Can Aperture really search thousands of images fast?

I have iViewMediaPro (now Expression Media) on my machine. It is painfully slow to do anything despite it's boast. At the moment I use Photo Mechanic to import, browse and sort and RAW Developer to process, then Photoshop for fine tuning. Can Aperture do all this and still be a fast searching, quick sorting database? If so I'll buy it. At the moment I have Aperture version 1.5 but on opening it really is different to my current workflow. It looks scary! For instance can I batch process? Any unbiaised opinions from pro photogs greatly appreciated.

The short answer is yes, Aperture can search thousands of images fast on strong appropriately configured Mac hardware. Actually the search functions will often run fast even on weak hardware; it is mostly edits that choke slower boxes.
Your G5 configuration was not fully specified. Most G5s will not run Aperture well (e.g. stock G5 graphics cards provide unacceptable Aperture performance), so before moving forward you should post your complete hardware spec here.
I strongly recommend that every DSLR photog with adequate computer hardware first spend $33 and work through the tutorial CD Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 1.5 (Apple Pro Training) by Orlando Luna and Ben Long (Paperback - Oct 18, 2006). Have the CD and a MacIntel (or G5 tower with advanced graphics card) with 2 GB or preferably more of RAM prior to ordering the Aperture trial so you don't waste time of the 30 day trial. Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual.
IMO a cursory examination of Aperture usually turns out to be mostly a waste of time, or leads to bad workflow habits or folks simply do not get it. Carefully working the tutorial is by far the best way to learn this new killer app category.
Good luck!
-Allen Wicks
Edit: Aperture version 2.0.1 is now out, and a new version of the Luna/Long tutorial is available for preorder: Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 2 (Apple Pro Training Series) by Ben Long, Richard Harrington, and Orlando Luna (Paperback - May 8, 2008). I have not reviewed the v2 tutorial.
IMO iViewMP was a good app for film workflows but did not keep up with DSLR's demands. Then MS buying it was its death knell as far as I am concerned.

  • Can aperture be used with IR images?

Can Aperture be used to adjust the red, green & blue channels in an infra-red captured (via IR replacement sensor) image?

What kind of processing do you want to do?
If the IR-image is encoded as a false-colour RGB image, then Aperture can open it and you can use all effects and brushes on this image; only Aperture does not provide any special operations for IR images, like classification or computing the vegetation index or something similar.
You could try to adjust the the three channnels using the "Curves" adjustment for basic corrections.

  • Can I search for multiple images simultaneously in Aperture?

Can I search for multiple images simultaneously in Aperture?  For example, search for 'Image2.jpg, Image3.jpg, Image5.jpg' by image name, out of different folders?

dusan -- your best procedure is likely to be to type the first file name (without extension) in the search field of the Photos View, and then mark that file either with a Flag or a color label.  (You might clear all Flags prior.)  If you have a lot of images or a slow computer (or both ) you may have to wait a few seconds.  Aperture will show "Loading ... " on the left side of the tool strip while it churns through your images.
Then hit backspace twice, and type "60".  Mark the file found.
    Repeat with variations.
Then go to Flagged view, or filter the whole Photos view for the color-label you used.

  • When searching for an image in Finder on iMac, I found hundreds of images of printers !! All sorts of printer images which I certainly haven't loaded on.I went to Finder, File, Find and Image and there they are, hundreds,if not low thousands of them.

I was searching for an image on my Imac and when I went to Finder,File,Find and then Image, I found hundreds if not early thousand images of printers ! Amazing in one way but I didn't put them on my machine and don't really want them there.Did they come pre-loaded? Can I delete them safely? Thanks

Almost certainly, no absolutely not once you start deleting stuff like this that you think is not needed, eventually you'll trash something essential and cause yourself a lot of heartache.
There are numerous files classed as images, some will be temporary files in browser caches, others system files, others your "real" images, others files which are not really images but appear to be.
The amount of space of what I presume are essentially icons of printers will will be minimal, lets say these images are  5k in size (I guess they are much smaller?) and there are 1,000 of them, thats only 5Mb. No doubt your disk has multiple gigabytes free, eg thousands of times as much free as you'd save by deleting all of them. So you might gain back an extra 0.0001% disk space*. NOt worth the time, let alone the risk, plus then you'll get into a mindset "hmm, I dont think I can possibly need this 23byte file either I'll delete that as well etc, and then "problem......".
Where are the images stored? It may be that at some time you were searching for a new printer and these images are from that exercise (though I doubt you looked at thousands?) in which case they are in your browser cache and you can always delete that through the browser, but that space will be overwritten by other images anyway.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a motto to work by with computers.
*( or, if you really do need the (say) 5MB of disk space back because you are running out, this would only be a very temporary solution and that wont have done you any good)

