Can I access my external harddrive if I connect it to my Airport via USB?
I have a basic router providing a wireless network and access to the internet (given by my internet provider). And then I recently bought an Airport adaptor and connected my stereo, and now I'm playing music wirelessly.
My question is then, will I be able to access my external harddrive if I connect it to my Airport via USB?
It's an Airport Express Base Station (the one with only jack, usb and ethernet)
Thanks
Sorry but the USB port on the AirPort Express (AX) does not support USB hard drives.

I can't Access my External Harddrive.. Please Help
OS = Vista on a PC
I have a WD External Harddrive, that I Can't access. It is a plug in Harddrive (self Powered)
If i open "Airport Utility" on the left side it will show the unit. I double click on it. It brings up a secondary window that allows me to select
Airport
Internet
Printers
Disks
Advanced
I select Disks, and it shows the harddrive in the list. However....
I can't click on the harddrive to access it
Unless I'm doing it wrong (very possible) I can't map a network drive to it.
It's not showing up under the network tab
It's not showing up under "My Computer"
Please help I have called Apple Support and they can't figure this out. Infact they are sending me a new Unit for no reason. It may be possible that this particular My Book model is not compatible with the AirPorts as an AirPort Disk. (ref: The iFelix unofficial 802.11n Airport Extreme Hard Drive Compatibility List) Have you contacted WD support to see if they have a newer driver or specifically call out that they are compatible? I did a quick Google-search on the terms: "AirPort My Book" and found dozens of references where folks were having hit/miss success with the My Books.

Accessing an external harddrive through Airport Extreme
Hello,
I have read that one should be able to access an external harddrive that is connected to a airport extreme from any computer that has the internet.
Is this true?
How does one find the Internet address?
Regards,
JonAnybody got any ideas?
Cheers,

Can you access an external HD plugged into the Airport Extreme from a remote location over the internet?
Also can the content on the exteral HD plugged into the airport be accessed by the TV to stream content? The first question answer is yes..
The question is asked continually.. please read the methods that Tesserax wrote up so well.
See remote access tip here.
AirPort
Also can the content on the exteral HD plugged into the airport be accessed by the TV to stream content?
Unlikely .. because your TV uses a system called DLNA.. and Apple do not support DLNA in any way shape or form.. because they are fully committed to iTunes.. Apple routers have no media extensions.. unlike most other decent brands now which mostly do support multimedia.
Having said that.. you can place your video files on the external hard disk.. and play them.. but you need a player.. a real player not an apple TV which is a streamer.. eg A WD Live TV can play video files.. because it is a media player.. unlike your TV or apple TV. -

How can I share external devices connected to my Mac mini via USB on a wired network.
Own a Mac mini with Mountain Lion. Purchased the server app. The Mac mini is connected to a wired network with Mac’s and Windows machines. I have an external hard drive and 2 printers connected to the MAC mini via USB. I would like to share these devices with other computers on the wired network. Although I have attached similar devices with an airport extreme in the past, I am unable to use a wireless router in this case. Any suggestions on making this work with my current setup?
You don't really even need server app to do this. Simply go to System Preferences | Sharing and turn on both File & Printer sharing. Then, for example, the printer (not relevant what connection it has but obviously USB is fine) will be available to everyone on the wired network.
That's all there is to it - unless I missed/misunderstood something re: your setup which seems very straightforward. -
I am using iMac OS 10.7.2 with Garageband'11 6.0.4. I can't record sound from mixer Behringer X1622USB using USB out. when I connect the mixer to iMac via USB appears USB Audio CODEC on Sound and Preferences but I can't get no sound from mixer to iMac only sound from iMac to mixer. I only can record sound using microphone line in. Please help.
Eric,
Thanks for your reply. Realtek audio works only in playback. There is a stereo mix in the mixer but the recording controls are not operable with no sliders in the mixer for any recording option. Slider controls appear to be grayed out. Can't figure out how to enable them. Downloaded newest drivers to no avail.
The M Audio control panel has no apparent option for recording stereo mix. Adobe ignores the sound from the DVD or CD and shows flatline.
I'm trying to record the sound from the DVD not rip the track.
When I go to Audio Driver Setup and select Audition 3.0 windows sound, there is no input device installed.
I'm thinking of going back to a decent internal Soundblaster card like I have on my 8 year old machine I am replacing. -
How can i connect my Simmons Electric Drums via USB

