can anyone tell me some tips to improve my pro's boot speed??

Often a 'clean install' will reduce the boot time of a MBP.  Please look at these instructions and decide if this will be right for you.  Note that user data should be backed up before exercising this option.

  • Can anyone help me with Bakcing up my MacBook Pro???

Can anyone help me with Bakcing up my MacBook Pro???

Assuming you're looking for recommendations rather than experiencing specific problems, I would advise the following:
Buy 2 external hard disks. You don't say what model of MBP you have, but I would suggest buying the fastest type of drive your MBP supports. So, instead of going for a cheap USB2 drive, I would consider FW800 or Thunderbolt if your MBP supports it. It might cost more but will be faster.
One of the drives needs to be only as big as your internal HD. (Technically, it only needs to be as big as the amount of data you want to back up but to be safe, get one that matches your HD size). This HD can be used for a Bootable Clone. I use SuperDuper from Shirt Pocket, and a Freecom 1GB FireWire 800 drive. You can try it out for free, but it's worth buying a licence because once it's licenced you can do 'smart backups' where it only needs to copy files that have changed. The free version will have to do an entire clone each time which takes longer.
The second drive you should use as a Time Machine backup. The bigger this is, the more backups you can keep, so the further back in time you can go.
The reason to have both is that they both do different things.
SuperDuper is great for doing a complete 'emergency' backup every so often (i.e. before you go away, or at the end of each week, whatever). This disk means that if your MBP is lost, stolen or the HD goes pop, you can recover pretty much the whole system immediately, because you can boot from that drive on any Intel Mac that supports your bus type and OS version. I do an SD clone every so often and keep it hidden, in case anything happens to my MBP.
Time Machine backups are NOT bootable. However, in an emergency you can do a clean install of your OS and then get everything back by migrating from your last TM backup. But the best and most common use of TM backups is simply 'turning back the clock', i.e. you deleted something you wished you hadn't, or even saved over a piece of work you didn't mean to, or installed some software that has caused problems. As long as there was a recent TM backup, you can just get the older version of that file, or revert your whole system. I carry my TM drive around with me in my laptop bag and have it sat there attached and backing up the whole time I'm working.
Well worth having both strategies in place.
As an aside, if you keep confidential files (client or personal) on your MBP and carry it around somewhere like London as I do, it's also worth considering using FileVault so if your lappy gets nicked you don't have to worry about them getting at all your info. And if you have a clone at home, in the worst instance, all you really have to worry about is just buying a new laptop and restoring it. Expensive, sure, but at least your data is safe.

Have you been trying to download from the app store? Did you get a message?
As a suggestion, you might go to an Apple store (genius bar appointment) for help. As far as I know, there should be no charge.

  • UPGRADE DUAL TO QUAD CORE PROCESSOR (MAC PRO 1,1)

    Please help

    Hi Hatter,
I have been thinking on the same lines here as Zoomayman, just upgraded the Graphic' s to the 5770 so I can use my New Mac Monitor. On your reply to 'Z' it would help if you added the link to said Thread , saves the ordinary folk like myself hours trying to find said thread.
Any chance of said link please

  • I have a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro that has lion installed when I recieved it, according to the support pages AHT is supposed to work over the internet if it wasn't installed, Mine wasn't and it doesn't work. Where can I download it from?

I Have a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro, I recieved it with OSx 7.2 lion installed, I need to us AHT (apple hardware test) according to the support page that I copy here
    Additional Information
Apple Hardware Test is included on the DVDs that are shipped with some Macintosh computers. If the copy on your hard drive becomes unavailable, use the DVDs to run Apple Hardware Test.
For Intel-based Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.4  or earlier, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Mac OS X Install Disc 1  and should be included with your computer.
For Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 to 10.6.7, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install  Disc 2 and should be included with your computer.
For some Apple computers that shipped with OS X Lion, if Apple Hardware Test cannot be found on the hard drive, an Internet-based version starts up instead.
This doesn't work as the additional information statement says it should above.  Could someone at apple give me an idea of where to get it or what the "REAL" solution is, since it doesn't work on an internet version which was confirmed today at the Genius Bar in the Apple store.
    Please help me

Thanks, while it worked on yours it doesn't work on mine, any other ideas?
Are you holding down the "d" key, all by itself, just after the system shuts down for a restart?
And how long did you hold it down?
I held mine down for about 40-50 seconds. Then I lookat at my routers WAN light and it was flickering so I let up on the d key.
If that does not work then maybe there is something wrong with your MBP. Is that the reason you want to run this test, something isn't right with your unit?

