  • Can't change blending mode...

I imported a scanned image into photoshop, fiddled with the levels, and then imported it into Illustrator to Live Trace it, Live Paint it, and generaly flat in the colors for my comic.  All was going well until I turned on visibility on the backgrounds and realized somewhere along the line (probably in PS) the imported image had been set to Multiply.  I figure, no problem, I'll just change it.
Turns out it's on Normal, and I've selected every object, line, group, etc on that layer and all are set to normal (might have missed one, idunno).  Is there any way to rectify this without going back and starting from scratch?

    Wade,
Not sure how you are arriving at that photoshop  blending modes are read by Illustrator.  I tested this in CS5 original release, but have not since, and only tested .psd format. Have they finally fixed this one of few things that Corel Draw can do, but Illustrator cannot?
    From Photoshop:
See No Multiply in Illustrator. And anyhow what if a multilayered document with various blending modes, are you saying that Illustrator will honor all of them? Not sure why you are showing the transparency panel, did you possibly change the blending mode to multiply yourself, or do you have a method for getting this to work?

  • Photoshop Help Video - Can't Locate Katrin Eismann Blending Modes Video

I bookmarked a Katrin Eismann video on blending modes on May 7, 2010. I am trying to locate that video now, so far without success.
    Here's the former link: http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/?id=vid0012
As I recall, she showed a great example of how to isolate just a portion of a night time scene. As best I recall, the trees were colorful while everything else was black and white.
I have been hunting for a while without success. I believe it used to be associated with the help file. In fact it still is. If you search on Adobe's help for "blending modes" your first link is likely:
    Photoshop Help | Blending modes
And as you work your way though the discussion, you find this:
These examples show the result of painting part of the image’s face using each blending mode.
For a video on blending modes, see www.adobe.com/go/vid0012.
Does anyone know how I can locate this video?

This same non-existent link is still listed on various Adobe web pages, but alas, the page with the video no longer exists. This is obviously an error on the part of the (huge) Adobe website.
The best thing to do is to submit a bug report, and hope they fix it:

  • Figuring out Blend Modes .. ArgH!

I've read numerous tutorials and books on the subject of blending modes and the one thing that bothers me is understanding how they work with color to the point that I understand and can remember forever, without having to always toggle though all the blending modes to find the right one when I'm working.  I'm hoping someone / some where can explain it in a way that can be understood where as, when I'm working I can just select the specific blending mode I want without toggling though most of them ?

    StrongBeaver,
Be easy on yourself. Start by understanding one single (but representative) blend mode. That will give you the concept for other blend modes. The MULTIPLY blend is a great starter. Understand it and you're on your way. Below is a cat-and-dog-language explanation of it.
First, just what is being multiplied? It is basically color intensity (called color value). When rabbits multiply they INCREASE in number. Yet, when color values multiply, they DECREASE in value. Counterintuitive or a misnomer? Not if you realize that FRACTIONS are being multiplied.
Color value is popularly described on a 0-255 scale, with 255 being the maximum value---limited by the eye's capacity. In blending algorithms, the intensity scale is "normalized", as they say, to 0-1. Thus, 255 becomes 1, 192 becomes 3/4, 128 becomes 1/2, etc.
If you have a red pixel of value 128 and multiply it by itself, you get 128/255 x 128/255 = 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4. Since we like to verbalize color values on the 0-255 scale, 1/4 translates back to a value of 64.
I mentioned a "red" pixel above. But each pixel has THREE associated color values (red, green, blue). The multiplication takes place separately and independently in each of these color "channels". When two layers are multiplied, the red value at a given pixel site in one layer is multiplied by the red value at the same site in the other layer. Ditto for blue and green.
Saying that "two layers" multiply is not wrong, but it is too restrictive. Only the upper layer is put in the multiply mode. The pixels in that layer multiply with WHATEVER NET color value is visible BENEATH it. That could be another single layer or it could be a conglomerate of layers blending or otherwise interacting with each other.
More generally, then, one should say the upper layer blends with the substrate. It doesn't blend with anything above it unless that is called for by the above layers, Further, one can assign a blend mode to a paint brush, If Multiply is assigned, the color value painted on the layer multiplies with the existing color, again independently at each site and in each channel,
It should now be clear why Multiply darkens, The color value in each channel resulting from multiplication is always less than either inputs, except if one of the inputs is maximum, in which case the resulting color value is the same as the other channel value because that other value has been multiplied by 1.
The physical parallel to multiplying is a pair of filters, The first filter reduces white light incident upon it, passing a fraction on through which, in turn, is incident upon a second filter which passes along a fraction of the fraction.
You should next look at the "Screen" blend mode because it is so similar to the Multipl;y mode but produces the opposite result (lightens). In screening, the INVERSE*  color channel values are what get multiplied, and the inverse of that multiplication gives the resulting color value. The resulting channel value is always greater than that channel's input values (unless one of the inputs is 0 for which the resulting color value is that of the other input).
*In case the meaning of "inverse" eludes you, the inverse of a fraction (f) is 1-f. For example, the inverse of 1/4 is 3/4, and the inverse of 1/2 is 1/2. These inverses multiply out to 3/8. The resulting color value of 5/8 (the inverse of 3/8) is greater than either input (1/4 and 1/2), i.e. it's lighter.
Hey! that's two blend modes down. Or really three because the Normal mode is clear. Only 22 modes to go!