You are not allowed to record using MIDI with STP ... You can do with Logic
However you could record your audio (using an audio interface) coming from your Simmons in STP

Problem accessing Seagate External Harddrive from iMac and Mac Book Air
I have a brand new Seagate 2TB external harddrive which I have just used to backup my entire iMac files (photos, videos, etc) via the Time Capsule programme. However I now can't access the files which apparently have been copied onto the Segate. I have now connected the Seagate to my Mac Book Air and it is not even being recognised as an external storage device.
Is someone able to tell me how I can access the files on the external drive?do you mean "time machine" as opposed to "time capsule" the latter is a back up drive in itself.
before you did your backup was your seagate drive formatted or did you just connect and instruct the mac to back up to the drive.
if the drive was not formatted then you will need to format the drive using disc utility. -
Can't access old external drives
I have past external Hard drives that I can no longer get to show up. I have upgraded my operating system since I used them. Would this be why I cant access them? If so is there a way I can access them. Please? and thank you!
The previous version of OSX was Lepord. I upgraged to Snow Lepord. Yes, I have shut all done, attached detached and changed cables. My computer will not recongnize the external hard drive as being attached. It is on and working but will not show up on the desk top or in finder or in disk utility. Not sure what SMC reset is so probaly haven't done that. Can not do disk repair as it doesn't show up for me to select an operation for.
Thanks Tom I will have a look at the link provided.
I am a photographer and have stored many images on these external harddrives and never thought of them when I upgraded the operating system. -
Can't Access My External Drive
My external drive was setup to allow access under my account name. I will be getting a new mac soon. I wanted to be able to use the external drive on the new mac. I accessed the external drive and set the permission to "system" to allow universal access. Somehow I managed to mess up permissions or something and I can no longer get access to the drive. I can see the drive using the disk utility but repairing the drive is grayed out. Not sure what to do? Help.
Hi Dansyacht, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Open Terminal & paste this in, spaces are important...
chmod 777 /Volumes/
then right after the last /, carefully type the name of that external volume, & if it has spaces in it enclose the name in quote marks. -
Can't access server externally. Can internally.
So I've searched almost every discussion on this site and on google and still can't get this to work.
I'm trying to set up profile manager. The problem is that I cannot acces the default website, the mydevice, or the profile manager site externally. It all works fine if I use a local name internal to network, but not when using the FQDN from external.
Before, everyone immediately chimes in an says it's a routing and port forwarding issue, I've tried all that.
OS - Mavericks
server hostname = FQDN that I use on internet (server.hostname.com)
certificate = self-signed and matches teh FQDN
DNS is hosted by server and works b/c other clients can resolve address to the internet
All ports are opened on the router, 80, 443, 1640, 2195-2196, 5223 and forwarded to the server
Server has a static IP address
When I use can u see me, it shows as port 80 and 443 as Connection timeout. However, I know port 80 forwards, b/c when i put an IP camera on the network adn configure access from port on the external network to the cameras port, it works fine when accessing the camera remotely. So not sure why it shows as connection timeout. And yes, I've disabled the port 80 route to my camera before forwarding to server. there is no duplicate entry.
Router = Motorola WRT54G
I can access the profile manager when i type in the local address on the LAN, but as soon as i login, the server redirects to the external FQDN and doesn't resolve.
ANyone help as to why I can't get access from external network to server.
thanksI turns out that another post mentioning VMware was the clue that helped me find the answer. I force quit all the processes that begin with vmnet, and I was able to connect without any problems. So the VMware virtual network interfaces are indeed the problem. Now, if you need to use these, then you're out of luck; I only use VMware occasionally, but I now wonder if those interfaces aren't causing some other odd problems I've been having.

Can't access my external hard drive on my new iMac
Hello All,
I just purchased a brand new iMac and am unable to access my Iomaga external hard drive. It's plugged in thru a usb port and the only way it pops up is if I unplug it from the outlet and plug it back in. When it shows up in the device list and I click on it to try and access my info, the computer gets hung up for a few minutes and then says the the drive was improperly ejected. The computer is running Mac OSX 10.7.2. I have a bunch of info on this drive that I need immediate access to. Thanks in advance for any help.
Alex-It sounds like the hard drive is on its last leg. I would try my best to backup the data on the disk. Then find a replacement for it.
