Can FCE Convert PAL-NTSC  And  NTSC-PAL ?

A recent post got me interested in this question. I believe Tom said it wouldn't though he may have been referring to something else.
I set up a new project to work in NTSC and imported a PAL video clip.
When put in the timeline the clip's frame-rate appeared to be in the NTSC 30fps standard. After rendering, the clip seemed to play normally.
Have I actually converted the PAL clip to NTSC or is something else occurring?
Ian.

Another query has arisen.
In the thread I alluded to, the JES Deinterlacer was stated to be able to do the conversion.
I downloaded it and converted another PAL clip to NTSC.
When I play it in an FCE project set for NTSC it works perfectly except there is a narrow black band all round the frame.
When I click on the clip and get item properties it says the frame size is 656x480 even though the JES was set to 720x480.
Could this be connected with the shape of the pixels?
However, what I find more puzzling is the fact that the quoted height of the converted NTSC clip is the normal 480 pixels so shouldn't I be getting a black border up each side but NONE ALONG THE TOP OR BOTTOM?
Following on from that is there any way I can make the JES provide frames that fill the frame? (I know I can use Motion to enlarge it by setting the Scale to 115).
Let me stress that I do not NEED to be able to convert - I am simply curious.
Ian.

Well, this question really belongs in the iTunes forum, which is where you will get fast answers.
Just go to iTunes Preferences.  Click on the General icon.  Set When you insert a CD to Ask to Import CD.  Click on Import Settings.  Set Import to MP3 decoder.  Make sure you're using Good Quality.
This should deal with your CD's.
With your current music, as long as it does not have DRM restrictions (older iTunes Music did), select the song, right click on the song (or group of songs), pull down to Create MP3 version.

  • Can iTunes convert a file and replace the old file with the new one?

I am trying to convert my wav files to Apple Lossless to save some space. How can I convert the files and make them replace the old files? Right now it just converts new files so that I end up with two files. I have thousands I want to convert and just replace the old ones.
I have an external program that will do it for me, however if I go that route then when my ITunes files are converted to lossless files I need to re-link the files as they show up with the ! showing they are missing. That would mean manually re-linking every song, which would take forever unless there is a way to mass re-link all the files.

iTunes does not see the newly created files as the same file because they are not the same file.  They are new, different files.  If you have a track that is 1234.wav and you create 1234.mp3 it simply isn't the same file and you can't trick iTunes into thinking it is.  iTunes will handle it as a brand new file.
Check Dougscripts web site for scripts which help modifying tag data.  However, I suspect you won't find any doing exactly what you want doing.  Some tag data are only accessible by iTunes itself.
As for playlists, there's things you can try though they may be more effort than they are worth.  For example, you could add a special code for each playlist to some element of a tag (e.g., grouping).  Convert the file, then make a smart playlist selecting for the code you added to the group of tracks in the old playlist.  If you have hundreds of playlists with a dozen tracks each this will be a grand nuisance.  If it is a handful of playlists with hundreds of tracks each this might be worth it.
Another way to preserve playlists would be to edit the .xml copy of the iTunes library file, replacing ".wav" with ".mp3" or whatever format you are using.  However, this won't help with play counts because that is only stored in the .itl copy of the file which you cannot edit.

  • Can Compressor convert my NTSC video to PAL?

I am trying to convert my NTSC footage to PAL. I was given a tip that the key is in the compressing stage and then use Studio Pro and burn a PAL DVD. Is this correct?
Thanks so much!!!! it really helps!!!

i saw you on the other forum.., you got fobbed off to this one.., actually you can 'convert' to PAL in both DVD Pro and Compressor..,
if you can use either at all you already know it.., do you know where the settings are in compressor.., (is your compressor working??).., an you load settings and assign a sourse and a destination.., if you ca do those things you can already 'convert.'
what ever, assuming compressor is working on your puter, open compressor and save a project name (give the project a name.) now in the
hit 'add file' (the icon, top left)
go to the settings/destination window (the window that covers the bottom left of your screen)
click the triangle that says 'apple'
click the triangle that says 'DVD best quality 120 minutes (if thats how long you want it.., as long as your movie is under this time your OK)'
drag that setting to the long strip in the window above (top right), check the sourse so you know where the file is going.
look in the inspector window and click the icon, second from the right, this is your encoding settings.
click, video format; change the setting to PAL.., check the frame rate has changed to 25fps
back at the window, top right, you will see 'submit.'.., hit that and it will send the job to the render window.., watch the magic
the same can be done from the inspector in DVD pro.
if this was too confusing, sorry, .., there must be some tuts somewhere.., try 'larry jordons' web site, or maybe 'peachpit.com'..??

  • Can FCP convert PAL to NTSC on capture ?

I have a miniDV tape that was shot in PAL and I'm trying to find out if I can use FCP 4.5 to convert the tape into NTSC to use in a movie I'm making. I'd rather no take the tape to an A/V store and have them convert it for me. I'm not sure if FCP can do this but any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this tape has the key video that I need to use for my movie. Thanks.

    Hi Rob.
As well as the Natress thing (great person, good service) you might like to try 'JAS Deinterlacing'. I think that's how it is spelt. I use it all the time. It is free. And gives quite acceptable results. Run a Google on it.
The way it works is that you import your stuff in FCP in PAL and than export the clip or sequence as a QT reference movie (you know, don't click the 'self contained' box), import into Jas and away you go.
    Hope that helps.

  • How can I convert to NTSC color space?

