Can connect w/ iBook, but not new iMac

Just got a new iMac (yay me!). But I can't get it to connect w/ my wireless router. However, my old iBook doesn't have any problem.
I'm trying the same network as the iBook, but it keeps saying it can't connect.
Any ideas?

I am having the same problem. My iBook which is about a year old, connects to my Belkin router with no problems. Really fast connection, stable etc...
But, the new iMac can't get a connection. In the internet connect box it sees the router, but when selected it connects, and then the signal level drops to nothing and it disconnects.
I have also found that if I turn both airport cards off, and then connect the iMac, the iBook won't connect (same problems, low signal strength and all that). Is there some conlfict between them?
My flatmate had a toshiba and a Macbook which both connected without a problem, and without changing my Ibook's connection.
This seems strange.
I have assigned each computer an ip address which works ok.
Any ideas?

  • I can connect to WiFi but not the internet

I am trying to connect a new IPad 2.  I have a Belkin router that is B+G+N.  I use WPA2 encryption and MAC filtering.  The IPAD's MAC address was entered into the router and when I provide the encryption key as the password I am able to connect to WiFi but not anything Internet related except for email.  When I type any URL in Safari it takes me to my router's management page.  In fact I can log into my router and manage it from my IPad but I can't connect to anything else.  I have 8 other computers/devices that connect to the router fine including two Apple Ipod touch's.  This has me baffled.

Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

  • I can connect to MAC but not my PC

I have a new Nano, that connects to Mac but not my PC. When I try to connect to PC it says "iTunes as detected a Macintosh formatted iPod. You must restore this iPod before you can use it on Windows."
How can I get my Nano to work on both?
    Thanks!

Windows cannot read a Mac formatted disk.
You need to Restore on iTunes for Windows and it will then work on Mac & Windows.

  • MacBook Pro can connect via Airport but not iPhone or iBook G4.

Anyone have any ideas? My Macbook Pro can connect to my Airport (v.7.3.1, 802.11n) but not my iPhone or iBook or a Windows Computer or WiFi Blackberry.
The connection is strong and detectable by the ibook but "unable to connect".
Somethings up with the settings but not sure what.
    Any ideas?
    HELP!

I've tried Channel 1,2,3,4,5 (still need to try the others)

I get the message "unable to join network..." The connection is very strong.

  • Can connect to router but not ad hoc network. Works fine with iPhone.

My brand new ipad on ios 3.2.2 connects fine to my router and my jailbroken iphone running Mywi. However, I cant connect to an ad hoc network set up on my laptop running vista. My iphone connects to the ad hoc without any problems. I've tried everything, static ips, wep, wpa, hard resets, restoring, resetting network settings but no go. How can' everything else be fine but not connecting to the ad hoc network, especially since it works fine to connect with the iphone?
Btw, the ad hoc is for controlling music software on the laptop through wifi. It's not for getting internet.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
    Many thanks,
    L

Hi and welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Did you try doing a search, upper right corner of this window, on remote control? There have been a number of discussions during the last two weeks about remote control problems.
There have also been discussions about networking an iPad via another computer, such as iMac or MacBook Pro, using the computer's wireless card rather than a router.
See if one of those will answer your question.

  • Can connect to testers but not my mum!

    Hi,
I have been trying for some time to get iChat 2.1 to audio or video chat with my mum in the UK (I'm in Japan). We both have iSight, iChat AV 2.1, OS X 10.3.9. I have a PowerBook G4, my mum has an iMac G5. I am using an NEC router (all in Japanese, which I don't understand properly), my mum is using a BT Voyager 205ADSL. I am using an Airport Extreme, but have tried with or without it - same result.
The message we are getting is something like 'mum/Tom did not respond'.
We can both connect to the AIM testers 'tryichatav' and 'ichatavtesting' with video and audio but not to each other. I have gone through the port opening procedure that Ralph advised us in another column 'iChat audio', but at that time we thought the problem was at my mum's side.
Now I know that we can both connect to the testers, I have absolutely no idea what to do or where the problem lies.
Any ideas would be great. Would us both buying new routers solve the problem for sure? If so we will do this as we are tired of this headache, what would you recommend?
    Regards and thanks in advance.
    Tom

    Hi Ralph
I managed to connect with Tony last night through iChat AV using iSight, so can I assume that the problem isn't at my end now?
If so, it may be easiest (but not cheapest) for my mum to just buy a new router. If she bought the Netgear one mentioned above ought we not to have any more problems or is it just not as simple as that?
I enjoyed my first real use of iChat - it really does change a few things doesn't it...
It would be great for me and my parents as we hardly see each other, and iChat really does make meeting possible.
Many thanks to both Tony and Ralph for your help on this and other threads.
    Tom
PS: I have two machines. I had been alternating between two computers in trying to connect previously - both running the same software - and always got the same errors. Last week I upgraded one to 10.4.2/iChat AV 3 and tried that with Tony last night. I am still waiting to try my new configuratin with my mum... Just in case that changes anything...