  • Blend Mode Selection in Photoshop minor difference between platforms

Guys you REALLY need to do something about this asap. I don't know if it's a mac/pc problem or if it's a CS6 problem. I have been working with photoshop on PC for the past 9 years or so. I recently had to switch to CS6 on Mac.
I can no longer place my cursor in the blend modes field and use arrow keys to quickly toggle through them to find the ideal mode. I used to be able to preview 15 blend modes in just 5-6 seconds and land on the ideal mode... and get on with my project. NOW i have to click this button and click again on each blend mode... lengthening my process by up to 2 minutes. This is an ENORMOUS problem for me as choosing blend modes is critical in my day to day design work.
See the menu right next to it where you can type in the opacity? I can put my cursor in there and use arrow keys to adjust values. Blend mode NEEDS to work this way too. And this is on a mac. You simply HAVE to do something here. productivity impacted severely.
Also.. this problem exists in After Effects CS5 on pc. Let's get it fixed there too. I will hand-write you a letter of praise and send flowers if you can do this.

That could be because some readers are blinded by the white background and shiny badge of MVP and Staff posts.
If not, then it's strange that nobody is interested in working out why the OP has the problem or how to restore correct behaviour to his/her installation.
I can tell you the rationale behind my post, if it helps. The original poster's real goal was to "...preview 15 blend modes in just 5-6 seconds and land on the ideal mode... and get on with my project."
On my Mac, I can certainly click in the menu and use the arrow key to go up and down, as conroy said. But what that does not do is apply the blend mode, unless I also press Return. But pressing Return kicks you out of the menu so you have to start the click/arrow/Enter cycle again, which is a long way just to try the next blend mode. So while the superficial reading of the problem says "I can arrow key through the menu, problem solved," it doesn't solve the real goal of "preview 15 blend modes in just 5-6 seconds."
But Shift+ can, because it saves so many steps over click/arrow/Enter (and because the native OS X pop-up can't do any better). So Shift+ was a more appropriate solution, and the original poster already said it solves their problem.
If you read the original post, I think what is really going on is a Windows/Mac switcher issue, not an unfixed bug. Windows and Mac pop-up menus work very differently. In Windows, you can enter text into a drop-down list directly and up/down arrow through the list without the menu actually popping up. (For a Mac example, see the Type tool Font and Size menus in the Options bar in Photoshop, which I assume are custom-coded. Compare to the Font and Size menus in Apple Pages or Keynote.) He switches to Mac Photoshop, and Blend Modes menu doesn't work that way. It might never work that way, because native Mac pop-up menus are much more mouse-oriented.
Now, if there is a verifiable bug in the menu, Adobe should fix it. You might want to make sure it's listed at the Photoshop Feedback site, and add it if it isn't there.

Is there a an available source online website or a book that describes and explains each blending mode in Ps & El??
This would be most helpful to me in wrapping my head around what they are about and what is possible.  Thanks.   Bill

  • Blend Modes not working in CS6

My blend modes aren't working. If I try to apply a blend mode, no effect.

Hi, Noel. I'm very new at this, so I'll try to give you as much information as I can. Using blend mode on the single merged layer was working for me several hours ago. My process was Gaussian bur on layer, blend mode set to multiply on layer, and then desaturate. When blend mode was working, desaturation looked kinda funny (something wasn't right). I'm following this tutorial: http://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/how-to-design-a-vintage-style-ski-poster-in-photoshop /
I tried adding a new layer under the old layer, but still not working. How do I set new layer as a background? I have no intent to save it as a partially transparent PNG.

  • Dynamic Link Blending Modes

    Hello Premiere Pro´s
Is there a way where an After Effects Dynamic Linked comp imported into Premiere Pro can preserve its blending modes to the outside layers in a sequence?
A little like the logic of the continuously rasterize option that exists in After Effects.

That´s what i was suspecting, but that feature would be a great add. ( Plus solving another workflow issue i´m having also with dinamic lynk. )
My feature is very heavy on the use of dynamic linking. And in this case i have a Premiere sequence "edit" that i would like to be imported into AFX via dinamic link - then compose FX on top and then re-import that AFX Comp into the same Premiere Project into a "final" sequence. But this workflow gives me loop redundancy problem that makes Premiere dont update its dynamic linking, unless i close and open the app.
So my second try was importing the "effects ae comp" into premiere and hope there could be some workaround where the blending modes could pass into dinamic link, like the logic of the continuously rasterize option.
But thanks for the reply and help, Jo.
    Regards

  • Quickly switching blending modes

in windows, you can select a Blend mode (Overlay, Screen, etc) and using the mouse wheel, select new ones.  However on a Mac, you have to click and select one everytime.  Is there some secret to achieve a similar quick switch like on Windows PS?  thanks

Try shift +/- with a tool selected that doesn't have a blend mode associated with it (eg. Move tool (v)). This will walk down/up the modes while previewing the change.
You can also click the blend mode in the Layer panel to give focus, and then use the arrow keys to cycle thru the modes. This won't preview the change until clicking return.

