Can Apple fix the 12 bit audio problem once and for all?

I have had persistent audio problems from I Life V3 all the way up to I Life 06. Sometimes it is synch issues. Sometimes it is audio dropping out. I have been through the various forums and applied the various remedies with some successs, some failure. The basic problem is that I have an extensive quantity of Mini DV tapes dating back to 1997, most recorded with 12 bit sound (prior to 2002). Apple's basic stance has been, you must use 16 bit sound or I Movie and/or I DVD won't work and . And proposes awkward workarounds. Basically placing the onus on it's own consumers. Why can't 12 bit sound support be included in I DVD 06 and these persistent audio issues put to rest once and for all? Is there some overwhelming technical reason why it cannot be done?

I don't know about overwhelming, but the DVD specification (which was not developed by Apple) calls for the audio to be sampled at 16-bit/48KHz (I think you might also be able to use 96KHz as well). This is what the software expects. If you choose to use another sample rate then the software may or may not be able to "fix" it in post. The real problem is that many camcorder manufactures set the audio to 12-bit by default.

  • Solve the MSN/Jabbber problems once and for all!!

    Hey there.
I use iChat to talk to my msn friends through jabber. I have three gripes with this, two I think can be Solved. The first being user name, everytime I want to change my user name (Which is not often) I have to go into a third party app to do it, thats a pain in the ***. Second, Buddy icons. Now all I want is my company logo to show up next to my name, I don't want to change it, unless I change my logo, but I have to be logged in on msn to show this, not through jabber.
So for you developers out there.
It's obvious that when you use msn it connects to a network and grabs your username and icon. So is it possible to make a widget that is connected to this network and that you can easily type in your username and also drag and drop the logo you want to use onto it. Then it stays connected with your info so your friends can see your buddy icon while you sit there happily using iChat (appart from the no transfers)..
Hope someone can solve this problem, cause if not i'm going to be spending a lot of time trying to do it myself!
    Thanks

    ok thanks for the tip.
Does anyone know a good easy to install server for osx then that I can connect mainly to MSN with.
Hopefully with features like Buddy Icons and file transfers.
So that I can use iChat with my msn buddy's just like my aim ones.
    Thanks

  • I will give $100 to the person who can solve this problem once and for all.