I never tried importing from the iPhoto library as referenced images. I wonder if Aperture can access images stored in an iPhoto library package?  Even if it would work, it sounds like a bad thing to do.
You might consider starting over and this time have Aperture manage the images.  That will copy them to the Aperture library, leaving the iPhoto library untouched. This assumes you have sufficient space to make a complete copy of all the images in your iPhoto library plus another copy of each image that Aperture makes as the preview image. You can then back up your iPhoto library (two backup copies, just to be sure) then remove it from your hard drive when you start getting too low on space.  As I write this I don't know where your iPhoto or Aperture libraries are/will be located so I'm assuming you have them on your HD.

  • Can Aperture lay one image on top of another?

Remember the days of sandwiching two negatives and printing them as one image?
OK, most of you who can answer me were not born then. But that's what I want to do with two files—can Aperture do this for me?
    Thanks,
    Ben

    Unfortunately, no.
You will need a program that can composite (typically with layers and transparency capabilities) so one image can show through another to varying degrees.
The most expensive option is Photoshop full version ($700) and the least would be Gimp (which is free).
Note - there are many other programs between the above price range including Photoshop Elements which will easily do the trick and more.
Editing this one to add that Pixelmator looks like a promising app and is available as a trial at their site:
    http://www.pixelmator.com/
They also have a sneak peak of Pixelmator 2 which a new purchaser can purchase the current version from the Mac App Store for $29 and will receive Pixelmator 2 as a free upgrade when released.
    http://www.pixelmator.com/sneak-preview/
I would suggest giving this one a try before looking at Photoshop or Gimp.

The main point is that Aperture is used to make digital negatives as good as they can be (for the uses you define), but it does not ADD date to your digital negatives, nor does it produce NEW combination files.  For those tasks you need a Graphics program.

  • Best structure for thousands of images?

I’ve just purchased Aperture (2) and I’m trying to figure out the best way to use it for my needs.
I plan to start scanning many slides (thousands) shot by my father that are well documented (who, when, where) going back to the late 1940s in chronological order.
I’ve been reading through the documentation and playing with folders, albums, and projects. I can’t figure out what scheme to use. (The options are clear, but when I start trying to manipulate the images I feel like I may not have thought it through in the best way.)
I currently have about a thousand images on my hard drive. They are in folders labeled the year they were shot. If there are specific events during that years I’ve put them in subfolders.
I’ve tried using this scheme in Aperture and have about fifteen projects (1979, 1980, 1981, etc.), each with its images in several albums.
It feels like I may be going down a road and have to redo everything when I get to a fork I’m not currently considering.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Apologies in advance, my intent is not to demean any specific workflow or offend anyone. I have been building databases for decades and I may be a bit database-centric. Some observations:
    • The DAM book was written before DSLR capture. It is Photoshop/film scan centric and far predated Aperture/LR workflows. Although conceptually useful IMO it can also lead folks away from best modern DSLR capture workflow practice.
    • There actually is a right and wrong in date naming conventions in our digital world. The way computers work is with time identified as a string from longer to shorter yearmonthdayhourminutesecond. In our digital age folks will do well to set their shop naming conventions similarly. The other thing that happens digitally is that unique identifiers are often important.
Over time approximating the yearmonthdayhourminutesecond protocol will help in digital manipulations. Note that 20080309 is unique, and sorts after 20080307 and before 20080401 in every list on any computer (or the reverse depending on how the sort is specified). No slashes or hyphens are in the string to confuse the more simple-minded computers or take up space when field length is limited. And even we simple-minded humans can read the string once we know how and why.
    • Obviously every individual is entitled to create his/her own workflow conventions, but... These are computers - take advantage of them! Any database (e.g. Aperture) can search many tens of thousands of images in seconds. Creating complex folder setups was necessary with film, and of course we all need to maintain our film archives. But all images being moved into Aperture are digital and it makes sense to plan digital workflows.
E.g. as long as each image is dated, date-based folders are redundant. Create complex folder schema if you like, but be aware that every pic taken for decades can be digitally searched in as many different ways as you have the creativity to think of. IMO too much folder-thinking can be stifling to ideal database usage.

