Unless you have CrossOver Mac installed or it is a self-expanding zip file, you need Windows to open exe files.

  • Can EXE files be used on the MAc?

I'm not sure if this is in the correct category, but I am trying to download a program (Rhapsody) that I used on the PC. Whenever I click to download it (there are no OS options but it system requirements it says Mac OS 10.4 or higher) it automatically goes into my downloads as an .exe file. I was under the impression that .exe files are for Windows and not the Mac.
If I did try to open a Windows file, would it crash the Mac?
Also, someone recently told me that an intel mac is not a real mac and intel is made by Microsoft... I have never heard of this. He said that intel macs don't work the same as "real macs" and I could have problems because it's intel. Is that correct? Is my Mac Mini version 10.5.8 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo a Mac 10.5 or a Mac intel, I am confused about this.
    Thank you!

.EXE files will work with Intel Macs running virtualization. Boot Camp is prebundled with Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6, allowing you to boot into Windows, if you have a copy of Windows to install on your Mac that is compatible with that version of Boot Camp. Additional virtualization titles are below*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
That said, your statement here is a bit of a oxymoron:
Whenever I click to download it (there are no OS options but it system requirements it says Mac OS 10.4 or higher) it automatically goes into my downloads as an .exe file.
The place giving you that download has either mislabeled the download, or is missing the download. At minimum, it should have bundled a .dmg, .gz, .sit, or .hqx document to run on 10.4. Virtualization under 10.4 is available, but it is not going to run as Boot Camp, because 10.5 is where Boot Camp is prebundled. You'd have to use Parallels, Virtualbox, or VMWare to install the .exe under 10.4 on an Intel Mac. Since you have 10.5.8, you already have Boot Camp capaibility. One problem people might run into with Intel Macs, is older PowerPC applications that access PowerPC only drivers or plugins, or need Mac OS 9. Ask the place that makes the software, if it relies on such things. If it does, inform them that they are woefully out of date, as Macs started coming with Intel chips January 2006. Find an alternative software title in that event.

  • How to run .exe files with Virtual PC for Mac

Hey Guys, I'm new around here and with mac technology as well. Anyway, I have an iMac OS X 10.5.1 Leopard and I've recently purchased the Virtual PC for Mac 7.0.2 software. So I'd like to know how to use this program properly, because I need to run some executable files in my computer. It is confusing for me because I don't know how to get started, and I only get to the part when it says "OS not found, Install an OS on this hard drive".
Honestly I've no idea of what an OS is or where do I get that. So I'd really appreciate if one of you guys could tell me, step by step, what to do to use Virtual PC properly, and finally learn how to run .exe files on mac.
    Thanks in advance!
    Have a nice day!

Always nice to see new faces
Honestly I've no idea of what an OS is or where do I get that.
This brings up the second part of your problem. The first part is setting up either a proper Virtual Machine program like Parallels or VMfusion, or setting up a Boot Camp partition on your drive.
    http://www.parallels.com/
    http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
OS stands for Operating System. You are running Leopard 10.5.7 as an operating system on your Mac (MacOS X).
The second part of your problem - You will need a copy of Windows XP or Vista if you want to run Windows on your Mac.
There is at least one other solution for running Windows programs on a Mac. It's called "CrossOver" by a company named 'Codeweavers'. It's based on a project for "Wine" to be able to run PC programs on a Mac or Linux, without having to buy or install Windows. It works with a narrow subset of Windows programs so you would want to make sure the program you want to run is compatible with CrossOver before you buy it.
    http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/
In addition to all the above information, you need to upgrade your Mac to the latest 10.5.7 from 10.5.1. "Software Update" is located under the black Apple icon in the Menu Bar at the top left corner of your monitor. After you are updated you will want to update your Profile here so that it shows the proper OS version.
With your level of experience with MacOS X and the Windows OS's you should probably get some help from a local Apple store. They have an appointment system and do offer many types of help and training, and they can offer assistance with choosing the proper programs for you to purchase for your machine.
You are also welcome to continue to ask questions here, of course. You will want to ask your questions with different issues that come up in different threads so that the answers stay focused on the title of the thread.

  • Can exe. files be uploaded to play on a website

Hi, I am trying to get an exe. file of a slideshow to play on
my website. I cannot see it on my site and I get an icon asking for
a plugin, but I am not sure where I get plugins from. I clicked the
icon, but it did not help me. I am wondering if perhaps it is not
possible to play exe. files on a website.
Does anyone have a clue about this.
    Thanking you all.

    files on a website.
    Think about it.
We already have enough security problems with JavaScripts,
    even though
they usually run in a browser sandbox! Imagine what could
    happen with a
downloaded .exe file with full system access on a typical
    I-am-the-
    administrator-user-even-though-I-don't-know-what-I'm-doing-box.
OK, maybe we wouldn't have any security problems anymore
    then, because
the whole Internet would have been shut down and all
    connected Windows
machines been killed. What a peaceful world this could be ...
Another thing: .exe files are DOS/Windows specific. What
    should users of
other platforms do with it? The Web doesn't care about the
    used OS.
So in short: Use Web technologies to make your slideshow
    suitable for
the Web and forget the .exe file.

