Can G5 iMac hardware be upgraded to handle Snowleopard?

Can the G-5 iMac hardware be updated to handle OSX v.10.6?

To enlarge on Niels' answer, you need an intel processor, SnowLeopard will not work on PPC machines.

I was wondering can an iMac G4 be upgraded to an Intel processor? This stems from the whole PPC no longer being supported by Adobe Flash etc.

    No.

  • HT201257 I have an iMac (Mid 2007) upgraded to Lion OS. My fan runs all the time at high speed. I tried the SMT reset without results. I could not try the AHT test because it is not on my computer or install disk. Any suggestions what I can do to correct

I have an iMac (Mid 2007) upgraded to Lion OS. My fan runs at high speed all the time. I reset the SMT without results. I had no way to do the hardware test.
Can I fix this high fan speed?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
If the above doesn't help then create a new user account. Log into the new account. Does this fix the problem?

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee
    Cheers, Gerd

  • Can an iMac 10.6.7 snow leopard with wired MOUSE be upgraded to LION OX?

Hi can you help,  Can my iMac OS X 10.6.7 that uses a wired mouse be upgraded to Lion OX if so how could I zoom the screen with my fingers as I dont have a magic mouse or magic pad?  Also can my iMac work okay if I got rid of the mouse for the pad.  I bought the iMac just 2 mnths before the new ones came out pity but love it anyway as I have had 3 windows PCs and 2 laptops but nne of them are as good as the Apple iMac.

As long as your iMac meets the system requirements, you can buy Lion - having a wired mouse has nothing to do with the operating system; it just will not allow you to use any gestures. But I can't see why you just couldn't use it as you always have. And, as long as your iMac supports bluetooth, I'm sure you can buy a trackpad if you like - then you'd be able to use gestures.

  • How much hard drive RPM can this iMac handle?

    Hello!
In my office there's an *iMac Indigo G3 @ 400Mhz* (serial number RN03820ZJV8) and I need to replace its hard drive with a new one with more capacity.
Am being offered hard drives with different RPMs (5,400, 7,600, etc.) but I need to know how much can this IMac model handle, I don't want to over-heat it.
However, I couldn't find that specific data on apple's web site...
So as an alternative way of knowing this I thought that it would be a good idea to know the RPM of the current hard drive as it has worked well for several years:
    "*Fujitsu MPG3204AH E:*", capacity of 19.09GB (serial number: VL00T1A09W09).
But I haven't been able to find that info either!
Anyone out there who can answer:
1.- What's the maximum amount of RPM this specific iMac model can handle without overheating?
    And/or:
2.- What's the RPM for that specific hard drive?
    Best!
    Danny

Several years ago, there were concerns about the faster 7,200 RPM drives causing heat issues in the convection-cooled, slot-loading iMacs. In actuality, the hard drives manufactured today run more smoothly, cooler, and quieter than the first generation of 7,200 RPM drives. You won't have any problems installing a 7,200 RPM drive. The onboard IDE controller can only recognize a maximum formatted drive capacity of 128 GBs, so a 120 GB drive is ideal, but hard to find now. A 160 GB drive is usually the smallest drive stocked by many retailers today, but it would only be recognized as 128 GBs after formatting. As for the Fujitsu MPG3204AH-E drive, the "AH" in the model number indicates a 7,200 RPM drive, whereas earlier drives with "AT" in the model number were 5,400 RPM drives.

  • Can anyone help me with upgrading memory in my older iMac? I currently on have 1gb of memory so as you can imagine my machine is quite slow.

Can anyone help me with upgrading memory in my older iMac? I currently only have 1gb of memory so as you can imagine my machine is quite slow. I check in my system profiler and it shows I do have a memory slot open. It is using a DDR2 and I was told that the latest are DDR3 and I need to find out if I can run that on my model number. This info came from a tech guy at best buy.

That is what I needed.  You can upgrade to a maximum of 6gb of ram and need the following type:
200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  You can easily find it online, here is an example: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_PC2-6400

If they are the grey discs which came with the iMac, then they will be machine specific and will not work on the MBP anyway. You will need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard from the Apple Store for about $29 and upgrade from that. I presume your MBP is Intel and not G4.

How can I remove the iPhoto upgrade to my iMac OSX 10.2.8? Can the upgrade return my library?

With respect, we'll need rather more detail than that.
In general, you can only roll back an upgrade to a library with a back up. No back up, no roll back.

