Can Apple TV stream other than iTunes, like Sling Box?

This may seem like a simple question, but I can't find the answer anywhere. I like to stream TV over the internet. Quite often I stream SlingBox from a friend's house, for example. I also watch tv on hulu and download movies from sources other than iTunes. Can I watch any of these on my TV through the use of Apple tv, or does Apple tv only work with iTunes? Thanks.

You can also "convert" the files (movies etc) to upload to itunes to play through 3rd party software like iSquint.
That won't work with a Slingbox, however, because there are no files to convert. It does live streaming from a TV, DVR, etc., over the Internet to a computer using the Slingplayer software or to another TV using a Slingcatcher.

Although Itunes is sort of the defacto standard for the iPod you can use a bunch of different programs that will interface with it...Try "Musicmatch" although you can't have "Musicmatch" on the same computer as Itunes as there is a compatibility problem so you have to uninstall Itunes to use Musicmatch but I think Musicmatch is much easier to use than Itunes.

You will need to use Airfoil.

  • AirTunes streaming with apps other than iTunes

I love the Dashboard "Rabbit Radio" Widget, but why can't applications other than iTunes support AirTunes streaming? I 'd like to listen to Internet Radio through the $2000 sound system the computer is connected to (through the Airport Express). Dashboard, and other applications, need audio streaming capability, just like iTunes.
It seems silly that we cannot do this. This also can be a problem with Safari as well, and other system-level or iLife applications...
Also, the last time I checked, iTunes won't even stream music video or movie audio through AirTunes-connected speakers...

    Hi
Airtunes is part of iTunes, it isnt really a stand alone app.
If you dont mind paying a little, Airfoil is a great little app that allows you to stream from most other sources to your Airport Express.
With regards to video/movie audio, it does tend to get out of sync when you stream to an AE!

  • Can you load songs with anything other than iTunes?

I'm trying to re-install itunes after my PC collapse, but I can't and I really want to upload new music to my ipod, but I can't, can I use any other software other than iTunes? Cuz seriously, I don't know what's the problem with iTunes, but I can't install it.

There is a lot of software for iPods that allow you to transfer music and more.
There are things like anapod (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/featpw.php), ephpod (http://www.ephpod.com/), podplus(http://www.ipodsoft.com/index.php?/software/podplus),and even a winamp extension (http://www.mlipod.com/).
They aren't hard to find, just search.

  • Can Ipot beoperated with any other program other than itunes?

I would really love to use my IPod. Unfortunately, no matter how many times I remove itunes and reinstall it, I get this message:
The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-50).
Since I can't get any help from anyone at Apple without purchasing it (and I don't feel I should have to purchase help for a malfunction in a program), does anyone know if I can download books, etc., on to my ipod using something other than itunes.
    Thanks.

As Katrina suggested, see try Media Monkey. For more info, see this article => Music Organizer MediaMonkey Runs Rings Around iTunes.

Warranty is valid only in country of original purchase (EU is considered one
country of this purpose). Warranty on iPhone purchased in the US is valid
only in the US. You must personally return the iPhone to the US or send
it to a friend/relative/co-worker in the US to take in to Apple for evaluation.
Apple will not accept international shipments for evaluation nor will Apple
ship out of the country after repair/replacement.

Not currently. Mountain Lion will bring this functionality, provided your iMac is Mid 2011 or later, when it releases later this month.

  • What happens if i use a software other than itunes to transfer music?

    Hello people,
Im new to apple and its softwares, tricks..etc.
So the question is i purchased some stuff from itunes i would like to have in phone and i also have loads of music in my pc that were taken from old cds etc...after my research i noticed there is a itune match or someting that can allow you do that with a 25$/year cost which i agree is not much and  i might end up doing it  but i don't find it right to NOT HAVE FULL control over my stuff...so is there anyway to be able to transfer these old songs into iphone without using itunes without any risk or problem?

  • Can apple tv stream from nas?

I have a Netgear ReadyNas Duo. With all my media from ITunes and the Firefly-Mediaserver is working on it. Can Apple-TV stream this content from my NAS without an working PC?
    Thanks for your answers.

I will copy and paste what I find out, hope it helps you.
I have an Airport Extreme, but it works with other routers as well. Find out what communication standard your router supports. DLNA or SMB.
The Airport Extreme I use does not support the DLNA standards which most external drives like LaCie Fule or DW My Cloud use. I found out it supports the SMB standard though. So a quick search on the App Store with SMB as the keyword showed up a few file managment apps and the first I tried worked!
It's called FileExplorer Free and can access files on your external drive attached to your Airport Extreme. There were more hits but since the first app I found worked I didn't bother to check out the other apps.
I tried FileExplorer with songs first and it worked. You can listen to your songs with your iPhone or iPad or Airplay them to your Airport Express and listen to them at your home audio system. I couldn't hear any loss of quality.
It also works with yorur movies. Just select the movie and watch it on your iDevice or Airplay it to your Apple TV. Works with HD movies as well with no problems. Only downside was that the Apple TV can only display .mp4 files. Even the movies bought on iTunes won't work with the app and the Apple TV. So I had to convert a few movies using the free converter HandBrake.
FileExplorer works with other types of files like photos or documenst too. Oh and as a bonus: The FileExplorer app can also access your library from the DropBox or Google Drive. Works with NAS drives as well. Looks like you need the paid version though for those extras.
In case your router supports DLNA search for a DLNA app like 8player.
So finally I can move my big movie collection to my external drive and still watch it without the need for the Mac or iTunes to run. Hope this helps you too.

Kirk, I'm almost certain that any Napster downloads have DRM on them. 2nd problem is that Napster doesn't work for a Mac.
The forums are having problems as you can see. When you post it is taking over 30 minutes to appear in the thread at the moment, so it's really not necessary to re-post.

My mistake. I've been happily listening to their streams. The subscription service does not work for Macs, yet. Sorry to all for the post(s).

  • My iTunes account is no longer showing my playlists or any of the music I have added from sources other than iTunes.

I discovered that iTunes is no longer showing any of my playlists or music I have added from sources other than iTunes.  My iPod, which is a 4th Gen Classic, seems fine and has all of my playlists and music.  My question is how do I upload my iPod to iTunes so that I don't lose anything?  I have read a lot of posts about people having similar problems and most of them suggest restoring from an old saved file.  I have two problems with this approach 1) I do not have a current back-up and 2) it does not seem to work for any of my non-Apple purcahsed music.  Does anyone know of an easy way to fix this?

I'd do a "deauthorize all" from a computer you have access to, and then reauthorise the computers you still have access to.
For instructions, see the following document:
iTunes Store: About authorization and deauthorization
