Can burn DVD but no playback.

After ripping and burning a movie DVD, I can play it on my DVD player, but, not on my 17" iMac. Rented DVD's play OK. Media?

You're posting in the Intel based iMac forum, but your signature only lists a G4 - is that what you're experiencing a problem with?
If that is the case, you might get more knowledgeable answers in the forum for G4's:
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=137
In the meantime, you might want to check your Mac's media capabilities under System Profiler; I remember that the older Macs were extremely particular and finicky about reading +R vs. -R disks.

  • Can burn DVD but not CD

I don't have any problem burning DVD's using iDVD, but I can't burn a CD using iTunes. It goes through the whole process, checking media, initalizing, burning, etc. then iTunes plays that little doo doo doo sound saying it's done, but then I hear a sound from the burning devise, like an err err err. I can't eject the disc unless I force quit iTunes. When I look at the disc I can see a burned area, so I put it back in the Mac and it says the disc is blank, so I put it in my Pioneer stereo player to get a second opinion and it says the disc is blank too.
I'm trying to figure out if this is a software or a hardware problem.
Or is it possible the blank CDs I have are bad? (CD-R 74 min 650 mb) I've tried changing the settings in iTunes preferences but it still doesn't work and I've thrown away 7 CDs so far.
I have a PowerMac G5 with OSX 10.4.4, Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A burner and iTunes 6.0.2
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

It varies by the drive model, not by the OS. So there's no brand that works better with Mac OS X, per se, but rather your current brand may not work well in your iMac's drive where another brand might work better. I've had good luck with Maxell and bad luck with Memorex, but that might not be the case with the drive in your iMac. Try a disk or two of some other brand and see if that works better.
If another brand doesn't work better, try just a Finder burn to see if the problem is with burning through iTunes or burning in general. If the Finder burn also fails, then the iMac's drive might be dirty (try a lens cleaning disk) or defective.
    Good luck.

  • Can't burn CDs (but can burn DVDs!!) Satellite U400-20v

    hi,
I have a satellite u400-20v. There was no problem at first to read or burn a CD or DVD but after I setup windows 7 ultimate. my cd rom now can read both CDs and DVDs and can burn DVDs but can't burn CDs (data or audio). The burner gives me an error msg as soon as it begins writing the  cd. My optical drive is called Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ862AS ATA device (at the device manger).
    Please help
    Thanx

iTunes can be a bit flaky on 64 bit Vista since it's not supported but it has been known to work.
Try updating your CD/DVD drivers here -> http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.cfm
Also, make sure the your other firmware & drivers are up to date.

  • MacPro will burn dvds but won't burn blu-rays anymore?

I've been using Compressor (ver. 3) to burn blu-rays and dvds of my movie for several months just fine.  A few days ago after opening my blu-ray project in Compressor it did the usual: tray opens and it says "Please insert blu-ray media…"  I put a blank disk in (the same kind I've been using all along) and pushed the keyboard eject button to close the tray but it didn't move.  I manually pushed the tray closed and I could hear it spin up several times and then it spit the disk back out.  I repeated this several times with no luck.  I tried different blu-ray media (didn't work).  I tried burning a dvd and it DID work, so I'm thinking it's not the blu-ray drive.  However I tried burning with Disk Utility and it wouldn't work.  I also tried to make a blu-ray burn folder and it wouldn't work.  It doesn't make sense that it can burn dvds but not blu-rays.
I'm not sure what else to do.  I haven't upgraded (still on Lion).  Would upgrading to Mavericks fix this?  Everything's been working great so I didn't want to upgrade and mess it all up.  I fear taking it to an Apple Store will cost more than purchasing a new blu-ray burner.
Any thoughts or advice?  Thank you for your help!

    Upgrade to Yosemite.

Can burn DVD-RWs but not R's. In fact, a blank R will not even show up in Disk Utility or Toast 6. Can anyone help me? Ronda? Duane? John?
BTW, unit has been fixed twice-once for logic board, another time for optical drive.

Tried two different brands. Will try another brand. Created new user, tried it under that as well with new prefs. No luck.

  • Can't burn cds but I can burn dvds?

I cant seem to burn cds anymore but I can burn dvds I have tried several different brands but nothing seems to work are there different lazers for cd and dvd?

Yes, in many drives there are different lasers for CDs and DVDs. It is not uncommon to have one type fail and the other keep working fine.
Be sure the media you are using are the correct speed range for the drive capabilities. For example, 8x media will not be correctly recognized by a 2x-capable drive. It may report "calibration error" or tell you the capacity of the media is ridiculously large or small, or ask you to erase non-erasable media.

  • HELP! MacBook Pro cant recognise or burn DVDs but only CDs, and...

