Can AppleTV be setup to use Ethernet instead of wireless?

When I use the wireless, I often get freezing and jumping during movie playback. I've connected the AppleTV via ethernet cable (Cat6) to the router which connects the all systems in the house, but unless I have it connected via wireless... none of the computers (iTunes) see it. Is there some setting necessary to allow ethernet connection to the iTunes library or is AppleTV only capable of wireless connections?

The Apple TV can be connected either wirelessly or with wired ethernet and it automatically detects which to use based upon whether an ethernet cable is connected to the unit. If none of your computers (iTunes) can see the Apple TV when it is connected with the ethernet cable then you either have a setup or network problem or the other computers are on a different local network.
Have you tried restarting or resetting the Apple TV after you switch the connections? You can restart the Apple TV by holding down on the remote's menu and minus ("-") buttons simultaneously for about six seconds.

  • Cameras Wired Ethernet instead of Wireless

Comcast supports Powerline adapters which could be used to wire the cameras for ethernet instead of wireless...... Can you have the firmware settings by default connect to wired?   Currently the option in the cameras is set to by default go over wireless and if I have a camera witha  weak wireless connection it will use that over a strong wired connection with the latest firmware release.

    Use the Airport Admin Utility.
On the Music Tab enusre that Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port is checked.

You can do this, but file transfers / copies will be very slow over wireless.

  • Can airport be setup with an ethernet connection?

I'm having challnges setting up my Airport express via ethernet cable connection directly to my router.  It will setup wirelessly no problem, but I occasionally get dropouts when streaming music and I'm hoping to remedy that with a direct cable connection.
I believe I have to turn the wireless option off via utility, which I did, but still having issues - can anyone provide some insight as to the proper settings to connect it via ethernet cable?
Here is my setups if it helps:
Airport express, model A1264 (which is 2nd gen I believe)
Cisco router (provided by my intenet provider)
    Macbook Air, running 10.8.5
    Airport utility version 6.3.1
    Thanks!
    Phil

AirPort Utility 5.5.3 will work fine for that.
Reset the Express back to factory default settings as follows:
Power off the Express for a few minutes
Then, hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for another 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <-> port on the Cisco router to the Ethernet port on the Express
Open up AirPort Utility 5.5.3, click on the AirPort Express, and click Continue
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Express and password, etc.and click Continue
Choose the "Join" option, then click Continue and then click the option for the Express to disable the wireless and have the Express connect to the  the network using Ethernet, then click Continue
Review the settigns and click Update. Allow a minute for the Express to restart.
You may now need to restart both the Cisco router and the Expess and you should be all set.

  • Backup to Time Capsule too big for wifi - can I start again and use ethernet?

    Hi all,
I've just bought a 2TB Time Capsule, and I was hoping (stupidly) to make my initial Time Machine backup from my MacBook Pro (OSX Mountain Lion) overnight using wifi. The backup is roughly 400GB, and obvously it only managed about 20GB of that. I've hunted down an ethernet cable today but I can't seem to figure out how to make this work - it won't seem to use ethernet when I try to continue the backup.
If you know how to help with this, please do let me know - I absolutely have to get this computer backed up this weekend.
    Many thanks,
    Merlin

Fantastic, thank you! So, it really is as simple as switching the network mode of the TC in Airport Utility to 'Off' when I want to use ethernet?
Kappy - status in Airport utility has two amber lights for 'Internet Connection' and 'No DNS Servers' - I assume all this means is that it has no wireless internet connection?

  • Using Ethernet network and Wireless to connect to ARD

Hi, I am using ARD to connect 2 mac minis, 1 macbook pro and a G4 powerbook. I have been having some serious issues with trying to network them all together. When I connect 3 of the machines using ethernet and an airport extreme everything is fine, but the 4th machine is uncontrollable. It shows up on the scanner but shows up as offline. Has anyone had any luck using a combination of ethernet and wireless? It is all through the same network, but the hope is that the 2 laptops can connect wirelessly to the mac minis.

No my DSL modem is not a dumb one, its a DSL modem router, "qwest Actiontec dsl modem wireless gateway", GT701.
To avoid confusion in future support threads, you should refer to that as a "router" or "modem/router", rather than simply as a modem.
This configuration works fine, both computers are on the network, get assigned different IP addresses by the DSL Modem, and most of the time can see each other and the internet just fine, as long as the iMac keeps the Network settings that I set, for the IP address of the DSL-Modem router ("xxx.xx.0.1"), but occassionally after a restart it will revert back to using "xxx.xx.1.1" for the router IP address which is not a valid IP address on my LAN.
Why would the iMac try and use the old settings when I specifically set and LOCKED the correct settings?
If the "modem router" is configured to be a DHCP server and if your computers are configured to get their network settings via DHCP (Network panel of System Preferences, "Configure IPv4" set to "Using DHCP"), then in theory you shouldn't have that problem.

