Can Apple TV replace Airport Express as wireless network extender?

I currently have a 1TB Time Capsule plus an Airport Express 802.11n 5Ghz setup as a wireless network extender to the TC. I also use AirTunes on the AE tied into our home theater system. I'm contemplating purchasing an Apple TV and cannot figure out (after browsing forums and Apple.com) if the Apple TV can fully replace the Airport Express for both AirTunes AND as my wireless network extender? In other words, if I buy the Apple TV to I need to have it serve side-by-side with the AE, or can I move the AE to another location to even further extend the network range? Many thanks for any help on this topic!

Yes, that's correct. However, the OP wasn't asking if they could do that. They wanted to use the ATV to extend the network to other devices, and it won't do that. It will connect to the network even if the network runs off a single computer as a opposed to a router. But devices not connected to the computer or router can't connect to the ATV.

  • Can I use an airport express as a range extender to a NON apple router using an internet cable (so not wireless)

can I use an airport express as a range extender to a NON apple router using an internet cable (so not wireless)

Yes, if the AirPort Express is set up to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name as the other router and the same wireless network password as the other router.

  • Can I use an Airport Express Base Station to extend non-Apple router range?

We have a Netgear 802.11n router in our house. I just bought a MacBook Pro and now am accessing out wifi from the other end of the house along with my iPod Touch 4g. Both seem to show at best about half strength signal strength. House is small and nearly all devices on same floor.
Can I use the Apple Airport Express Base Station as a bridge to extend our wifi network giving me stronger signal for my Apple devices or will it only work with Apple routers? Netgear and others like Hawking make wifi range extenders and those are still under consideration.

It would be extremely unlikely that an AirPort Express would "extend" the wireless network produced by the Netgear router using wireless only. Apple's "extend" feature appears to be proprietary among Apple "n" routers. As far as we know, it does not work with any other manufacturer's products for the purpose of wireless only extension.
If you are planning to connect the AirPort Express to the Netgear using an ethernet connection, then it could be configured to extend that way.

  • Airport Express Join Wireless Network Disables Ethernet

I have one of the the older Airport Express (firmware 6.3) and I'm trying to use it to connect a non-wireless machine to an existing network.
Act as a single Wi-Fi interface to any computer or almost any other devices such as game consoles that has an Ethernet port but doesn't itself have built-in Wi-Fi
If I choose "join a wireless network" it appears to disable the ethenet port. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong.
    My Setup
ADSL Modem ------ Time Capsule ---[wireless-g]--- Airport Express ---[ethernet]---Computer

Unfortunately, the Ethernet port is disabled when you configure the older AirPort Express version that you have to "join a wireless network"
It can be enabled in the newer 802.11n version, which uses firmware 7.x.x.  Sorry, not possible up update the Express that you have since hardware changes were made in the 802.11n model.

  • I can't see my airport express on wired network.

My airport express works like a charm, at least on every wireless device I have. My wired windows computer though refuses to auto detect him. I can ping to the device, configure it through airport utility when i give up the ip adress manual. It's such a strange problem anyone has already experienced the same? I already tried disabling my firewall and stuff but since i can ping i can assume the path to the device is free right?

Did you solve this? I have exactly the same problem.
Airport Utility cannot automatically detect my Airport Express from my wired PC.
The AE light is solid green. It is in client mode / joined to my existing network. I can see/stream to the Airport Express from my wireless laptop but not from my wired PC. My PC (connected to a Belkin wireless modem/router via ethernet cable) can successfully ping the AE and access it via Airport Utility when entering the IP address manually (via File / Configure Other...).

  • By creating wireless network with Airport Express, original wireless network stops functioning

I want to use the Airport Express to create a second wireless network downstairs. Upstairs I already have a wireless modem/router (Draytek 2850). The signal downstairs however is to weak. When I create the wireless network on the Airport Express, this works perfectly. However after the creation, the wireless part of the Draytek modem/router stops functioning. The wired part keeps working, but when I connect to the wireless part I access anything. Why is that?
The Express is set to Bridge modus and under TCP/IP I've selected that the IPV4 configurations has to go via DHCP.

