Can Google TV record tv shows to act as a DVR without Dish?

Hello!
I am pretty much a technological dummy, so please bear with me if this is a dumb question!
I read online that with Google TV you can program your tv shows to watch at a later date, in effect enabling Google TV to work as a DVR.
I have a 32" Insignia Flat screen tv purchased at Best Buy last year.
I spend a lot of time at my Mother In Law's home. She has Insight Digital TV, but the bedroom I stay in has the cable coming through the wall with no set top box. We will be using the digital boxes from Insight that are necessary on all sets since going all digital, but the box is not installed yet.
I desperately need to find a way to record programming at a later time, without needing a monthly subscription or additional fee on her cable bill. A cable card or digital reciever from the cable company is not an option. In addition, it is necessary that the recording or watching recorded content not interfere with what is being watched on her main tv.
Will Google TV do this for me? Or is there any other option that you can recommend?
I use a Dell Laptop with a dual core processor, but as mentioned before, I am sort of a computer dummy and have not been able to get anything like this to work on my computer. (I have tried TV guide DVR with no luck!)
I searched for a solution last year with no luck. I'm hoping with all the constant new technology, there will be something that will work for me. If not now, is there anything rumored to be coming out soon?

This is not a dumb question, it is a very good question. No Google TV will not do this at this time. It is also my understanding Google TV is on hold for some of the new models that are due to be released this spring, due to the fact that content is being blocked by Hollywood. The Google executives have not done a very good job schmoozing Hollywood. I too have been looking into this, this is what I have come up with, for the easiest least, expensive solution get a good old fashion VCR. The other options I have found are
  1) This one is the most complex but if done right gives you the most flexibility. Use a computer and windows media center - draw backs are as follows you will need a fairly decent computer with a good video card, a better than average processor, ample hard drive storage, a TV tuner card or a USB tuner card. The tech savvy (and compatible TV) to network your TV with the computer (the Intel I5 Processor has an add on you can buy to simplify this (it is wireless), however my experience with this is not great, seems to be buggy but has potential) or if your TV is close enough you can always hook it up as a second monitor (your TV will need a PC input for this or you will need a cable a HDMI cable, DVI etc depends on TV.). Sounds more difficult than it is, but running a computer all the time to record these programs will probably be more expensive in electricity than the $5.99 to pay for the DVR service. You may also have issues if you are getting a scrambled single from cable or satellite, a decent option if you watch broadcast TV.
  2) Get a computer (laptop or desktop) use your HD TV as a monitor and watch the online programming provided by the networks or the original HULU. Downside is that programming is limited to what they want to provide>
  3)Get a TV, Bluray player, computer, PS3 etc. and use a provider such as HULU Plus (HULU Plus has very limited programming as of now, the offer more on the computer only version) or Netflix (I like NetFlix no commercials, HULU Plus has commercials and you have to pay $7.99 monthly fee, note to HULU you will be canceled by me at months end. Netflix you pay for as well but without commercials).
  4)Move to Europe.
The reason for this difficulty is because big business has lobbied congress (surprise, surprise) to block our ability to use DVR's that are available in others countries that are able to act as simple VCRs. The extra $5.99 adds up for the cable / satellite companies.
I hope although doubt this helped very much, there are probably other options as well I just have not found them.
After re-reading your post a second time, I think the reason you are not having any luck with your computer and the TV Guide service (I am not familiar with that service) is because you will need a TV tuner for your TV (this is also listed above). You can get these almost any where that just plugs into a USB port connect any unscrambled signal (antenna), install software or use media center and you should be good to go.

step by step creation of Maintenance view:
With the help of the table maintenance generator, you are able to maintain the ENTRIES of the table in SM30 transaction.
It can be set in transaction SE11 - Tools - Table maintenance generator.
Table maintanance Generator is used to manually input values using transaction sm30
follow below steps
1) go to se11 check table maintanance check box under attributes tab
2) utilities-table maintanance Generator-> create function group and assign it under
function group input box. Also assign authorization group default &NC& .
3) select standard recording routine radio in table table mainitainence generator to move table
contents to quality and production by assigning it to request.
4) select maintaience type as single step.

SM30 is used for table maintenance(addition or deletion of records),
For all the tables in SE11 for which Table maintenance is selected , they can be maintained in SM30
Sm30 is used to maintain the table ,i.e to delete ,insert or modify the field values and all..
It creates the maintenance screen for u for the aprticular table as the maintenance is not allowed for the table..
In the SE11 delivery and maintenance tab, keep the maintenance allowed..
Then come to the SM30 and then enter the table name and press maintain..,
Give the authorization group if necessary and give the function group and then select maintenance type as one step and give the screen numbers as system specified..

