Can Flex be used to create simple games?

Hi. I'm thinking of creating some simple games for children 6 - 10 years of age.The games can be things such as drag-and-drop and multiple choice. I'd like to store the results on a database. Can I use Flex Builder to do this or do you recommend Flash? Can you point me to a resource on this?
The reason I ask is that I've built web apps using Flex and have some basic experience with Flash. Will building games be very challenging if I have to use Flash? The project in question will start in January and have to be completed by the end of March 2010. Thank you.

As per your description for games Flex should be fine. It also depends on the skills and experience you have in the technology.

I don't aim anymore to publish on phones since each new OS has its XNA, Apple or Chrome development tools, but I am amazed how user-friendly and respectful and full of kindness I have been recieved by 2 or 3 pople from the community. Can Cp4 be used to create a course with chapters?

I've been using Cp4 to create short courses or topics. The students have to open each topic as a separate CBT. Can Cp4 be used to create an overall course with separate chapters, or links, per topic?
I was considering having a student log into the overall course and then see a screen with a separate link per topic inside of that overall course. They would be able to select whichever topic they need and they don't have to necesarily take the entire course.

Creating simple game map

Hi,
I would like to know that what can be used to create a simple game.. VERY SIMPLE game.. not 3D or Java 2D api used i guess..

A board with lots of circles (which user can draw) representing territories and links (editable) between the territories representing paths between territories ...
I jsut need to know what can be used to represent a territory? a JLabel? a JPanel?
The state of these objects(territories ) will change over time and so does the links i.e. the paths between the territories.
I just need to draw the map.

If you are writing an app with that sort of GUI you are going to have to bite the bullet and learn the 2D graphics API: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/2d/index.html

Can Muse be used to create html newsletter templates to be emailed?

I need to create a newsletter template and save it as HTML to be sent out using one of the standard email host programs. Can Muse be used for that? I tried setting it up in InDesign and exporting it as HTML but the result was a mess. Thanks!

Sounds complicated ... I know html formatted emails are tricky to make it work in several email clients ... but, it's possible.

I am completely out of my depth here, but I am looking to purchase a program that can be used to design my own online questionnaire. I would like the following features:
1) abbility to generate followup questions (guided by input)
2) hyperlinking / "hover over" help to guide answering the questionnaire
3) Dropdown boxes / databases to provide choices for answers
4) Be able to generate reports from the answers given
5) add images and perhaps sound bites

Thank you for your input. I downloaded a trial of Captivate 4. It is indeed impressive. However, I do have some difficulty figuring out how to branch my questions, (exclude certain questions depending on prior answers).
Also, is there a way that would accomplish the following:
Q1: Do you have high blood pressure?
A: Yes
B:No
Q2: Is your blood pressure well controlled?
A:Yes
B: No
Can one generate a predesigned form or report (Certificate) that will read (amongst other responses) as follows:
"Mr Smith has hypertension that is poorly controlled".
If Q2 was answered as "yes", then the report will read:
"Mr Smith has hypertension that is well controlled."

Can flex be used in a procedural rather than descriptive way?

My company is currently using Flash Studio 8 successfully.
We'd like to upgrade to Studio 9 to get ActionScript 3 but God
knows when that will happen. Anyway, so now we are looking at flex
since it can produce stand-alone .SWF files. There may be other
advantaged to flex too since it uses XML which plays nicer with a
source code control systems.
I've used Laszlo before and it didn't work for us. Laszlo
forces you to structure the control hierarchy to reflect your data
hierarchy. This works very well in simple and regular cases but can
be a nightmare in very complex data relationships with a lot of
special cases. In effect, Flash Studio works like a procedural,
third generation language. Laszlo work like a fourth generation
language which is more descriptive than procedural.
Anyway, I called Adobe support and discussed this with one of
their experts and he told me that Flex had constraints similar to
Laszlo. In spite of this comment, I still started looking at Flex
2. After spending a day on it, it seems to me like he is wrong and
I can do what I am trying to do with it.
So, here is my question. I'd like to use Flex to create flat
(where all the controls are at the same level) (in effect) resource
file, like I'd do in Studio 8. I'd then like to control the
behavior of the screen with ActionScript code. So, I should be able
to handle an arbitrarily complex data and user response scenario
with a simple Flex (the GUI part) layout and supporting procedural,
ActionScript 3 code in separate .as files. Am I correct?

