Can connect to internet, just can't browse web

Hi,
After installing Arch, I was able to upgrade all packages with pacman fine, as well as get Xorg and Xfce working fine.  When I logged in and fired up firefox, i got an "Address not found" problem.  I installed epiphany, and it doesn't work there either, though links does, for some reason.  I don't know what configuration files or infromation you need to know (sorry ), but I can give you whatever you need to help solve this problem.
All help on this is greatly appreciated

Hi guys,
I recently came back to a box with Arch installed.  It worked fine until I ran
pacman -Syu
After I reboot I could still access pacman and use links to get webpages, but any other browser turns up a "can't connect" error like the OP's post.
I reinstalled Arch with the latest x86_64 isolinux iso, and the problem persisted. I also tried the first suggestion, it changed it to 0 but again the problem persisted.
So here's the input that you requested:

Installed iTunes 10.5 but after I restarted my computer it won't connect to the Internet. All other computers in the house connect to Internet just fine. Help!! I Did all the regular modem diagnostics but that computer won't connect and it's a hard wire connection, not wireless (too far from the wireless signal). Is anyone else having this problem?

    Hello, might try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
IFor 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
    Click OK.

I am trying to search the web when I click on Firefox Icon this message shows up Offline Mode Fire Fox is currently in offline mode and can not browse web how do I fix this?

Firefox does not have a built-in "Run" option on downloads for security reasons. If you "Run" an item, your anti-virus/anti-spyware may not have an opportunity to fully examine the contents until it is already installed on your hard drive. Result: damage, if infected, is already installed on your system.
With that in mind, you can install the following add-on, but you accept the risk mentioned above ('''NOTE:''' the developer has not updated this product -- OR any of his other 7 extensions -- to be compatible beyond Firefox 3.6.x; therefore, when you upgrade to a more current version of Firefox, you may lose the functionality of the add-on if the developer does not update it.):

  • Can't browse web (outbound HTTP port 80) using wired Ethernet

I just purchased a new 20" Core 2 Duo iMac today (Leopard installed) and I'm seeing a very strange problem: I can't browse the web using a wired Ethernet connection. Here are the specifics:
    - When I set up wireless ethernet w/ Airport, it works fine (outbound port 80 access is successful)
    - Going back to wired ethernet, when I pop down into a shell, I notice that outbound FTP (port 25), outbound SSH on port 15554 works fine. When I run curl (text-based web browser), it hangs. This tells me that its only port 80 that's giving me problems and nothing else. The network connection in general is fine.
    This tells me the following:
    - wireless ethernet is working fine
    - wired ethernet mostly works - all outbound TCP ports that I've tested work great. Its just the HTTP/Web port 80 that seems to be blocked.
I went into the Security area and under Firewalls, it appears that the default configuration is set up to allow just about anything out and in.
This is so bizzare - I thing as far as networking goes, the web access is the most important one, so I can't see Apple disabling this somehow. What gives??
Earlier, I had set up a few user accounts for the rest of the family and set up Parental Controls on my two kids accounts. When I started noticing the outbound web access issues, I even went as far as deleting all the accounts to try to return the system as close as possible to how i received it.
Anyone have any ideas why my outbound web access is blocked?
    Thanks,
    Ben

I am not sure what the fix is but let me give it a try here for you. (Making sure edit works with questions 1,2,3)
    1. What version of ColdFusion Builder are you running. Are you sure you are running Beta 3?
    2. Can you access these files from your explorer window?
    3. Are you using RDS to connect to these files or the file system? (should be able to do both but that might be helpful to know which is failing.)
    4. Now the final question... by browse you might have a different issue. What version of CF server are you running? This might not be the issue but again could be if you are running developer version. If not an issue let me know and will try to hook up with you via connect to do an online screen share and help you out here.

  • Can't Browse Web when connected to VPN

    Hi,
I got interested in networks about a year ago.  We had some spare networking kit lying around in our office and I decided to set up a lab.
I've been able to configure NAT w/ PAT  on a cisco 3825.
I've got 1 access list, "Overloading" my OUTSIDE int, and a few "ip nat inside source static..." entries to handle my port forwards.
    It's a very basic setup.
The router died recently, so I got a cheap replacement form ebay.  Setting it all up was WAY easier than last time, so I decided to try something new.... VPN.
I'd previously had a port forward to a computer that was a VPN server, but I was able to use Cisco CCP to help me configure VPN.  Yes, technically cheating for all you CLI-heads out there, so sorry-- to make you happy, I did thoroughly inspect and spent extra time appreciating the code it wanted to inject to my router.
Now, I've got VPN working, and I can access all the PC's on the LAN I'm VPN'ing to, but -- I can't access the web when connected to VPN.
I've fiddled with the access list, trying to make it ANY/ANY.
I'm not really sure what to do.
I looked around and most of the stuff out there is for a site-to-site, or PAT running on a tunnel...
My issue is pretty basic, probably.  I just cant access outside when on VPN.
I'm more than willing to have another translation method.
    I've attached my router config.
Can you have a look and let me know what would need changing...
    Really appreciate any insight.
    Thanks,
    Brian