    Hi all
I noticed that there many of you have the same problem, but I really need some advice here, my MacBook Pro cant recognise or burn DVDs but only CDs, well actually occasionally it does recognise the DVDs then it burn but cannot write (on Toast), also in many other apps, like iDVD or DVDSP, it does run well on the first part of the burning but then failed at the end, with all kinda diff error msg. I have tried using many diff brands of disc too, inc verbatim.
So I borrowed my friends external DVD writer (actually a cheapy one with no brand), when I tried to burn using the external then an error msg comes up and says the writer cannot recognise the disc.
I dont wana get the MBP to repair but just wana get a external DVD writer to solve the problem, cos i need to use my computer and dont have a replacement mac, but now I am worry if the problem i now having is a system problem or just hardware, not sure if it is because the DVD writer i borrow is cheapy so it doesnt cope with mac, or just my MBP have system error that cant burn DVDs...
But my MBP can burn CDs so it is not a hardware problem? and if that is a system problem so even I buy a new DVD writer wont solve the problem?
btw, I have tried many solving methods like rewriting permission, reset PVRAM, etc
    PLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS HELP

I'm having the same problem you are on my 2.4GHZ Core2Duo MBP running 10.5.2. It will sometimes recognize DVDs, sometimes not... it chuggs and clunks and then spits the disc out. If i re-insert it a view times it will show up on the desktop. I get failures from Toast as well as iDVD. If i keep trying i have been able to burn files onto a disc with the finder, but then the burner fails during the verification. If put the disc back in the contents appear to be correct (after a quick look). Burning CD-Rs seems to be working fine, that with the occasional DVD write seems to point away from the HW. I am trying with both Memorex DVD+RW and Verbatim DVD-Rs...
I have tried the command/option-PR reset combo with no luck.
    Any ideas?
    thanks,

  • Can't burn DVD but image plays just fine in Apple DVD player

I can make a DVD and save it as an image, which DVD player will play flawlessly. I just can't burn it to a DVD. It fails continuously. Maybe it's my media? Can anyone recommend media known to work well in a MacBook Pro (last version)? Any other suggestions? thanks.

It is easy to burn from a disk image, and it is better because all the media needed is already within the disk image file. It doesn't have to search, locate and pull in the media for the burn. There are many places for errors to occur. If you have successfully created a disk image file, just burn from that.
Also, a disk image file is self-contained. You can safely delete both the original iDVD project and the original iMovie used to make it if you are finished editing them. Because the disk image file is small, you will save drive space. You can also burn a new DVD disk of that project any time in the future, without having to remember if you moved the original media, or renamed anything used in that project. Of course, you cannot edit a disk image, but you can't edit a burned DVD disk either.
Many users here report that DVD-R disks are better and play in more types of set-top players. Others think DVD+R disks work fine. I always use Verbatim DVD-R, burn at 4x or less, create a disk image file of all my iDVD projects and I have never had a burn issue.

  • Superdrive can read and burn dvds but CANNOT read or burn CDs??

My DVR-107D can read and burn DVD's, but all of a sudden it cannot even read or mount a cd. It also cannot burn CD's. I've run 2 cleaning discs, and even manually cleaned the lens. I feel it may be a software issue at this point... Any ideas?? Finder is set to open CDs and DVDs to the desktop.

    Hi
There are two lenses in the drive. It is possible for one to fail while the other still functions. I manually cleaning the lenses made no difference, it is quite possible that aspect of the drive is dead.
You may want to try from a different admin User account (and with a third party app such as Toast, in addition to Finder, iTunes, iPhoto, Disc Utility)

  • Can burn CDs but not DVDs

My CD/DVD drive worked fine until 3 weeks ago.  I tried to burn home movies to DVD using Nero and it stopped burning.  I restored my computer to factory condition and reinstalled Nero.  No help.  I bought a newer version of Nero and switched from Sony DVDs to Verbatim.  No help.  Then I discovered that I can send files to my Drive E: and burn CDs but not DVDs.
I downloaded all the Microsoft updates.  I have recovery discs but that is a lot of work all over again when I'm not even sure it will help.  I have 2 external drives where I keep my files and backup but I would still need to setup email and reinstall my programs.
I was about ready to buy a new drive for the computer when I saw on the internet that other people have this problem too.  I would really rather get the drive I have working.

    Hi,
Sounds like hardware problem, not software. Please clean the lens first, please try:

  • Subtitles suddenly displaying by default on burned DVD but not in simulator

Hello, subtitles which normally did not display until they were selected 'on' from a menu choice in the DVD are suddenly automatically being displayed by default when played on a stand alone DVD player for a television.
The subtitles however do not show up by default in the DVD Studio Pro simulator nor when I play from a 'build' folder using the Mac DVD player. Also, burned DVD's do not display the subtitles by default on two of my Macintosh systems when played with DVD Player (Macbook Pro and Powerbook G4 both running Leopard) yet the subtitles do display by default on a stand alone DVD player.
I have 'force display' off on the subtitle track (applied to whole subtitle stream).
I created brand new builds and can't figure out why this is suddenly occurring. I opened up very old projects and rebuilt them and they exhibit the same problems.
Anyone with any ideas? I recently upgraded from 10.4.11 to Leopard - is it possible that that would have caused the problem. Thank you.

