Can Applescript or Automator be used to keep Character Viewer open?

Since the upgrade to Mavericks the behaviour of the Character Viewer has changed, where it no longer 'sticks' (stays both active and on top) as a visible window when you switch applications: now it needs to be called up from within each application, and will be visible when working with that app.
Is it possible to use Applescript or Automator (which I don't yet know how to use), to make the Character Viewer always stay open and visible while switching between and using any application, in effect restoring the way it worked before Mavericks?

(This question relates to one I asked here. It will be some time before I can access the computer in question and try the solution suggested there specifically for Word – my interest here is in finding out if it is possible to get the old Character Viewer behaviour back using Automator or Applescript.)

In fact, in looking on my system I can find no .plist file with CharViewer in it, and it's not obvious any of the .plist files are related. I did find in the system library:
Macintosh HD/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Keyboard.prefPane
I don't seem to have a Library folder in my Home folder anymore (since Mavericks?). It looks like it now resides at Macintosh HD/Library.
In the MacHD/System/Library there is an interesting folder: Input Methods. This is empty in MacHD/Library/Input Methods, but full of the following applications in System/Library/Input Methods (see screenshot). The first two look relevant. But I really don't know what I'm doing.

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

Can AppleScript dialog configured to use high resolution on macbook retina?

I've just got the macbook retina and noticed that script dialogs displays text in low resolution. Is there an configuration parameter that needs to be set to high resolution texts?

There aren't any settings you can make or change for the dialogs from Standard Additions. I don't know if there is an update planned - some of those look to be pretty old.

Smart Previews. Can't eject HD whilst using LR. Upon re-opening without HD, can't locate catalog..

So, I’ve got my external HD plugged in. I’ve selected the photos I want and I’ve 'Built Smart Previews'. It’s done that, fab.
Then - keeping Lightroom open, I go to Finder and click eject on the external HD. Except it won’t let me eject because ‘Lightroom is using it’.
So, instead I quit Lightroom, eject the HD, and then re-open Lightroom, but it can’t find the catalogue file, so asks me to locate it. Do I need to copy the catalogue file to the Desktop too? That seems oddly hands-on…?
(PS - I create a new catalogue for each wedding I shoot, and those catalogues are kept on the external HD). That's how I've worked until now.
Do I need to keep those catalogues on the laptop's HD instead?
I'm using a rMBP, OS Mavericks, LR5.3

Yes, if you want to take the EHD offline. How else could it work?
Also, as well as copying the catalogs you'll also have to include the previews as well (both library preview cache and the smart previews cache).

How do i use the character viewer

can anyone tell me the system in using the character viewer, i can drag and drop but surley there must be and easier way than that!

UPDATE: I had 36 Safari windows open and minimized on the dock from my last session; 20 of those windows failed to open b/c Safari "couldn't find the server"; I just went to the URL bar of all 20 pages and clicked return, and all 20 pages loaded perfectly, without dropping any images or losing formatting. This is a puzzle!!!

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

In an AppleScript, can compression level high be used when saving an image as a JPEG?

When using AppleScript to save a copy of an image file as a JPEG on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, can "compression level high" be used in the code, or can only "compression" be used?
The part of the AppleScript dictionary for Image Events indicates that "compression level high", "compression level low", and "compression level medium" can be used, but when I type any of those three in the code and try to save the AppleScript file, the below error is displayed, and the word "level" is highlighted in the AppleScript Editor:

you need to open the image in image events before you can save it as a different format. you have to make a distinction between the image file (a file system object) and the image itself (the data that is the digital representation of the visual image). what you want to do is open the image file in image events to extract the image data, then resave the image data in the new format. looks something like this (changing just the last bit of your script):
set theImage to choose file with prompt "Please select an image file:" of type "public.image"

When Restore/Move/Size are clicked, the pointer just goes to the upper left corner of the screen with all combinations of clicking/dragging having no success. What causes this, and what can be done to move it back?

If a window disappear then using the system menu can make it reappear or make it possible to move that window in view. I don't know what causes it to make the window disappear in your case if it does work correctly if you start Firefox.
You can check the browser.link.open_newwindow prefs on the about:config page if you want to open all links in tabs in the current window.

I got the same problem. The percentage of getting this problem is around 10% of all my dial/receive calls.
The problem usually appears when I receive calls. The phone app will freeze, and I cannot dial or receive calls even I closed the phone app, however, most other apps work properly.
Once this problem happens, I will not be able to turn off the phone by holding sleep button, the only way I can get rid of it is holding sleep and home button at the same time to reset the iphone.

Using Applescript or Automator with Awaken

so, i am trying to write a script and/or automator workflow to set up alarms in a program called awaken.
i want it to work like this
every sunday night, i want a script/workflow to run (triggered by an ical event most probably) that will search for events in the next week and somehow input those times as alarms into Awaken.
this is what i've figured out so far.
in automator, i have a workflow that will search for an ical event, output that info to an event summary, and then filter that text by the word "date" or "time" and then set that to a variable.
so, basically, this gives me a variable with a date and/or a time. but how can i get this into awaken? i can use watch me do to open awaken, make a new event, and start to input the text, but how can i apply that variable to the text?
any thoughts/suggestions?

and it works so far without any errors, however, when it tabs into the date/time fields of the awaken window to type the variables, they don't get typed. if i don't use a variable and do "keystroke "2010" or something to that effect, it works, but that won't work for me since i want this to read the value from the ical event. it will type a variable value into the title field, but not into the date or time fields, and i can't figure out why.