    Hello Brian,
Basically this is the VPN group:
crypto isakmp client configuration group open
     key (something)
     dns 192.168.1.1 8.8.8.8
     domain something.com
     pool SDM_POOL_1
     save-password
     backup-gateway 192.168.1.1
     max-users 5
     netmask 255.255.255.0
banner ^Cyou have connected to the vpn-ings!.  well done!    ^
I see that you are doing tunnel all, and you are not split tunneling on this configuration, what you can do is to use split tunnel, under this configuration as follow:
    ip access-list extended SPLIT_TUNNEL
permit ip XXXXX XXXXX 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255
XXXXX --> are the inside subnets
    Then under this:
crypto isakmp client configuration group open
    acl SPLIT_TUNNEL
This will allow you to have access to the internal subnets through the tunnel and have access to internet through the internet connection on your computer.
For further details take a look to this document:
Don't use Any on your ACL statements for split tunneling purposes.
Let me know how it works out!
Please don't forget to rate and mark as correct the helpful Post!

  • Can't browse web but email and Nimbuzz working

Yesterday on my E72, the native web browser, Opera mini, and the Gmail app connected to the interent but Nokia Messaging couldn't. Also Fring and Nimbuzz wouldn't connect to the internet, saying that I didn't have an internet connection.
Today I accidentally clicked on some network settings and suddenly Nokia Messaging, Fring and Nimbuzz started working, however, the native web browser, Opera and and other apps that could connect to the internet before now say that I don't have an internet connection.
What's the problem? This is really frustrating. Please help! Thank You.

I guess I have solved the problem by making two different access points with different apn's. Is there any way to make them one so that I don't have to always click on "more" and then "choose other access point" when I open Opera mini?

  • Can I locate the position of my device, last time it was connected to internet?

My Ipad 2 was stolen and it's been connected to internet just once, I was not on at that moment and I couldnt track the position, I did online swipe and online lock, any tip?
    thank you in advanced.

Please be aware that you are not communicating with Apple when you post in these forums. These are user-to-user support forums, so in almost all cases the only people who will reply to your posts are, like me, your fellow users.
And no, Apple cannot determine the IP address of your device. There is absolutely no way they could. Nothing they do would track and store the IP address of your iPad. Even with an IP address, and even assuming it was a current IP address, locating the device from that IP address would be very difficult and require probably multiple court orders and a lot of effort. I very much doubt that the police would go to that much trouble for a single stolen iPad.
Sorry, but there is nothing Apple nor any of us here can do to help you.
    Regards.

  • MiFi 4510L Problems - unable to browse web but can ping !

Have had stationary 4510L for months since my local store rep convinced me to upgrade my perfectly good 2200. Wish I had never done so. First the 4G/3G connect issues kept me from working until the recent firmware patch was finally released. But mixed in with that issue is another one that has gotten progressively worse.  Three replacement devices and two new SIM cards later and I still have the issue.  After three (alleged) trips to the tower reporting no issue, I decided to take the MiFi on the road to see if I have same issues on another tower.  I do.  Anybody else seen these symptoms or have any suggestions?
    1) Browsing fine, usually in forced 3G (EVDO) mode due to earlier issue resolved by firmware upgrade.
    2) Suddenly web sites stop responding with timeouts, or server unavailable, or web site taking too long to respond messages (depending upon browser in use).
    3) WiFi connection is good and I can browse locally to access modem.
    4) Modem states to be connected and not dormant, with decent EVDO signal strength.
    5) Connection log shows some TCP and UDP traffic.
But cannot browse anywhere.  The only fix is to disconnect and reconnect.  Then it all works fine.  The WiFi connection is never lost. Don't need to reset the modem, just drop the call and then reconnect.
Logged 12 to 15 calls on this and have not gotten satisfactory response yet.  Spent hours and hours collecting data on dates, times, screenshots, etc.  Two very interesting things that I think would be indicative of issue:
    1) Even though I can't browse web sites, I can ping them !!
It's as though internet layer protocols are working but transport layer are not.  When I can't browse, I also lose my VPN  connection (if a session was established). Cannot reconnect VPN, says the server does not respond, but I can ping it!
And in the Connection Log, I can see the ICMP traffic from the ping, along with TCP and UDP.  Yet cannot browse to any website.
    2) Once this problem occurs, the clock starts to drift from real time.  The time stamps in the Connection Log and in the System Log are a few minutes off, then ten to fifteen minutes off, then withyin a few days they are an hour off.  They occasionally show 1980!!  A hard reset re-synchs the timestamps to the system clock.
*ANYBODY* have these symptoms or any suggestions?  And if you have issue where browsing stops, but WiFi is still wokring, try pinging the website and see if you get a response.  I'd like to hear form you.