I have not changed any settings on my set top Panasonic DVD player. The set top box can display subtitles but typically only does so when I choose it from a menu. This just started happening 2 days ago.
The same is occurring on another person's stand alone DVD player so I am fairly certain something is going on with the DVD build. The only major change I did recently was upgrade to Leopard and install the Apple software updates. There doesn't seem to be a preference or setting to display all subtitles in DVD Studio Pro - I am at a loss why this is doing this even with older projects that have worked perfectly and not been modified (just rebuilt and burned).

  • Mac can't read Mac burned DVD but a PC can. Why?

Need a bit of help, I have an archive DVD that was burned a couple of months ago. After the burn I checked to make sure all files were readable. ejected it and popped it back in and had no problems.
This morning popped it in and it wont mount. This was a working DVD a couple months ago. It has no scratches or finger prints.
It will not mount on any macs.
    MacBook Pro
    Mac Pro
    G4
    G5
    imac and so on
here is the kicker, it WILL mount on a PC.
    any thoughts or suggestions?

Had the same trouble a few weeks ago. Try repairing Permissions on your System drive with Disk Utility and restarting. That solved the problem for me.

  • IDVD Finishes Burning DVD, but DVD is not recognizable?

    Hello,
I'm working on a big school project and tried to use iDVD to burn a 5 minute project I made in iMovie to a DVD. I do not have a SuperDrive so I used the Plextor PX-740UF external DVD burner. Everything appeared to be working fine with the DVD-burn process, however at the end it said "Errors found during disc burn" or something to that effect, and then it said "Error during multiplex burning" or something to that effect. I tried this DVD in both of my DVD players on different TV's - it didn't work. When I put it in my Mac mini Combo Drive it wouldn't work, didn't appear on the Desktop, and I had to restart my computer to get it to eject. I tried again and no error message occurred, the DVD was ejected from the Plextor device... but iDVD froze with the message "DVD burned successfully". This disc would not work in a DVD player either. Note that these were both burned with a FireWire connection.
Do you know what I did wrong or where the fault lies?
    Thank you,
    Mitch

    Hi Mitchell
No I don't but I know how I would go on.
    a. You are using iDVD 5 then make a disk image (File menu and down)
    b. When You got this test it with Apple DVD-player. OK ?
    c. Then there has to been a program to Your ext DVD-burner. Can it be set
to make a DVD disk. If so then use it and the disk image You just did do.
(If not there are buy-programs. I use Roxio Toast™ and like it very much)
on the new DVD there should only be two folders:
    - audio_TS (and this is empty and has to be there anyhow)
    - video_TS

  • Burned disc, but video playback pulses. please help?

So i just burned a project from DVDSP.
Shot in 24f on the Canon A1, then exported to compressor using the
HD DVD: H.264 for DVD Studio Pro 60 minutes preset.
I setup the whole DVDSP system to do this, burned the project onto CD and everything went successful.
Then when i went to play it back on my comp, the video is laggy or pulses.
Its like its skipping frames or something.
    What am i doing wrong?
I tested it on all my mac computers and all the same result.
iMac G5, Macbook, and Mac Pro with major upgrades.

Without knowing all the settings you used both in sequence presets in the FCP timeline and how you set things in Compressor it would be difficult to really troubleshoot but, it sounds as if you have a frame-rate mismatch somewhere.
Canon's 24F feature is where it's trying to simulate a progressive look, just as the Sony Z1/FX1 do with Cineframe. It's always been a tricky thing to get the final output from these cameras trying to simulate the progressive look in post.
The only suggestion I can make is to go back to the settings in Compressor and look at the actual frame-rate that was selected. If frame controls were set to automatic you may need to change that to "on" and experiment with various frame-rate outputs to see what looks best.

  • BD-203 available to burn DVD but not BDR

    Greetings all...
I am working on a project that is going out in DVD and BD and have come across an slight problem.  I am using Encore CS4 and I have a regular Pioneer DVD-R drive and the BD 203 drive which shows up as the default.  (Win XP 4 GB RAM)  When I go to burn a DVD-R Encore defaults to the BD drive and burns just great, but as soon as I switch to a BD project the burn panel says that there are no drives available.  I have rebooted, come back a later day, barked at the moon and did the wiggly dance to help.  I am able to burn to the drive with the software that came with the drive, so for the time being I am making an .iso and then burning it later, just wondering what is going on really...
It has worked in the past, and I don't know what could have changed it.  Wondering if anyone has any ideas...

It has worked in the past, and I don't know what could have changed it.  Wondering if anyone has any ideas...
Does this burner require a driver? Is it up to date? Things like simple OS updates can render many drivers obsolete. Is the burner's firmware up to date?
and did the wiggly dance to help
I've found that often doing the "wiggly dance" BEFORE the barking at the Moon, sometimes does the trick...
Going back to the serious part, if there is no driver, and the firmware IS up to date, I'd go into System>Hardware>Device Manager, and remove the BD burner, then reboot and let Windows find and install it again. This has cleared up some similar issues for others.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
