Can burn DVD-RWs, but not DVD-R's

Can burn DVD-RWs but not R's. In fact, a blank R will not even show up in Disk Utility or Toast 6. Can anyone help me? Ronda? Duane? John?
BTW, unit has been fixed twice-once for logic board, another time for optical drive.

Tried two different brands. Will try another brand. Created new user, tried it under that as well with new prefs. No luck.

  • IMac plays commercial DVD/CDs, but not DVD-Rs

My iMac has been exuding random acts of weirdness over the last couple of months.
Today I find that my Superdrive won't accept DVD-Rs, blank or otherwise. Yes, I have the Matshita UJ-846 and I tried the usual fixes (safeboot, reset PRAM, changed DVD/CD settings to ignore, reset PMU, ran the diagnostic cd and even repaired the HD permissions.)
    Anyone got any ideas?

I don't think this has anything to do with brand. I could see a few disks not working, but dozens?
But to test your theory I tried some movies burned on Fujifilm and Maxell DVD-Rs and none of them worked.

  • Can Burn BD-RE, But NOT BD-R  - How Fix?

The problem I'm having is, I believe, pretty well exemplified in the query of the title of this thread.
I'm using all iterations of the CS 5.0 series (I have 5.5, but haven't installed it yet), with encoding
done in AME, video files encoded in m4v and audio in wave.  Straight foward disc, with
only one subject, and no menues.  Burner is Pioneer BDR-202.  I am not identifying the
Boxx Computer and its components, since it has operated flawlessly for the last two years
since I purchased it, until now.  All programs are up to date, including CS-5, as outlined below.
All program and data files are about a year old, backed up on external hard drives.  When originally
run a year ago, both BD-RE and BD-R discs were produced with no issues.
But now, when everything is re-installed from the back-up, this problem appears.  If Encore is set up to produce
four discs, and the first disc inserted for burning is BD-RE, the disc is produced wonderfully, but
if a BD-R is next inserted, with the window entitled "Note", reading "Please insert disc for next copy
(2 of 4)", the disc is inserted, the drawer closed, and "OK" is clicked, then another window appears
entitled "Warning", and reads "Device is not ready."
That's it.  I am totally stymied, am prohibited from reproducing ANY of many saved files on BD,
and of course would not even think of attempting to produce anything new.  Unless someone here
has a solution, my business is shut down for the time being, short of purchasing an Apple, which
maybe I should have done in the first place, despite my horrible experience with that company ten
years ago.  Excuse me, all I can say is that I would be most grateful for any viable (or even any "unviable" !
suggestions that any of you might have!!!!!

Ramesh, Stan, Bruce, and Bill - again, thank you for your
efforts!  I am back in business again, after spending
more than 140 hours on this abomination (I only got
on these boards out of desperation - I should have
been here much sooner, and will, the next!).
THE PROBLEM IS THE BLASTED, TRUSTED,
    SUPPOSEDLY INFALLIBLE VERBATIM.  Ramesh,
you hit the nail on the head.  And the comment above
re something must have been different - it was - all of
the Verbatim BD-Rs I'd been using came out of the
same just newly opened Verbatim packages.
As I indicated above, I tested the Verbatims from
two shipments secured at different times - they
both couldn't be defective, could they - wrong,
    they apparently were!
Thanks for your suggestions re imgburn, what a
wonderful device, and I'll be using it from now
    on.
Utilizing imgburn, I burned a flawless Verbatim BD-RW,
then placed a Verbatim BD-R in the same burner, clicked,
and an imgburn window came up, stating:
"Device Not Ready (Incompatible Medium Installed)
If you're sure there is a blank device in the drive,
try again in a few seconds."
Well, it mattered not at all how many tries with how
many Verbatim BD-Rs from those two packages.
Soooooo, I then tried an individually wrapped BD-R
package, and then another, and they both recorded
    flawlessly.
The two garbage stacks/packages of Verbatim
BD-Rs (which cost me $250 EACH, because they
are such a premium product, blank, printable
    faces) can't be returned, even
though I have the receipts someplace for my tax
records, since they were purchased over a year ago -
they were just about the last of my inventory.
By the way, both defective stacks' packaging indicated
that they could be recorded at up to X6.
The individually wrapped BD-Rs I tried out succcessfully
were indicated to be X2, as are both of my Pioneer
    burners.
Incidentally, one anomaly re my Encore - "Write Speed"
was ALWAYS greyed out (never had been before) since
I had been having this problem, and after installation
and utilization of imgburn, indicated the appropriate X2
    for the Pioneer burners.
Needless to say, I am done forever with Verbatim, and
will post later today one more new thread about that
product - for the moment, I am now running out the door
to my next appointment, and can again return to my
    life!

