Can Director do this?

I have a project that I'd like to try in Director, but I'm
not sure if it can do it. Attached is an illustration to give you
an idea what I'm talking about. Basically, I need to have a
moveable object "B" that is connected (tethered) to a semi-fixed
object "A". The whole thing takes place in zero gravity, so
basically you "fly" object "B" around, but it's movements are
restricted by the tether. Is this possible to do, and if so could
you give me a rough idea of what is involved? Thanks!

Can Director Interact With Other Applications?

Hello,
I am a CBT/E-Learning Developer looking for a way to author
Guided Help. I am thinking of how to develop interactive tutorials
that, instead of using screenshots of an application, interact with
the application itself.
For instance, let's imagine that a person is working in MS
Word and doesn't know how to save a file. He can click the icon for
the "Saving A File" lesson, and a caption displays on top of MS
Word that reads something like "Click FILE", along with some type
of indicator of the FILE button, such as an outline, highlight,
arrow, etc. The user clicks FILE, the File Menu drops down in MS
Word, and the next step of instructions is displayed. In this way,
the usre is guided through the steps of saving a file as he
actually performs the task in the software.
Can Director create this type of thing?

Thanks for replying. I used MS Word as just an example; the
type of software I'm wanting to use this for is police records
management software. I've been doing the interactive simulation
tutorials for them since 1999, using multimedia authoring tools
Demoshield and Opus Pro, and demo authoring tools RoboDemo and Demo
Builder. However, I wanted to get away from interactive tutorials
for 3 reasons:
(1) My client's software is frequently updated, and keeping
up with taking new screenshots is a hassle.
(2) I'm of the opinion that "at the moment of need", process
embedded "guided help" in the actual application is a much more
useful form of training than working through a simulation.
(3) It will greatly help my client's support staff and
training staff
I've been researching process embedded e-learning and guided
help for almost a year now. I've looked at everything from
multimedia authoring to macro software. I even found two programs
that do exactly what I want, but they are very very expensive, much
more expensive than Director.
Thanks for the tip on Hook Xtra; I'll check that out. Last
night I found an xtra called MasterApp, which may also do what I
need. I appreciate the concern about the difficulty of programming,
and I'm not a programmer (except HTML, and we all know how easy
that is). But I'm in this for the long haul, and would be using it
for potential new clients, not just my current client. I love
learning new software, and I have a membership to the IEEE Computer
Society, which gives me over 1300 online e-learning courses I can
take, including Director.

HT4576 I want to set up appointment times for an overseas trip before I go, and see those local times in the places I visit, but also be able to set new appointments while I am traveling, in the local times. Can I do this with Time Zone Support? If not,

I want to set up appointment times for an overseas trip on my iPhone 4S before I go, and have them appear as I put them in (for the local time) when visiting other countries. I also want to be able to adjust times and set up new appointments when I am overseas for the local time. Can I do this using the Time Zone Support or any other way?
Basically I want to do what I can do with a piece of paper - write down the time for when I will be there, and have it viewable when I am there, but also be able to put down new times while there.

Regarding your question about reverting back- yes, I think you can. If you make a backup of your current configuration in Server Admin (by dragging the configuration file to your desktop- cool, no?) then you can load that one back in should your configuration not work. If you have the manual from Apple it should describe this process.
Network speed post-op? I don't think you will need to worry. Even using home directories stored on our OS X Server there is no network slowdown (that you can notice or that impacts the wider LAN in any case). It shouldn't slow down access to files, applications (which still come from the local drive anyway) or individual internet connections (even with filtering).
In our experience some of these things have actually got faster- but a lot of that is user perception. Same goes for people who will know you have configured the server and that they are now accessing files through your network from the server, and who really think it is slower. File coming from your local hard drive will always be quicker- but network access isn't that bad that it will make you barf and run in the opposite direction.
Something to look at: connection speed between clients and switching technology in your office. In other words, what kinds of switches are you using, what line speed have you got (100MB/s?) and is the connection from your server to the switch gigabit? Make sure it is.

this. If only I'd found this out before I started a new project in
D11. Now I'll have to start the entire thing again in MX04!!!
There's progress! I'm so glad I spent loads of money (even more in
rip-off UK) to upgrade and now find out that the software is
USELESS!!!
I really can't believe this... Up until now I was ok about
D11 - it was an improvement. Now I hate it with a passion (due to

Elements 12, Epson Artisan 1430, "Photoshop can not print this document"

I recently upgraded to Elements 12 and also got a new printer, Epson Artisan 1430. I got some great prints and then one day, it stopped working. Elements error. No error number just a message, "Photoshop can not print this document" I tried restarting the program, the printer, and the computer. No luck. Tried different graphic files; no luck. The printer works with all other programs beautifully. I cannot find help anywhere on Adobe forum. Running Windows 7

John, I deleted the printer and deleted those folders and reinstalled the printer using the printer menu. When I tried the apple software update it said my software was up to date and didn't offer an option to get updated print drivers. I tried printing again and the same thing happened.

