Can finally afford to upgrade & need advice

I'm looking to upgrade my eMac 700mhz/128 all original inerts
and running OSX 10.1.5 still.
I want to get up to speed with Tiger or the new Leopard coming soon. What do I need to install, hardware wise, to be able to run it effectively?

You will first definitely need to add RAM. Get a 512MB DIMM from Crucial and install it using the nVidia graphics model eMac instructions at eMac - Do-It-Yourself.
There's a handy guide to upgrading to Tiger in Gulliver - Tiger Upgrade Guide. If you don't have Disk Warrior 9as recommended in that guide), be aware that the Disk Utility version in Tiger 10.4.2 and later is far more capable than earlier versions. After booting from the Tiger Install disk, before actually beginning the install, you can use that disc's Disk Utility to run Repair Disk on the hard drive to make sure the drive is OK.
How much free space is there on the hard drive? You'll need 5GB or more to do an Archive and Install update to perserve your user data and settings.
A current backup of your data, on either an external Firewire HD or onto CD-R, is a near-essential (whether updating or not).
Does your eMac have a DVD-ROM/CD-RW or a DVD-RW/CD-RW optical drive? Tiger OS X 10.4 comes on DVD, so you'll need an internal DVD drive, or an external Firewire DVD drive (from which you can boot using Startup Manager), or you'll need to contact the Apple Store and ask about the Media Exchange Program (for small fee, Apple would in the past exchange the Tiger DVD for a set of CDs; that program expired and was extended about six times; I don't see it mentioned in the Apple Store website, but a phone call might get a helpful response).
You'll need to update any third-party disk utilities you might have for 10.1.5; see Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes.
The upgrade is well worth it; the difference in responsiveness and stability between 10.1.x and 10.4.x is quite impressive. Good luck!

If you wish to run both the version on the same machine. It's not a supported configuration as Version 9 and X Pro share the same namespace and you may run into issues which would be hard to fix.

What can I do? I don't really care about the new MobileMe options at the moment but need to be able to access my website and gallery for posting client photos. I have a new MacG4 at work but would like to be able to use my older one at home to still access everything. I still have to install iLife 08 at home, but use it at work a lot!
Is there anything that can be done and will my04 iMac be able to handle the upgrade if that's my only option?

Some G4 iMac models can only be upgraded to Tiger (10.4) while later G4 iMac models can be upgraded to Leopard. Unfortunately, you haven't provided sufficient information to know which model you have.
Open System Profile in the Utilities folder. Look for the Machine ID in the Hardware Overview information. If it says Powermac6,1 or higher then it can be upgraded to Leopard if you have at least 512 MBs of installed RAM.
Tiger is no longer available from Apple so you would need to purchase it from a third-party such as eBay or FastMac.com. Leopard (10.5) is the current version and available directly from Apple or a local Apple retailer.

The name of Artist can't be find? Need advice!

I have Ipod Classic 80GB and I do experience problem to find the name of few artists after transferring them on the Ipod. They appear on Device/Ipod/music/artist on my iTunes but I can't find the artist by Search on the Ipod. If I search by Album the Album and artist are there. Some of the Albums appear on the Compilation menu even the album is not compilation. It's kind of annoying if you have 80GB music and you can't find somebody. Any ideas how to solve it. Thank you in advance!

There are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song has no album name associated with it or 2) the song is marked as part of a compilation.
If tracks are missing an Album name in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances (for instance I read somewhere that if you have at least two tracks with different album names the rest will appear), however the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous to all the blanks in place of a title. Also if the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. Setting "Compilations" on your iPod main menu prevents you getting lots of single artist entries when you load an album by various artists.

Firefox 5 won't work with Mac OS 10.4, but I can't afford to upgrade the system; how can I keep using Firefox 4?

This computer is an eMac running the Tiger operating system. Rather than upgrading the entire system, which is costly and time-consuming, is there simply a way to keep using the previous version of Firefox?

Firefox 3.6.28 is the latest version of Firefox that works on 10.4. [[Firefox no longer works with Mac OS X 10.4 or PowerPC processors]] You unfortunately have a PPC processor, so the only way you can use modern software is to purchase a new PC. Or, you can try using [http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/]. But please note that you will be using a community project that may or may not work.