  • Can burn CDs but not DVDs

My CD/DVD drive worked fine until 3 weeks ago.  I tried to burn home movies to DVD using Nero and it stopped burning.  I restored my computer to factory condition and reinstalled Nero.  No help.  I bought a newer version of Nero and switched from Sony DVDs to Verbatim.  No help.  Then I discovered that I can send files to my Drive E: and burn CDs but not DVDs.
I downloaded all the Microsoft updates.  I have recovery discs but that is a lot of work all over again when I'm not even sure it will help.  I have 2 external drives where I keep my files and backup but I would still need to setup email and reinstall my programs.
I was about ready to buy a new drive for the computer when I saw on the internet that other people have this problem too.  I would really rather get the drive I have working.

    Hi,
Sounds like hardware problem, not software. Please clean the lens first, please try:

  • CDs work but not DVDs "device failed to calibrate laser power level for med

    Hi
I've been having a problem with my disc drive.
I can burn CDs but not DVDs. Have OS 10.5.6.
While trying to burn an error message comes up saying
"This disc can't be burned because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media?
I tried to go into Apps - Utilities - Disk utilities and repair, but this message still shows up and refuses to burn anything even in Toast.
Please help. Any advice would be valuable. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try the brands you suggested.
I don't think the drive may be dirty, because wouldn't the CDs not work as well?
Not necessarily. Different lasers, different power levels, etc.
It's really a dual drive: CD and DVD. Almost two separate devices with a common motor and platen, etc.
You can get a cleaning CD from RadioShack and elsewhere. Get the dry one with the small brushes. Works fine on everything but a notebook.

  • Sound on DVD players, but not computer??

I had to switch from my mac to a PC in order to burn a DVD. I can get the DVD to work in a regular DVD player, but in PC's there is Video but no Sound?
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks All!

I had the same bizarre problem. Burned DVDs would play with sound on commercial DVD players, but not on my PowerBook through the DVD Player application. Attempting to solve the problem, I used Handbrake to rip the DVDs. The ripped files would play fine with sound if placed on my 5G iPod, but not on my Mac through QuickTime (still video only, no sound). This fixed the probem: launch Audio MIDI Setup (it is in your Utilities folder) and check the volume output sliders. One of mine was set to zero output, even though I had never before launched Audio MIDI Setup. I moved the output slider controls to maximum. Problem solved. Good luck.

  • DVD Drive issues, plays CDs but not DVD data or regular - Satellite (unknown series type)

I tried to update the firmware but ran into some strange issues. First of all according to google, the drive is manufactured by Panasonic. Toshiba doesn't make their own drives? For this reason I wonder if it is improperly detecting the drive make/model.
Anyways I downloaded the firmware update for it, version 1.03. It is a MAT**bleep**A UJDA760 (going from memory, model may be slightly diff like UDJA). When I run the firmware update it doesn't detect the drive at all and says it is for a THINKPAD?? Weird...
Also, if you have a link to a guide for removing this drive I would appreciate it. I want to verify that windows is detecting the model/maker correctly. It is not one of the simple hotswap types, it looks like I have to remove at least the entire bottom of the laptop.
I am working on this for a client, I do tech repair on craigslist but my laptop hardware expertise is limited most of my experience is with desktops.

Typically if the optical drive can read CDs but not DVDs (or vice versa), there has been a hardware failure of the DVD or CD circuitry.  Drivers/firmware aren't going to solve the problem, only replacement of the drive.

