Can automatic master application be scripted by paragraph style?

Help! I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a few days now. I could have sworn I've seen this done somewhere, but I can't find any references now. Someone suggested that it might be scriptable, so...
I'd like to conditionally select a specific master page template based on a paragraph style.
For example, the first paragraph style on every chapter in my book is "Title (Chapter)." When that paragraph style shows up, I'd like InDesign to automatically apply the appropriate master page template to that page, but default back to the standard master for all following pages.
Anyhow know how to do this?

Hi
There is a solution from freelance book design but is not gree. A more basic script can be found by google searching for ApplyMasterpageToStyleCS5.
I hope it helps...

    Need  Bookmark creation script for Paragraph style. Anybody can help me pl?

    Hi hasvi,
    I wrote a similar script which creates a bookmark on each page in the "main" text frame at the begining of the frame (the 1st insertion point). Here I attached the script and a couple of sample documents: before and after. It's more complex than what you want but you can use it as a starting point. In fact, you have to find a certain paragraph style, loop through every found item and insert a bookmark, say, at the beginning of the found text.

  • In Pages (5.5.1) can I create multiple Paragraph Styles within one paragraph?

    In Pages (5.5.1) can I create multiple Paragraph Styles within one paragraph.
    I need to make a table of contents for my Mater's Thesis and want to use the automatic table of contents feature.  I want the first sentence of a paragraph to have a different paragraph setting than the rest of the paragraph.  Is this possible?
    Thanks!

    Nice of you to be doing this for your Mother's Thesis.
    There are several issues here:
    1. A Paragraph Style is what it says, the style for the paragraph
    2. You can format text within a paragraph by applying a Character Style
    3. Pages 5.5.1 lets you apply formatting to overall text for the T.O.C. but not parts of it and you can not retain that formatting as a Paragraph style
    So in answer to your question, no.
    You will need to create the T.O.C. manually and unfortunately as Pages 5.5.1 can't create bookmarks (just one of over 100 missing features) you will be unable to link the T.O.C. to the referred pages in the list.

  • Quick paragraph style application transformation ... or reverse engineering a document the hard way?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm using Indesign 5.5 for Windows and have inherited a technical document with no styling applied (not even text threads or auto-pagination), but all the fonts are in the correct sizes and colours. So it looks ok in print, but trying to actually do anything with it is a nightmare.  For obvious reasons I WANT to apply paragraph styles to the document so I can generate a new auto-updating TOC, maintain and add to it, and all the other good stuff that means.
    My question is this - is my only choice to go through page by page and apply new styles (matching their current appearence) to every different heading and bullet point, or is there a nice easy way (or script) that i can use to whizz through the document for me, neatly applying a new style to each different font variety or element it finds (not altering their appearence) and leaving me with a nice list of styles I can rename (then take all the credit for? ha!) Basically take a document that's already been put together wrong, and make it right? I think this might've been imported into InDesign from something like Quark, hence the state it's in, but I don't have access to anything but this version. Any help you could offer would be great.  Oh, and if (as I suspect) my only option is indeed to apply all the styles manually one line at a time, then feel free to point and laugh, I doubtless deserve it.
    Thanks!
    Phil

    If you need to reproduce the existing page layouts, I'd suggest you read up more on what paragraph styles can do, before annihilating whatever layout and flow behaviors have been stuck on the content. For example, if level "X" headings always start at the top of a text frame, or top of a page, or even top of a right page, or top of a left page, a paragraph style property can do this. So you'd want to create and apply a paragraph that does this to those paragraphs before you thread text frames; the top of <whatever> frame paragraph property will keep the paragraphs in place.
    It is possible to create paragraph styles with properties that behave crazily when they do what you define for them. For example, you can define a paragraph style that sets the style of the paragraph that's created when you press Enter/Return. You can also use the smartness built into the Next Style property. If a paragraph style, say Head1 is defined to create a new paragraph when you press Enter/Return, it can also apply its next style property to the paragraph follows Head1 in the same text selection. So, if you select a paragraph that's supposed to become Head1 (which defines its next style as BodyAfterHead1) and also select the paragraph that follows it,  and then hold down Ctrl+Click on the Head1 style's name in the Paragraph Styles panel, Apply "Head1" then Next Style appears. If BodyAfterHead1 defines Body as its next style, and more than two consecutive paragraphs are selected, Head1 will be applied to the first paragraph, BodyAfterHead1 will be applied to the second paragraph, and Body will be applied to the third and following paragraphs.
    So, you'll be investing in setting up the Next Style property for paragraph styles, and selecting as many consecutive paragraphs as needed for applying a pattern of styles that agrees with your next style definitions. Each time you use this feature, you're collecting benefits from your investment.
    If you need to reproduce the look of the layout on some number of pages, you could export to PDF and use a script to efficiently place each page of a multi-page PDF on a "PDF layer" you create, that appears on every document page in the ID document, lock and move the layer below the active document layer, and use it as a placement underlay.
    Search Google for terms like "InDesign apply style and next style," "InDesign place multipage pdf script," "InDesign installing and using scripts," "InDesign paragraph style keep options," and "InDesign start paragraph options," without quotes, for informative links to anywhere on the Web, as well as on these Adobe forums. To limit the searches to Adobe forums only, include "forums.adobe" without quotes in the search query.