IDvd 4.01 & QT/Final Cut Pro Exports, need advice

Hi,
In tests with small Quicktime exported movies from the timeline in Final Cut Pro 4.5 -- meaning NOT making a full, new self-contained QT movie but just a smaller "reference" file -- I was able to burn fine 2 and 5 minute tests.
When I got to a longer (45 min) completed FCP timeline, and tried the same thing (dragging the exported reference file to iDVD), I had problems. Ran it overnight, and in the morning it was still in stage 3, and when I tried to stop it the whole computer crashed.
It takes FOREVER for FCP to export a longer fully self-contained quicktime movie...I am wondering if anyone has any info/advice on whether idvd:
-- has trouble working with these QT 'reference' files when they have to use/
access rendered media in Final Cut pro.
-- If it is worth the time to make a fully self-contained "separate" quicktime
movie from Final cut pro before dragging it for iDVD to encode for DVD

Well a 45 min movie - to be coded as mpeg2 to a DVD disk takes time.
on a dual G5 2GHz - about 60 min
on a single G4 600MHz - about 10 - 20 hours
make a diagram and find out what would be relevant to Your set-up.

CAN'T UPGRADE BECAUSE CAN'T AFFORD FC STUDIO, SO OTHER PROBS ARISE!

This is a problem which is building one step at a time, and it begins with OSX upgrades. I had to stop at 10.4.8 because - as a long-time user (professionally) of Final Cut Pro, upgrading beyond that renders many aspects of my version (4.5 HD) useless along with DVD Studio Pro, Compressor, etc. (those bundled with it). I found out the hard way, and had to downgrade back to 10.4.8.
However, now items such as my Address Book, iCal and Mail - which I use because of the compatability issues we all used to love about Macs, are not sync-able on .mac. The systems says I must have the 'latest version' - which is part of the new operating system (which I can not upgrade to!)
Therefore my .mac account, my ability to access the info I need when at a remote location, all are stuck in the water because Mac will not 'support' Final Cut Pro 4.5HD... I appreciate how good Final Cut Studio is: I have purchased it for school's I work with and used it myself at work locations, but personally, the $699.00 upgrade to FC Studio is not feasible for me at this time. The $199.00 upgrade was offered only until March of this year - and it was not brought to my attention until it was too late and unaffordable.
Does anybody have any ideas? I am looking for solutions.. and appreciate your input.

Thanks for the input; you are all correct - especially Gig - in that FCS is a significant upward change. I have used it, purchased it for some schools and kick myself every day i didn't get the 199 update info in time. i know they offered it for a while, but I was changing residences and missed out. I begged Apple to make an exception, but they refused. It's business. Truthfully, i need to just suck it up and get the FCS and yes - more gigs, Gig!
For now, live with my woes...most of work currently is done through a day job in the business, so my side businesses are not the priority any way. As you said G, I am sure I could make it back fairly quickly...

Most of the time I ONLY have 1 thing open at a time, and keep my tabs down to a minimum. I bought this to do film editing on but with it acting like this I cannot do that. I know I need a ram upgrade (currently running 2 gb) and my OS is old, 10.5.8, but I think even with it being a bit outdated it should run better than this. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve this? Or any other suggestions to keep this clunker chugging along for a little while longer?

How full is the hard drive?
Do you run any virus software or hard drive "cleaner" software like MacKeeper?
If your model is from 2007 you can install up to 6 GBs of RAM.
2 GBs is the barest of minimum RAM for OS X to run on.
Especially if doing video work. You simply do not have sufficient RAM.
Also OS X 10.5.8 Leopard support ended around 2009.
You could update to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, at least.
It is available on disc from the Apple store for U.S. $19.99.
I Would seriously upgrade your iMac's RAM to the max. 6 GBs before doing this.
Reliable Mac RAM can be purchase from online Mac RAM source Crucial memory or OWC ( also known as macsales).

Okay, that's got one thing ruled out at least.
Can you check something for me, big? I'd like to see if iTunes launches with the Bonjour Service disabled.
In your Start menu, right-click Computer and select "Manage".
Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Perhaps maximise the screen to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the Bonjour Service and select "Properties".
In the General tab, set the Startup type to "Disabled":
... and click OK.
Restart the PC and try launching iTunes. Does it open this time?

I'll try to make this clear. I USED to be able to left click on a hyper link and the hyper link would open in a NEW tab. Now for some unknown reason the hyper link by default opens in the same tab (window). I have to right click the hyper link in order for it to open in a NEW tab. (Yes, my 'tools'> 'options'> 'tabs' are set to "open new windows in a new tab." (Please no answers telling me to get rid of the Ask toolbar because I don't have one.) Thank you.

I don't think adobe offers an upgrade path from photoshop album 2.0, but you can find photoshop elements
12 cheaper at your local box store than even the adobe upgrade price.
They are both the full versions anyway.

Photoshop was the last version compiled for the PPC cpu, not Intel. 10.6.8 kept it going with the Rosetta emulator, gone since 10.7.
So, no CS2 won't work under 10.10
CS6 (permanent license) or Lightroom and Photoshop | Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan is the way to go.
