Can force a partitioned drive to open in OS 9 w/out running Classic?

So there is no way to "insulate" a partitioned OS 9.04 from opening Classic? I had read that one of the reasons to partition is to be able to set up distinct OS environments in which to run apps otherwise not compatible with the dominant OS. Has the introduction of the OX X/Classic architecture eliminated this as an option?
(This is related to my associated post regarding running VPC 4.02 which won't run w/OSX.)
Thanks for any ideas.

dbahr: I'm not certain that I understand your question correctly, but I'll have a go at it.
If you have OS 9.x installed on each of two partitions or drives, and one of them is selected for use in providing the Classic environment under OS X, and OS X is running, then there is no way you can open an OS 9-native but Classic-incompatible application. If you try, it will invoke Classic, then discover that it's not compatible with Classic, and some sort of problem will ensue. The nature of the problem may vary with the program in question. This is what will happen regardless of what other version of OS 9 may be available, or where it or the application you want to run in it is located.
If OS X is running the computer, OS 9 can't be put in control of the computer "on the fly." To switch to full control by OS 9, you must reboot, choosing the desired OS 9 volume as the startup disk. If you do this, OS X will not be running, and OS X applications will not be usable, following the reboot.
So in the case of your old Classic-incompatible, OS 9-native version of VPC, it is simply impossible to have that and OS X running at the same time on the same computer. Does this answer your question?

How can detect that cdrom drive were opened and closed?

I'm sure there are more elegant and complicated ways to accomplish this using Windows SDK function calls to kernel32.dll or something extravagant like that, but if you want the bare-bones easy way to check if the CD-ROM tray is currently opened, then simply use System Exec to query the CD-ROM drive from the command line. One example of this is shown below.
Use the command line function cmd /c d:, where d: is your CD-ROM drive. If the Standard Error output from System Exec.vi is "The device is not ready." followed by a carraige return and line feed, then voila, your CD-ROM drive is open. If not, it's closed. Anyone have a better idea? I'm sure one exists...

  • ASM - can I use partitioned drives?

I want to set up ASM in a play pen at home, just to try it out. I don't want to go out and buy a stack of drives for a familiarization exercise. So can I use a single drive (or two) and partition it (them)?
(Yes, I know this pretty much defeats the purpose of ASM in a production type environment - but that's not what I'm talking about here. Just want to try it out, at home and not cost myself an arm and a leg - no production data, no mission critical this or that, just me messing around. No banks will fail if this blows up.)
I'll probably end up using a windows environment (XP or 2k) just so I'm close to my work environment.
    Thanks in advance!

Yep, you sure can. Just about any drive will work as mentioned above. But I'm partial to SanDisk and PNY. I've used both and they work great! Currently I carry both a 2GB SanDisk Micro Cruzer and a retractable 2GB SanDisk Cruzer, both really nice. Replaced my oldie but goodie 256MB PNY drive that I've been using since they first came out.

  • I can't get flash drive to open on my iMac

I poped a flash drive into a usb port on the back of my iMac 27 and nothing happened. I just put it on my windows pc and it opened right up. Wondering why it's not responding on iMac?

Did you format it for the Windows machine?  Does it show up in Disk Utility?  Is it a protected model?

If a windows system, use Windows Explorer to find the following file.
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 13\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
Try double clicking on it to run the editor directly rather than using the Welcome screen.

  • I can't restore my Nano or force to Disk Drive mode

    Help!
I have a 4 month old 2GB Nano that I cannot restore with IPOD updater nor can I force into Disk drive mode. It isn't recognized. Basically all the things I find on the help page. If I reset the IPOD (menu and select buttons) the nano will reset but it will not be recognized by Itunes or IPOD updater. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Make sure everything is up to date...
    iTunes
    iPod Updater
    Updating iPod's Software
Now restart your computer. Connect your iPod nano up. Does it work?
Also, does your iPod nano show "Do Not Disconnect" when connected to the computer?
If the iPod nano is still not recognized...
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes for Windows
Also, connect it up to the computer and open My Computer. Is the iPod there? If so...
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes

  • Is there a way to open a partitioned drive in "native" OS 9 w/out Classic

So there is no way to "insulate" a partitioned OS 9.04 drive from opening Classic when using a non-OS X app? I had read that one of the reasons to partition is to be able to set up distinct OS environments in which to run apps otherwise not compatible with the dominant OS. Has the introduction of the OX X/Classic architecture eliminated this as an option?

Tom, so are you saying that you are running both OS 10.3.3 and a "pure" (non-Classic) 9.2.2 at the same time?
I don't need/want to boot in 9.2.2, then shut down and reboot in OS X. I want to run the machine in OS X, but I want to have a little isolated corner running in a non-Classic (i.e., Non-OS X) environment so that my non-OS X compatible apps can run at the same time I opperate the rest of my "modern" programs. This is what you're doing?