I'm not even kidding, dude. We can do PayPay, I'll mail you a check, whatever you want. That is how frustrating this is, that is how badly I want it fixed, and that is how much overtime I've worked lately thanks to being shorthanded at my place of biz-nass. I'm an hombre of my word, so if you actually come up with a solution that works, the cheddar will be yours. Okay let's hit it.
It's the skipping thing. First 10-12 seconds of a song - every song - will play fine, then iTunes skips, stutters, and basically does the god **** hokey pokey and shakes it all about. It happens most notably with songs that I double-click to play, but I'm pretty much noticing it on any song now after a transition is made. I've been using iTunes for ages and this didn't happen until the upgrade to 7.3. I have poured over these forums for nearly a week, tried every solution offered (even offered one of my own that actually worked for maybe four days before the whole thing started up again) and NOTHING. To save us all some time, here's what I've tried:
    - Downgrading. I'll admit I didn't do this correctly at first. I didn't remove everything according to the support guidelines, but I went down to version 6.05 and that did nothing to quell the skipping. I upgraded back up to 7.3 because hey, why not, and attempted the remaining trial fixes. I have since removed both iTunes and Quicktime, step my step according the the guidelines, and not only have I downgraded to my current running version of 7.2, I put both of the programs on my F drive (as opposed to the default C drive), my gigantic bonus internal drive where I typically keep nothing but my giganto music library. I thought putting the app on the same drive as the music might fix things. I thought wrong. Dead wrong. Dead diddly dum iddly wrong.
    - Quicktime settings. My settings for Quicktime have always been in safe mode with the output size at 16 bits. So when I saw this "fix" I just rolled my eyes. I used to have that dealio back in the dizzle when iTunes would just get all static-y and skip when I'd open other programs or even just minimize it, so that fix worked for that, but it's nothing compared to this. In simpler terms, that fix is like Superman, and this skipping? The kryptonite. Actually that's probably not a great metaphor, but we've got a ways to go and this is going to get mucho boring if I don't throw some chuckles out there. Ready for fix three? Giddy up!
    - Turn off cross-fade? It's never been on. I never really got the appeal of that, and also I think it resulted in some minor skipping back in the d. I also attempted similar fixes like turning off the equalizer, messing with the volume, closing last.fm, REMOVING an old album art retrieval program from back before iTunes got its **** together with album art, ANYTHING that might interfere with playback was turned off, removed, b-slapped, and sent crying home to its moms. Nada.
    - Recreating my library. This was the fix I offered someone else, because it actually did the trick for a few days. After an entire night spent reimporting 73 gigs worth of music, it played fine, but I did lose a ton of album art, playcounts, etc, so you can imagine how ****** I was when this wound up not being a permanent fix. I was beyond ******. I was livid. But I was taught in the dojos of my youth to channel my anger into productivity, and instead of sculpting a lovely bonsai tree, I set out to fix this pup once and for all.
    - That darn anti-virus! This was the final fix I tried, even though I wasn't using any of the culprit programs listed in the forums as causes of the skipping, and even those offering this as a solution confessed it was pretty hit or miss. But having tried everything else, having resorted to playing my music on MediaMonkey of all things, I figured I'd give it a shot. I used (reason for the past-tense forthcoming) AVG Anti-Virus, Lavasoft AdAware and something called Spyware Doctor that I think just came bundled with XP. I removed all of them. I had just done a virus scan recently to see if that's what was causing this, so I figured I'd be okay until I could redownload them after this fix wound up not working. And it didn't work, so there's that.
There may be a couple of fixes I've tried that I'm forgetting now, since I'm delirious after spending practically every night for the past week trying to fix this problem, while my girlf, Heather, sits and laughs at me while watching Clark and Michael on her MacBook. In fact, she's laughing at the $100 offer as I type this, but I assure you, if you offer a solution that works, the money is as good as yours. If you come up with a workable solution, I'll have to test and make sure it isn't temporary like the recreating my library thing, but I won't leave you hanging once I'm satisfied that it's fixed for good. I know it's unorthodox, perhaps illegal in some states, but I'm desperate here, peeps. The ball is in your court, and I beg you not to give up the rock.

I think the problem lays with Last.fm. I had the same exact problem as you. In your processes screen, end the task "lastfmhelper.exe" Last.fm still scrobbles. The tracks don't skip, although I notice there is still a bit of a lag in the first part of the song - but if you can deal with that, no skipping. I think you will have to end that task everytime you boot up your computer, or uninstall last.fm completely until they fix it; it is a bug in their software, as opposed to iTunes.

  • Firefox does not print. I AM DONE USING FIREFOX UNTIL THEY FIX PRINTING PROBLEMS ONCE AND FOR ALL!

Firefox does not print. Mozilla doesn't seem to care to fix this problem, ignoring the numerous customer requests and pleadings for help. At this point, I AM DONE USING FIREFOX UNTIL THEY FIX PRINTING ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!!!!!!!
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

I honestly think the OP is making the correct decision to quit using Firefox due to all the print-related problems and Bugs that are in Firefox, '''that Mozilla doesn't want to fix'''. And there are more Bugs that affect only the Mac-platform (like the one where the user has to open a page in a new window for the 2nd web page printed from that window), than there are on Windows and Linux.
Users having to reset hidden preferences repeatedly isn't a cure.
The same 3 print-related Bugs in 2002 that caused me to take 6 months to switch over to ''Phoenix'' from IE 5.5, '''are still present in Firefox!''' I print nothing from Firefox these days without viewing Print Preview first, then about 10% of the time I do a "View in Opera" and do a Print Preview there - which shows a good print out 95% of the time (which IMO shows the page isn't at fault), and print it from Opera.

  • [nForce] Lets solve this 1394 problem once and for all.

