Can custom HTML widgets be copy protected in iBooks Author 2.0?

Hi to All!
Never used iBooks Author up to this point, but looking in to it.
As per the subject heading: If a custom designed HTML widget is used in iBooks Author 2.0 can it easily be copied & pasted by viewers for their own puposes? If this is so can this action be prevented - i.e. can a custom HTML widget be copy protected in some fashion?

I concur with Tom. That feature is not available with iBooks. If the page turning effect is important, you could consider developing a fixed layout Epub 3 instead.

Can a HTML Widget access the content of a iBook page?

I am writing a HTML Widget that will present more information about the content where it is located by accessing a database. To do so, it needs to access the content of the page where it located, or, at least, the page number. Is there a way to do this?
Sure I can 'hard code' the info in the widget's javascript and have one different widget per page/content, but that will be difficult to maintain and deploy.

In the same line of thinking I would like to ask if it is posible to access, via javascript, the propeties of the widget so that, in thesis, use the description or title property to pass info to the script about content or page number.

Custom HTML widget unable to load once previewed

Hi guys , i've recently created a iAd Project , i converted into a widget and i drag and dropped onto the iBook Author , but when i click preview , it doesnt want to preview unless i right-click on the widget and select the only option reload, perhaps anyone can advice me on how to preview the iBook's widget automatically without having to reload it . Not sure I correctly understood your post, but it sounds like you are trying to use iBA to check the workings of your widget. iBA doesn't do that – it just shows you a preview of what the 'opening' screen will look like (so that you can double check it's the right widget, for example), but it isn't functional. You can preview the book (or just that section) on your iPad, and check the operation of the widget on your iPad.
But if you're using iAd producer to create your widget, why bother? You can test your project from within iAd Producer. If you want to test it in your iPad, download the 'Widget Tester' app from the app store on your iPad. Then you can "preview on device" right from the preview menu in iAd Producer. You can build and bug test your iAd Producer project within in iAd Producer. Once correct, you can save it, then 'export to disk (optimised)'.

Creating a youtube widget in iAd Producer for Ibooks Author

Hello,
I am trying to create a widget in iAd Producer to add to my iBooks Author template featuring a youtube video.
I am able to create and save the widget but when I place it into iBooks Author template I get a large gray box with a small black box in the center (the video).
Is there a way to correct this?
How can I eliminate the outer frame?
Any other suggestions on adding a youtube video to iBooks Author?

Can't open my book in progress (an ibooks author file) after updating to ibooks author v1.1. Help!

I've been working on an ibook in author now for 2 months. I've had some upds and downs with the format, but finally have a product that's close to finished. I updated my ibooks author software to 1.1 yesterday and now I can't open my file. Please help!!!!

The only people who can read your book in .ibooks format are people with an iPad, and an iPad cannot read a dvd. So you should probably export it as .pdf.

Not available in iBooks Author. Available options are brightness slider, book search and bookmark.
Set your font size higher than default if you have concerns.
I have to say, I have not checked the portrait templates yet...which are more likely to be used for flowing text only books, but knowing Apple, I doubt they will have the option either.

Why does my html widget not play sound in ibooks?

I've designed a widget that plays sound correctly in every other browser. It uses an AAC-MPEG4 with the .m4a file extension on all of the sounds. I know the code is working correctly because as I said, it works in any browser. I've checked to volume controls and speakers of the ipad, they work and are turned all the way up. I just wonder if ibooks somehow does not support the javascript .play() command...

This proves what I believed and that is you are not naming the file correctly. It has got a hidden file extension and if you were using Windows, I would have told you how to reveal the file names properly including hidden extensions of known file names. I know nothing about MACs so you have yto wait until Murray Summers or John Waller comes here. They know about Apple MACs and they have been in the business longer than anybody here.
In windows, if we want Notepad to keep the names as it is we normally name the file as:
"welcome.html" including the quotes so that Notepad will know that it is not the normal text file to be opened in notepad or wordpad (TWO text editors in Windows)
Perhaps you should use my file as a template and then change the text to:

Can I create a standard print book in ibooks author?

I need to create a workbook for teachers that will be printed and also made available as an ebook. Has anyone used i books author to export files for a print shop to use in creating a physical book?
I spent a lot of time a decade ago using early versions of Pagemaker and Quark express to create print publications. I have thought about using indesign for this project but am so mac-centric that I figured my life would be simpler (and less expensive) using publishing software for mac users.

iBA can export to .pdf, but it is definitely not intended to produce printed materials. The app Pages is more appropriate, and even there you may find some problems relating to print shop requirements. Most people would probably use InDesign or another app. Best ask in the Pages forum

HT5065 can movies be used as chapter start in iBooks Author?

part of a book i am designing has a requirement to use movies/moving images as full-page (full-screen) chapter starts. Is this possible? The movies would have text overlaid on them. Many thanks for your time. Best wishes, Richard

OK KT, if i decide to go the full-screen 'tap to play' route, is that possible with chapter starts? Would this have any adverse effect on other aspects of the book? For instance, the chapter starts have a linked relationship with the contents page, would it affect this?
However, if it is possible to do this do i simply delete the existing picture, drop in a media widget then insert my movie into that?

Why can i not sync a book created in ibook author to iphone?

I created a book with video for a portfolio which i can show to clients. I can open it on ipad, but i don't want to carry my ipad around all the time and want to show the portfolio on my iphone when needed. Seems i can't do it on iphone. Any ideas?

Pages: the template page has a "ePub best practices for Pages". Have you checked it ?
I dont use Pages.. but I just droped a moview onto a page and its playing!
You will get better qualified information on Pages if you go to the top of this pages and click on "Apple support Communites" and look for the pages group.

Webapp to create html widgets (videos, maps, ...)

Not sure if I can do this but I would like to see a widget to jump from one section or chapter to another section or chapter in the book. The widge would be a button or image button.

The images in my html widget look blurry!

Hey there, I'm making some html widgets for my book using HYPE. When I insert this into the ibooks the program shows the preview image in crisp high quality but when I preview it on the iBook, the figure looks somewhat blurred. When I tap on the figure to enlarge it and make it interactive, everything looks fine and crisp, it's only the preview window before it's enlarged that doesn't looks so good. I even tried replacing the preview with a separate picture and previewing that but whatever I do, the preview just doesn't look sharp. Does anyone have any solutions I can try?

Blurry preview icon for HTML widget
The best way to handle this issue is to make the preview icon transparent and place it over your own custom reference graphic on the page.
1- Place on the page the graphic you will be using as the reference icon for the widget
2- Place your widget on top of the custom graphic icon. Make sure it is in "Front". Also make the preview icon is as small as possible.
3- Click on the preview icon TWICE and make its transparency "0". If you only click the preview icon once the Transparency slider will not become active.
4- Now, when you preview the book, your Widget Link will open your custom HTML Widget and both will display at full resolution.
A bonus result of doing this... Since your link is transparent you can make it as large as needed to make it a large enough touch target.
