Can Garage Band play an external MIDI synth?

Can Garage Band play an external MIDI keyboard?
I have an external MIDI keyboard/synth.
In Garage Band Preferences I’ve set Input Device and Output Device to my external MIDI keyboard.
I can play the external keyboard with Garage Band in Record mode and it records just fine.
However, when I select Garage Band to play, nothing plays on the external keyboard.
I can set the Output Device to Build-In Output and Garage Band plays the software synth on my computer just fine.
Can Garage Band play an external MIDI keyboard?
-Mike

Thanks lenoie
What I'm hoping for is for Garage Band to send MIDI out to the external keyboard.
Does anyone know if Garage Band can do this?
Thanks :-)

  • Can Garage Band (or other software) alter "style" of music?

This may be a crazy question, but can Garage Band (or other software someone can suggest) do to a piece of music what those electronic keyboards do: play it as if it was performed in different styles/instruments? For example, if I had the music for a basic folk song, is there software that can play it in in a heavy metal style, for example? Am I dreaming or can this be done in software somehow?
    Mike

When using, say, folk guitar audio loops, assign an Amp Simulator with British Crunch or some other Rock setting. I have also done this with the blues harmonica and it sounds pretty good. If you are using Midi, you can assign rock guitars to give a rock edge. This way you can play with some possibilities.
You can play around with changing Midi piano loops to say, guitar or visa-verse for some fun experimentation. But remember, a true "style" of music is very hard to obtain. It is totally a work of creative execution.

  • I do not see the user interface for the Logic software instruments. I can hear them play through my midi keyboard but I cannot see them to adjust parameters. Please advise.

Couple of things - you can open the interface for any instrument or plug-in by double-clicking its insert slot on the channel strip. You can configure Logic to automatically open the interface for a plug-in when you first instantiate it in the preferences. Go to Logic Pro > Preferences > Display > Mixer, and check the box for "Open plug-in window on insertion".

  • External midi synth not working

    Hi,
I want to get my nord wave (hardware synth) working in logic.
My main audio interface i use is the apogee duet, but since that doesn't have midi in/out ports, i am connecting the nord to midi in and out to my native instruments audio8 interface.
I have connected the nord going midi in (from nord) to midi out (on the audio8) and midi out (on the audio8) to midi in (on the nord). The nord is also connected to my mac pro with usb and is also powered by mains.
When i go to the audio midi setup on the mac, it doesn't see my nord at all.
I have gone into logics environemnt and tried all sorts of things to get it working but just cannot get the nord working.
I can use the nord as a midi keyboard to play soft synths in logic, but can't get it to play on an external midi track.
Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated.
    many thanks

That is twice Nord Midi in and twice Audio8 out. Are you sure?
From Nord to Audio8 would mean Nord MIDI Out to Audio8 Midi in, in my book...

well, it shouldn't. AMS only lists Interfaces automatically. You should create the Nord yourself and cable it virtually in AMS as you have cabled it physically.

To use Midi coming from Logic to the Nord you must load the AU instrument *External Instrument* in a Midi/Software Instrument track. Also see p. 237 and further of the LP8 User Manual.

  • Can garage band do live playback?

I was wondering if there is a setting somewhere and i'm just missing it but i want to have garage band playback something live.  For instance, hook a microphone up to my mac, than my mac up to a nicer system and hear it back as i play rather than recording THAN playing it back?

Select your audio track and make sure it is enabled for recording (the little record button directly below the track name needs to be red). Then open the Track Info panel.  Near the bottom right you will see the Monitor option.  Set this to ON and you will immediately be able to hear yourself sing or play into the mic without having to record anything.
Of course, you'll want to double check that you've correctly enabled your system for sound output.  Inside GB, go to Preferences --> Audio/MIDI --> Output and make sure the right choice is selected.
One final warning: if your mic gets too close to your speakers you will get nasty feedback.  You can prevent this by choosing Monitor ON with Feedback Protection (only available in GB '09 & '11), which will shut off the sound output if feedback gets too loud. Or you could avoid this problem entirely by using headphones.

  • Delays w garage band live with external USB mike

I'm using  an external USB mike into a Macbook pro with garage band running as recommended with monitor on. (Mac's earphone port  cabled to input of a Marley  "Get together") After  anywhere between 7-15 minutes a delay occurs. When initially investigating this set-up, I did notice someone dealing with such delays. Could someone please put me to rights? Bern

It will be a little clearer. Play around with the mic position to see if you can minimize the background sound. I believe the six "ticks" you heard were the count-in. You can turn that off via the Control menu.

  • Import midi  and play to external midi

When I import a mid(i) file, it creates all the tracks and plays back through the system output. What I would like to do is play it to my USB attached external midi device.
I can do this by moving individually each track to a newly created External Midi type track but was hoping for an easier/faster way.