    Hi guys,
For the past 3months I have been trying to connect my Panasonic GS150 to my comuter in order to use Avid dvxpress pro. I have the problem of when I connect the camera to the computer, nothing happens. I also have this problem with my Ipod, however testing various different devices with the computer produces a strange outcome. Various different cameras work, xp pops up witha found new hardware device (like it should). Its very strange.
I started to think it was my system. I changed my onboard firewire to a pci card, same solution. So then, i reinstalled windows, same outcome. So i bought a new motherboard nforce2 platinum and to my total amazment, same problem. If was after i had totally failed in finding the solution that i started to look elsewhere on the net for anyone who knows the answer. It seems to be a VIA firewire chipset problem. Every post of people who had similiar problems where looking for the answer but NOONE has solved it, ive come across about 1000 posts with no reply's. Its a problem that thousands have but not many people ever use ther're firewire ports so they dont they've got the problem.
I really dont know what the problem is anymore, is it windows, is it certain 1394 devices, or is it the Via chipset. I havent a clue, so if anyone wants to attempt to solve this problem once and forall they will be the hero of about 3000 potential customers...
    Anyone?
    Jon.

Yes thats correct.   Regardless of the hardware, and various 1394 devices are recognised. I've bought a 4pin to 4pin cable which i will test with different devices to see if they are consistent with a 6pin to 4pin cable, it may be a power issue. Not sure what chip on pci card, heres the info from website.
    - Three external 6-pin FireWire ports
    - Interoperable with existing, as well as older, 1394 consumer electronics and peripheral products
    - Complies with OHCI requirements
    - Compliant with IEEE 1394a-2000 standard
    - Isochronous transfer support (guaranteed bandwidth) for DV video data transfer from Camcorder to PC
    - Provides three fully compliant cable ports, each supporting 400Mbits/sec, 200Mbits/sec and 100Mbits/sec traffic
    - Plug and Play & Hot-Swappable for all ports
    - Power overload and protection failure on each port
    - PCI bus master with PCI 2.2 Bus specification

  • Adobe ends your audio nightmares once and for all!

Are you plagued occasionally, like me, with less than perfect audio?
    Fret no more.
Adobe has the solution and you don't have to pay a fortune, as the technology is available in their budget Premiere Elements.
Take a look at this in-depth tutorial (between 15 to 40 seconds in) and hear how your audio problems can be consigned to the dustbin of history.
No need any more to worry about the quality of the audio as you shoot, for it can all be rectified with a click of a button in post.
    Come on Apple!
Neither Legacy FCP or FCP X has such technology.

  • Someone please settle this problem once and for all! (Duplicate Tracks)

I had an iPod about two years ago and ended up getting a different mp3 player. I now have a new 5G iPod and am having the same issue I had 2 years ago for the short time I had my old iPod. Duplicate tracks showing up in my iPod's library. I searched through these forums and found a lot of people having these problems, but none of the suggestions I read in the other threads seemed to do anything.
This seems to be an underlying problem for a lot of people and I don't understand why Apple would make their players this ********. I've had several other mp3 players in the last 2 years and you put in an artists' name and all the songs appear together under one name and are simply organized by Album, genre, year, etc... but, I loaded all my songs onto the iPod and even though tracks all contain the same artist name I get multiple listings for the same artist.
For instance, if I have several albums all of their filenames contain the artists' name, followed by a dash and then the name of the song. The artist name in the iTunes tag all match exactly as well. So why in the **** do names show up multiple times? I had this problem two years ago and it was never resolved, and I checked all over the boards and just couldn't come to a solution. I'll tell you one thing though, I can't believe it's this hard to get all of one artist under one listing on the player. Kinda dumb.
Please forgive me if this topic has been discussed to death. I just couldn't get anything useful out of any previous topics I looked at.

Alright I just checked my tracks and settings and what not and added some more music now I get a bunch of extra multiple listings. This is so ********. lol! Here is a screenshot of my iPod that I just took. Now this is just dumb because there aren't many ways that you can mess up the spelling in the name 2Pac. It's a 2, a capital P, a lowercase a, and c.
    http://home.comcast.net/~johnnybukkake/iPod_Screenshot.jpg
The first listing gives me almost all his albums just fine. Then for the second listing I get another one of his full albums. And for the last three listings I get a single song in each of them. I mean really, Apple... How does a flaw this stupid rear it's ugly head into so many people's players?!