I set the Network Name the same as the SSID, security type on the router is Mixed(WPA/WPA2)/PSK, which on the AX is WPA/WPA2 - personal I guess. The password is the same as the DrayTek.
Yes, WPA/WPA2 Personal on the AX is the same as the Draytek's wireless security option.
The radio channel of the Draytek router is 6, the channel of the AX is 11. Do I miss anything here?
No, it looks like you have all of the right settings as far as I can tell ... and you already stated that the AX is in bridge mode, i.e., Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode) ... correct?
If so, I would recommend performing a complete power recycle of your networking components, as follows:
Power-down the DrayTek, and AX. Order is not critical.
Power-up the DrayTek; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it to stablize.
Before powering-up the AX, verify that you can gain Internet access via a wireless connection to the DrayTek. If so, continue.
Power-up (plug-in) the AX; wait at least 5-10 minutes to allow it to stablize. It should have a steady green status light. If not, use the AirPort Utility to determine the reasons why it doesn't from the Status page of the Utility.

  • Airport Express! wireless network connection promp need Help!

First time user cant hook up to my wireless network just bought airport express to extend my my network but I keep on get an error say that my wireless network connection is valid any help anyone please on the brink of giving up!

Hi, yonhtna. Welcome to the forums!
Would you mind answering a few questions? I need a little more information about your network setup and about the exact nature of the problem.
    1) What type of router is your main router?
    2) Do you plan on using the Express to extend the range of your network, or are you only going to be using it for AirTunes or printer sharing?
    3) When and where do you see the error message? If possible, can you provide the exact wording?
    4) Is AirPort Utility able to find the Express?

  • Can I use 2 airport express base stations to extend my G and N  networks?

I currently have my Time Capsule broadcasting an N only signal at 5ghz and use the router that came from the cable company to broadcast a G signal. Can I buy 2 expresses to repeat both networks?

Here's what I see when I try this. Your results may vary.
Depending on your connection quality, distance from the TC, etc., the speed will drop by approximately 40-50% if you change to the 2.4GHz compatible settings that you mention. In other words, if you were getting a Transfer Rate of 250-270 on 5GHz, the Transfer Rate will likely drop to 110-130.
This is assuming that there are only "n" devices active on the network. If you have a "g", or "b" device active on the network, the overall network speed will drop to "g" or "b" levels depending on the device that is active. If you have a "b" device active, the Transmit Rate will likely drop to the 25-30 range.
You can check the Transmit Rate on your Mac by holding down the "option" key while you click on the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of the screen.

  • My iPhone wont recognize Airport Express as wireless network. Any Suggestions?

Yes, I have wireless turned on. My phone sees my AT&T router from the basement, but it doesn't see the AE at my feet.

Is the AE operating at 802.11n Mode ? If yes, then iPhone will not recognize it...

  • Can i use 2 airport express to extend airport extreme

My current set up: Verizon FiOs - using Airport Extreme as the wireless router (Bridege mode) with one Airport Express as range extender - works flawless.
Recently purchase the Airport Express Base - to use as another wireless range extender - but getting error when trying to set up via Airport utility app. Can i have 2 Airport express as wireless range extender?

Yes, you can use multiple 802.11n AirPort Express base stations to extend the 802.11n AirPort Extreme. Think of the extended network as sort of a wheel with the extended base station at the hub and the extending base stations on each of the spokes of that wheel. Each extending base station would be configured the same way.
Please check out the following Apple Support article for setting up an extended network.

  • Windows 2000 can't connect to Airport Express

I have a dell PC with Windows 2k and have installed Airport Admin utility. The PC is picking up the Airport signal and the Airport Admin identifies the signal also. But when I try to configure I get an error message (-6753). I downloaded the latest version of admin. I did not put in a password when prompted since I did not set one? The Airport has the blinking amber light. Help!!