  • I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity?

I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity? I purchased a faster drive initially, but has 200 GB capacity. I am running out of room and would like to upgrade for more space if possible.
    Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You don't need to partition your drive to run Fusion, only if you want to run Bootcamp.
If you have space on your Windows partition, I would suggest you backup your Windows partition, and then, delete the partition using Disk Utility.
You can now restore your virtual machine to a single volume or repartition if you prefer.
I would consider upgrading to a unibody MBP (used, refurbished will do) just to be able to access the HD. Opening the pre-unibody MBP is not something you would want to do.

Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

  • OS xSnow Leopard will not upload on my mac pro currently at 10.5.8. I get as far as the restart section of the download then the driver tray opens. Can you help?

Having problems upgrading my Mac Pro 10.5.8 to OS X Snow Leopard upgrade that I bought from Apple Online. I get as far as "Computer will restart and then continue with upload". The problem is that after the restart takes place my driver draw opens and the Updrade doesn't continue. I've tried serveral times without success. Not sure what the problem is. Please Help?

Confused. 10.6 is DVD based. Only Lion and above are downloads.
And best install is not to upgrade. Do a clean install  - on another drive.
Corrupt partition tables or bad sectors or no room to adjust the partitions or the directory is corrupt.
ERASE the drive if Repair Disk didn't work.

  • How can i force a mail link to open in the viewer and not in the Mail App?

    Hello to everybody!
I've a trouble about the mail links in a digital pubblication. I've to force a mail link to open inside the viewer.
A normal mail link causes the exit of the app and switch into the iPad Mail App... Is it possible force to open the mail link inside the folio with the DPS?
I've seen other digital pubblication made outside the DPS that can open the mail tab of the Mail App without exiting the starting App...
Thank you in advance for your help!

You can't with DPS, it will always launch the mail application registered with the operating system.

  • External hard drive isnt opening on iMac

Hi everyone, I was advised to post a different discussion instead of having two questions in one, (good tip thank you)
So here is my second questions.
My other problem is that i want to get all my photos onto the imac.  My hard drive wont open on my imac - (buffalo HD-PXT500U2/B)  it recognises its there but wont aloow me to actually open it to view any file. (Also mac compatible.)
I called apple support again to see if there was anything i can do, the only thing they suggested was that i have to reformat my hard drive (which would mean loosing all the info on there).  They suggested putting all my info on my PC, reformatting the EHD, then sucking up all the info again on my EHD, then giving it to my imac.  Apart from the fact that i dont think my PC could handle 500 GB of info on it at this stage - this would take days.  (currently to download 15GB of data takes an hour or so)
I asked about migration assistant or something similar which was at my start up (i didnt use it) which says it can transfer info from PC to mac - they said it wouldnt work, although i am still unsure as to why.
I have used google again to see what i can find as a fix, but its a mindfield out there and my brain is beginning to get fried - i have spent days trying to find out what fixes there are.  I cant even find migration assistant anymore on the imac ( i dont know where it lives)
Please please please help me as I am just about ready to throw in the towel - it shouldnt be this hard or this much of a headache should it?
I am trying to start up my own photographic business which is why I was advised to make the switch, but I am already 2 weeks behind on editing as I am constantly waiting on the delivery, fix, help to get my imac up and running properly.
I do need simple step by step instructions as I am new to mac.
    Thanks so much for reading

Reading between the lines, basically you have a drive that's Windows-formatted, that already has a lot of files on it, which you want to read with your Mac.
The usual drive format for Windows drives is NTFS, which in theory Macs can read, but not write to. An older format is FAT, which Macs can read and write to. Since you're not able to even read the drive, I'm a little puzzled.
When you attach the drive to the Mac, what happens? Do you see a drive icon appear on the desktop? If not, make sure that the Finder is set to display drives. Go to the Finder menu, click Preferences, General, and make sure external drives are set to show on the desktop.
If you still don't see it, open Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Do you see the drive there? If so, click on its partition/volume name (not the drive model line, there should be another line beneath it which displays the drive "name" that you've given it). The information at the bottom of the screen should tell you what format the volume is.
If it's NTFS, you could TRY installing Paragon NTFS. As I say, in theory with NTFS you certainly should be able to read the drive, but it might help. Worse case, you're out $20.
Failing that, does this hard drive have any kind of protection or encryption built into it? Some drives have proprietary encryption which relies on software that you install on your system. In that case, you would only be able to read it from your Windows system. If that's the case, maybe you can turn the encryption off on the WIndows side, then try again connecting to your Mac.
