Can I access files on hard disk outside of OS ?

I installed a program which seems to have screwed up my computer. Now my computer wont boot into leopard (hangs on a blue screen). I know the exact files which are causing the problem and would like to delete them... is there a way i can access the files on my HD and delete the offending files aside from target disk mode ? - don't have a firewire cable.
many thanks!
nick

Possibly, although it depends upon when in the startup process these files are interfering.
You could try safe mode. This mode normally inhibits startup of preference panes and contextual menu items as well as some login items.
If that doesn't work you can try single-user mode. This boots the computer into the command line mode where you can delete files using the Unix commands. However, you will need to know the actual path to the installed file(s) in order to remove them. The Unix command for changing directory is 'cd' (no quotes) and the delete command is 'rm'. Take care with its use as it's not user friendly and can delete anything on the drive without warning so be sure you enter file names correctly. If a filename has spaces or other special characters then you need to enclose the file name in single or double quotes, e.g., 'This Filename Has Spaces'. To find out the syntax for a Unix command enter the command: man commandname.
To restart the computer from single-user mode enter: reboot then press RETURN.

  • Can't copy files to hard disk

I have been having trouble copying/moving files to an external hard drive from my Macbook Air 3,2. I have moved and copied files from the MacBook Air many times to the external hard disk but this time I am having a lot of trouble.
I tried to move 2 movie files but it was taking an incredibly long time. So I clicked the "x" to cancel the transfer. However, it didn't stop it straightaway. The transfer just remained in limbo. Then I got a message saying something about how I didn't disconnect the hard disk properly and the hard disk just seemed to have disconnected itself from my computer even though I didn't eject it.
Then it caused problems for my MacBook Air. When I went to check on the disk in Utilities, it told me I had to use the installation disk to start it up. Other strange things happened like my desktop picture just disappeared and suddenly I had an extra 10GB on my hard drive.
I repaired the disk successfully using the installation thumb USB drive.
(I also repaired the external hard disk).
But I am having the same problem again when I try to move files onto the hard disk. It doesn't seem to work, as it's incredibly slow and when I cancel it, it says I ejected the hard disk wrongly. And the drive does not appear in the Finder Window.
I don't know why this is happening to me. I repaired the MacBook Air HD and I also repaired the external disk and I can't copy movie files onto the hard disk. I have enough space and both disks are Mac Ext Journal formatted. I copied lots of movies the other day (about three days ago and last night) onto the hard disk without any problems.
I really need to move the movies from my computer as I will runn out of disk space on the computer soon (I have about 12 GB left right now).
I tried copying a jpg picture as a test, and it copied it OK but it took a long time. Much longer than normal.
I got an error message just now:
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Elechxxxxxxxxxx.mp4” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)
I never got this sort of error message before but now I am getting this message today several times when I try and copy the movies. I don't think it's the files themselves because I copied the same sort of movie files last night without any problem.
And as I said, the jpg file took a really long time to copy, like 2 minutes even though it's only a very small file.

This is not about saving the data on the external drive but I found this information to be helpful in case people have problems ejecting a drive:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1322931
    I threw the following:
    sudo umount -vf /dev/disk1s1
and the drive umounted. -v is verbose, just in case there were any errors thrown I wanted to know, and -f is force umount, which forces the drive to unmount. Check 'man umount' from terminal to see more info on these.
After doing this a couple times (I was doing some testing with some other things to find a faster solution than having to open terminal and umount) it just started umounting correctly. I have no idea why, but it did. So just keep that command in mind, just in case.
    Gryyphyn, out.
This may prevent the drive from being damaged by incorrect ejection. Because I could not eject the drive using force eject, restarting the computer etc, I unplugged the drive, which damaged the hardware of the drive.
If I had known about the command window method, I might have  been able to avoid all these problems now that I have with a damaged drive and trying to rescue the data on that drive.
That being said, I think Apple should try and resolve this problem they have with users not being able to eject drives. It seems to be a VERY common problem, and has nothing to do with users' negligence but to do with a systemic fault of Apple's.

Can I access files copied to this machine in target disk mode from this machine?

    HI Claire,
YOu didn't indicate which Mac OS you are using so I'm going to assume 10.4.x.
Connect the FireWire cable to the target computer after starting it up in FireWire Target Disk Mode.
*If the cable was already connected, unplugging it from either computer and plugging it back in should allow the target computer's hard disk to appear on the host.*
Also, make sure you have the most recent Firmware for your iBook... go here:

  • Can you access files on OSX system from OS9 system on the same iMac?

The apple software updater was updating my OSX4.6 to 4.8 but there was not enough disk space so when the window that told me that appeared I just clicked on shutdown. When I try to start my iMac again all I get is the Apple Logo screen with the animated wheel. So I am assuming that the OSX updating screwed up my OSX's ability to boot. Ok - so I thought I would reinstall my original Tiger software but I do not have enough hard disk space to do that. So I booted to OS9 which is still on my iMac and removed what files that I could, but still not enough free space. From OS9 I do not see any of the files that I have on the OSX desktop so that I can delete some of them. Is there some way for me to access the OSX hard disk or desktop files from OS9?
    Bruce

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Any files on your OS X desktop are OK to delete, but not the desktop folder itself. That desktop folder is found in your Users -> yourname folder.
    See my FAQ On http://www.macmaps.com/safetodeleteormove.html
to understand how Mac OS X is structured, so you don't delete something by accident.
Free up at least 15% of the hard disk before attempting to boot back into Mac OS X. This amount is arbitrary, but has been found to be the best amount of space to use Mac OS X in.