  • Read large images fast?

    Hello all,
I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this but here goes. I am working on creating an image viewer application and so far its going great. But i've noticed one problem when reading large images typically over 1 megabyte in size. These images using <tt> ImageIO.read() </tt> takes anywhere from 1 to two seconds to finish loading. I've searched all over the web for faster methods of reading large images but I haven't had any luck. Here is an example of what code i'm using to read an image.
    try {
BufferedImage b = ImageIO.read(someLargeImageFile); // this is slow for images over 1MB in size.
    } catch(Exception err) {
}So my question is does anyone have any tips or tricks I could use to read large images faster. I see programs like iPhoto reading images up to 5MB in size in under one second. Just wondering what I could do to read these kind of images just as fast.
Thank you for your help :)

What version of the JVM are you using? How much RAM is available? What OS are you running? What kind of storage are the images on? How many other users and how many other processes are fighting over that storage?
And if the JVM is recent and has a lot of RAM available, and you have eliminated any storage bottlenecks, have you tried Java Advanced Imaging?
    http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/desktop/media/jai/
I've used it to process image files in the hundreds of MB size range, and while I don't have any benchmarks handy I'd be surprised if those files were processed much if any slower than the processing speed you're getting with your much smaller files.I'm using the most current JVM, lots of RAM is available the application i'm developing can use up to 1.5 GB of RAM on the current machine. I'm using Mac OS 10.6 but the problem occurs on all operating systems i've tested it on including, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, and Linux. I develop the software on an iMac which I just recently reformatted to factory settings so there are little to no other processes fighting over that storage.
I've heard of JAI and just really never gave it a second thought cause I never really needed any more features then ImageIO gave me. However does Java Advanced Imaging read images in a different way then ImageIO would? I'm beginning to think that it isn't so much the actual size of the file but the dimensions. Even small files in the 100kilobyte range load slow because there dimensions are large for example 3000x3000. Though i'm assuming those 100 megabyte images you processed with speed also had large dimensions?
Now for a moment I was thinking it was something in the BufferedImage class that was taking a long time to process and not the ImageIO class. However the following proves that wrong.
    try {
         ImageIO.read(someLargeImageFile);
    } catch(Exception err) {
}The above code doesn't even use a buffered image so I guess its down to something in the ImageIO class. I'll see if I have better luck with JAI but can someone explain why this might be faster then using ImageIO.read() or if there are any other tips or ticks to reading large images such as these faster?
Thank you for your help :)

  • Can I delete all of the images in "All Images" without losing any originals?

Can I delete all of the images in "All Images" without losing any original photos? Thank you.

Simply: iPhoto is a database. Like all databases it requires that you manipulat the data via the tools provided and not through backdoors. If you delete matter managed by iPhoto (or for that matter, any database) through some other means then the database will be unaware of the deletions. The database will not reflect the changes and you'll have significant issues going forward with iPhoto.
So, to be really, really clear: if you delete Photos managed by iPhoto via the All Images search you will corrupt your Library.
It's your computer, your images and your iPhoto. You have the information, you decide how to use it.

  • Can Aperture not be set up to show a "Last Import" smart folder?

I'm trying to make the transfer from using iPhoto to using Aperture.
One thing I found really great in iPhoto was the smart folder that was simply set to show the last import, no matter when that import was done - whether it was today, yesterday or 6 months ago.
The reason I found this so handy was because I set my iPad up in iTunes to only sync the photos from that Last Import smart folder, rather than all my photos.
That way, every time I synced my iPad, I always had my most recent photos on my iPad, no matter when the pictures were taken.
Now with Aperture, I cannot see a way to create anything similar. The best I can do is to create a smart folder with photos imported within the last month, let's say.
But the problem with that is that if I haven't imported any new photos for over a month, then the next time I sync my iPad, then all my photos will no longer be on the iPad.
If I create a longer timeframe, to let's say 3 months, then I might end up with way too many photos trying to sync across, and that's something I don't want. I could end up with hundreds and hundreds of photos, and I don't have the free space to be able to do this!
When I used "Last Import" with iPhoto, then I always only had around 50 or 60 photos, because that's just generally how many I usually imported at any one time. Sometimes it was more, sometimes less, but the average worked for me.
So to sum up: Can Aperture not be set up to show a "Last Import" smart folder, regardless of date?
Or alternatively, is there any way I could "hack" or "trick" Aperture into doing something like this so that I always have a managable amount of the most recent photos on my iPad?

