Can FCP upres DV footage?

I am looking to enhance the 24p-DV footage I shot by upresing it. I'm trying to make the video look good enough for a larger screen or an HD TV.
Is there a filter out there that can enhance the image somehow so that at a larger size it will look great?
Or is there a way to export in a higher res?
I know, it's DV and it can't bump up too much because it distorts. But what about the filters, man...

DV is DV, and cannot be improved upon. It is compressed 5:1 in the camera onto tape. Dropping it into a 10-bit uncompressed sequence will not make it look any better. The only reason people do that is to make the graphics or titles used with DV to look better.
In fact, dropping DV into an uncompressed timeline and rendering will add compression and make it look worse.

Can't import P2 Footage after 5.1.2 update

This one has me stumped. After updating to 5.1.2 I can not import P2 footage.
When I click on the import Panasonic P2 tab under the import menu, nothing happens. Then, I click on it one more time and the import window loads but there is nothing there (I see the dividing lines but there is no text or buttons to click...just a solid grey background).
Tried the usual...trashed prefs, rebuilt permissions, downloaded the full FCP update off of the apple website and re-installed.
Also pulled all my plug-ins out just in case it was somehow related to that issue.
Still nothing.
Also, searched this form, creative cow and HVXUSER...no one else seems to have this issue.
Any thing I am missing?

Dual 2 Gig G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Same problem here on two different G5 machines after installing 5.1.2. Love the new import tool - but 10-20% of our clips just won't import anymore. Done all the recommended clean-ups and like many others on this forum and CreativeCow...it just won't work on some 24PN clips.
Getting desperate as we have daily shows that go out and need to get the rest of those clips in so I'm looking for any workarounds at this point and hoping Apple has a fix soon. This is clearly related to 5.1.2 as the same clips were previously imported in 5.1.1 and are readable in the P2 viewer and even playable in the 5.1.2 P2 import window.

I can't see the footage in thumbnails in events or timeline unless I click it with my mouse but it is still playing.

For some reason I can't see the footage in the thumbnails in the event or timeline, the thumbnails are just blue. When I go over it with my mouse i can see it and it is still playing in the screen up top. Have I pressed something. Another thing is when I try and balance colour the orange line appears up top but doesn't seem to be redering. Saids it's idle. Is this connected to the thumbnail pics not showing.
Everything was working normally up until a few moments ago.
Anyway.

Start off with trashing your FCP X Preference files then re-boot.

Looks like .m4v to me.
iPad is the same. Do not use the Mac & PC compatible option. That makes .mp4 for PC compatibility.

Guess I'll answer my own question !! Picked up the Go Pro and the results are amazing , I ride a Harley and the footage is excellent with good sound , fired up iMovie , turned on the Go Pro and loaded it in no problemo !

Can FCP Beep When Done With A Task?

I used to use this feature in Photoshop when I had to work late, in case I fell asleep at the wheel. Can FCP play a sound when it finishes rendering something? Thanks.

FCE4 - can I convert HD footage to Standard Definition to put on a DVD

My Panasonic HD camcorder will only record in HD, with no option for Standard Def.
Can FCE4 convert HD footage so I can convert it as if SD and then transfer to DVD (rather than Bluray Disc).

You say that when you tried iDVD earlier you got jerky footage.
This sounds rather like the problem I discovered 18 months ago with my HDV camera.
Still shots were reck solid but any subject or camera movement (panning) resulted in unacceptable judder and shimmer.
There are 2 workarounds I eventually came across.
1. Use your camera to down-convert to DV-PAL as you capture and edit it as DV. However, if your camera can't down-convert you will have to use method 2.
2. Edit your AIC in the timeline. Then create a new DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic sequence. Copy your edited HDV/AIC to the new sequence. Do not alter anything. Render the sequence ..... this will take a long time - up to twice the length of the project. Then File>Export>QuickTime Movie (Not Self-contained).
However, if you use the QT Movie in iDVD you will get a squashed 4:3 movie, so first of all you must make QT stretch it out to its proper 16:9 dimensions like this:-
a. Open the exported movie file in the QT Pro player.
b. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties.
c. Select the "Video Track" and in the "Visual Settings" panel uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio".
d. In the "Scaled Size" box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.
e. The "Video Track" will have turned grey, so click it to make it blue again.
f. The opened movie file will jump to 16:9.
g. Close it with the red button and click Save.
If you haven't got QT Pro you may be able to export using QT Conversion to DV-PAL, changing the output size to 1024x576.

Yes.
Stack the 3 clips above each other in the timeline, select one and reduce its size.
Do the same with the others and reposition them on the screen.

1080p. Can FCP X work with it?

I have a client (wildlife researcher) who needs to create some QT files for a scientific project. He needs the highest frame rate possible (he has a prosumer camera that shoots 1080p) Can FCP X work with 1080p? I told him that 720p has the same frame rate but he would like the added resolution. What do I do?