  • Can I sample a layer's "true" color despite its opacity and blend mode?

I'm doing some painting with a lot of layers set to different blend modes.  I find that every time I want to paint on one of these layers, I have to go to that layer, set the opacity back to 100, change the blend mode back to "normal" sample the color, then change everything back and continue painting.  I realize I can save a swatch for the color, but it can get confusing when you're using subtle color differences on multiple layers.  It seems like there should be a modifier key to the tool that samples the layers "true" color discarding opacity and blend mode.  Does this exist?  Thanks!

Perfect!  This is exactly what I'm looking for chris....I don't suppose there's any way to toggle the tool's "current layer/all layers" functionality on the fly so i don't have to go to the tool and select which mode I"m in each time is there?  I usually access this tool by just hitting "option" while using a brush.  Would be cool if i could set "Option + shift" to use the eyedropper in "current layer" mode.  Thanks for the speedy reply!

  • In Elements 5 I can no longer drop down menu for Blending modes

    Hi
Something has broken my Elements 5 or is it me? I load a Jpeg make a copy, click on copy layer the blending mode writing goes from greyed out to normal. If I now click on the blending mode menu to drop it down or darken it so I can use the up/down keys to change modes nothing happens. I'm using Vista all updated and Elements 5.0.2. Tried repairing it to no avail. Any Ideas? Cheers Terry

Hi Trish, Thanks for your help. I tried what you said and it worked but if I then reload the program without pressing ctrl-alt-shift (so it now reads in the new Prefs file which it produced when it closed down) it's doesn't work again. I downloaded a trial of Elements 7 and that work OK and if I click on the Elements 5 prefs.psp Elements 7 loads and works OK as well. So I'm flommaxed as to what is happening. I reckon some update of Windows has broken it. Looks like I'll have to upgrade. Cheers Terry

  • Separate blend mode for each clone source

If each clone source could have it's own blend mode (not to mention its own opacity and hardness) setting it would be more effective. The current blend mode setting in the clone source affects the preview only.
I often have to jump back and forth between Normal, Lighten, and Darken modes, and would like the convenience of clicking between sources already set to what I want.
    Thanks

What goes on in the new "Clone Source Panel" is unrelated to Tool Presets oddly. It would be possible, to optionally allow recording of the settings in the Panel, as part of the Clone Tool Presets. But they never bothered to do it. Its as if this feature was designed with no understanding of the importance of Tool Presets at all. This would solve your problem.
The shortcut for Lighten Darken and Normal are Alt > Shift > G, K and N, respectively. This may speed up your work.

  • Can I make custom blend modes with Pixel Bender 3d?

So it seems PixelBender does not work in GPU mode, which is essential in iOS.
I want to create a custom blend mode for adobe air in iOS and was wondering if it is possible with Pixel Bender 3d.

for the mesh, hexagon is actually better than photoshop. Since it can create the actual mesh. Though, you can import the mesh into photoshop so you can see it while you paint the texture.
The 3d creation portion of photoshop is still a bit limiting. (But my experience stops with CS5. I have not tried CS6 yet, so impovement could have been made)
The issue I have with hexagon is the amount of bugs in it. I prefer a more robust and more expensive alternative. But thats me
A free alternative is Blender. But I find the UI a bit outdated and hard to grasp. But again, thats me.
Generate your UV maps as you normally would then load them into photoshop and get painting. You may like other texture generating apps to go along with photoshop. Genetica is great for making tileable textures.

  • I can't set a layer blend mode to "Screen"

Hello, I'm new to Photoshop as of an hour ago (I've been using GIMP for 2 years).
I have a layer selected and I want to set the blend mode to "screen". However, the screen mode as well as several others are greyed out and won't let me select them. I'm using Windows 8 Home Premium 64 bit, and Photoshop CS6 Extended (Trial) 64 bit. I'm intending to get Adobe Creative Cloud tomorrow, but is the reason for this that I'm using the trial version? If not, what am I doing wrong? There is a screenshot below to show what I am talking about. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
    http://i1289.photobucket.com/albums/b504/thomasbowe34/ps_zpsc5e055f5.png

Took me a few second to figure out whats wrong. But the answer is, you're in the 32 bit mode. Changing the mode to 16 or 8 { (Image>Mode>8Bits/Channel) or (Image>Mode>16Bits/Channel) } will make it available.