  • Ok, i'm ready to tackle this flicker problem once and for all...

ok, so when it comes to dealing with old analogue video, i always have a problem of glitchy flickery video.... it only happens when there is actual movement introduced while recording to tape (to quarantine the problem, i bought a brand new tape for my old as dirt 8mm cam, and set it on a tripod, recorded some stuff, then captured it.... smooth as silk. then i picked up the camera and kinda stomped around while recording, imported it, glitchy and flickery, but only on each step. i set up the cam to capture live footage and no tape at all, shook the camera while capturing for effect, and smooth as silk. now, i have tried these tests with 8mm cam circa 1998, VHS-C cam circa 2001, regular VHS over shoulder super old cam circa i have no idea, and all the test results turn out the same in all 3 different cameras. i even tried interfacing the cams through a vcr, and still the same problem. i even bought an external stabilizer (the ones that sell for like 15 bucks a pop on ebay), and no help.
(pssst, heres a clip of what i'm talking about.... if you notice it does it at the beginning, but not at the end... there was only movement (foot tapping or something) at the beginning, but then no more movement from the camera holder at the end)
so i'll explain my set-up. i have my analogue sources going through a hauppauge TV tuner via an rca-to-s-video converter do-dad from the rca out on the cam, and using Roxio Capture to capture the footage. the computer is quad-core 3ghz, 8gb ram, win7 x64, 3 internal 1tb HDD all at 7200 rpm set to harm's suggestion for a 3 HDD set-up, Adobe Production Premium CS5.  i only do dv-avi with THIS particular workflow, so with THIS workflow we're just talking SD footage... the computer i have is more than a work horse for just SD.
what i want to know is.... if i were to go and spring for a Grass Valley Canopus ADVC, can anyone on here testify if using FireWire, and going through PrPro for capture instead of that roxio garbage, if it would come out being how i see the footage on tv? cause on the tv off the camera it is smooth as silk. but after it is digitized, it looks all glitchy depending on the circumstance. i thougt maybe it was the tape.... but ALL tapes? with 3 different cameras? were talking probably about 50 tapes i have dealt with.... all with this problem... the ONLY constant in all this has been the hauppauge TV Tuner card, and the Roxio BS software....
any wise counsel? cause i'm fed up with this problem!

What I'd like to know though is, has anyone here experience video like the clip above, before using a FireWire device, then used a FireWire device and noticed it cleared it up? I'm jut curious if the capture is the problem... Or if it's something else.

  • Fix your iphone sound issue once and for all.

I spent the last 12 hours reading through sound fix's for iphones of all different numbers colors and types. everything from random button presses to blowing into headphone jacks to downloading a gangam style app. im here to tell you none of that crap works. blowing into the headphone jack "appears" to work temporaarily but its not a fix. heres what i did and it worked. i spent an hour messing with everything i could find. i could get the sound to come on but only VERY briefly. like seconds at a time. no volume bars nothing. but ringtones worked fine. i took a small screwdriver and gently pushed the docking connector upwards after reading it could be a docking issue. and whaddya know... works perfectly. not one issue now. now this could have fixed it for one of 2 reasons i can think of. either A the docking connector was in fact dirty and i got some crap off it when i moved it up. or B the pins were somehow not sitting right and by pushing it upward i reset them. i searched HOURS just to fix it myself. and im posting this in the hopes it helps some of you so you dont have to go through the crap i just went through. give it a shot just dont push too hard and snap yer connector. "btw might take a few trys of pushing it upward in different spots. i did it evenly across it a couple times and fixed all my problems."

I've got an idea! give some of that money to me! I'll
use it for college tuition and other expenses when I
go later on this year (either OSU of UofM). Those
'other expenses' may or may not include a MBP!
But indeed there is a lot of room for a "MAY" include MBP...

  • [SOLVED] Kill the Gnome screen curtain once and for all

Author edit: you can see the fix that finally worked in post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1351594
I was inadvertently locked out of my own computer for about 10 minutes until I happened to stumble on the "Ctl + L" trick to bring up the login in screen.  How can I remove or disable the gnome shell screen lock for good.
    I already tried:
setting the "screen lock" to OFF under gnome setting > Privacy (gnome 3.10 appears to ignore this, or "screen lock" refers to something else)
the Disable Screen Shield extension - this has  not been updated to gnome 3.10
    Last edited by marko2010 (2013-11-19 18:04:06)

I think I finally found a way to disable the inactivity curtain in gnome 3.10. Launch dconf-editor then drill down org > gnome > desktop> session. Find the key for idle-delay and change it's value to 0 .
Or  you can do it in once step by running the command:
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay 0
Note you would think that going into the gnome control center and moving Privacy > Screen Lock to "OFF" would completely disable the screen curtain, but this never worked for me. The curtain would still come up after periods of inactivity, but would no longer ask for a password. Adding the fix above, completely gets rid of this pesky thing.