  • Automatic numbering (non-paragraph style)

    Some years ago I purchased InSequence from Virginia Systems to add automatic numbering not related to a paragraph style but anywhere in text. Although the interface is clumsy and was never updated, it was useful as the only workaround out  there. But they refused to provide free updates to a program already overpriced. Each time a new InDesign would come out, they made you fork out another $120 or so for an update. Now with InDesign 4, I have grown impatient with their greedy attitude to their longtime users. I cannot update to CS4 without the numbering (since I use it in many critical documents) but am at a loss what to do.
       So my question is this: Does anyone know of any other plug-in that will do this? I am a little surprised that Adobe never added this feature, but it is one I need. I'd appreciate any advice on this.

    I understand your reply, but if you had used the program and realized that there WAS NO development over the years, just minor tweaks (all of them completely invisible to the user) to make it compatible with every new version of InDesign, you would see the reason for the frustration. It is only reasonable to pay for what people have worked to improve. No argument there.
       In any case, the simplest way to describe what is needed is this: Imagine that you want to make an article that has, say 50 items in it, and the number of the items does not (and cannot) be associated with a paragraph tag. Kind of like footnote numbers, which can be inserted anywhere but which can be updated to keep in sequence as new numbers are added or moved. That is what is needed, and that is just what InSequence does.
         I hope this makes sense now.

  • Can you apply "Indent To Here" in a paragraph style (Bullets & Numbering Section)? ID-CS6/MAC

    Hi Adobe comunity,
    As the title of this discussion states, can I apply "Indent to here" within paragraph styles. Please take a look at the attached image which will give you an idea of my dilema.
    Any info on the matter would be greatly appreiated.
    PixelNovae
    MAC 10.6.8
    CS6 / ID: 8.0.1

    Peter,
    Thanks. this is definitely a work around. The only problem with this solution is that if a document has a ton of bullet levels, the designer has to perform and keep up a ton of math in order to do proper levels. Which is cumbersome. At the same time time, the Indent To Here (ITH) command is so much more cleaner and efficient specially when it comes to visual alignment of the when "shape shifting bullets" are used.
    Example:
    i. bullet
    ii. bullet
    iii. bullet
    In the above example, the ITH would create clean copy alignments thorought on all secondary line copy while the -/+ indents would not be able to remain consitent (unless the designer has to tweak every bullet with indent levels). That is, on the above example, the second lines on bullets ii and iii would be irregularly aligned.
    So i take it one cannot input the ITH command onto the "Number Field". Hmmph. lol

  • Exporting Paragraph Styles as CSS in AICS5

    Why can't paragraph style be exported in CSS3, but character styles can?
    I have a number of paragraph styles that I'd like to export.  I'm looking for a fast way to export all the paragraph styles, rather than having to convert them to character styles.  Any ideas?

    Fireworks does not allow multi-page CSS export, the thought
    being (I
    believe) that you would create the design for your main page,
    export it
    as CSS and images, edit CSS and HTML as needed in DW (and it
    will be
    needed) and then generate your site within DW or your
    preferred web
    design application.

  • How to replace a paragraph style with object style

    Hi,
    I am having this issue lately that in paginating a newspaper I have to do all premium post with a Rectangle Border. the problem is that the text is in the grid.
    Is there anyway that, while I add a specific paragraph style to some parts of the text, I can automatically give this text a specific Object Style (like stroke rectangle)
    Does it make sense?
    Thank you very much

    Michael,
    I think that I did not explain myself as I should have. The problem is not really related to links but more of a automatic replacement issue.
    Every time I do this newspaper I include a new text information and the location of the Headers changes in every single case.
    http://i.imgur.com/sgQ2wIK.jpg
    In the link, the blue paragraphs need to be replaced with the respective Header Icons that you see on top and everytime this location of the headers in the newspaper changes due to the different number of posts in each specific category. Now the problem is related on how to autoaticaly replace this string in blue with its respective header
    thanks a lot in advace for all your help

  • Get UID of Paragraph Style that is edited in Paragraph Style Options dialog

    Paragraph styles can be edited in the "Paragraph Style Options" selectable dialog. I am adding an addition style option panel to this dialog. How can I retrieve the UID of the paragraph style that is currently being displayed in this "Paragraph Style Options" dialog? Can this be obtained in the dialog controller of the additional style option panel (I need to obtain this UID to display and store additional style data)?

