Can connetct only to local network machines
Hello
I can only connect to my local machines and not outside network, i get access denied all the time when i try, yet when i am there on that network with my powerbook i can connect within the network.
please advise.
you mean the apple remote desk top should be checked in the firewall of the machines iam trying to control?
Well yes, the system firewall has to be set to allow ARD. But again, I mean that you need to open the ports in the router that connects your home LAN (which I presume is what you mean) to the Internet.
You may also have to forward them if your router is an NAT device (i.e. it's assigning IP addresses to the workstations rather than your ISP having given you several). The ramifications of using NAT with ARD have been covered here many times already; just search the forum for "NAT".

Can admin server, but not network machines?
hopefully this is something with an easy solution. I have a user that should have full admin rights, but doesn't seem to.
* User can log on/administer the server via Screen Sharing or directly from console.
* User is in the Administrators and Open Directory Administrators group.
* When the user logs on from a client machine that is OD-attached, he can't authenticate to make changes on that machine. (eg to install a piece of software)
I'm not sure why he can't authenticate on the network machine. Do I need to make a local admin account on each of the client machines? Shouldn't a user given server admin privs be allowed to make changes on an OS X client machine? I've been pouring over the docs and the peachpit book that I have to no avail.
Anybody?I'm just an idiot sometimes. I forgot to go in and check "Allow user to administer this computer." I thought I had to go digging in Workgroup Manager somewhere. D'oh!

when I "share a link" (URL) using the pulldown menu in Safari, the email goes to all addresses I indicate, but only Apple computers receive the link. Others such as PCs and Blackberries get the message, but the field which should have the link is blank. Is this normal? Why can I only send to Apple machines?
I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6. -
Can I use wifi for internet, while ethernet only for local network?
Hello everyone. We have two internet connections at our office. One is wifi only -- but fastest uploads. The other is connected to our ethernet network (and very slow). Really, it's not much a network -- just iMacs connected to a switcher. When transferring files between iMacs, obviously we want to remain connected to ethernet. But when uploading and downloading files, the wifi option is quickest (long story why -- our offices next door, can't run a physical line yet, yadda yadda).
So we find ourselves constantly switching between the two in network preferences. Not only is this a pain, but it doesn't allow us to upload or download directly to a drive on the network.
Is there a way to tell the preferences to use wifi for internet, and ethernet for the local network (without internet)?
(We have updated mountain lion on i7 imacs, and most recent airport extreme)
Thanks!Your downstairs router can be installed anywhere in your home, but telephone companies or ISPs are only obligated to install their equipment just barely inside its service entrance. Usually, that location is the worst possible one for a home network, since it's in a basement or some remote corner, far from all the devices that use it.
Your idea to install an Ethernet cable to extend its reach to a more suitable location is an excellent one and will be worth the effort or expense. If you don't want to do it yourself a qualified electrician can perform the work quickly and elegantly, and you may find the cost surprisingly affordable. Ask your friends and neighbors to recommend a reputable electrician and get a written estimate. -
I have found many solutions to this problem assuming home internet access, but I only have access to the internet via my iPhone. I do not want online capability in my PS3. All I want to be able to do is control iTunes on my MacBook, and hear/view the content on my home theatre. I would prefer to use my iPhone as the remote for iTunes, and do not want to add the monthly cost of home internet to this equation. I do not require access to anything on my MacBook except iTunes in this application. I would prefer to use iTunes and stream to my home theatre, as opposed to setting up my MacBook as a media server and using the PS3 interface. Is this possible? Can I accomplish this goal using a local network? Can I create a wifi network on my MacBook to do this, or do I need a router? I am looking to spend as little as possible on this project, as I plan on moving to a more urban area soon, and will be buying Apple TV and subscribing to home internet service when this happens.
Get an AirPort Express. It has an audio out which you can connect to the line-in on your home theatre system. All the other devices will talk to the AirPort Express and stream content to it via wi-fi.

How can I make a local network without internet?
In Snow Leopard, I was able to make a local network in my home using internet sharing. The network was there even though my dialup modem was disconnected. Now when Lion, the network is only there if my internet is connected. How do I make a local network in my home without having to stay connected. I can click create network in the wi-fi menu, but that goes away every time I put the computer to sleep. Are there any third party apps to fix this?
If you are transfering files, you can use disk sharing instead. All you need is to connect the two computers together with an ethernet cable. For gaming, not sure.

Can't connect to FMS from local network machine
Hi,
I have done the FMS developer setup on one machine say 100.188.34.28 and accessing the media from third server, modified the VOD_DIR . I was able to stream the flv video till yesterday using the rtmp i.e rtmp://100.188.34.28:1935/vod/sample.
But today I am not able to do the rtmp streaming on the same and other machine on the same network.
I am able to ping the machine(100.188.34.28) and telnet(telnet 100.188.34.28 1935) the machine also. But not able to stream the video using rtmp.
Please let me know if I am missing anything?
Thanks & Regards,
Anjali RawatHi,
This post is similar to the post http://forums.adobe.com/message/137559.
If we uninstall the FMS server and install it again then it resolves the issue, we will be able to stream using rtmp. This is not feasible to uninstall the FMS everytime and setup the files again to point to the third server to access the media.
Anyone please suggest to resolve this issue?
Thanks & Regards,