Did Apple fix the white spot problem in the older 15" PBs? By fix, I actually mean, in production - not having to send it in to have it fixed. If I'm going to buy an last generation, discounted PB it will need to be flawless.

We cannot go back very far away in the past in this forum, because posts are erased after a few months. I cannot personnaly answer the question whether or not the white spot where frequent or not, but it seems that there is for the moment very few posts talking about white spot in Jan/feb revision of PB15".
As I told you before mine from August has a very tiny white spot, that I will check carefully in the future.
If I can give you some advices :
Buy a refurbished PB less than one year old (Feb rev). Call Applestore and ask them if you can buy an Applecare on it, it will cover it for the next two years after the end of the warranty. Check the possibility to send it back if it does not work properly.
If your powerbook has no white spot appearing before 3 years of use, the probability it appears afterwards would be very low IMHO.

Please a simple problem but I don't know how to solve it. After installing 16 gb of ram all is good but when I turn on the computer it is a window signaling that all is correct. How is possible to delete once and for all that window? Thank you

Well then maybe you could take a screenshot because the appearance of such a window is news to me.
Also post your OS X version and what model Mac you have. The more detail, the better. Thanks.
To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse or trackpad. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot on your Desktop.
If you can't find it on your Desktop look in your Documents or Downloads folder.
When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.
Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.

  • Deleting audio file on device + Mac once and for all

Deleting audio file on device + Mac once and for all
    Hi and good day,
I don't listen much to music, but mostly audio files (radio programmes etc.)
But there is still one big drawback with iTunes:
What I want to do is to be able to __delete__ an audio file (or song)
on my iPad/iPod/iPhone (the Mac Library is there via Home Sharing)
    once and for all:
I don't want to have to go back to iTunes and delete them there.
I want to delete them on the device and forget about them!
    Please Apple it's about time.
    Any suggestions welcome!
    with best regards,

aMSN and Mercury only do video no audio, these are the only 2 progams that do video on the MSN network.

  • Fixing PATH (and MANPATH) once and for all

I think the list of directories in PATH should be:
    /Users/cb/bin:
    /opt/local/bin:
    /opt/local/sbin:
    /usr/local/bin:
    /usr/bin:
    /bin:
    /usr/local/sbin:
    /usr/sbin:
    /sbin:
    /usr/X11R6/bin:
    /usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current
Do you agree? Comments and suggestions welcome.
    Background:
I am trying to sort thru the endless confusion and set up PATH (and MANPATH) right, once and for all. Every package I install seems to have its own idea of what these variables should be.
I could set up a wrapper script for every installed command - but some subsystems, like Aquamacs and Python, let you create and use subshells. If the PATH in your subshell isn't the same as the one you use every day in bash, you could create bugs which are nearly impossible to track down.
My solution is to create $HOME/.setShells.sh -- which sets a uniform set of paths (and which will probably rewrite man.conf in the bargain). But I want to make sure that I'm choosing the right baseline, which is what the list above is supposed to be.
I'd appreciate your thoughts and/or assistance.

Correct is what's correct for you. You have to consider and repect how the vanilla system sets up the environment, and realize that the software you install and configure to make the machine yours will be different for everybody.
Your list looks reasonable. Of course we all know that PATH is searched in the order listed, so your ~/bin takes precedence over everything, and stuff you install in /opt and /usr/local takes precedence over the vanilla system.
You don't need a wrapper for every command. Environment variables are inherited. You simply need to set this stuff up in your ~/.bashrc and everything you run from the shell will inherit the environment. I think PATH may be exported automatically, but it never hurts to do so explicitly. So set those variables with lines like ...
    export PATH=
    export MANPATH=
It's important to understand the subtle difference between executing a shell command file and sourceing it.
    bash# ./file
... will run the file in a subshell, so any variables and environment changes will only be known to the subshell. Your interactive shell is the parent process of the subshell.
    bash# . ./file
... will run the file in the current shell rather than forking a subshell, so any variables, functions, aliases, or environment changes will remain in effect.
When a shell starts, your ~/.bashrc is sourced, not executed.