  • Can InDesign take advantage of quad core processors?

I've been having trouble importing a large excel table in InDesign CS3 on windows 7,  and found that indesign was only using 1 of the 4 cores of my processor, maxing it out and crashing because of it.  So my question is, is there a way to make CS3 use all 4 cores, or failing this, does InDesign CS6 use quad cores?
Thanks for any help on this.

I installed InDesign CS6 trial, but this problem still persists.  I import the file (about a 14000 line excel table, with formatting (this is required for what I'm doing)), but it only uses 1 core of the processor. Only 25% of what it could be using to do this.  Photoshop cs3,4,5,6 use all quad cores and flys!
Anyone know how I can get this to work please?  I'll try anything that might help.
ps I can't import without formating as I need some items to be styled so I can do a find and replace on them, to add indexing elements later.

  • How can I tell the differences between the new MacBook Pro with retina display and the old MacBook Pro with retina display by looking

I'm just wondering the differences between the new MacBook Pro with retina display which was just released in October 2013 and the old MacBook Pro with retina display.

Thank you for the reply! As you said they looked exactly the same, so I'm not able to tell the differences just by looking, right? I'm thinking to buy a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with retina display, but I'm not buying the MacBook in Apple Store, I'm buying it in other shops, how can know whether they are not selling me the old model of MacBook Pro with retina display?

  • Can anyone help with ways to find my MacBook Pro?

My apartment was robbed and they stole my MacBook Pro. Along with other things I'm out approximately $4,000 in items. Probably the only items i owned worth anything, and the landlord of the studio apartment i live in hasn't even bothered to fix my window that the person broke to come in through. I have my serial number but I don't have find my iPhone set up on the MacBook. Is there any way of tracking it down? Any suggestions would be great. I'm just guessing there's no hope.

There is no way to track it based on what you have stated.
What To Do If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if Wi-Fi is enabled on the device. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

  • Can't install Mac OS 9 onto my Macbook Pro

Hi, I got my MacBook Pro about 3 weeks ago.
I bought this game that would run either on Mac OS 9 or in OSX Classic Mode.
So I checked the forum and internet on how to use my mac in Classic environment. I tried lots of stuff, and I happened to find old OS 9 Installation disk that my father used. I tried installing it on mac, and it keeps saying 'program is not supported on this system'.
I also tried booting in CD, but it wouldn't work too.
My MacBook Pro has Mac OS X 10.4.7 (I believe it's Tiger).
Can anyone tell me how to run my MacBook on classic environment?
    thanks!

    Hi, Kathryne -
No, unfortunately partitioning the hard drive will not change anything. It is not a matter of hard drive formatting, or space. It is that the Intel processor is much different than the previous Motorola processors used, and that Apple has not included any software in OSX to interface between Classic and the Intel processor.
Previously, all G5, G4, and G3 processors could use Classic under OSX; most G4 and all G3 processors could use OS 9 as a boot OS, but no G5 processor could.
Apple announced the end of support for OS 9 several years ago, about midway in the development of the G4 models. Support for OS 9 as a bootable OS continued for a while - all G4 tower models can boot to some version of OS 9 except for those with a firewire 800 port. With the advent of the G5 models OS 9 was relegated to use as Classic only; no G5 can use OS 9 as a boot OS. The next major generational change in Macs, the switch to using Intel processors, eliminated OS 9 and Classic completely as far as Apple is concerned.
Whether or not there will continue to be 3rd party development of emulators such as SheepShaver is up to software designers other than Apple.

Instead of getting a wireless card for the Mac Pro, you might want to consider getting an 802.11ac wireless bridge device that would enable you to connect more than one device to it by Ethernet cable and to eventually take advantage of the faster 802.11ac wireless standard.

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.

I'm new to itunes and need some help.  Can anyone tell me if it is possible to download an album which has explicit songs without actually downloading the songs that are explicit?

See if there's a non-explicit version and download that?  Just download the individual songs you want, and not the others?
Honestly, your phrasing doesn't make sense.  You're asking how to download an album without downloading its tracks?