  • Copy a file from hard disk to a jar

Is there any way to copy a file from hard disk to a jar file?

    hajani wrote:
No, I want to copy a file into an other jar file (like a zip or a rar file)
Edited by: hajani on Dec 7, 2008 4:11 AMIf you really do mean 'jar' file an not 'zip' or 'rar' then you can use class java.util.jar.JarFile and write your own code. If you don't feel like writing a load of code then and you can guarantee that the 'jar' executable is going to be available then you could use Runtime.exec() or it's cousin ProcessBuilder. If you mean a 'zip' file then you could use class java.util.zip.ZipFile and write a load of code. If you mean a 'rar' file then you will either have to find a 'rar' class library or again use Runtime.exec().

  • Satellite A200-137 - Can not install windows after hard disk crash

last week my a200-137 crashed and now i have new hitachi 500 gb hdd on it, same as before the crash.
I install with Toshiba recovery DVD windows Vista on it and after succesfull install i have to start windows, it says preparing windows for first use then i have to wait a moment and then i get the message that windows installation is not completed. But it is complete!
After trying for 3 times installing with recovert I tried to install windows xp.
After a couple of minutes and transering files, I get the message no disk found! It says that there is no hard disk on the laptop!
But when I start up the boot menu or the setup menu I can see the 500 gb Hitachi hard disk!
So why can windows not find the hard disk and why can I not start windowds visat after installing with the recovery dvd?

    > So why can windows not find the hard disk and why can I not start windowds visat after installing with the recovery dvd?
On this virtual way it is not easy to say why you cannot install recovery image. It would be interesting to know if the same will happen when you replace HDD with the same or identical one.
Which capacity has had original HDD?
If possible try to obtain original Microsoft installation disc and check if HDD will be recognized by Vista or Win7 and of course if you will be able to install and start preinstalled OS.
About WXP installation: it is well known that WXP installation will not starts properly due to missing SATA driver that must be loaded before WXP installation starts.
Check this forum and you will find hundreds of threads with detailed explanation why this happen and what can you do about it.

It's important to define deleted and recovery. You can recover file from the recycle bin using the Win API. Here's an

Can I connect an external hard disk to time capsule? I tried but it doesn't show up. What would be the reason??

The USB drive must be formatted for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or if you want to use both Mac and Windows files, the drive can be formatted in FAT32.
A number of drives are formatted for Windows only in a format called NTFS. This willl not work on the Time Capsule.
In addition, the USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered. You almost always have to use a powered USB hub when you connect a drive to the Time Capsule...even if the drive has its own power supply.

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

  • Old Time Machine Hard Drive - Can't access files?

    Hi
I have just put an external hard drive I have not used for a approx a year into a spare bay in my Mac Pro.  It has HD video on it, but was surprised when I rebooted my machine to see it is a Time Machine drive (green and white desktop TM hard drive icon).  There is just under 400GB free space of the total 1TB drive, but can only access approx 260GB of that free space.
So, I am wondering if the remainder of the drive - approx 140GB is an old Time Machine backup from either Lion or Snow Leopard.
Time Machine can not see the files nor can I access them via Finder.  I only have Mountain Lion on my machine at present, but could partition my Boot SSD drive to add Lion or Snow Leopard on to it.
Is there any reason why I can't access these TM files if they do existing, or could there be other reasons why this is happening.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

Sorry, I think it's the way I replied to your last question.
TM remains switched off from doing last clean install and have not used it this time.  I now use an SSD for my boot drive and all my important files I use as and when needed are stored on other hard drives.
TM at the moment is swtiched off, but with the paddlock open it is asking me to Select Backup Disk - is this what you meant in your last post?  Just wanted to clarify - thanks

  • Utility that can search files on hard disk

I want to implement a utility in my application that can search files on the hard disk just like "find files and folsers" option in start menu of windows. What algorithm/techniques and java classes I should use.

What algorithm/techniques and java classes I should use.
You'll need to use recursion and the JDK 1.4.x regular expression package, java.util.regex, for pattern matching. A Java Developer's Journal article located at http://www.sys-con.com/java/article.cfm?id=854 details an implementation of a Java file search utility. Be aware that the article was written three years ago and uses a thrid-party regular expression package but it can certainly guide you in the right direction.

  • HELP! My hard drive is corrupt, can't boot can't access files!

My Intel Mac won't boot. I took it to Genius Bar and they tried to get it to go into target disk mode with firewire but that doesn't work either as it doesn't see the disk. The guy at the Genius Bar told me to get DiskWarrior and that it would fix my corrupt disk. I didn't have the money to get it so I took my Mac home.
I get home and read online that DiskWarrior doesn't work on Intel Macs. He was trying to get me to buy something that doesn't work!
Now I'm stuck. Won't boot, can't get files off of it which I need for work for Monday.
What can I do to fix my Intel Mac and fast? Thanks for any help you can offer. I don't know what to do!

Will the Mac boot with the Install DVD? If so what happens when you Repair the HD with Disk Utility in the Utilities menu?