  • Can garage band be used with usb turntable to transfer lp's to digital?

i have a number of lp's that i want to transfer to my mac, is garage band capable of doing that or do i need other software? input appreciated, thanks
    17 G4 Powerbook - macmini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You can do that with Garageband, but I wouldn't say it's the best software to do that. It will not split the cuts into the individual songs, and so unless you record one song at a time, each side of the LP will end up as one long cut. Then you will have to export each individual section to end up with songs. But if you already have GB and the USB turntable, you might just try it and see how it works. I have Peak and that works better for this type of thing.

  • How many outputs can garage band use?

I currently use Audacity for my recording/playback needs, but when linked to a 2i4 interface, I can still only select Right or Left for output options rather than Output:1, 2, 3 and 4.  Does Garage Band allow the user to select a line out from the available outputs, or is it also limited to L and R regardless of the number of outputs on my interface.  I need to be able to send out 4 different mixes at once (one for PA, drums, guitar and vocals).
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

.NET assemblies on which your specified assembly depends are loaded using the .NET framework's algorithm for finding assemblies, not the TestStand search directories. They are not directly loaded by TestStand; they are loaded by the .NET
framework. Generally the .NET framework will find dependent assemblies if they are in the same directory as your specified assembly, are in the application base directory (i.e. the directory of the executable), or in the GAC.
    Hope this helps,

  • Hey guys can garage band work w/ a recording interface

hey i just wondering if garage band will work w/ a recording interface
w/ out have to buy a differ software

By recording interface you mean a digital audio interface that does A/D D/A conversion then yes the Mac will work with just about every usb/firewire interface made.

  • Can garage band write sheet music

I'm recording on GarageBand via a firewire audio interface (the PreSonus studio mobile). I have two keyboards hooked up to it via the 1/4" analog inputs. Recording is going fine.
But, is there anyway for GarageBand to write out simple notation of the notes I've played on the keyboards? Nothing fancy, just some simple notation that I could reference should I completely forget a riff.
Is this something GarageBand has the capacity to do? If not, does Logic? Another program?
It would be a huge time-saver and helpful organizer.
    Thanks,
    Bleakley

    Hi HangTime,
I got all the midi hooked up. Its working great. Love being able to see the score notation from the midi track. Plus, I was able to record the 1/4" inputs at the same time. I'm a newbie at this and I'm pleased at how smooth stuff has been going so far.
One more question. Can I export the midi score from GarageBand so that I can use and edit it in a more appropriate sheet music program?
    Thanks!

  • Control external MIDI synth with Logic Pro X

I purchaced Logic Pro X to use it as a MIDI-sequencer for my external stagepiano: the Roland RD-700sx including two expansion boards (SRX-04 and SRX-10). I want to make records to create my own music. Before I record it as audio I want to record it as MIDI, because in that form it's easier to make adjustments.
The RD-700sx is GM-compatible, though the better quality sounds are stored in certain banks, which one can select bij entering a specific number to the MIDI control assignments MSB and LSB. For example: to select the Superior Grand Piano, MSB = 87, LSB = 64 and PC (program change) = 1. To select the 60's E. Piano 2, MSB = 87, LSB = 65 and PC = 5. To select the first tone wheel organ MSB = 112, LSB = 0 and PC = 1. To select the SX Rock Kit (drums) MSB = 86, LSB = 72 and PC = 2. And to select the staccato cello on my expansion board MSB = 93, LSB = 3 and PC = 79.
I spent a lot of time searching and asking on the internet how to select the desired sounds, but I don't know how to do it. So far I know you have to create a multitimbral MIDI environment and on each of the 16 channels you can assign a bank and enter the values of MSB and LSB. I found this article: Logic Pro/Express 9: Defining Custom Bank Messages - Apple Support
I understand a part of it, though I have too little experience with Logic Pro X to get the job done. Can someone please explain it to me from the beginning to the end? You would help me a lot!!!

did you do a firmware update  on 003 ?

  • Garage Band run from external drive

Can I run GB from an external drive? I have en external that I also use as a boot drive. I have plently of room for the application & scratch files but not on my internal drive.
    Thanks.

Maybe you should think about moving some data off the internal to dedicated backup drive and burn some DVD of the data just in case. It's always best to have some free space on a boot drive. Maybe even think about upgrading to a larger internal hard drive.

  • Can garage band handle 8 mike inputs at once with a breakout box?

We are wanting to do a rough live recording of our band onto seperate tracks in garageband so we can get the levels of each instument right in the final mix.
Can we simultaneously monitor 8 inputs and record 8 tracks at once?
Which is the best breakout box to use?
    Any ideas appreciated.

You might want to check out the broader selection on Sweetwater's site:
    http://www.sweetwater.com/c683--FireWireAudioInterfaces
I like the RME Fireface. If your budget can support it, it's very reliable.
In addition to Presonus, there are other good choices from Motu, Mackie, Metric Halo, etc. I'd just stay away from Digidesign hardware designed for protools.
