Can barely hear out of headphone jack

About a month ago, I went to listen to my music through my headphone jack and could barely hear it. I checked the volume and it was all the way up. I also replaced the headphones and nothing improved. I also use my iPod in my car and am able to plug it into the car via the USB and that seems to work just fine. It is obviously out of the 90 day warranty period, and I don't know what to do.

The hardware warranty is one year. The free telephone support is 90 days.
- Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar

  • I can barely hear callers, bars frequently X-ed out, showing no Sim card

Just recently I can barely hear the caller on my Droid DNA.  I have not damaged my phone in any way.  Also it starts showing no SIM card.  I will restart and then that will fix itself but the volume for the caller barely exists.  My volume is turned up.  I have no problem hearing ring tones, etc and people can hear me.  Also my bars will sometimes just x out and I have to reboot again.  I am sick of not being able to hear my callers. Help!!!!

    A few things to try:
Remove the SIM and reseat it, then restart the phone.
Go to a Verizon store and have them replace the SIM with a new one (it's free)
Try a system cache clear (instructions below)
Set your preferred Network mode to LTE/CDMA
    System cache clear:
    Power down phone
Hold volume up/down & power simultaneously until you see the Boot Mode Selection Menu
Use volume down to navigate to 'Recovery', use volume up to select
Should see screen with triangle and exclamation point next to an Android
Press volume up/down simultaneously to go into system recovery
Use volume rocker to navigate to 'wipe cache' and use power button to select
Once finished, use volume rocker to navigate to 'reboot system now' and use power button to select

Same problem with all headphones and earbuds--just checked settings and Volume Limit was already off--starting to think it's a volume system flaw tied to videos and related sound.   No problem getting plenty of sound volume for music, only videos.

  • How can I get my iPod headphone jack fixed?

I am having issues where I can only hear out of one side of the headphones.  I have tried several different headphones and know the problems is not with them it has to be something with the iPod part where the headphones get plugged in.   Any help is appreciated.

    HI debooz09
you should give to a apple store and tell them here's the apple price http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/ OR just search it on google or on youtube to get more ideas to fix the headphone jack.

    Have you tried other headphones?
What does syncing have to do with the problem?

  • Very Low Volume on Phone Calls - Can barely hear the other person

Just picked up my iPhone 4 at the Apple Store. Tried to make a phone call the the call volume is so low I can barely hear the other person calling.
The speaker volume is not much better. The other person can hear me fine and says the sound is great.
The volume dots are all the way up.
The settings sound voulme under ringer is all the way up.
ipod volume lock is not activated.
Any other settings to check out?

OK now I don't feel like I'm the only one. I've also done a hard reset and still suffer from the same issue.
Since it seems to be the popular question, no the plastic is no longer on my phone.
To call the volume I'm hearing a whisper would be a overstatement. This is a much bigger issue than the antenna. The phone is basically unusable without headphones. Unfortunately I'm not very close to a Apple store to exchange.

  • Sound on my phone has gone so when someone calls me they can hear me but i cant hear them. The ticks cant be heard when you press the keyboard. I've checked the settings and they are ok. can still hear music thru headphones but not without. Any help pls.

    Hey shahbazfromgbr,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I understand you are having issues with sound output on your iPhone 4S. For troubleshooting steps, the following article provides the best information:
iPhone: Can't hear through the receiver or speakers
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1630
    1. Verify that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack, including headsets, headphones, or adapters.
    2. Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is not switched to silent.
    3. While on the Home screen, adjust the volume buttons. If you see the icon below, indicating that headphones are attached, there may be debris or an object lodged in the headset jack:
    4. Check the headset jack. If there is an object lodged in the headset jack that is not easily removed, have the iPhone serviced to remove object.
    5. For Original iPhone: If there is light debris, such as lint, in the headset jack, try connecting a pair of headphones to the headset jack and then remove the headphones. Repeat this several times to remove the debris.
    6. If you have installed a protective film on the display, either ensure that the receiver is not covered or remove the film completely.
    7. Check the receiver mesh (which is on the top front of the device, above the display). If it appears blocked, use a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush to carefully and gently brush away any debris.
    8. If you have paired with a Bluetooth headset that is nearby, either use the headset or turn Bluetooth off (choose Settings > General > Bluetooth).
    9. Restart the iPhone.
    10. If restarting the iPhone doesn't resolve the issue, try restoring the device.
    11. If the issue persists, go to the Service Answer Center - iPhone for information on service.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • I can barely hear people

    Hello everyone!
I have a problem with my new iPhone 5. It's my first iPhone so I'm not too sure what to do.
I can barely hear people. Everyone sais that they hear me perfectly, but I only hear them when it's silence around me. Everything else works perfectly, sounds, music, everything.
I have it for 2 days now, and I didn't take that plastic screen-protector off yet. Could that be it? I saw that it doesn't have coutouts.

If you pause for a second and think about it - while on phone calls, you are covering your only source of sound/voice directly with a protective layer of plastic. How are you supposed to hear the other person talk? It obvously wont hinder the music audio etc. since that is coming out from the bottom of the phone which is not covered with plastic.
Take the plastic off and it will solve your problem. btw, why anyone would make and receive phone calls with the plastic sheet on the phone is beyond my limited ability to comprehend how things function.

She must have signed into her own Apple ID on your iPad in order to sync her content from iTunes so try this and see if it works.
Settings>Store>Apple ID. See if your ID is showing in there and if it isn't - tap on her ID, sign out and then sign in with yours.
You should not be syncing to to different iTunes libraries. The iPad can only sync with one iTunes library without erasing the the content on it if you decide to sync to another iTunes library.

    Hi saintmary82,
If you are having a hard time hearing people through the receiver, take a look at the article below for some suggestions to get it sorted out. Start with cleaning the receiver and making sure your iPhone is up to date. If you continue to have issues, then you may want to contact Apple Support for further assistance.

I have a recently acquired iphone 4s and despite having good hearing and the volume up to max can barely hear who ever I am speaking to. WHat is wrong with the phone?

The plastic cover was removed before I left the store and I have moved the volume up and down during, before and after phone calls. Have tried it in protective case and out of it. Impossible to hear calls unless phone is on speaker. There seems to be lots of comments re this. Is it a significant flaw? Can I fix it?

  • How come some podcasts are loud while others I can barely hear?

I enjoy listening to podcasts while at work.  I work in a place that does not allow head phones nor does it allow for a stereo.  I use a small iHome speaker. The Red Eye Radio podcast has a perfect volume level, while the Billy Cunningham podcast, Bill Burr, and Stuff you should Know podcasts can barely hear at full volume. How come the volume is so different from show to show.  Can't there be some kind of podcast/broadcast standard.  I enjoy all these programs but find myself only listening to the ones I can hear.