I think I was seeing this same issue, but I wasn't able to pin it down as well as you have - thank you for that. My workaround was to find a way to keep lexicals out of the 'group by' also. I'm sure this won't be adequate all situations though.
Maybe you could try running your data template on different versions of BIP? I noticed that I could get results by running my DT throught the DataProcessor Java api in my (newer) BIP Desktop when, with the same data template, I got no results (zero rows returned from sql) when I tried it in EBS (v 5.6.2).

Can iWeb Be Used To Create and Edit Completely Seperate Web-Sites/Pages?

Is it possible to use iWeb to create completely separate web-sites/pages? As far as I can tell even what is called NEW SITE simple creates a new nested SITE folder.
I want to use iWeb to edit totally separate web-sites.
I want to be able to make a single word change on my home page without having to upload and replace my entire site.
My work around for example would be to keep my Photo and Movie Album separate (where most of my memory intensive files reside)from the part of my site which is mostly text. And when I make a single word change to my home page I would simply upload that page. I would have a link from my home page to my Photo and Movie Album - much like I edit web-pages in Dreamweaver.
Any suggestions?

Can Muse be used to create a site that requires a CMS with multiple user accounts?

Hi, I am new to Adobe Muse and I would like to understand some specific things about the software. I have been comissioned to create a gallery website which requres a cms for use with mulitple accounts for the users/ artists to display seperate profiles and submit work to. Does Muse have this functionality and if possible to answer, how would I do this? I have looked at the tutorials on Adobe for Muse but I have not seen anything related to this, only the Busines Catlalyst website management software (if indeed it is software). Are there any tutorials on this or could I please be directed to one if no direct answer can be given here as I appreciate it is quite an indepth question. Thanks..

Why can't I use my keyboard in games?

When I play games on my Macbook Pro (internet or downloaded) my keyboard doesn't work. Can someone help me with this?

1) Saying that Logic recognizes your interface because your lights blink when you play does not make sense to me. Have you successfully used this interface with anything else?
2) Have you installed the driver for your interface? Is it the latest version, compatible with your OS?
3) Have you set up the interface in AudioMidi setup, which is an application in your utilities folder?
Didn't mean to be patronizing, but it does seem that you are missing some basic information regarding the setup of your system, which can typically be solved by a genuine effort with the manual, or the install readme that comes with your interface. Maybe you have done that, maybe not. Many people just want someone to give them the answer without having to do the work, and suggesting that you read the manual is always the first step when dealing with a new setup.

I am not personally familiar witih BACnet, but I did a little research. It looks like there are 3rd parties out there that provide OPC servers for BACnet. This would be the easiest way to communicate with your device. LabVIEW can act an OPC client through datasocket or with Shared Variables using the Datalogging and Supervisory Control Module (DSC). If you're looking for something more low-level, you might try some driver-level calls, although I'm not sure what to call to be honest. I don't think the regular TCP/IP VI's in LabVIEW will work unless BACnet uses TCP.

Understanding Flex: Can it be used without Flash-knowledge, and some other questions

Hi.
I'm trying to understand how Flex works. My understanding is
that Flex is like the integration link between Flash-content and
.NET-applications on the web. We need rich interface on our
.NET-applications - without ActionScript-coding required from the
programmer's side.
Can this be acheived with Flex alone?
What is Coldfusion required for? Can Flex be used without it
to create the rich web interface?
Are basic components included and ready-to-be-used? What if
special components are needed? E.g. multi-level menu-tree or some
special data grid. Can this be developed by a Flash-programmer and
used as a "generic" component?
My reason for choosing this would be that we easily can
acheive great web-layouts that are Flash-based, and that interact
with our .NET-applications. Is this the product I'm looking for?

It is absolutely possible to create complex custom components
in Flex and without FlashPro.
Flex can communicate with the server in several ways.
WebService: SOAP-based
HTTPService: XML over HTTP, (like REST and AJAX)
RemoteObject: uses proprietary amf protocol, needs Java or CF
on back-end
There are some others like URLLoader and sockets.
Unless you need your back end functionality to be generally
available to anonymous third parties (hence the wsdl), WebServices
are unnecessarily complex.
I prefer HTTPService, I post xml strings in the normal
name=value format to the server and use e4x xml as the resultFormat
in flex.
Even though you said "roughly", that is still an impossible
question to answer, there are too many variables: On the back-end,
do you need to install a database? Create the schema? or is some of
that part done already? On the front-end, How will you navigate the
records? See, too many variables.
The communication part is by far the easiest. Almost
negligible, although the Flash Player security can cause some
head-scratching!
