Can Apple TV use an external NAS?

I'm looking at buying a LaCie 3TB 2big NAS to use for serving media. Specifically, it will hold my entire iTunes and Aperture libraries.
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Lacie/301508U/
The primary objective here is to have a large, expandable, RAID-mirrored storage for all media content.
Can anyone tell me if I'll have any problems making Apple TV access content directly from a NAS?  This one supports AFP, Bonjour, etc.  Full specs are at the URL above.  I intend to simply move my entire iTunes library off my MBP's hard drive to the NAS.
Dan

Oh no, no don't be sorry.  It's fine; I just want to make sure I'm understanding this.  I'm just utterly blown away how freaking complex it is to deploy an external media server for iTunes content.  Apple products in general are so straight-forward, it's just such a strange juxtaposition to then not be able to do something that seems like it should be, frankly, rather trivial.
Anyway, that said, thanks -- and to everyone else -- this is helping quite a bit.
Now, to make sure I understand, I have basically two choices:
1.  I can go with the LaCie and store all of my media content on there IF I'm willing to accept that my MBP must be present, turned on, and configured for home sharing to make this work.  (Of course, it would have to be the MBP with the iTunes that's matched to the library on the LaCie)
2.  If I want a truly stand alone media server, I need to pony up substantially more money for an iMac, Mac Mini, or Mac Pro, and store all the content on there, and have Apple TV connect to that particular iTunes library.
Am I correct on these two points?
IF my understanding is correct, and I wanted to go with #2 (as if I could afford it!), I assume I could simply copy music or videos from that "server" to my own MBP so I can play that content while on the road (I travel frequently)?  Provided, of course, that I haven't capped out the five devices all iTunes content can be authorized to play on.
Thanks again for the help.

Apple has really crappy NTFS read-only that does not always work. And it is probably a licensing issue.
Paragon Software is constantly being updated and supported with their NTFS for Mac OS X - they also have an HFS+ driver for Windows that works - Apple's HFS+ read-only driver for Boot Camp / Windows does not.
I keep seeing problems and lack of support for MacFUSE, that could change.

  • Can no longer use an external display in closed clamshell mode

    Hi,
I have this weird problem that just started couple days ago.
I own a MacBook Pro Early 2011 since March.
It's always hooked up to an external display and the MacBook Pro's LCD is turned off (closed clamshell mode).
Lately, if the MacBook Pro's LCD is turned off, the external display won't show anything.
But as soon as I open the lid, the external display will then mirror the MacBook Pro LCD.
If I close back the lid, the external display will get blank.
I also tried to change the display settings with no luck.
In other words, I can no longer use my external display with the MacBook Pro in closed clamshell mode.
I'm wondering if someone experienced this problem before.  Thanks for help.

    Hello sebastieng
Open both, your MBP connected to the external screen. Open Preferences click here on "Displays" and then make the external Window to the main window by dragging the bar (line?) on top of the laptop window to the external window, which makes the second window the main window.

  • Can I still use my external HD?

I just switched over to Mac when my old IBM lap top died and I'm so happy with the switch! But I have a TM question:
Can I still use my external HD as a place to store files I don't want taking up space on my macbook?
I got the HD when my iTunes library got to big for my IBM, so now I want to continue to do the same for the Mac. I just reformatted the HD to work with TM, but can I still house my iTunes library on it? (keeping in mind that I'll probably be adding things to my iTunes sporadically
    Thanks!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You should probably partition the drive so that your iTunes library is on one partition and Time Machine is on a different partition. The way Time Machine works, it will just continue doing backups until the drive or partition is full. Then it will notify you and start overwriting the oldest backups. If your iTunes library is on the same partition, there would be the possibility that Time Machine could start overwriting the iTunes Library, which you do not want to have happen. So it would be best to either have a separate drive or a separate partition for TM.
    Good luck!

  • I have a Mac pro(1 free bay) and a mac mini I need to back both of them  Is it better to use an external NAS HD or an internal hard drive on my mac pro (mid 2010) What option has the faster GB/s?

I have a Mac pro(1 free bay) and a mac mini I need to back up both of them (time machine)  Is it better to use an external NAS HD or an internal hard drive on my mac pro (mid 2010)
What option has the faster GB/s?

Disk drive using native SATA bus interface will allow the drive to copy and always present and ready.
But once you have backup any hourly changes should be smaller and as long as the NAS and your switch should allow enough.
You should always have off line backups and don't rely on just one backup set or just TimeMachine.
WD RED models are designed for RAID and NAS and 7.2k instead of your more standard slower green 5400 rpm green models while still costing less than WD Blacks.

  • Can Apple TV use the balance from my iTunes Store when renting a movie? I couldnt find the option so I believe it will charge my credit card it made me add to the iTunes Store settings.

Can Apple TV use the balance from my iTunes Store when renting a movie? I couldnt find the option so I believe it will charge my credit card it made me add to the iTunes Store settings.

