If you're talking about a commercial DVD and you're in the U.S. (and a number of other countries), you presume incorrectly. Commercial DVDs are encrypted and breaking that encryption is illegal. For non-encrypted DVDs, use Handbrake.

That .itl file actually is the library -- at least the critical part of it although the library is actually many files and folders.
Try starting iTunes and immediately hold down the option key. When it asks, guide it to the .itl file.
It's really hard to say without being able to poke around your computer. Upgrading should not delete the old library, but still it happens to the very, very few which is why we make backups before updating. If the old library file is gone then so are your playlists. You can always see if the following is of any use:

Check to make sure you don't have two firewalls (i.e. a Windows firewall and one on your router).
If that's not it, you may need to dig deeper ... like temporarily changing your router's DNS to use Google's DNS or OpenDNS instead of your ISP's DNS. Or maybe open up a certain port on your router (not sure which one that would be though, sorry). Or, if your computer is connected to the internet over wi-fi, try connecting to your router (or modem) via Ethernet, I heard of that solving a problem like this (though I can't confirm if that was real). -

Download the apps on your syncing computer and then sync to the iPod. Note that you can only sync apps for the one syncing computer you use with the iPod. You can manage music and videos among different computer.

Yeah got onto that but it won't load up anything readable. It just produces a little annimation of 35mm film strip and when you click on it - nothing. All you end up doing is clicking on the X in the top right hand corner of the annimation and deleting it. Really frustrating because uploading from the iPhone is simple, but I've deleted it off that and can't get it back from the Mac to the iPone either. Seem to be trapped no matter what i do.

Save your photo attachment to your Camera Roll. Tap the attachment, then tap the "Share" button and select the camera roll or another app, e.g. DropBox, if you have it installed or whatever app you are using to transfer your data.

Help! I just realized my iTunes is not backed up. I need to find a way to back it up to the hard drive on my computer (not hard drive). I want to put it there so it backs up to my carbonite. . . .
I suppose nobody is answering this because we are puzzed. iTunes is an application. It works with library files and media files. All these things are on your computer. If they aren't there then they aren't "iTunes". So what exactly is it you are trying to back up and where is it? Are these Cloud files, or on an i-device? If so, you need to specify.
You can "back up" your iTunes files to the same hard drive (duplicate the whole iTunes folder). This may help in a minor way in case of file corruption, but loss danger is more likely from fire, theft, or drive failure which will take out the same drive holding the backup files. -

If you're trying to change the iCloud ID on your phone, you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone (if you're running iOS 7), then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.

Thanks,Yes, it will erase everything. IF you had a passcode set on your phone and if the thiefs wanted to use your phone, they would have to restore it as new, so all your data would be wiped out.