Then u will able to see the maintenance view for the table in which u can able to insert and delete the table values...
We use SM30 transaction for entering values into any DB table.
First we create a table in SE11 and create the table maintenance generator for that Table using (utilities-> table maintenance generator) and create it.
Then it will create a View.
After that from SM30, enter the table name and Maintain, create new entries, change the existing entries for that table.

It used to be ok. I had a firexox teeshirt from way far back, firefox 1.0. Then i had a hemorrhagic stroke, about 3 years ago. Now i'm back, in a new place, for two months now.
(I use my left hand now...) and once again, i have a desktop, with win-xp (and five internal harddrives, and a 600w ps.) Anyway, for the first time with my new desktop, there is a cursor in the bottom of firefox, and it doesn't show everything, left to right unless i move it.
I've been out of commission, with only a laptop, with win-7-64bit edition, that i got just 7 months before my stroke. My sister threw away all of my desktops...many of which i built. The doctor said i may die...so my sister didn't even wait, but threw away my CLOTHES AND BOOKS AND COMPUTERS (except for the laptop), but she saved most of my harddrives...i guess i taught her how to save harddrives.
Anyway, it's been three years, since i've had no 32bit computer with win-xp, and i can't figure out how to make things go back to the way i'm used to. HELP! I was in your forums, when my e-mail was [email protected], which it will be again , soon. But for how, how do i get firefox to show all, left to right, without a bottom cursor? i know it's possible. Firefox 22 has a new way of setting the default zoom level: it is based on your Windows font size setting. So, if you set Windows fonts to 125% (enlarged 25%), your Firefox pages also will be enlarged 25%. On pages that do not adjust their layout, you may get a horizontal scroll bar.

Depends on what codec the video files are. You SHOULD be able to use quicktime. But I have found Quicktime to not be able to play all codecs.

Unless you have a very unusual TV it is not sending out anything that your MacBook can take in. What you want is to get the TV signal at its source, such as your cable TV box and send that to your MacBook. You would need something like ElGato's EyeTV HD for this.

DVR sometimes won't change channels automatically to record a show

Last night I turned on my TV and a FIOS message was there indicating a user action was required. I needed to select 'record both shows' in order for the DVR to change channels on the second tuner to record an hour long show that was already 35 minutes in. The DVR should have recorded the two shows in the schedule without intervention.

Does anyone know why this happened or is there a setting that needs to now be set?

This is how Verizon set up their system. It is absolutely asinine. As is the fact Verizon uses show titles to record as opposed to time like Cox cable. The result is you lose the last couple of minutes on ABC when they run their 9:02 to 10:02 schedule And in many cases I cannot record with an extended time because I already have 2 channels scheduled. On the other hand, Cox cable uses time.
My other issue is, and I am wondering if it is just my service, now that Verizon has gone to this new guide, it takes my set top box over 45 seconds to switch functions. Most of the time things don't delete, some shows take 2 recordings even though it was automatically recording, and more times than not, I lose the last few seconds of the recordings. And I am also getting numerous times where I lose either audio or the picture freezes.
Hopefully someone at Verizon reads these comments else we are just complaining to each other.

Comcast customers can record 4 shows at once while watching another on X1 with a single box.
Cox customers can record 6 shows at once on Contour with a single box.
TiVo customers can record 4 or 6 shows at once on Roamio with a single box.
But us FiOS customers can only record 2 shows at once, while watching something we've pre-recorded, with a single box.
Are there any plans to actually be competitive with these other providers in regards to recording ability?

If you have tried repeatably and unsuccessfully to rip the VOBs from the DVD-VIDEO on a DVD-R or +RW using the Premiere Elements 7 (Get Media/"DVD (Camcorder or PC DVD Drive), I would strongly suggest that you use MPEG Streamclip to convert to DV AVI. Then bring the DV AVI version into Premiere Elements 7 via Get Media/Files & Folders from the save hard drive location of the DV AVI version.
MPEG Streamclip should take care of quality as well as any audio out of sync issues.

You have two set up choices
Free...MPEG Streamclip + QuickTime Alternative (which contains the required MPEG-2 Playback Component), BUT you need to uninstall your regular QuickTime to get this to work.

If you are going to being doing this type of a project on a regular basis, it might be worth the investment of going the partially free route.
Are you in a NTSC or PAL area? If you need a step by step for the MPEG Streamclip route, it will be supplied on request. I use it routinely. It is quick and effective.