You need to make sure this PC is already connected to the Airport Express's wireless network before you run the Airport Admin Utility. If you are connecting directly to the Airport Express, check the IP address assigned to your PC (it should be of the form 10.0.1.x if it has successfully connected).
    Three other comments:
    1. The default admin password is the word "public" (without the quotes).
    2. Make sure any and all network firewalls running on this PC are completely disabled, since any firewall will block the functioning of the Airport configuration utlities.
    3. If this Airport Express was already up and running (ie previously configured from a Mac) then there is no need at all to run the Airport Admin Utility from the PC.
    4. The blinking amber light is normal if the Airport Express is not connected (via cable or wirelessly) to a cable/DSL modem or an existing wireless network.

  • Can I use the Airport Express to connect to a Linksys Wireless Network and then use the Ethernet port on the Airport for a wired connection to a device for internet access?  Would I be able to then also use that Ethernet pt to a Ntwk Hub for more wired c

Thanks for the help.  Looked but not clear on what I am trying to do as being possible.  Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located.  Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet.  Thanks for the help.

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an 802.11n model, then yes, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the Linksys router and its Ethernet port would be enabled for either a single wired device or for an Ethernet hub or switch for multiple devices.

  • I have a Cisco wireless router.  Can I buy an Airport Express plug in booster for a distant part of my house or do I need an Airport Extreme base station instead to make the Airport Express plug in booster work?

Can I buy an Airport Express plug-in wifi signal booster to connect to a Cisco wireless router, or do I have to buy an Airport Extreme base station to make the Airport Express plug-in work?

You would need either an AirPort Extreme or an AirPort Express connected to the Cisco router, with a permanent Ethernet cable connection.
Configure the Extreme or Express that is connected to the Cisco router to "create a wireless network".
Then, you could add an AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network" to provide more wireless coverage for the network that the Extreme or Express would be creating.
Remember that the Express can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives, so it must be located where it can receive a strong signal from the "main" AirPort.
If you don't need the Cisco wireless signal, you could turn it off.....or use that network for guests or something similar.
The bottom line here......you always need two Apple routers if you want to extend the network wirelessly.

  • Can you share iTunes music w/Apple TV and Airport Express?

Can you share iTunes music between Apple TV and Airport Express?
I have been very happily using 2 Airport expresses to share my itunes library from my iMac to 2 other rooms. I just bought an Apple TV for the bedroom (and I ASSUMED to replace the Airport Express), and can not figure out any possible way to have the same music in 3 rooms any more.
    Anybody have any ideas?

I think you may have misunderstood the OP, I believe they wish to be able to walk from room to room and listen to the same music over the tv and the express. itunes will send music to the tv and the express at the same time but in two different streams, so even if you chose the same music over each device it would be quite difficult to sync.

  • Can an Airport Express be used to extend the range of my Comcast wireless gateway?

We recently moved to a big old brick and stone farmhouse.  When Comcast came they installed their new wireless gateway.  Unfortunately the construction of my house is pretty solid.  It effectively blocks the signal at the far end on the second floor.  I've been trying to use an Airport Express, newest model, to extend the range of my network.  Using the Airport Utility, it seems like it connects but the signal is no better.   Does the Airport Express only work as a range extender on Apple wireless devices, or am I missing something when I use the Airport Utility to set up the extended network?

The AirPort Express can extend the wireless signal from the Comcast gateway if it is permanently connected to the gateway using a wired Ethernet connection, and the Express is configured to create a wireless network using the same name and password as the Comcast wireless network.
The Express cannot wirelessly extend the signal from the Comcast gateway, since the wireless "extend" feature will only work with other Apple routers.
The Express can "join" the wireless network provided by the Comcast gateway for use with AirPlay or a remote printer at the USB port, but when the Express "joins" a network, it does not provide any additional wireless signal coverage in that setting.