I am trying to print from the Macbook to the Artisan entirely over a wireless network. The Macbook has not been plugged directly into the printer or to the router at any point in this. I did try what you suggested, resetting the printing system, and as earlier it did not offer any software updates when I looked for one. I tried printing again and the same result.
I dug around some more directories and found some more files with the epson name in there and deleted those and then attempted to reinstall using the printer setup page, and then again tried a software update and again it didn't find any new drivers, and of course the same printing error occurred again.
It sure appears that the MacOS is holding onto drivers somewhere that I cannot discover because when I reinstall the printer it takes it all of 3-4 seconds to install, and when I try to do the software update it is not finding any new drivers anywhere.
Syd, I agree that there seems to be something specifically corrupted about the printer driver itself, however, but is there another way to remove drivers?
Should I try uninstalling everything and attempting a USB installation to see if prints that way?

I'm currently trying to figure out whether Flex is the best option for a new interactive educational program I'm involved in, and was wondering if anyone could let me know if Flex would be suitable to accomplish the following tasks:
1. I have a 270 degree video, about 400-500px high, however I only want to display approx. the center 120 degrees (700-800px) of it at a time. Can I make it so that the user can hover over the left of the screen (or click a button) to pan the viewer to the left or right, to view the remaining video (somewhat like the Immersive Media viewer - http://www.immersivemedia.com/#demo34). The video itself will be streamed via a high speed educational network so load times should not be an issue.
2. Since the video will be spherical, can (or should) it be mapped onto the inside of a sphere (I think this is how it needs to be done)? It seems the immersive media viewer works like this too.
3. Is it possible to blur the video slightly, in such a way that when you move the mouse over the video, the portion of the video within 100px or so from the cursor becomes clear? For example if theres a road sign in the video, you would need to move your mouse over it to be able to clearly read the roadsign.
4. Obviously this is a big, complicated job, so would you recommend spending a fortune getting a advertising agency to take care of it (with much of the budget making the directors rich), or are there specialised independent Flex developers out there that could get the job done well? Could be difficult since I am in New Zealand and we'd need someone local.
If Flex cant do any of this, could you recommend a way that would work (eg Silverlight - god forbid, I hate microsoft)?

Do this in Flash and then publish a SWF. You can then load this SWF in a Flex app and have it part of a more rich UI with a vertical TileList to select videos, etc.

i had one for a long time, then when i got the ipad i didn't realize they would all still work under one so i set up the second one on that
then when i got the new iphone i put in the info for the first and main one from my mac pro and it would not work at all, and i knew it was right, then it asked me to create a new one or i couldnt finish the setup

In iPhoto albums may contain photos with the same file name - iPhoto handles that just fine
If you are exporting them to move somewhere else use the sequential file name feature of export to give each file a unique name

I have an IMac which is my main computer and two IPads and an Ipod Nano.
Obviously we use these in sync as an when required via Itunes.
I have recommended a friend to have an IPAD2 and she wishes to load some of her existing cds into her Itunes Account.
If I wish to do this with my own, it is simple as we simply use the Imac which transfers content into Itunes.
However, my friend does not have a separate computer so I wish to load her CD's into Itunes and then sync to her Ipad without interfering with my own library and using her Apple ID.
How can I achieve this?

You cannot. Copy everything you want form the old computer to the new one, then sync it.

Correct Iphone will sync, or manually manage, with one and only one computer/library at a time. Syncing, or manually managing, to another will indeed erase the current content.

You copy them from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The iphone is not a backup/storage device.

The problem is probably that the index is corrupt and you need to completely re-create it rather than rebuilding individual mailboxes. I have no idea what the situation really is now after having tinkered with the contents of ~/Library/Mail/, though, so the following procedure may or may not work.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

I am at a new office that uses Outlook (not Outlook Exchange) which does not sync with my mobile... I just got iCloud set up on my PC to sync my contacts, calendar, reminders, etc... The sync worked (not without flaws, but the other issues seem solvable... I think), so that i can now see all my appointments on both my phone and on my PC. The problem I am having is that iCloud moved all of my calendar items from Outlook into iCloud calendar and now when I send out meeting/calendar invites the recipients may accept them, but the meeting does not get added to their calendar. This is a huge problem and may mean that i need to turn off iCloud.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I am replying to my own post here as I seem to have fixed the problem.
I do have some calendars that are shared. Some of those are shared with users who have time zone support turned on. So i activated time zone support on my iphone, then deleted my icloud subscription. I then signed in to icloud again and voila... problem solved.
It is a weird one as the other calendar views were always fine and when you opened an event that appeared in the wrong day (on list view), the correct date of the event was shown in the information...
one more bug in a complicated system I guess

Can Director do this?