Check whether do you have defined the industry sector in R/3. This has to be done before filling the setup table. search the forums with note no 353042.
This is done with the help of Transaction MCB_ which you can find in the OLTP IMG for BW (Transaction SBIW) in your attached R/3 source system.
Here you can choose your industry sector. 'Standard' and 'Consumer products' are for R/3 standard customers, whereas 'Retail' is intended for customers with R/3 Retail only.
You can display the characteristics of the process key (R/3 field BWVORG, BW field 0PROCESSKEY) by using Transaction MCB0.
If you have already set up historical data (for example for testing purposes) by using the setup transactions (Statistical Setup Programs) (for example: Purchasing: Tx OLI3BW, material movements: OLI1BW) into the provided setup tables (for example: MC02M_0SCLSETUP, MC03BF0SETUP), you unfortunately have to delete this data (Tx LBWG). After you have chosen the industry sector by using MCB_, perform the setup again, so that the system fills a valid transaction key for each data record generated. Then load this data into your connected BW by using 'Full update' or 'Initialization of the delta process'. Check, whether the system updates data into the involved InfoCubes now.
If all this is not successful, please see Note 315880, and set the application indicator 'BW' to active using Transaction 'BF11'.

Records Not Showing Up On Report

I'm using Crystal XI
I can take the query from "Show SQL Query..." and paste it into a query screen in SQL Server 2008 management studio and retrieve the correct records. However, the report itself does not contain all the records the should have been returned.
To the best that I can figure, the records where a transaction date (date/time field) is null is not showing up on the report. I only display the field, do not do any calculations based on the field.
It is part of the record selection formula, where I test for the field to be between start/end parameters or is null (which produces the correct SQL query as I stated above)
So why are the records not showing up on the report, and more importantly, how do I get them to show up?

On the other hand, just on a whim, I tried reversing the order of the query from what it was:

    And
    {MyQuery.Transaction_Date} In {?Start/End Date}
    Or
    IsNull({MyQuery.Transaction_Date})
To:
{MyQuery.Company = {?Company}
    And
    IsNull({MyQuery.Transaction_Date})

    {MyQuery.Transaction_Date} In {?Start/End Date}
And that seemed to work. I'm not sure why it will work in the Mangement Studio, but not in Crystal Reports, but at least it works.

Why isn't there an option to record future shows using the HD box linked to a Multi room DVR setup?

I have a multi room DVR in my livingroom and HD boxes in my 2 bedrooms. Currently if you are viewing a program on one of the HD boxes you are able to record the live program you are viewing as the HD box will enable your DVR to record that show.
Why hasn't FIOS enabled the settop boxes that are part of a multi room DVR setup to be able to record future shows? Needless to say, if I am lying in bed at night and see something in the program guide airing at a future date I really don't want to get out of bed and walk to the living room, turn on the TV and DVR and then program that new recording.
If I have missed something and you can do this please let me know. Otherwise FIOS should add this to their customer's wish list and enable recording for future times on the HD boxes that are part of your multi room DVR system!

You can already do that. Highlight the show in the guide and press the record button. You should get a pop up with the option to Set Reminder or Record on your DVR. If it doesn't check your DVR to ensure that availability is extended to the STB you are using.

How can I copy a TV show from HM DVR to my computer?

Is there any way to get a show off and watch it on my computer. I used to be able to do it with my TIVO and there are many different outputs on the HMDVR (USB, ESATA, Firewire, etc).
I thought maybe Media Manager would allow me to transfer video files to my computer but it doesn't.

With the Motorola DVR offered by FiOS, you can use a PC to record content from local channels via Firewire, as it is played. Instructions for that can be found this AVS thread. Note this only works for the local (including locals in HD) and public interest channels on FiOS; this does not work for any FiOS cable channels.
If you want to copy a recording from a cable channel using the Motorola DVR, you'll have to do it the old fashioned way -- connect the composite outputs from the DVR to your DVD recorder (or computer), press play on the DVR, and then press record on the DVD recorder (computer).
The TivoHD is still the only standalone DVR that lets you download SD and HD recordings to your computer over your home network, as seen in the screenshot below.
Direct recording downloads over your home network using a standard web browser. Use 'tivo' as the login and your TiVo's media access key as the password.

With Windows Media Center, I was able to hook my cable up directly to my computer and record tv shows for later viewing. Am I able to do the same with Apple TV? Or does it only allow me to purchase tv shows?

The ATV should play any mpeg4 content iTunes can load. it appears that the TubeStick can record a Mac and export in an ATV friendly format for later syncing.
I don't think it is possible to record directly to the ATV.
