I have a Time Capsule setup that works great. I have several Macs that run fine on the network. I have one older Power PC that will connect to the Time Capsule's guest network but not the main network despite having the correct password. Every time I try it says "connection failed." Ideas?

This information tells you that the Power Mac is not capable of connecting to a network using WPA2 Personal encryption.
Since we've drifted far away from a potential Time Capsule issue at this point, your best option will be to post in one of the Power Mac forums to see if there might be a way to upgrade the operating system to a level where it would support WPA2 Personal encryption.

Apple assumes that you will be connecting the Time Capsule to a simple modem....and.....that the Time Capsule is configured as a router to provide DHCP and NAT services for the network.
The Guest Network cannot be enabled correctly unless the Time Capsule is in charge of DHCP and NAT services on the network.
Another way of saying the same thing is that the Guest Network will not operate correctly if the Time Capsule is configured in Bridge Mode or DHCP Only.

Internet works on guest but not main network

We have an airport extreme connected to a Dsl modem. The internet works fine when connected to the guest network but when connected to the main network the browser just times out and says server is not responding (for any website we try). Same thing on several computers (iMac, 2 different MacBook Pros).
The internet settings look the same for both guest and main network so I don't understand why one would work and not the other.
I tried getting rid of the guest network but the main network still failed to load webpages (even though it appears to be connected to internet).

Are you connecting the AirPort Extreme to a simple modem (it will only have one ethernet port), or is the device a gateway (combination modem/router with 3-4 ethernet ports)?

Cannot connect to the secure network but can to the guest network

I have three computers in my home, all Apple. One is an iMac with 10.5 installed, another is a powerbook g4 17" with 10.5 installed and the third is an old titanium powerbook g4 15" with 10.4 installed. All of them have the newest versions of software.
I just bought a new time capsule and that has the newest firmware upgrade installed. I set the time capsule up with a secure WPA Personal network and a guest network with no password. I can connect to the secure network on the iMac and the 17" powerbook but the titanium powerbook cannot even see the secure network or connect to it if I enter it and put in the correct password. However the titanium powerbook can see and connect to the guest network.
Please help, I need to be able to print from the titanium powerbook to an ethernet printer connected to the time capsule.
I've tried adding a wireless client with no password in airport utility thinking I could connect the titanium powerbook that way and that does not work either.

Actually I have figured it out. I guess the titanium powerbooks cannot do WPA encryption, only WEP but I cannot choose WEP in the airport utility nor do I want to. I did find a work around though.
In airport utility I went to the base station menu and clicked on "equivalent network password" and it shows the WPA password and then something called "WPA Pre-Shared Key". The key is a 64 character password but I tried it on the titanium powerbook and it worked!

I have a iBookG4 and have moved to a new apt with a wireless network run off a dell router/ comcast. My roommates have both Macs and PCs and can connect with no problems. I found the network on my airport and put in the password, joined network no problem, but cannot connect to the internet. The Airport status is yellow and says that Airport has self assigned IP address and cannot connect to the internet. I can connect fine to other open networks in the area so its not my computer. I tried to copy the IP address from my roommate manually to the network settings but that didn't work either. What am I doing wrong? No one here seems to recall how they set up the network and I am paying for a network I can't access. Please help!!!

Does the dell router have an access list set-up?
With an access list (depending on the router) it can be set-up to allow access for only certain MAC addresses. If your MAC address isn't in the list, you'll not get on.
Usually the router will have an IP address itself of 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.0.1 - depends on the router. You should be able to determine it from the IP address your computers are getting. Try getting someone to connect to this through a browser, and check/change the configuration of the router directly.

Can connect to wireless network but not to internet

Ok, so I bought a new AEBS and have finally managed to get it set up with my cable modem, and with security on so that the light is green, and not amber... the only problem now is that although I can connect to the wireless network that i have created using the base station, I cannot connect to the internet through it using my MacBook.
I don't have problem connecting my iMac to the net wirelessly using the base unit so am confused.
Anyone got any ideas?

I have three desktop computers wired to the router and a laptop that I connect using wireless. One of my computers went to the shop. Now, I can't get it to connect to the network, but I can access the Internet with a browser and with an FTP Client. The other computers still talk to each other fine. I reconfigured the problem desktop but no joy. Note that I cannot access the router at 192.168.1.1 from any computer. I unplugged the router for 30 seconds and replugged it... with no change. What's my next step? Thanks in advance for any help. New info. I can access the router by using Internet Explorer. And There is no light on the front panel indicating that the problem computer is connected ... even though I'm accessing the modem/Internet with it.

Lower down the Ethernet Adapter card speed from Auto to 10 Half Duplex ...
Also change the cable or the port in the routers back side ....
See if light is present on one ....

My Guest network looks OK inTC, but just hangs when I try to access it from my iPhone.
Also my TC screen seems 'blocky' when redrawing and there is no screen with stars!
I'm on Yosemite with a new TC and a new iMac 27"

I have a cable feed to the property into the cable company's router. From there, a network cable into the TC, and then a feed from the TC to the iMac.
That means the TC is in bridge mode and you cannot use guest wireless.. it looks like you can but it actually will not work. Therefore the iphone must connect to the main wireless network.. OR if your cable router is wireless .. most are.. use that for guest wireless network.
As I said, the computer is wired in- my printer is wireless.
But your iphone is using wireless. Only you cannot use guest in your setup.. so use wireless as explained above.
There is a big issue now between Yosemite, iOS 8 and the Airport router.