Since FCPX will let you create a custom 1080p project with the following frame rate options:
23.98p, 24p, 25p, 29.97p, 30p, 50p, 59.94p and 60p
I would say: yes, FCPX will support a 1080/60p project for the highest available frame rate. However, realize that 1080p can be *any* of those listed frame rates. The only thing you can discern for sure by "1080p" is that the video is single field "progressive" and not interlaced.
1080/60p is unsupported in AVCHD (so far) so your camera will either deliver some other format, and not AVCHD. The highest supported format in AVCHD (again, so far) is 1080/60i.
Other 60p size formats larger than 1080 supported by FCPX are 2K and 4K.

Where can I learn how FCP references video footage?

I'm sure this is a basic (but perhaps involved?) question.
I've been learning and using FCP on and off for over a year. I've been using online tutorials and developing a basic knowledge of the program.
I just bought a new 27" iMac with two internal hard drives (the 256GB solid state drive, and a 2TB regular drive). Up until now, I've only ever owned computers with one internal drive, and have never even gotten into editing footage on an external drive.
I've installed FCS 2 on my new iMac, and now I need to transfer the projects I've worked on to my new iMac, along with the video footage those projects use. And I need to know what the best way to do this is. FCS is on the solid-state drive (of course). I'm sure I should put the footage I'm editing on the secondary 2TB internal drive. And maybe the project files, too? Or should they be on the solid-state drive?
Anyway, I really don't have a good understanding of what should be where, and what I need to be transferring, and how to make sure that FCP "knows" where to look for the footage I'm editing.
Is there a place in the manual, or a post here, or a FAQ, or somewhere where I can read about this and get a good understanding of it? This is something I need to know, anyway, so I will know how to backup and store projects that I might want to edit further in the future.
If it matters, I'm editing footage shot in AVCHD on a Canon camcorder. To date, all I've done is backup the actual AVCHD files on multiple drives, reasoning that if I had a crash I could edit the footage all over again. But I want to learn the proper way to do all of this.

When you "uncompress" AVCHD files
You aren't uncompressing. You are RE-COMPRESSING. AVCHD is compressed, and you can't uncompress that. But, you compress it into an editing codec...ProRes.

Not sure what you mean by that. There will be slight loss when you recompress, but nothing you'd notice. Transcoding, as it is called, is quite a normal process. ProRes is so well designed of a codec that you can recompress to ProRes again and again 10 times before you see any issues.

You can't. FCP doesn't work with AVCHD...it must be converted to ProRes.
My understanding is that FCP "looks" for video footage where it "expects" it to be based on how and where you imported it.
Yes. Once you set your Capture Scratch to your external drive, say MEDIA_01...FCP keeps looking for it there. If you move it, then FCP loses contact with it. Until you tell FCP where it is again.
Let's say I had my project saved, but somehow lost my footage. If I logged and transferred it again from the same AVCHD files, would it come out exactly the same so that (if I put it on the right drive in the right folder) my FCP project would work with it as though it was the original logged and transferred footage?
Yes....absolutely. The project file is the most important thing. Those clips in there point to the media. If the media drive dies, or the media is deleted, simply highlight all the clips and do a BATCH CAPTURE...FCP will look for the original SOURCE files, the AVCHD files, and then re-transcode them. And they will be exactly like the first time you imported them. And your cut will be rebuilt.

Yes. If you move the footage, rename the footage on the FINDER level, meaning opening the drive and renaming the raw footage, or if you rename the folder that they are in, FCP will lose the connection. Which is why you DON'T do that. Designate the Capture Scratch...import the footage, and only deal with the footage in FCP...until you really know how things work and how to get FCP to reconnect to this footage.

Can FCP log and transfer footage from the Panasonic full HD 1080p camcorder

Hi, my subject heading says it all. But I have read a review of the current consumer HD camcorders from Panasonic that says they have their own codec, and that it cannot be edited on any software but their own, which is not available in a Mac version... the review was a few months old, though, so hopefully Apple have now put in place updates so that we can ingest footage from this camera...
Does anyone know about this? If not, any idea where I can find out?

Sorry if you didn't know about this, but the review says that when recording at 1080/50p Panasonic uses a proprietory codec... I assumed that would be any model they produce that records at 50p.
The review of the Panasonic HDC-TM700 states "The camcorder uses traditional AVCHD compression for every shooting mode other than the 1080/50p setting. (my emphasis)<
If the reviewer doesn't know, how would we? We're FCP geeks, not universal camera knowledge base wonks.
Research the codec specifically and the camera model you are likely to find some kind of hack or workaround. I have two Panasonic hdx170s and we have absolutely no issues bringing in full 1080 from the P2 cards but most of our stuff is shot 720.