  • Connect to VPN but not my iMac at work

    Hi all,
Very frustrating problem here. When I'm at home using my MacBook Pro, I can connect to the Cisco VPN at work and log into SMB servers. I can also log in to AFP servers. But I want to be able to control my iMac at work because sometimes I need files on that hard drive. And I can't see any macs! When I bring my MBP to work and am on the network, I can control my iMac and see all of the other macs under the "Shared" section of the Finder sidebar.
    Here's my setup at home.
MBP: running 10.6.8 using built-in VPN. Tried to connect using "Screen Sharing," which works at work. IT gave me ARD 3.5.1. Still doesn't work.
Home Router: Airport Extreme Base Station (dual-band model, but I can't remember the model #). The firmware is current. Using Airport Utility, I have Port Mapping set up for ARD service (automatically does stuff for ports 3283 and 5900, but I don't know what the numbers mean).
I use a Comcast Cable Modem to connect to the Internet.
This thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/3144943#3144943 said I should "configure the AEBS so that the option to distribute IP addresses is DISABLED." It is obviously talking about an older version of Airport utility, but when I go to my AU > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing drop-down menu, I see three options: Share a public IP address (selected), Distribute a range of IP addresses, and Off (Bridge Mode). I am not using my AEBS as a bridge, so I think that's configured correctly.
Since I can control my iMac from my MBP over the wireless network at work, and I can make a VPN connection from home and log onto SMB and AFP servers at work, I suspect there is something wrong with my AEBS setup that's blocking something to do with Screen Sharing. Any ideas? I've even tried turning off the OS X firewall and still didn't have any luck.

Using Airport Utility, I have Port Mapping set up for ARD service (automatically does stuff for ports 3283 and 5900, but I don't know what the numbers mean).
FYI. Port 3283 is used by the Net Assistant function of the ARD (Apple Remote Desktop) service. Port 5900 is used by both ARD or a VNC server, like Screen Sharing in OS X. Note: When you enable Screen Sharing within the Sharing panel in System Preferences, you are basically turning on the Mac's VNC server service. You would then access this server via a VNC client ... like another Mac or from a PC that has a VNC client installed.
Actually, it is somewhat backwards of this. It's NOT your router that needs to have port mapping configured; it would be your work's router instead. The only reason you would configure yours is if you were attempting to access a computer on your home's local network from the work (or anywhere else from the Internet).
Since you already got ARD from your work's IT guys, they should be able to help you configure Screen Sharing, running on a work computer, to be accessible via a VPN tunnel from your home's network.

  • Can connect to wifi but not to Internet

I had the problem that iPad2 suddenly could connect to wifi, and to 3G for that matter, but got an error trying to acces the Internet (from Safari or mail).
Tried for hours all the advice foud here and other places, like resetting this and that.
I had a feeling that it was something blocking on the iPad, not a router problem - all other devices could connect to Internet.
The solution: I had disconnected Dropbox! - Connecting to Dropbox again solved all problems. Now it's even possible to disconnect to Dropbox without getting problems with Internet access.
The lesson learned from this: apps can hang up Internet-connection, though they are not even using it!

  • Can connect to network but not internet. Please Help!!!!!!!!!

I have a Thinkpad T-60p and have encountered a serious problem; I am unable to connect to the internet. The Thinkpad will recognize and connect to wireless networks but when I go to actually open a webpage it does not open. I spent hours troubleshooting the problem to no avail. My other laptop connects to the internet fine, so I do not think it is an issue with my router or modem. I also went to my neighbors and I was unable to connect to the internet even though I could connect to his network; once again my second computer does not have a problem. I tried what I could in the Thinkvantage wireless software but I am not that familiar with it. When I use the test connection option it just reads, “unable to connect to internet” but I have a strong signal to my network. I then tried a wired connection directly to my cable modem and my neighbors; once again it showed that I have a connection, but still will not connect to the internet. I tried disabling my Firewall and Virus software and still could not connect. I have shutdown, unplugged and reset everything. I still receive the same results. I am not sure what has happened, I have not installed any new software or hardware recently. The computer has been working great up until this morning. I ran my virus software and a free online scan as well, nothing had been detected. I called tech support and they said it was a software issue to either pay $100 for help or post in the forum. The only other option I can think of is a complete systems restore, which I am trying to avoid. Anyone have any suggestions?
    Please Help,
    P.

I will try that when I get home from work, thank you for the advice. However,I did notice that when it attempts to connect it shows the IP Address in the IE window bottom left corner. In the past it would always read connecting to "website name" but since the problem started it shows the IP address instead of the actual name.

  • Can connect to Wifi but not LAN internet with iphone 6

    Hello from Australia.
Ever since I brought my iphone 6 home, I have been plagued with Wifi issues.  All of my idevices have lost internet connection, even though they can be connected to WiFi via Airport Express (2nd gen).
My internet is a LAN ethernet cable, and usually after connnecting to WiFi (on any device), I get a Login Page from my ISP and I can connect to the internet as usual.
The new iphone 6 has never been able to bring up the Login Page, but is able to connect to my WiFi network.  My old 4S is also unable to connect, as well as my husband's 4S.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

  • Mail downloads on old iMac and iPhone but not new iMac

Just bought a new iMac. Transferred all the settings. However if I download my email from my old iMac it won't show up on the new one unless I check it on the new machine first. Can I get all my mail accounts to download all my messages? ie I don't want messages to only be downloaded/available on the machine I happen to check mail on first. Checking my mail from the iPhone doesn't cause this problem. Any suggestions?

    Hello,
Is this a Gmail account? If so, then the issue is with how Gmail works with POP access. If you using Gmail on more than one computer you should switch to IMAP.
If not Gmail, but if it is POP, then on all Macs check the settings in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced regarding leaving messages on the server.
    More info, please.