For the avoidance of doubt, you must have enough of a balance to pay for the rental in full, it won't take the balance and the difference by credit card. If you don't have enough of a balance it will all be taken by credit card.

  • Why can't i use my external screen with messagecentre

I could not get the message centre in Mountain Lion working. Now I read that it will not work when you've got a second screen connected to the iMac. What for is this, will there be a solution for this soon?
And how can we ask Apple to change this?

    Hi,

I presume you are talking about the Messages app.
To start it off you need to list an Apple ID that you want to use with the iMessages Service.
This can then be used to send and receive iMessages from iOS devices or other Messages apps
The app can also use the older style iChat Screen Names and IDs and these can be added the same way they were in iChat.
The "iChat Side"  is the bit that does the Screen Sharing and it should cope with some one using two Displays.
What you have to remember is that two side by side displays may have to be shown on one 15" monitor and everything can look very small.

  • Can I restore using an external DVD drive?

Hey everyone, I've got a unibody MacbookPro with a broken internal disc drive.
My roommate has a new external USB super drive. Can I reinstall my OS using his external CD drive? Or will I need to make a DMG of my original install disc and do it that way?

As far as I am aware you should be able to reinstall your system software without any issues using your roommates external disc drive.

  • Frustrated! Can't I use an external monitor?

I plugged in the adapter to my 17" LCD. My screen background appears on my LCD but that's it. No icons, no nothing, just the pic of my son. I changed my background settings on my Powerbook and nothing happened on the LCD. It just stays the same. The entire LCD is just a picture with no mouse, no icons - nothing. What am I doing wrong? Also, I thought on the Powerbooks, you can close the lid but the external monitor stays alive. On mine, it goes off when the lid is closed. Please help. Thanks

    P.,
In yr System Preferences, there is a 'detect displays' function in Displays. You shd find what you need there by clicking on it & then 'arrangement.' In order to have windows or items on the 2nd display (external) you need to drag them there.

  • How do I use an external NAS (Synology Rackstation) as a storage device for Caching in OX Server?

I have a folder shared over AFP and am connected, but can only see the local device in the storage selection area.

You cant store server data on a different server... officially
The only way I see it work is to create a Symbolic link go here to read about it http://www.macworld.com/article/1153437/symlinkservice.html
In a nut shell, go to MacHD/Library/Server and replace the Caching folder with a symlink to the NAS
As I say completely unsupported, proceed at you own risk.

  • Can iMac be used as external monitor for old Mac Mini?

I just bought a used Mac Mini PPC 1.4GHZ, 1GB Ram, 80GB HD. It will be shipped to my parents out of state but until then I need to configure it at home. Can I connect it to my iMac 20"?
In other words, is there any way to turn off the direct connect of the iMac's internal workings to the screen and have the screen used temporarily by a different computer?

Although you can "remote control" any Mac from your iMac20" through a network connection (using Screen Sharing in Leopard, or free VNC software in earlier OSX releases), you will need a real monitor to do the initial set up of the Mini - including the steps necessary to activate screen sharing.
The only iMac that had any video input ability was the original CRT Bondi blue iMac from many years ago. Your iMac has video output, but no video input.

  • How can I best use an external editor with iPhoto?

I want to use Pixelmator or Elements to edit photos in iPhoto, but I really don't want to export/import them every time. Is there an "edit with an external editor" option I haven't found?

    Hope this helps:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..

  • Can Apple programs use Hi Def footage to make a conventional DVD?

Hello, I am going to shoot a program on Monday that is special and that might be nice to ultimately have in Hi Def. But what about the immediate future? Since DVD Studio Pro does not burn Hi Def DVDs, and most people can't play them, I would like to initially use the footage in a standard way. Can I shoot in Hi-DEf, import into FCE, and then export to a Final Cut Movie that will be that can be imported into DVDSP to create a non-Hi-Def disc? (I am using a Sony HDR-V1 camera.) Hope my question makes sense.
    Thanks, Bob

Yes, if you use a SD DVD then both iDVD and DVDSP will convert the HD material to be SD to work on your disc.

  • Can you connect external HD to time capsule and use it as NAS?

I have a Time Capsule which I uses to back up my family's mac.  I also have an Airport Extreme to extend the range.  I have no problem reversing the function as to have the Time Capsule extend if need be.
My wife's old Power PC display took a crap, and we're thinking of getting the new MacBook Air.  Unfortunately this means space will be a premium.  We're wondering if it is possible to connect an external HD to either Time Capsule or Airport Extreme to use it as NAS?  We plan to move all our videos, mainly home video, and iTunes library to it and have the whole family access it from there.
There are few problems I might see.  While me and my wife share the same iTunes library, my little sister totally have different library.  I'm sure some songs overlaps.  Is there any way to consilidate this without having overlaps?  Also, is it possible to still organize it so I only have my current library sync to my iOS devices without manually managed music?
I have a few old HD from my macbooks that just sitting around.  One is 250GB and the other is 320GB that I'd like to see it getting some use if possible.

I can't answer all your questions, but what you propose sounds feasible.  You should find additional advice in this article.