  • Can't connect to modem using ethernet

    I am on a power mac g5 running 10.4.11.
I just got a new modem Motorola sbg6580 & I can't log in to it via ethernet on my mac, It doesn't even see it.
I can log into it using an even older mac and a pc, but my current mac I have no luck.
I can unplug from the new modem & plug into the old modem Motorola sbg900 & it see's it fine, so it is not a bad ethernet cable or port.
I called the Motorola tech support & they are stumped too.
I also tried another new modem with the same result.
When connected to a new modem if you look under system pref, network, ethernet, it says ethernet cable unplugged.
I deleted all locations & made a new one, but still no luck.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Your Solaris 10 does not see the NIC card on your system. Use below tool to see if Solaris 10 (8/07) is capable of detecting the NIC card:
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.jsp
If it's not supported, you'll most likely need to get one that's supported by Solaris 10.

  • Can i communicate with labview, using ethernet or seriel modbus.

Is it possible to communicate with a i/o module and labview. I can communicate with ethernet, canbus(cscan, devicenet), rs232(modbus).
    What is the easiest solusion.
Is it necessary to buy PC-cards for the communication or have only to download some drivers.
    Thx

    Hello,
To communicate with a CAN/DeviceNET bus you will need an interface card in your PC. NI has such cards along with LabVIEW VIs:
    http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/nioc.vp?cid=1329〈=US
    http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/nioc.vp?cid=1311〈=US
To communicate with Modbus, you will NOT need any special cards but you do need software drivers for it (you'll obviously need an Ethernet card for TCP/IP and Serial port for RS232). There are several options for these drivers, however:
    1. Write your own driver VIs. You'll basically implement the Modbus protocol in LabVIEW. Modbus is a simple and open protocol.
    2. Try to search the Net for such existing VIs. I believe someone has already written such Modbus VIs.
    3. Use the Industrial Automatio
n OPC Servers suite from NI:
    http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/nioc.vp?cid=4584〈=US
    4. Use any third-party OPC Server for Modbus.
NOTE: in case you opt 3 or 4 above: though you may use DataSocket in LabVIEW as an OPC Client, you may want to consider LabVIEW-DSC which has a built-in OPC Client, and hence better support for OPC.
Hope this gives you some options.
    Regards,
    Khalid

  • Can two WRT610N routers be used to create a wireless connection between switches?

I am getting somewhat lost in the jargon involved with routers and access points and need better understanding of the functionality of the WRT610N router. The questions I need answered are:
To eliminate the need for WUSB600N USB adapters for each of the happily switched office computers: can I use two WRT610N routers to connect one end of the building to the other without wires in between? One end has the switched LAN the other has the internet connection.
If this is not the highest bandwidth solution... what is?
Sorry to go off topic but, whether the above is feasable or not, can I establish more than one wireless network - one internal and one for guests - using a WRT610N router?

Firstly thank you for your interest
It is not possible to connect the two parts of our network with a physical connection such as a wire. The goal is therefore to wirelessly join one end of the building to another with as much bandwidth as possible. I am hoping to use high end dual band N equipment. However as linksys does not seem to have an access point which - with my limited understanding - suspect I could connect to an existing gigabit switch. I wish to know if a router can be configured to slave itself to the internet connected router.
One end of the building has the internet and a reception room workstaion, the other end currently has 3 computers and a NAS which need to be connected to the internet and each other, as efficiently as possible. I am concerned that USB adapters for each computer would drain workstation resources and be quite expensive.
I am pleased with every aspect of the WRT610N as a router but need guidance as to how to best deal with the other end of the building.
Furthermore I would like to provide a separate independent wireless network for guests to access the internet. Can one dual band router produce two networks? One for internal use only - secured against the outside world and a separate network for guests. If not can a/the second router pull this off?
    Does this explain more?
    Thank you for any assistance

  • How can I tell if my computer is using ethernet or wireless for downloads?

    Hi,
My computer is hooked up via ethernet to my router (base station) which is connected to my DSL modem, and I also have my Airport on because I have extended my network with an airport express so I can stream music to my stereo across the room using iTunes.
I've noticed in the Airport menu that my computer is connected also to my wireless network which I use for getting online with my iPad.
Can I assume that my computer will use ethernet and NOT wireless for accessing the internet, downloading files, etc?
How can I tell which network connection is being used? Are there tools for monitoring the network that would allow me to easily determine if a particular download is going over the ethernet or the wireless connection?
Clearly, I want to use the hard line ethernet connection for everything and use the wifi only for my streaming music function for speed purposes...
    Thanks!!!!
    Elisabeth

    Hi,
Internet is served on the priority basic from the System Prefrences Network pane.
If ethernet is on top you getting it from ethernet if Airport and so on...
So depending on internet speeds set the priority to access fast internet speeds.

  • HT1338 I use Ethernet for a season and when I want to revert back to WiFi, got a message that AirPort is not installed

I can't launch WiFi after using Ethernet
    Anyway to reset this?
    I'm currently connected using Ethernet

That's an Outlook issue. You'll probably get better responses posting on the Office for Mac forums.