  • Scripts works in Simulator and Apple DVD player but not on TV

I have a basic project with two different tracks.
The first one is video and audio. Plays "as is".
The second has video, two audio and one subtitle. Depending on which button, the second Track should be played with different audio and with/without subtitles.
(I use GPRM 1 to set the subs stream, GPRM 2 for the audio and GPRM 3 for menu button navigation).
On the second Track I have a pre-script that sets the streams depending on the value of GPRM 1 and 2.
Works fine in Simulator and in Apple DVD player, but not on the stand-alone player.
Any idea what might be the issue here?
    in short:
Button 1: Play Track 1 "as is" (audio 1, no subs)
Button 2: Play Track 2, audio 1, subs on
Button 3: Play Track 2, audio 2, subs off
Button 4: Play Track 2, "as is" (audio 1, subs off)
Menu button and End Jump should go to the corresponding menu button.
    Many thanks for your help.

It is part personal preference, part artistic, part what makes the user experience the best so there may not be one "right" answer and I have often made menus one way than changed them when viewing the DVD for something that seemed to work better.
Looking at you description I started playing with some ideas in my head and started typing them, then changed what I was writing
It sounds like you want chapter selections for both track 1 and track 2? If so it may make sense to have the initial menu have Track 1 and Track 2 buttons which then link to sub menus where there is "Play All," selections for each section of each movie and one last button for the preferences.
Alternatively you could also place the preferences selection button on the main menu, though since Track 1 does not sound like it really has preferences you need to make sure that users do not become confused and think they have turned something on/off and are not seeing these options when they thought they selected them when they play back Track 1.
Also with 6 to 8 chapter markers you may be getting close to the point where scripting could make it easier if your selections are just to play the sections - in other words for track 2 four stories take care of the combinations Audio 1/Sub Off, Audio 1 Subs On, Audio 2 Subs Off, Audio 2 Sub On. If the chapter selection starts the track a scene then plays through you can target chapter markers in the story so 4 stories takes care of it. If you are just playing sections you would need 4 x 6 or 8 chapters - 24 or 32 stories roughly. But it is actually fairly quick to do - just set up the intial Play All with all subtitles and audio selections unchecked except for "1" then copy from there. Probably should take under 10-15 minutes or so
Put a real quick thing together for a quick view of the tracks. I can flesh it out more if you like.
    http://www.dvdstepbystep.com/081107Sub.dmg
The main menu will be the title menu, then the sub-menus (including the set up menus) can be placed in the same VTS as the applicable tracks which can help a bit with DVD performance speed. Since there is 6 to 8 chapter markers on a track each of the main sub-menus would have 8-10 buttons which can work in the design.

Not necessarily, the drive uses a different laser to read DVDs.
    1. Reset your Mac's PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM
    2. Clean the drive with a DVD lens cleaner?

My movies and music videos won't show up on my computer screen, I can hear the sound but not see the video how do I fix this? Hi @anthony7722 ,
Thank you for your query, I will do my best to help!
I grasp that you uninstalled the Intel graphic driver and the catalyst control.  You reinstalled the Intel driver and now you can view and hear videos on the Internet but you are unable to set the resolution as high as previously.
When I checked the specifications for your notebook I see that you have switchable graphics.
Here are two links that I believe will help.
Overview of Switchable Graphics or Dual GPUs
Switchable Graphics on Notebooks Configured with Intel and ATI GPUs
Here is a link to HP Pavilion dv7-6150eb Entertainment Notebook PC Drivers
    Please try this process.
    1. Download the chipset driver, and both graphic drivers and save them  but do not install them yet
2, Delete the chipset driver and install the updated one.
    3. restart your notebook
4.Delete the Intel driver and install the updated one
    5. restart your notebook
    6. Delete the AMD driver and install the updated driver.
You should now have a Catalyst Control Center.
This should now allow you to use the higher graphic card which should support the higher resolution.
    I hope this helped.

My guess is they don't care. Most likely they're illiterate and don't know what a colon is for. They probably think it's a little-used character. Remember: these are the people who don't know the difference between "deprecate" and "depreciate".
I have the same colon problem as you do. But it's not the biggest problem I have encountered in Lion. If it was only that I'd be Mr. Delighted with Lion. There's worse than having a colon - uh -  that won't cooperate. A lot worse, in Lion.
