Can apple TV be made to play .mkv files?

Has anyone been able to make apple TV play .mkv files?

If you install http://perian.org/ quicktime will be able to play mkv files including the ac3 audio.
You can use Quicktime to save the file as a mov which should then play on the AppleTV. Personally I use VisualHub, it's much faster and allows you to queue up a batch to process. It will depend on your system, but my machine will recode a TV show in approx. 30mins.
The Visualhub method will loose the surround sound. AC3 and DTS are not supported by the mp4 container so it will be converted to stereo. You should be able to keep the AC3 or DTS in a mov, but I've not tried this so I don't know whether the AppleTV will play the file.
As the new firmware will allow for HD movies with surround sound (according to the MacWorld keynote) there might be a fix for this then. We'll have to wait for someone to rent a movie and see what the container and codecs used are. Hopefully we'll be able to use 5.1 AAC and the AppleTV will convert that to AC3 out of the optical output for my surround amp as AC3 and DTS take up a lot of space.

can apple tv be used to play purchased movies from a ipad without broadband via airplay

The only times I've tried - on holiday/vacation with no broadband - this has failed because Airplay of protected content requires a brief authorisation connection to Apple's servers.
Conversely an ipad hooked up to a TV using the HDMI adapter works without internet for media stored on it as does a Mac computer running iTunes eg MacMini with HDMI out.

  • Playing .mkv files in QTX/QT7 video works fine, sound is distorted.

What I'm trying to do is open some .mkv files in Quicktime 7 so that I can export it as an mp4 with AAC audio (instead of AC3, 5.1). The audio during playback ends up sounding like a helicopter or what you'd hear if you stuck a piece of sandpaper in a box fan. When I play the files in VLC the audio is as it should be. I'm at a loss as to what the problem could be. I have version 1.2.1 of Perian installed as well if that helps at all.

It could be a 'difficult' form of Matroska file. FYI Matroska is just a container like MOV or AVI, and some mkv have the video encoded with Real Video Codec (RV9 RV10). Perian+QT can't decode this, but VLC will play .mkv files just fine on OS X, as long as they don't use H.264!
It's a bit of a lottery until Matroska decide to support the Apple platform. I have found this:
    http://mkv4mac.free.fr/index.php?lang=en&p=lec
    which may help.
But there may be another workaround: 1. Get Info the mkv file
    2. Change to extension to wmv. Save as wmv and that could work better.
Or this link may be helpful:

  • Unable to play .mkv files

I used to be able to play .mkv files with VLC Player just fine before. After I started using Boot Camp with Windows XP, I am unable to play such files because I get an error message saying this computer is too slow to process the video. I'm trying to play 720p movies, but haven't been able to on a 2.2 Ghz MBP with 2 Gigs of ram. So, if anyone has a solution, please post! Thank you!

Any other video works. I tried launching vlc with --no-video and then sound channel works. Both totem and vlc gives Segmentation Fault in terminal.
I remember when I installed vlc, it asked whether I will use gstreamer or phonon, I did choose gstreamer. Now I tried reinstalling vlc and it didn't ask for that anymore.
Ok, I tried opening other mkv files and they worked (I don't know why all the time I thought that the file is 100% ok, apparently it wasn't). But that file was similar to any other files (just a new episode of one TV show).
P.S. I noticed that I can open that file with Windows and there are audio bugs, but It shows video well... Ahhh, the most important is that video codecs are fine on my arch, so let it be so!
A strange bug, but if it's like that only with one wrong file, then it's ok. Sorry about bothering you here about my strange file

  • Playing MKV files with a burned DVD on BDP S470

I have found that my player is compatible with MKV files. My question is can I play them back on a burned disc? And if so, do I just burn the MKV file to the DVD like I would any other file(s). If not does anyone out there know the correct procedure and proper softwarefor taking the MKV files and transferring them to a DVD so they play in my player? Right now I use imgburn for making duplicates of my DVD movies for my personal backup. I would like to do the same with my BR movies especially the ones that require a double layer BR which right now cost wayyyy too much. I just want to convert so it can fit on a single layer BR

  • Stor.e TV + - playing .mkv files have sound but no picture

I've just transferred all of my .mkv files onto my store TV + but most of them have sound but no picture? They play fine on my PC...
Also, anyway of changing the icon on the folder to the actual dvd cover on the store TV +?Sick of looking at yellow folders!!
    Thanks..