  • Can't save a windows file when opened on a MAC

A colleague is updating some Flash files. I copied them to a
DVD and gave them to her. She transfered them to the MAC. She can
open them, but she can't save them. Has anyone ever heard of this?
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Rick

I think sometimes when transferring files off of Windows
written media the permissions can get messed up. Can she save them
    with a new name?
Otherwise. In the finder (after copying off the DVD) select
an item and do get info.
At the bottom of the info window there should be a
permissions section. Make sure her account has read and
    write.

  • Can Excel files be opened by Numbers '08?

I have been trying to open an Excel spreadsheet in Numbers 'O8 with no success so far. All of the suggestions I've found on Apple Support Communities haven't worked.
Every time I try something, I'm faced with the notification that the file is "encrypted."
    Any suggestions?

Could the document be password-protected? Numbers cannot open password-protected Excel files, NeoOffice can.

  • Getting a .wps file to open on a Mac ?

My friend has not got access to these discussions and asked me to post this question for him ....... sorry if it's not the correct forum.
Here is the email he sent me:-
I have a number of documents stored on floppy discs and want to bring them up on my iMac G5 OSX v 10.4.11 computer. A friend transferred the documents to CD using his PC which handles floppy's and CD's. After inserting the CD into my computer all 39 documents come up in three columns of 13.
Two of the documents are .doc types, the rest are .wps. If I click on either of the .docs the printed document appears on the screen. If I click on any of the .wps's no printed document appear!!
How can I cause the .wps's to reveal their contents?
    Norman Wilson

    Hi Ian,
    This tip is from: DennisG
<I'm pretty sure that a .wps extension indicates a file that was created in Microsoft Works, not Word -- and that can't be opened in Pages. Your friend needs to re-save it in Word, RTF, or text format.>

  • When I download itunes, it's a .exe file but I have a mac.

Why is this happening? Also, when I go to any website on Google Chrome, it says the "certificate" is invalid. Help anyone?

    ERR_INSECURE_RESPONSE
Suggesting something weird is going on either with your java, or with certificate handling on the Mac. Or there's something going wrong underlying both issues.
Experimental advice. Perhaps try rebuilding your network preferences, as per the Rebuild network information section of the Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) section of the following document?

If you'd prefer to get a second opinion first, I might try posting over at the Snow Leopard community:

  • Can raw file be open in iPhoto'09?

    Please help!

The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every +model+ not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
So, what camera do you have?

  • Can I run a .exe file on a Mac?

I need to know know if it's possible to run a '.exe' file on an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X. There's a CD with an application I need to run. In the Finder it has the icon of the black computer screen with green letters and it's titled 'startCD.exe. It'll run on Windows but due to circumstances I need to run it on my computer. Any direction you can point me in will be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Maybe:
    http://www.codeweavers.com/
"CrossOver Mac allows you to install many popular Windows applications and games on your Intel OS X Mac. CrossOver includes an easy to use, single click interface, which makes installing Windows software simple and fast. Once installed, your application integrates seamlessly in OS X. Just click and run your application directly from the OS X Finder. Clicking a Windows file or document — including email attachments — will launch the appropriate Windows program, allowing you to work on the files. Best of all, you do it all easily and affordably, without needing a Microsoft operating system license.
Adding new Windows software is easy. Just place your install CD in your Intel Mac, and CrossOver will recognize it and offer to begin the installation process. CrossOver then completes the installation and configures your application to run on your Mac. That's all there is to it."

  • When I Load a .exe File, It Doesn't Open And Says, "Success".

Why Is This Happening? Next to the "Success." Word It has a picture of an X. Could someone please tell me what is going on? Thanks!

.exe files are for Windows, not Macs. You cannot use them on a Mac. You need to run Windows:
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • HELP!!!i can download files from the internet but i can not open them, help!

I am running mac os x 10.5 i can download files from the internet but adobe reader 9 keeps telling me they can not decode them,( Adobe Reader could not open 'dap93.exe' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged) (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). help!
    Message was edited by: kjsk8n

Adobe Reader does not open .EXE files, it opens .PDF files.  If you were on Windows I would tell you to fix the file association, but I have no idea how to do that on a Mac.

  • Adobe reader opening all Exe Files.

I believe I accidently set preferences so that all exe files are opened by adobe reader. Once I uninstalled Adobe reader all .exe files went back to normal. However on re installing Adobe reader all exe files have gone back to opening using adobe reader. When Reader was uninstalled I checked the registry for exe files and was told HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
should have a default value of exefile, which it does and then checked HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command which must have a default value of "%1" %* which it does. I can not change the registry while adobe reader is installed as the program regedit is an exe. Is there an Adobe register which I must change or another method I can use?
    Thanks if you understood that.

    If Vista, check this out:
