higher, Virtualbox is clunky and I think you need a compute science degree to operate it.
New virtual machine when I tried to ijnstall the trail version offers a migrate from PC or install windows from a DVD or image.......and I don't ewant to do that, I just want to run an emulator, install 2 XP 32 bit applications and be able to run them in the emulator is all. If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test: Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options. Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup. If that doesn't work, then this post will not help. If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup. If successful, keep repeating these steps. If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail. (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

I am running the latest version 10.0.5 through a Macbook Pro that has just been upgraded to 16GB Ram and a 960GB SSD which has made it as fast as ****. I upgraded because I was experiencing problems before and it was suggested that I didn't have enough Ram?
I am using a Focusrite scarlett 2i4 and an Alesis Q61 midi controller. Weirdly, just trying to put a bass line down on a track using the Alesis, the bass sound goes out of tune with the track during recording only. This is very frustrating! I surely can't be the only one experiencing this?

Time lost could be a problem, but.....
Sadly, I don't think that there are any Apple docs relating to networked storgae issues with Logic. Other than a 'school' or 'business' setup, NAS/OD/AD setups are not usual circumstances for audio.
If the issue is one of data backup & security, it may be enough to automatically backup the students local work folders to the NAS.
If the issue is one of the Users being able to work from any Mac and pick up their files from the server, you are not likely to resolve this problem, without copying the files to the Local Mac.