    Hi
Found the StorE TV+ specifications on this Toshiba page:
    http://www.toshiba-multimedia.com/eu/store-external-hard-drives/tv-plus/
    The Store TV+ supports the video formats:: MPEG1 (DAT, MPG), MPEG2 (VOB, MPG, TS/M2TS/TP TRP), MPEG4 (AVI, MP4, MKV), VC-1 (WMV), H.264 (AVI, MKV,MOV, MP4), RM/RMVB (RM/RMVB)
The MKV files are supported by MPEG4 and H.264 video format.
Are the files recorded in this formats?
How about playing other files i.e MPG or AVI?
Furthermore I would recommend checking the connection to the TV.
Here is a user manual which I found on the Toshiba page:
    http://www.toshiba-multimedia.com/Global/Manuals/Store/Manuals/STORE_TVplus_User_Manual.pdf
It shows you how to connect the Store TV+ correctly.

  • 40TL938G: no sound playing MKV files

    Hello,
Last week I have purchased a Toshiba TV, type 40TL938G and I have two major problems which bother me very much.
Today, I spoke to the Toshiba Call Center from Romania.
I'd like to tell me if the future this problems can be solve or I'll be forced to sell it, because this TV does not satisfy my expectations.
So, the first problem is that if I want to browse of the net on some movies sites and I can't really see them, which is very, very annoying for me.
The guys from Toshiba Call Center told me that it's because the browser don't support viewing of any movie but does not seem normal as long as Samsung, LG and Sony have resolved these problems and specialists from Toshiba don't till now.
This is a very bad advertisement for Toshiba TVs and if my friends and my clients ask me if I'm satisfied with the Toshiba products, I can say only that I'm not satisfied, really.
The second problem that bother me a lot and I'm unhappy again is that on package and features TV is written that this TV supports MKV files but nowhere and no one wrote that Toshiba TV support MKV files but no sound because the sound does not working.
I tried to do a firmware update for this model but no exist.
It's possible soon to solve these two problems? If these problems hasn't solutions I'll be forced to sell it and to make a bad advertising for Toshiba's products, because I'm IT dealer and I have many clients and I don't want to lie my clients about product defects.
I'm waiting for an answer from you, soon as possible.
    Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Robert

    > The second problem that bother me a lot and I'm unhappy again is that on package and features TV is written that this TV supports MKV files but nowhere and no one wrote that Toshiba TV support MKV files but no sound because the sound does not working.
The MKV files are supported. But the mkv files have to support the right audio codec!
Found the info in the user manual (page 90)
    http://www.toshiba-om.net/LCD/PDF/English/TL938-4046-English.pdf
    _MKV files_
    *Video codec:* MPEG-1 Video, MPEG-2 Video, MPEG-4 part2, H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC)
    *Audio codec:* MPEG-1/2 Layer2, MPEG-1/2 Layer3, Dolby Digital (AC-3), L-PCM, MPEG-2/4 LC-AAC, MPEG-4 HE-AAC
    >The guys from Toshiba Call Center told me that it's because the browser don't support viewing of any movie
Sorry mate that you are missing some features but fact is that this is a TV browser and it may work differently than PC browsers. The manual says that this browser does not support platform-dependent technologies such as Active X and it supports only preinstalled plug-ins.
If flash plugin isnt preinstalled you will not be able to watch flash based content.
By the way: it occurs to me that you are thinking to speak to Toshiba stuffsorry mate, this is user to user forum and we all here are enthusiasts

  • Front row to play mkv files

Is there any codec to make this happen have tried perain and still doesnt work.
    Thanx in advance!

MKV files are a bit tricky to get playing, VLC might do it but I doubt that'll help frontrow, it might be worth using handbrake to re-encode these files into MP4.

  • Toshiba 23EL933 doesn't play MKV files

    Hi,
three days ago I bought a 23EL933 TV on Amazon.it.
I tried to play an MKV file but it doesn't work: the movie seems to start but, after one second, the file stops and I come back to the root directory of my USB pendrive.
Is the TV defective? Do I have to send it back to Amazon.it or do I have to bring it to Toshiba Assistance?
    Please let me know.
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    Luca.

    Hi Lucamarc.
The specifications state support mkv files.
Check if the file has a frame larger than the standard FullHD (1920x1080) and it is bi-lingual.
I have an 32SL833 and I had to re-encode some.

  • Can an older version of keynote play the files from keynote 08

My friend has an older version of keynote and when she tried to play a file from keynote 08. She could not open up the file and instead she got a prompt telling her to get a newer version of keynote.
Can she upgrade or will she have to buy iwork 08?

If you export a file as a Keynote '08 file, she'd need Keynote '08 to view it. During the save, it IS possible to choose to save as an older version, though, if that's what you'd like to do. Also, if her computer can run it, she can download the iWork '08 trial. Even after it times out in 30 days, she will still be able to open and view presentations (just not save changes).