Windows 7 desktop networking ok, but can't ping on local network
Hi all,
One minute, networking is working fine on my Windows 7 machine named "oscar". Next, I have to switch oscar's ethernet cable directly to the cable modem for an unrelated test. Switch cable back, let oscar reacquire IP address, now I
notice I can't reach my wireless printer.
I try to ping it by IP address, get "Request timed out". Tried to ping my MacBook Pro, named "newt", by name. DNS resolves name ok to 192.168.99.150, then I get same "Request timed out".
I can ping oscar from itself just fine via 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.99.137 (its assigned IP address).
I ping the printer, 192.168.99.232, from my MacBook Pro, works fine (as does printing from newt). Try to ping oscar from newt, get "Request timeout for icmp_seq" messages.
I've tried resetting networking via netsh as described at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 & rebooting, no change. Firewall is completely off.
Oscar gets IP from DHCP on my router, 192.168.99.1, & I can still ping external IP addresses successfully by name & IP (like google.com, etc). Web browsing from oscar works fine. It's only on my internal network that this machine can't
see other IP addresses. Again, other machines can see each other just fine via ping.
Retried all fix steps found on Internet (short of reinstalling Windows) and rebooted oscar after each one. Still no go.
Also reset arp cache (arp -d *) & retried, including reboot. Still no go.
Here's the output of ipconfig /all:

Can I only bridge my network, rather than extending it?
I have an airport extreme, which I'm trying to use as a bridge for the wired devices in my entertainment system for HD streaming. It mostly works, but has problems with multiple devices are active on the network. The other end of the connection is a current model Time Capsule. The Extreme is a previous generation (the flat style).
What I really want is only a bridge, but the option in the Airport utility is to "Extend a wireless network". So, clients connect to the airport in the living room rather than the access point farther away.
Can this be controlled?Unfortunately, if you try to configure the AirPort Extreme to operate only as a bridge (Join a wireless network)...and not an extender....the Ethernet ports are not enabled on the device in that type of configuration, so it is virtually useless in that regard.
Try to minimize the obstructions in the wireless signal path between the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme as much as possible. Ideally, you want line-of-sight between the devices.
Ironically, a less expensive AirPort Express can be configured to "join" a wireless network....and....the Ethernet port is enabled when you do this.
The only way to try to control what device that computers connect to is temporarily turn off the WiFi on a Mac or iOS device, move it near the wireless access point and turn the WiFi back on to see if the device will pick up a signal from the closest and strongest access point.
Actually, a Mac laptop will usually automatically switch access points as it moves from one area to another and pick up the best signal from the closest access point, but iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad will not usually do this, since they have much simpler operating systems. -
Can I access my local network through my phone number ?
with personal hotspot on I can connect to other computers locally. Is it possible to connect via my phone number ?
Welcome to the Apple community.
Yes you can do that providing the content on the network drive is listed in iTunes and iTunes is running while you use the Apple TV. -
OS X server for local network Drupal web development
HI All,
First post here, so here goes, please go easy
Background
We're a small web development shop and bought a mac mini server so we can collaboratively develop our websites. Previously we have all been using MAMP on each of our local machines to develop Drupal websites.
*Help needed*
I've tried configuring some custom sites through the web services preference pane, but have no luck in viewing these custom sites from our other mac clients.
Ideally we want to virtual host multiple sites on our server that we can see on our local network.
We only want to connect/browse the server locally , so I'm a bit stumped on the need to set up DNS.
Ideally i would like to browse the server directly by entering the IP address (and port number if need) followed by the site name.ie:
http://myserve.local/mydevelopmentsite
Essentially, i would like to replicate MAMP functionality - hosting multiple sites on the server that can be collaborated on from the local machines.
I've really found it hard to find any configuration information via search, most topics seem to refer to modifying regular OSX installs to work as a server. My understanding is that as OSX server has all the necessary LAMP components that this should be a fairly straightforward task.
If anyone can share any links, advice or tutorials that would be much appreciated.
Best Regards
Hixster

By default, virtual hosting setup via Server Admin use name-based virtual hosting, meaning that Apache looks at the hostname in the request to work out which site configuration to use. That's why you need DNS - a way to map the numerous names to the various sites you've configured, e.g.:
http://site1.server.local/ -> site 1
http://site2.server.local/ -> site 2
(where both site1.server.local and site2.server.local resolve to this server's IP address)
It is possible to do port-based virtual hosting (where you include the port number in the URL) - to do this you leave the hostname blank in Server Admin and ensure that each site has a different port number configured.
http://server1.local:8001/ -> site 1
http://server1.local:8002/ -> site 2
There's no easy way to map URI elements to different sites, e.g.:
http://server1.local/site1 -> site 1
http://server1.local/site2 -> site 2
This can be done by editing Apache's configuration directly, but you can't do this via Server Admin (unless you really are just mapping to different directories and not entirely different sites). -

Can I run a second Time Machine on one computer?
Hi guys,
Is there any way I can run two Time Machines for one computer? I want to have one external Time Machine backup sitting on my desk, and another stored offsite for safe keeping, then swap them over every few days so that they are both generally up to date.
Any ideas?not across internet. you can back up across local network to a Time Capsule, a drive connected to Airport extreme base station or another mac running leopard, leopard server or a Xsan storage device. all other network backups are unsupported. and it's definitely not possible to do it over internet.
-
Local Time Machine backup then move to Airport?
Can you do a local time machine setup of a new drive, then move it to your Airport?
I heard it does it differently on the Airport so you should just initialize it from the Airport.
Wanted to ask here before I start a long backupI did an initial local USB local backup then moved it to my AirPort and Time Machine sees it just fine and backs up without any errors.

How can I sync all files in 2 Macs using local network only?
I am looking to equip a small office with 2 Macs, iMac and MBAir. I would like for all files to be synced (either automatically, daily, or worst case, on demand). The trick is that this has to be in the local network only, as these are sensitive files. There will be a QNAP NAS on the network as well if it matters.
Maybe it is possible to setup both Time Machines to look at the same folder on the NAS? Any ideas on how to make this possible?Here are three ways to do it. None of the ways is automatic:
(1) Get an Acrobat.com account, and copy your files via Acrobat.com:
