Can files and folders be shared between 2 or more user accounts on the same computer?  If yes, how is this set up?

I want to have a second user account on my imac (OS 10.6) that can access folders and files in the first user's account and the reverse.  I also want both users to have access to the same Safari and Firefox bookmarks.
Can this be done?

Sure, you just have to set the permissions to do so.

It should be in the Users/ Shared folder.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Note the option to check and repair Library Permissions

  • How can I transfer a local mailbox to another user account on the same computer?

I have two user accounts on the same computer. I actually never really wanted two accounts, but a second one was generated when I chose to use the Migration Assistant to transfer my account from a previous computer to my current one, and I never did anything to delete the second one. Anyway, I have been using Mac Mail to view my work email messages from a Microsoft Exchange server. Awhile back, I was running out of space on my mail server, and decided to download a bunch of my email messages to local mailboxes in order to free up space.
Recently (for reasons that are not terribly relevant) I have decided to switch between the two user accounts on the computer. I have transfered all of my documents, apps, etc. to the new account. However, I haven't been able to find a way to transfer all the email that is in those local mailboxes, so that they are viewable/usable in the new account. Could somebody suggest the best way for me to do this? I am no longer going to use the old account, so the two do not have to be synced. I just want the mailboxes to be available for the new user account (with the same organizational structure).
I am currently running Mavericks (just upgraded last week).
    Thanks,
    JEG

    A quick update....
I copied the folder in ~Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes that contains all of my local mailboxes over to the same location in the new account. When I go into mail, the entire file structure is there, however it does not let me view (or search) any of the messages. The messages can be accessed through the Finder, though.
I tried to "Rebuild" the local mailboxes, but it didn't seem to do anything. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • How do I share music between user accounts on the same computer?

My wife and I have separate user accounts on the same MacBook Pro so that we can both sync our phones to this computer. My account is the primary user account, and my iTunes library is stored in this account. My wife would like to put music on her iPhone so she can run, but I can't seem to access the music library thru her account. I know the files are all on the hard drive regardless, so I just need to know how I can make iTunes on my wife's account access the library that's there. I've tried the steps I could find on Apple's website, but I can't seem to make it work. I'm running the latest versions of everything - even tho the post says I'm running 10.9.1, I'm actually running 10.9.4

To give other users read-only access to your iTunes library, use the Sharing features of iTunes. Sharing works over the local network as well as on the same computer. See the built-in help for details.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support article linked below.
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

  • How do I share new purchased itunes content automatically between multiple user accounts on the same computer?

I have 3 different user accounts set up on the same computer. Whenever one of us buys or downloads anything, how can I get that to be automatically available for each of the other users? The main itunes library is stored at users/shared/itunes, but this doesn't seem to help much. As far as I can gather, Home Sharing only works between computers, not between users on the same computer......

    camillafromchichester wrote:

is that the iTunes folder or just the iTunes media (or music) folder ?
what should work is if the entire iTunes folder were in the shared folder and iTunes on each user account would access the same library file
launch iTunes on each user account (one at a time) while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder you copied to the shared folder.
if user A adds content, this will be available to the others immediately when they access the library, however, only one iTunes at a time can use the library. if you're using fast user switching, user A must quit iTunes before user B can fire it up.

  • Move an iPhoto Library to another user account on the same computer - File Permissions Error

I am having trouble moving an iPhoto Library from one user to another.   I copied the library to a shared location, then on the same computer I switch to the other user only to find that there is a little red - in a circle on the folder.  I am unable to do anything with the folder.  I have checked the "Get Info" and permission to read and write is selected for all users.  From everything I have read I should be able to just copy the Library to any location I would like and then open the Library on other computers.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Further information: I am running on OSX Lion (10.7.3) with iPhoto 09 (8.1.2).  I have my iPhoto Library working in the account of an admin on the computer. Unfortunately I have redundant users on the computer and want to consolidate everything to the original user on the computer, or the user that set up the computer originally.  This "original" administrator cannot be delete so I am moving everything from user "B" into the "original" administrator on the computer.

Because I had no idea what I was doing! :-P
I see now that I needed to move the library into the new user's Pictures folder, not import it.
My biggest problem was that I couldn't get rid of that dumb red circle. I think this happened because I just moved the user's Picture folder into the Shared folder before adjusting the permissions. Of course, I'm a bit like a kid trying to explain how the rocket got the moon. I could be mistaken...
Still, here was the work-around that worked for me:
    - go into the user with the iPhoto library ("first") that I wanted to move to another user ("new")
    - right click on the iPhoto library file, located in the in "first" user's Pictures folder
    - unlock the folder and then change the permissions to allow everyone to "Read & Write"
    - copy the iPhoto library into the "Shared" folder
    - copy the iPhoto library into the "new" user's Picture folder
Because I didn't want two copies of that library, I then deleted it from the "first" user's Pictures folder. I assume iPhoto will just create a new one, which in my case will remain empty because that user doesn't use iPhoto.

  • Firefox just started to do this if on one user account someone has firefox running another user account on the same computer can not connect to the internet through firefox while firefox is running in the first user account

    Windows XP/Windows 7
2 user accounts on the computer. If each acct is logged into the computer and tries to have firefox running only one can connect to the internet at a time. Have Verizon FIOS for ISP and this just started to occur. Firefox version 8 but also happening in firefox 6.0.2. How can we run firefox in two computer accts at the same time? Thank you

I am having exactly the same problem. This worked on all versions of Firefox up until mid last week. It started failing on Wednesday, coincident with the installation of Firefox 8.0 (see attached gif showing the automatic update on that date).
To fix the problem, you have to shut down Firefox 8.0 on one account, switch to the other account and then you can run it there.
If Firefox 8.0 is running on on account, the other account will run Firefox, but when you enter an URL it waits for quite a while then reports "The connection was reset. The connection was reset while the page was loading".
We also use Thunderbird 8.0 and it does not exhibit this problem, and works at the same time as Firefox 8.0. I suspect they might share some components.
I'd be happy to supply more details if needed.
    Thanks,
    Ed

  • ITunes sharing accross Mac OS user accounts on the same computer?

I have a new late 2013 27" iMac with individual user accounts set up for each member of the family.  What do I need to do to enable sharing of a common iTunes library accross all the accounts on this machine?  I'd like for everyone to be able to add, delete, purchase, organize, create playlists, etc. in a single common iTunes library.  Thanks in advance for any help with this question.

Chris CA's instructions on sharing iTunes music libraries between multiple user accounts - http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8973804
I hope you all trust each other...
Again note, with this method you can only have one person using iTunes at any one time.

  • How can i have my 2 i phones on a seperate apple account on the same computer.

I have two i phones my own and my wifes on my i tunes account but want to have them seperate on the same laptopas currently cannot use i message as i send an i meesage from my wife to myself. I am sure others have had this problem.

No one got any ideas ? Have i explained my problem well ?
I guess another way of phrasing the question would be if I were to re-format my hide drive and re-install everything, what files would I need to save in order for my itunes to work in exactly the same way and have the same settings as before the re-format.

  • Sharing iTunes Library Among Multiple User's on the Same Computer

OK, so I've followed the instructions in iTunes article HT1203 to set up my laptop to share a common iTunes library but for whatever reason it won't open. Here's what I did:
Backed up the iTunes library to DVD from the old system
Restored the DVD to the new laptop
Located the iTunes folder in \Users\Dennis\Music\
    Dragged it to \Users\Public\Public Music
    Opened iTunes
Editted the Preference Advanced tab to change the location of the music folder to \Users\Public\Public Music
    Closed the preferences
No music is displayed. I know it's there because when I opened iTunes BEFORE I moved the folder it showed all of the music titles I was expecting to see.
I even went out and changed the Security on \Users\Public\Public Music to Full Control for all users (only two) and it had no effect. What am I missing?
    Thanks for you advice.

iTunes always uses the last ITL databse file it used from before, unless it can't find it....in which case, it makes a new library ITL file that's blank.
When you dragged the ituness folder to the public foder, I think it confused itunes.
Try a shift-start of itunes and select the ITL file in the public folder.
Press *AND HOLD* the shift key while starting itunes until you see a prompt to choose or create a library. Browse to that public folder and choose its ITL file.

  • Home Sharing - Can you share between two accounts on the same computer?

I haven't been able to find any info about this, but does home sharing allow you to share files between to different user accounts on the same computer? I have been struggling with trying to do this for years, and I'm really hoping this solves my problem.

This is true in a sense; you have to use the same itunes account to activate home sharing. BUT, you don't need to use the same itunes account for general use.
    Example:
My computer and iPhone has one itunes account.
My wife's computer and iPhone have a totally separate account.
I turned on Home Sharing on both machines using one account name and ID - mine.
Now she can see and copy my music and apps, etc. I can see and copy her music, apps, etc.
However, when she goes to the iTunes store, she still can buy and so forth *on her own account*. Same with her iPhone. And I can still do the same as well on my own account on my machine and phone.
The only limitation seems to be updating apps: If you copy apps over to another machine using Home Sharing and install them on another phone running another account, it works great. But you can't seem to update those copied apps, unless you log in on the phone or the computer it syncs up to with the account it came from.
Aside from that, the apps still work even when the computer it was copied to and the phone it was synced to are active on ANOTHER account.
The key is the setup - for Home Sharing. That needs to be one account, but otherwise it's business as usual.

  • Sharing calendars between accounts on the same computer.

Is there a way to share and automatically update a calender between user accounts on the same computer with out publishing it to the web?

A quick update: with the December 31, 2007 release of BusySync version 1.5, users can now additionally synchronize iCal calendars outside of their existing subnet using procedures which are outlined here.
In addition, Mark/Space has announced that a Mac OS X 10.5 and later update will he forthcoming for SyncTogether, which is not currently compatible with that OS release. A public beta of the updated application will be available here on or before January 31, 2008.

can you have 2 itunes account on the same computer?

Yes, go to your Windows Control Panel and create another user, log into it, run iTunes and it's ready to rock and roll.
Transfer your content over via USB Key, Dropbox or external drive.
Heck the best thing would be to File > Backup library to disk with a bunch of DVD-R's, therefore you get a backup in the process!
    Good Luck