For that reason I want you to stop the TC from being able to swap channel at 2.4ghz.. whenever it wants to..
The setting is under wireless options.
Change from Automatic, to 11, 8 or 6, in that order.. as they tend to be less used.. 1 and 6 actually are the most overused.
In my previous iMac and TC , the "enter time machine' instruction had a black space background. The current one is blobs of blurred colour which goes into blocky squares when I move the mouse over it.
Ahh.. I see. I will have to boot my one computer that runs yosemite.. I have been keeping it turned off as it causes network havoc.
I might get Bob to comment as he is running Yosemite as main OS now.. and it might be plain sailing for him.

Connecting to guest network with iPhone ios5

After upgrading to iOS 5 my iPhone doesn´t work on the guest network on my Time Capsule (It connects, but internet won´t work). The reason seems to be that the assigned IP is not in the range defined for the guest network (but rather in the ip-range for my main network). Both my Macs and ipads get the right ip-address. I`ve tried this with 3 different iphones.
All phones worked on the guest network before upgrading, and still works when I connect to my main wi-fi network.

Did you perform a full power cycle and reset of your modem as follows?
Push the reset button on the modem
Power off the modem
Pull the battery if it is easily accessible
Power down all other devices on your network, order is not important
Wait 30 minutes ( It sometimes takes even longer for the equipment back at the cable company to fully reset so that it will issue you a totally new fresh connection. The cable company will never admit this.)
Reinstall the battery if you pulled it from the modem
Power up the modem and let it run by itself for 3-4 minutes
Start up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for 3-4 minutes so that it will fully associate with the modem
Start each device up on the network one at a time about a minute apart
Check for operation.

I am the network admin at a medium sized church. I want to setup 5 airport express routers our building. The private network has a windows server that will act as the dhcp server and i will be enabling the guest network as a public wifi network for a parishioners and guests. I know the max number of users is spec’d at 50 so my questions are as follows: 1 does the 5 user spec actually hold up? 2: does only apply if the airport express is acting as a dhcp server or if it is just passing ip addresses through? 3: does the 50 connections include the guest network as well as the main/private or is it 50 for the main and 50 for the guest?

Sorry, no. That model Express can't create a "guest network". To do that you will need a current production model Express, or recent model Extreme or Time Capsule.

HT4259 Can a wireless guest network be extended?

Our church has two Airport Extreme Model A1354. Our main wireless network, called FCCAK, is extended just fine throughout the building. Our Guest network, called FCCAK Guest, is not reaching the basement, and it looks like that network is not being transmitted at all from the extender Router. The Airport Extreme Utility has no check box on the guest network Tab to "extend this network." Can we extend two wireless networks using our two Airport Extreme routers? We bought both of these at the same time in March 2010.

Unfortunately it is not possible to extend the guest network from an Airport, it is only possible to extend the "main" network.

How come I can connect to this network?

I have a closed WDS network with two Airports,. On the main Airport I use Access Control to help keep unauthorized devices from connecting to it. In the past, whenever I've purchased a new device (like a ROKU) or if a friend brought over a MBP for the first time, I'd have to add their wireless addresses into Access Control or those devices could not connect. But today when I received my iPad, I was able to connect to the network without having to add any information into Access Control? I'm just wondering why that is? Why is this iPad able to connect to the network without being listed as a device that has access to the network? Oh, and while I'm on the subject, where do you find the wireless address for the iPad?

Are you reporting the symptom of not being able to connect out of both accounts? Sorry, I read it that you wanted to prevent access from one account.
How are you connected to the internet? Wired or wireless? Home internet provider?
What does Network Utility report from each account on the interface in question?
If it's wired unless it is PPOE or some other method that requires a name/password on the account the networking settings are usually computer-wide versus account specific.
Wireless accounts more often have authentication provisions. If you put the wireless router name and password into the Network Control panel it will accessible to all accounts, but if the user types in the password when prompted in their account it will be accessible to that user only. Also some advanced (WAP2) wireless networks require things like security certificates to work and they can be installed on a per account basis.

Officejet 6600 All But One Laptop Can Connect To Wireless Network Printer

One windows and 2 macs can connect to the wireless printer over the newtwork just fine but one (Windows 7) will not. HP Print and Scan Doctor can discover the printer from that laptop as "visible" but repeatedly says " need to install full software" which I've done, and after, it runs install wizzard reports, the IP address I've entered is wrong, which it's not. Firewalls are off. I've un and re installed, tried windows add device which can't connect either. I've had this problem before with this laptop but just can't remember how I fixed it. I remember getting to a screen that offered the option of installing over a nework or wireless directly to the printer and over the network fixed it, but I can't remember how I got there. Any ideas as I'm at wits end. Thanks

I read through your post about the installation troubles you are having with one of your Windows 7 computers and your Officejet 6600. I am here to let you know what my suggestion is for you!
There could be a program blocking the installation and causing the problem. I'd recommend a Clean Boot, restarting your PC, disabling your firewall and running through the installation again.
Hopefully that will get you through the install. Let me know the results!