No, unless you break something or install the wrong RAM, new RAM is not covered by warranty/AppleCare of course.

I have a 7606, with redundant RSP (RSP720-3C-GE with sub-modules 7600-PFC3C , 7600-MSFC4) . 3C is currently only able to handle 256K routes. How can i upgrade to handle 1M routes? Plus the router is already having a 7600-ES20-2X10G with DC3 and a SIP-400. Please advice.

You need RSP720-3CXL in order to be able to support 1M routes. Also you need to make sure that any linecards with DFCs also have 3CXL or 3BXL DFCs otherwise the system will fall back to 3B / 3C mode which will limit the FIB TCAM size to 256K.
By the way as far as I know you cannot upgrade your RSP720-3C to 3CXL in the field.

  • Can my iMac handle Sony 4K footage through FCPX? I'm running with 3.1ghz i5 with 16GB of RAM

I am looking to purchase the new Sony FDR-AX1 as I get my videography business up and running and am wondering if my iMac will be able to handle editing the footage?

Was wondering even with best graphics card and thunderbolt raid, will iMAC support 4k monitor via thunderbolt , direct from iMAC or through a dock? If not is it because no HDMI port?

  • Can an iMac render?

I currently have a 4 year old iMac 27", only upgrade is the RAM (8GB). Last fall I started studying Digital Media (3D, VFX, Animation etc..) and I have had to study at home for a few months now. I don't do "insane" things yet, maybe compared to my fellow students I do but it's not that heavy yet. It will get a lot heavier thou. I use mainly Autodesk Maya, and I've had LOADS of problems when rendering. Even with the lowest settings! My iMac gets exptremely hot and if I render much more than once on low setting within an hour, especially after a few hours of work, the program just frezzez and I can't do anything so I have to "strangle" my com.
So, it's time to invest. Especially since I will be taking a year of just working on my portfolio in a few months time. I prefer working on a mac, I use PC's at college and I really just do not like them of several reasons. And they are at least as faulty as my old mac. So here is what I am considering:
    27-inch iMac
    Hardware
3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
    32GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4X8GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5
In other words an almost fully upgraded iMac. I've heard the NVIDA card is ok for 3D and the i7 will make it a lot smoother too, but I need to be certain this will do the job since it will be a pretty expensive investment for me. So, will this machine be able to render hig res pictures with final gather etc? I am gonna be doing the render in v-ray in the future to, can it handle that? And will it be able to render semi-heavy After Effects and NUKE projects without crashing? Is it worth buying for a beginner going into intermediate? Can it handle working in these programs for up to 16+ hours a day?
I don't have too many problems modeling, but the render is so incredibly vital to be able to make a proper portfolio. I hope you can help me make this decition, thanks

Even your old iMac should render. If it gets extremely hot, check that your environment in your room is within parameters of the specs:
    "Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
    Storage temperature: -13° to 113° F (-24° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 0% to 90% noncondensing
    Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet
    Maximum storage altitude: 15,000 feet
    Maximum shipping altitude: 35,000 feet"
And run the hardware test that comes with it.  If you are getting four language screens telling you to restart, or the machine shuts down on its own, and the hardware test detects nothing, it could be the RAM is bad.  And make sure the hard drive never gets over 85% full.
For fastest renderings, nothing beats a Mac Pro.

  • Can an iMac serve as a wireless access point server?

I have a current iMac with standard built in wireless capability but I'm on the net with wires (RJ45 twisted pair ethernet CAT5 cables). Can my iMac serve as a wireless access point for a new device in the house (Nintendo Wii)? Is there a setting I can turn on, or software that can be downloaded to have the iMac act as a server instead of just a client on a wireless network? I know that it's best to have dedicated hardware do this, but I'm looking for a software solution to use while I decide what to buy.
Currently I have a DSL connection and a star style home network. The DSL modem has an ethernet cable to a hub, and our 2 macs connect with wires to the hub. (I have an older DSL modem that has no wireless capability, I know that upgrading the DSL connection involves a new modem that includes wireless, but the phone company makes no guarantees about supporting Macs, so I have to do some research first.)
    -Ken

If your iMac connects to internet from ethernet cable, you can use airport to share the connection wirelessly by creating a network from airport, then go to system preference > sharing > internet and enable internet sharing. But if you already have a wireless router, Mac should be compatible, there is nothing inherently different between iMac's airport and PC's wireless card.
For Wii, I have no experience myself but there are plenty of posts on this forum, like this one: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4528652&#4528652