I have the *exact* same problem.  Been happening for months and nobody at Verizon has a clue.  I am going insane!!!  My problem is especially worse when I have more than one WiFi client connected.  "Stop browsing" means unable to browse the internet.  I can still browse on the local MiFi private network fine.  Just can't browse thru the Verizon network!
One laptop will stop browsing (but can still ping!!) while the others are working just fine.  Dropping the wireless and reconnecting doesn't fix it.  Rebooting the laptop doesn't fix it.
One client can browse but the other can't (but both can ping) and there is nooooo way to fix it but disconnect the call and then reconnect.  FRUS.STRAT.TING !!!!!
Happening now five or six times per day. We may have two to four laptops connected at any given time. Mostly we just do w/o internet on the clients when they stop browsing.  The other laptops will continue to browse for quite some time.  Eventually, when the working systems have an opportunity, we have to drop the MiFi call and reconnect to restore internet to everybody.
    THIS IS KILLING ME.
I cancelled my voice service this week and transferred to ATT.  T-mobile has a $40/month 5GB plan that does not charge for overages.  I'm considering switching to that.  Verizon, how many customers will you lose before you get your act together?
MiFi 4510L - replaced twice, latest one is three weeks old
Modem Firmware - 2.16.07 (the latest),
Using EvDO with better than -80 signal strength

  • OS 9 won't connect to internet

    hi all-
I have never used OS 9 and wanted to check it out. I got a 350Mhz iMac and installed OS 9 fresh. I connected it to my network via ethernet. Looking in TCP/IP it is setup for DHCP and it has a router assigned IP and I can connect to any computers on the network, browsing folders and moving files between them. But I cannot get a webpage to load. I get the error that the time is incorrect and the date is wrong, I cannot so software updates via Apple's utility so I do not believe it is a browser-based problem. I have both IE and iCab on it for web browsing.
Here's a twist. With the exact same settings in Aiport (DHCP) I connect to the internet just fine. The network I connect to is a wireless connectioned offered by my 2wire dsl modem/router.
The only difference I see is that one connection has an IP address behind a d-link router and one has an ip address that bypasses it by using the built in dhcp in the modem/router. All other computers connect to internet just fine on either connection, but they are all running 10.3 or better.
    Any ideas?
One other thing. The iMac is setup with 10.3.9 and OS 9. All is well in Panther (ethernet & Airport)which leads me to believe hardware is not the problem.
    Setup:
    SBC Yahoo 2Wire dsl modem/wireless router--> D-Link 634 wireless router --> D-link 5 port switch --> Powermac G4 1.42 (10.4.8), Powermac G4 867 (Server 10.4), Powermac G4 800 (10.3.9), iMac G3 (OS 9, 10.3)

Sounds like a DNS error. This was common with OS 9, and to a lesser extent with early versions of OS X. You need to
1 call up your ISP and get their DNS server address
2 type that address into the DNS server text box in TCP/IP
    You're done.
If you can't get hold of your ISP or if the mouth-breather at the other end of the line says something like 'Duh, what's a DNS?', try these DNS addresses:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
They're the DNS addresses for OpenDNS, which is a free DNS server. Once you can access the Internet, look up OpenDNS.
Here's a twist. With the exact same settings in
Aiport (DHCP) I connect to the internet just fine.
The network I connect to is a wireless connectioned

The Airport probably has DNS set up on it, while the other router probably doesn't.

  • Connect to Internet automatically?

    N8.
Is there any way to get the suite to connect to the internet automatically whent the phone is connected.
In latest upgrade the connection process is even more stupid than before. Each time I need to select my country from a long list and then the operator.
When I connect several times a day you would think a piece of software like this could remember my last settings.
Better would be if I did not need to open the whole suite. Connecting the phone by cable should be enough to get it to connect to internet.

    @Ram99997
You might need to restore to factory settings only in settings. Select settings only or "All" after backing up the data.
    @James,
Well here is how you can connect PC to internet easily by using PC Suite only for the first time, no need to open Nokia Suite or PC suite everytime to connect to internet.
Just establish an internet connection once using Nokia PC suite and next time you connect to internet there is no need to open any software.
Just click on networks icon and double click on Nokia USB modem(This gets created only after connecting using PC suite).
On Windows 7 you can see
On windows 8 you can see
    You can also do this
Open properties of Nokia USB Modem and
Uncheck the following and click OK to avoid few more clicks.
So next time you try to connect to internet just connect your phone and double click on Nokia USB Modem icon in networks.
    Hope this helps.

  • My OSX10.6.8 only connects to the internet for 5 second intervals??  Modem works fine (husband is not having problem on other computer), restarting doesn't work.  Can browse web just fine for 5 seconds until it disconnects.  Help??

I am running Mac OSX 10.6.8, but this problem has occurred also while I was running OSX 10.5.  This problem happens about once every two or three months, but seems to occur randomly.  When I try to connect to a wifi network on this computer, it will only connect for approx. 5 seconds before disconnecting, either telling me the password is wrong (which it is not) or a "connection timeout" message.  During this 5 second window, I can access the internet just fine until it disconnects me.  I don't understand why it is doing this.  My router/modem is working fine, my husband is using our other computer without problem.  In the past, restarting my computer a few times seems to do the trick.  But at the time of my typing this, it has not made any difference.  I am currently connected via an ethernet cable, but I would like to go back to being wireless.  Any advice for me?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I probably can't help much, but I have occasionally had the same problem. You might try going to System Preferences>Network and look at your Airport connection. See if the diagnostics can help.
    Good luck!
