Can I add a NAS via ethernet to the Time Capsule network?

"I'm a PC," but am sick of spending all my time with Windows/Network conflicts and am getting ready to take the plunge into the Mac world (insert applause here).
My router/switch is old, and I want "n" wireless capability, so my plan here is to go whole hog and buy a Macbook Pro, an iMac, and a brand new network infrastructure including the 2TB Time Capsule. This way I will stay completely within the Apple family.
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS 2TB that I would like to have available as a second back-up drive on the network. It can only be on the network via ethernet (LAN). It cannot be plugged into the Time Capsule's USB port.
Will I be able to add this drive and get Time Capsule (and even Time Machine) to "play nice" with it? Can I even set the Time Machine on each computer to back up to this drive?
Or should I just sell the ReadyNAS and get a USB drive that will work with the time capsule?
Finally, there are only 3 ethernet ports on the TC. Can I add a switch?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer,
Shawn

It's reasonable to expect your NAS drive to work when connected to your Time Capsule network. However, it will be difficult for you to use it for Time Machine backups. Apple only supports Time Machine network backups to the disk in a Time Capsule.
It's easy to have multiple computers backing up via Time Machine to the same Time Capsule.
Or should I just sell the ReadyNAS and get a USB drive that will work with the time capsule?
That's up to you. Keep in mind that Apple still doesn't want you to use that USB drive for Time Machine backups.

Yes.

  • Can I add a USB hard drive to the time capsule

I am wanting to know if one could add an external HD to the USB port on the time capsule?

You might be able to. If you want to transfer the contents of one to the other, you will have to do that via your computer. But, if you wanted to increase memory space, then maybe. Try looking it up in the Time Capsule Manual.
P.S. It does say you can connect USB drives to it.

  • HT4356 Can I use a 'pc' network printer connected via ethernet to the home wifi network ?

Can I use a 'pc' network printer connected via ethernet to the home wifi network ?
or must the printer I want to use also have a wifi connection ?
I have a home network using ethernet connected devices to a router, also attached to th erouter is a WiFi unit. We are using the WiFi unit to connect to the network and hence to the big wide WWW.  We now want to print from our IPads pereferable to our netowk connected HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909a series. (not the wireless model).
I was using the HP ePrint app to print from the Ipad, but I do not fully understand how this works. It seems that you must use the app to do the printing which is fine for basic email and photos, but I can not access the drawing package I have, and want to print from it. Please what is it that I do not understand.

You must use an airprint printer directly connected to wifi through it's own wifi card.

  • Can I add an additional hard drive to my time capsule?

Can I add an aditional hard drive to my time capsule if the time capsule is near capacity?
If the Time Capsule is near capacity, will it stop backing up?

Can I add an aditional hard drive to my time capsule if the time capsule is near capacity?
    Yes
If the Time Capsule is near capacity, will it stop backing up?
No, Time Machine will automatically start to delete the oldest backups to make room for new backups.

  • I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • HT1178 can I add a external hard drive to my time capsule

I have a time capsule. and I want to add a external hard drive. how can I do that?

Buy any USB external drive and plug it in. However, it will not be usable as additional storage for the Time Capsule. It can only be used as a separate drive you can use for storage or as a separate backup drive if you switch to it in Time Machine.

  • Time Capsule--can I back up Two different Laptops on the Time Capsule?

It's just about that easy. I just got the Time Capsule. I backed up my MacBook Pro. Now I'd like to use the same Time Capsule to back up my wife's MacBook. Can this be done? If so, how? I keep getting the failed message from the Time Machine Backup.
    Thanks for the help.
    Dave

No question that it can be done. I just got a new MacBook a couple of weeks ago and I am backing it up to our TC alongside my son who has been using it since last Sept. with his MacBook. There was no problem setting it up. I just clicked on TimeMachine in the Dock and it asked me where I wanted to back my files up to. The only choice was the existing Time Capsule. I clicked and away it went. I took the advice of others and connected my Mac directly to the TC for the initial backup instead of relying on the wireless. It only took a couple of hours.
What specific error do you get?

  • Can I back-up my I-devices to the Time Capsule?