I'm developing graphics for a Roku application which requires that colors be broadcast safe in the SDTV NTSC color space. For instance, I cannot have true white or true black colors. They are not allowed.
There is an RGB color space available. When I create a new document in CS6, I can select that profile as the color space. However, I am still able to paste in images that have pure white in them. When I save the document for web & devices, it still saves with the pure white.
I'm positive I've done this conversion in the past before, but I cannot get it working in CS6. I've tried going to Edit -> Assign Profile and Edit -> Convert to Profile, but in both cases the colors I am dealing with still end up pure white.
    How can this be done?

    Hi,
See if Filter>Video>NTSC Colors makes any difference.

  • Can FCE convert PF24 (24p @ 60i) into true 24p?

I am looking at purchasing a Canon HF-S100 which can shoot in 24p @ 60i. I use FCE 4. Is it possible to have FCE4 or some other program take this footage and convert it to true 24p? If not, can it be done with FC Pro? Thanks for the help!
    Brian

FCE does not support 24p media. You need FCS. You would need to completely decompressed the media into another format. Compressor can do it. At high quality it's a very slow process.

I had a question about using PAL-tapes. Can I convert PAL-tapes into NTSC tapes?
I am trying to import my video that I shot with a PAL-tape. Is there a way to import my data into imovie?

    Yes.
Use a PAL camera to import the PAL tape.
Use JES Deinterlacer to convert to NTSC.
Create a new NTSC iMovie project.
    Import the converted movie.
Export to NTSC tape using an NTSC camera.

  • Converting PAL to NTSC and making a DVD

I have a couple of .avi files, some are in PAL and others in NTSC, I wanna make a DVD in NTSC mode, How can I convert the files?

    Hi
This is not easy and You need other programs to do this.
    .avi.
You can use MPEG-Streamclip to convert the AVI files so that QuickTime can play them
    and to streamingDV for iMovie.
This may work - I had great problems to get .avi into anything usably.
*PAL to NTSC or other way*
    A. Commersial DVDs - No Not at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (without copy protection)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL-DVD players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC-DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
    • MPEG Streamclip (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)

  • Editing PAL wmv clip and converting to NTSC

I have a 50 min clip (given to me by a client) which was captured in PAL, edited, and compressed as .wmv file; the audio rate is 44.1KHz, square pixel ratio. I need to edit in FCP and convert to NTSC. I've tried rendering in FCP after it's imported, converting to NTSC before bringing it in (probably at the wrong settings), and changing the sequence settings.
I can view it fine in the viewer, but once I put it in the timeline, the sound is completely unsynched (probably the 44.1 thing), which is why I changed the sequence settings to 44.1.
I did find the macworld article from March '06 on how to successfully transfer to PAL using Compressor 2 and will use that. Here's the link for those who want it:
    http://www.macworld.com/2006/02/secrets/marchcreate/index.php
Here's my question, do I first transfer the huge clip through flip4mac to make it a .mov, or do I put it through compressor? Or, do I edit it down to the 7 - 1 minute clips I actually need from the clip, export those using ???? and then do the other conversions?

Do you think the out of sync sound is due to the
    44.1KHz as opposed to 48KHz?
    No.
    I did try changing the
sequence settings to 44.1 bringing the exact clips
in, and then rendering (which should convert from
.wmv), but it was still out of sync. Doing it that
way, should I make the sequence settings 44.1KHz but
leave it PAL until I later do the compressor
    conversion?
I'd use flip4Mac to get the files to .mov's... then edit in PAL. Export the PAL sequence to compressor for the NTSC conversion.
I think once you get them to .mov's you're possibly home free with the sync problem. FCP just doesn't support wmv's... so that could be the sync problem.

  • How to convert my NTSC project to PAL?

Hi! I'd like know how i can convert my ntsc project into PAL.
I need finish a DVD for my client take to ANGOLA and there is PAL system. It is possible? My Encore is 2.0.
Or It is possible put my NTSC movie into PAL project and let encore transcode the movie? Thank you very much and sorry my english.

    You have several options.
1 - Create a new PAL project in Premiere Pro. Capture your footage in the usual manner, and as soon as it is in the project, hit the ENTER key to render it.
2 - Create an NTSC project in Premiere Pro, capture to NTSC DV footage, and export it out again.
    Close project.
Create new PAL project, import the NTSC clip & then interpret/conform the footage to the project settings.
3 - Set up an NTSC project, capture footage, export to PAL DV or MPEG-2 from Premiere.
4 - Use TMPGEnc Xpress 4 - it's standards conversion is very good.
5 - Use ProCoder, as Ruud suggests
6 - Use CCE SP if you have it.
I'd try as many different ways as you can, and view the lot to see what looks the best.

  • Converting HD NTSC to HD PAL

    Hi!
I have a 5 minute video that was created in HD (1920X1080) and it is in NTSC (29.97fps) and I need to get it to the UK for their local use. Is there anyway that I can out put directly in FCP from NTSC to PAL or can I use Compressor to do it? If so how? If not what applications or process can I go about getting it converted?
    Thank you.
    Kelvin

your best bet is to take it to a facilities house that have dedicated standards conversion hardware
if you can't stretch to that then the Natress Standards Conversion plugins do an excellent job
if you have no budget at all then Compressor also does an excellent job if somewhat slowly
failing that then yes, you can export a PAL copy using Export > Quicktime Conversion (but it won't be particularly pretty)
i beleive the freeware JES Deinteracer also claims to do a good job of standards conversion ... i have no experience of using it for such, and do not know if it offers any advantage over the quicktime conversion method, but you may wish to try it