    Hello Brett,
that does not seem to be an easy probem as you discovered.
    Some Workarounds:
You might to use a smart album rule "Import session is" instead of a date range, but that will not be automatic.
Create a folder "recently added" and keep your recent projects inside that folder; create a smart album at the top level of that folder; move older projects somewhere else.
Or enable the Photo Stream - that is the current replacement for the "most recently added" album; it will (is supposed to) always show the most recent 1000 images.
If you are familiar with AppleScript, you can make Aperture run an AppleScript on import (Import Settings) to add your imported image to an album of new images. From time to time remove the older images.
Sorry, but no really convenient way to do it..
    Regards

  • Aperture/Photoshop plug in and image size

I'm having a problem I don't really understand.  I have Aperture 3 and I have CS5 that I'm trying to use as a plug-in for Aperture.  This is half an Aperture question and half a Photoshop one so I hope someone can answer it for me.
In Photoshop I made an "action" that is a sort of raised beveled watermark for my photos.
I open one of my images in Aperture and "fix" it - soften the skin, blur the background (whatever...) then I go to the top menu item "Photos" and go down and pick "edit with Adobe CS5."  And my image opens in Photoshop.  I go to the menu and pick the watermark action but when it works my watermark can't really be "read" because it's not fitting on the photo, it's too big and falls off the edges.  The photo is 1241x1280 px.
But here is the odd thing.  If I take that same photo, the very same size 1241x1280 and open it directly in photoshop, completely bypass Aperture, and run the watermark action, it's actually a bit small (but usable) it fits fine in the very same photo!  When I check the image size in Photoshop it is the same size (regardless of if I open in photoshop directly or go there from Aperture).
So this problem only seems to happen when I edit the photo from Aperture.  I'm new to both Aperture and Photoshop (crazy to try and learn 2 programs at once) and I don't know if I can make just the watermark layer in photoshop smaller.  But again it fits fine if I apply it directly from Photoshop bypassing Aperture.
Does anyone know why this happens and how I can make the watermark work?  Or can I make a watermark in Aperture?
    Thanks for any help,
    Susan

Like I said when I rescale it they way you said to do in photoshop it changes the size and distorts it a bit.
If you hold down the 'Shift + Option' keys while scaling, the text, shape or raster object will not distort and will resize from the center (AKA - maintain aspect ratio).
I run the full version of PS, so am not sure if the commands are exactly the same if you are running PS Elements, but there is a command at 'Layer menu > Layer Style > Scale Effects..' which can be used for scaling the bevel settings to match the scaling of the watermark item.
One exact way to do this in PS full version is to choose the Edit > Transform > Scale command and then use the option bar fields under the main menu bar to change the 'H' (Height) and 'W' (Width) percentages equally (to say 70% in each) and then use the aforementioned 'Layer........Scale Effects' command and enter 70% in that dialog. This should reduce the watermark and effects appropriately without distortion.
Note - indeed both programs are very deep (especially PS), but that just gives you more fun to learn as you go. Don't worry about mastering either, just work within a structured workflow so you can take the steps at your own pace.
Again, I am not sure what version of PS you are running, but the one book I suggest looking into more than any other is at the link below. It is somewhat dated, but the information is completely relevant and covers the general usage of Photoshop to make anyone comfortable with the tool set.

The companion website is still up and you can download all the images used in the book if you want to practice on the same images he outlines. Well worth a look if you want to learn Photoshop.

  • Can Aperture embed a copyright icon, batch mode?

    I'm on a 30 day trial of Aperture 2.
I want to post images on the web, from the Aug. 1 solar eclipse:
    http://www.caltechscience.com/08solareclipse/index.html
I typically manually put in "©2008 Bob Yen" in the lower-right corner, to dissuade copyright infringement. Can Aperture do this automatically (not just text, but an image copyright icon) via Batch mode?
Or, can Photoshop do this? I don't have the fancy CS2 version, only the Photoshop Elements that came with my Canon 300D.
Apparently, there are other photo management programs like Coppermine which will do what I want:
    http://coppermine-gallery.net/
What IS the advantage of Aperture 2 over other photo management programs?

aperture does it via a watermark on export ...
    http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-us&q=watermarkimages+inaperture&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
you will need to make a watermark image to use in the export and create/edit an export preset to use it ...
    http://www.kremalicious.com/2008/05/high-quality-watermarks-with-aperture/
it might just be covered in the manual ...