I'm about to purchase an Airport Time Capsule.
First I want to know if it is possible to back-up idevices to the Time Capsule.
At this moment we're backing-up our i-devices to iCloud but no more storage available and don't feel like buying more storage.

iOS devices cannot backup to TC.
They either backup to the cloud or local itunes on a computer.. the computer then is backed up by TM to the TC.. so indirectly it is backed up.
You can copy files to the TC from idevices but you will need to install a file browser app. eg Filebrowser.
But that is not backup and there is no backup app I know of.

When I tried to do remote access settingd, this problem get; The DHCP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP adress of your Apple Wi-Fi base station. I tried diffents things which are on google but it is not work.
What wan ip address do you have.. if the TC is behind an existing router then it will not work directly. The TC has to be bridged.. and you will need to forward port 548 TCP to the IP address of the TC.
And my HD's format type is exFat and I can use it on my mac, why is not work on TC, do you know? Finally I have one more question how can I see my files on ipad or iphone? By the way thanks a lot.
ExFat will not work on a TC.. Fat16 or Fat32 (both not recommended btw) or HFS+.. note if you use fat you cannot use AFP.
Google is your friend.. this took 10sec or less to find.

Finally I have one more question how can I see my files on ipad or iphone? By the way thanks a lot.
ipad or iphone, ie iOS devices do not use AFP, so the access is only via SMB.. and you need to purchase an App to get that ability.
    Again, 10sec on google.. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filebrowser-access-files-on/id364738545?mt=8
Lots of examples though. I have no idea of good and bad ones.. use google.

  • Once airport is setup, does it need to be connected via ethernet all the time?

Once airport is setup, does it need to be connected to the router with an ethernet cable all the time?

AirPort Setup....the configuration utility in Mountain Lion...will look at the connection and configure the Express accordingly.
If you have an Ethernet cable connected during the setup, then you will need to leave the Ethernet cable connected after the setup.
If you want the Express to connect using wireless only....then you must configure it using wireless only.

  • How do I extend my DSL network via ethernet between 2 Time Capsules?

I need specific, precise instructions. This is so frustrating!
My first time capsule is connected to my DSL modem, I have a long ethernet cable that goes from the first T.C to the second one. And then I have a hard drive plugged into the second T.C.  I also need to send an ethernet cable to my remote computer from the second T.C.
Where do I plug the ethernet cables in the second T.C.? There are two types of ethernet ports on the T.C.
    I'd REALLY appreciate any help!
    Thanx a million!
    Mark Brown

Plug the Ethernet cable into the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on TC #2.
Check to make sure that you have TC #2 configured in Bridge Mode:
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Upate to save settings
Power down the entire network...all devices....order is not important
Start the modem first and let it run for 45-60 seconds by itself
Start TC #1 the same way
Start TC #2 the same way
Start other devices the same way
It should be a simple matter to connect a drive to the USB port of TC #2 and a computer using an Ethernet cable. Use any of the 3 LAN <-> ports on TC #2 for this.

  • What happens if I add an Airport Extreme to the Time Capsule network?

It is difficult to get a signal at one end of our house. We are using TC as the network router. If I set up my older Airport Extreme to relay signals will it slow down transmission speed? I think the AE is operating at "g" frequency while TC is at "n" so having the slower router in the mix, does it make everything run slow?

If you need to extend your TC wirelessly, you will only be able to do so via a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) with the 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). WDS only supports 802.11g, which would impact the overall bandwidth performance of the TC. Typically, the overall bandwidth decreases by one-half for each base station added to the WDS. Since the WDS is operating in 802.11g, you could expect the bandwidth to be around 54/2=27 Mbps.

  • Can I plug my I pad directly into the Time Capsule to back it up?

I Need to back up my I pad which is now full.  It has over 2500 photos that I need to store else where and have a new time capsule.
I am not very tech savvy!!!!!

iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad back up to iTunes on a computer....or....to iCloud.
If you have a Mac that is setup to backup to the Time Capsule using Time Machine, then the iPad backups stored on the Mac are backed up to the Time Capsule when the Mac backs up. In this case, you could say that the iPad backups up indirectly to the Time Capsule.
Please see this Apple support document for more information on iOS back up options:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