    Thanks Dirk
    One more thing, continuing on the previous theme. I got the paragraph or character style using something like this (thanks to you)
    InterfacePtr<IWidgetParent> iWidgetParent(this, IID_IWIDGETPARENT);
    if (!iWidgetParent) break;
    InterfacePtr<ISelectableDialogSwitcher> iSelectableDialog((ISelectableDialogSwitcher*)iWidgetParent->QueryParentFor(IID_ISELECTABLEDIALOGSWITCHER));
    if (!iSelectableDialog) break;
    InterfacePtr<IUIDData> iData(iSelectableDialog, IID_IUIDDATA);
    if(iData->GetItemUID()==0) break;
    InterfacePtr<ITextAttributes> textAttributes(iData->GetItemUID(),iData->GetItemDataBase(),IID_ITEXTATTRIBUTES);
    if(!textAttributes) break;
    However when I am trying to get text attributes for Find Change dialog, the IID_IUIDDATA == 0 and therefor returns nothing when trying to get attributes.
    Now if I try this code
    InterfacePtr<ITextAttributes> textAttributes((ITextAttributes*)iWidgetParent->QueryParentFor(IID_ISAVEDTEXTATTRIBUTES));
    then I get the attributes for the find text or change text even when I am using grep dialog.
    Theoretically I could get attributes from IFindChangeOptions interface, and I could figure if grep or text is enabled using GetGrepFlag function, but how do I know if I'm in find or change. It should be easy since they are different bosses like you mentioned previously, but I cant figure how to find that info in dialog.
    Thanks

  • Which paragraph style options break TOC generation?

    Hi,
    I've had a problem with generating tables of contents in InDesign CS3 and which persists in InDesign CS4.
    After much experimenting I've learned that there's something in the paragraph style settings for the headings I want to include in a TOC that prevent them being included. The generated TOC in CS4 is empty. In CS3 it contains two empty paragraphs.
    When I try to create a TOC on the same text, but no style applied to the headings it works.
    So can anyone advise if there's any paragraph style settings (e.g. to do with line and page breaking) that will prevent that paragraph appearing in a TOC?
    Any advice much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Stu

    Hi,
    Correction to my previous message: I was wrong about the TOC generation working for unformatted headings, it doesn't work then either.
    Would some InDesign expert out there be willing to receive a cut-down version of this document to see if they can successfully create a TOC for it? That's probably the easiest way to learn what I'm doing wrong.
    Thanks,
    Stu

  • Paragraph Styles - Don't Work | Buggy?

    I'm on Windows 7 using PS CS6 (not extended) 64bit.
    I have watched several tutorial videos on Adobe and YouTube to see how to properly make and apply paragraph and chracter styles.
    I can select text and make a new paragraph style, but when I select another text layer and the text itself with the type tool and then click on that paragraph style I made in the menu, nothing. It does not apply.
    If I open the style and modify it, it does change the original text layer I made the style from, but only that layer.
    Am I doing something wrong or is this feature horribly buggy?
    Thanks

    Update...
    Some text layers I can select the text and simply click on the paragraph style and it applies, however, for most layers layers I select the text and a + appears next to the paragraph style. If I click the Clear Override icon it sometimes applys the paragraph style, sometimes it does not. Sometimes I have to select the text, choose the Basic Paragraph style and then the newly created paragraph style to get it to work.
    This has to be a bug. Is this only me? Any workarounds?

  • Scripts to insert metadata automatically to document with paragraph style

    Hello,
    I am trying to find a way to automatically insert  metadata into my document through paragraph style in indesign cs5.5.
    This will be myDocument title, the Author name and myDocument description.
    Is there anyone who can help me with this project?
    Thanks.

    Place the script in the following location: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS6\Scripts\startup scripts
    If you close the document the script will automatically put the metadata in your indesign file (use ctrl+w or menu -> file -> close option to close the file)
    Code:
    #targetengine session
    //if you want to test the script for your active document, comment the below line else copy the script in your startup folder
    app.menuActions.itemByName("Close").eventListeners.add("beforeInvoke", function()
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;

    When you log out, uncheck the box to reopen applications. If you're still using 10.7.3, then you will have to uncheck the back with each shutdown or restart.
    10.7.4 update was suppose to fix it that when you uncheck the box, it should remain unchecked for restarts after that.

  • When I rename a paragraph style can I automatically apply it to the paragraphs using the old style?

    I am using RoboHelp 8.
    I want to rename a paragraph style from Body to Bodytext (because the new css we have to use uses Bodytext).
    When I rename the Body style to Bodytext, all my body text switches to the Normal paragraph style.
    Is there no way to automatically apply the Bodytext style to all paragraphs that were using the Body style?
    I am trying to avoid having to apply the style to each paragraph individually which would take forever.
    Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Sorry but there isn't an automatic way.
    You will need to fix this using a multi-file find and replace tool.
    If you look at the HTML you will see something like <p class="body">.
    Search for that and replace with <p class="bodytext">
    Make sure you create a copy of the project before you start.
